I grew up around African crafts and love the colours, creativity and culture.\nThe materials I favour to weave hats and bags are raffia straw, sugarcane, sisal fibres and vines. These materials are biodegradable, easy to dye, weave and are sourced in Africa.\n\nLeftover fruits and vegetables materials such as peels and skins, beetroot, avocado skins, spinach, brown onions, plums, used tea bags- are some of the organic ingredients used for creating natural dyes in a variety of colours. My team and I mix and experiment with different plants, fruits and vegetables scraps to see what type of colours we can create. The intensity and shade vary, depending on what and how fruits, vegetables and plants are combined. Raffia is also very useful in agriculture (it’s used to tie vegetables and plants) and very popular to use as ribbons around boxes and candles.\nThe artisans enjoy working with raffia and appreciate it’s sustainable qualities. Whenever something is made at our workshop, a part of the artist is reflected in the product. We take pride in each finished product because it reflects our hard work, creativity and vision.       "body": "Low and middle-income countries have limited resources to deal with the social and economic disruption created by COVID-19. Vulnerable populations across Africa resulted with the reduced ability to access healthcare and a daily sustaining diet. These effects have widened health and wealth inequalities adding anxiety, isolation and fear across the continent.\n\nColleges, schools and universities closing during COVID-19 meant the majority of Africa’s youth received no education. Officials in Africa say 60% of Africa's 1.3 billion people will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to achieve continent-wide herd immunity.\n\nNew COVID variants are spreading across the continent, and this makes the acceleration of vaccine distribution urgent to slow down the spread of COVID-19. The biggest challenge now is securing enough vaccines. African countries on the whole face a long wait to receive Covid-19 vaccines. Orders received so far are not enough to meet demand. Another challenge the continent face in the vaccine rollout is the logistical constraints, including the need for deep refrigeration of some of the vaccines. Some African countries have started vaccination using COVAX-funded vaccines and South Africa is preparing to purchase the Johnson & Johnson’s Belgium-based vaccine. Burundi, Madagascar and Tanzania have so far said they have no plans to acquire vaccines.\n\nA change of mindset from the African leadership to rid the continent of COVID-19, as well as help and support is needed from the United Nations, to assist vulnerable isolated communities. Africa also faces an uphill battle to return to normal.\n\nAfrica’s population of 1.3 billion people, also struggle with getting proper democratic governance.\n\nAfrica’s significant challenges:\n\n*Health services\n*Gender inequality\n*Infrastructure (roads, renewable energy, sanitation)\n*Environmental sustainability and climate change initiatives\n*Law and justice system\n*Financial market governance and regulation\n*Good public sector governance (regulatory governance, transparent and accountable financial management of government services)\n*Information and Communication Technology\n*Job creation\n\nInfrastructure is critically important in supporting economic growth and development as it can aid in education, security and climate change initiatives. The continent’s infrastructure gap is enormous and poses a threat to it’s development. It’s vital that new infrastructure fully integrates future climate changes into it’s planning and development.\n\nCovid-19 and climate change are major challenges for Africa and the rest of the world. The world hopes that COVID-19 will be under control in the next few months. Climate change is a different matter, a long term issue that will impact future generations. African leadership must make efforts to be over inclusive, pay special attention to children who were excluded from education due to other causes prior to the pandemic. This highlights how urgent it is for governments to urgently act and invest to improve technology for their educational and governmental institutions. This must be done by carrying out due diligence to ensure that privacy rights and infrastructure are protected from misuse, as well as secure public service delivery.\n\nAfrica’s future will be determined by African leaders.       "title": "Strength grows when you think you can’t go on, but you keep going anyway.",
      "body": "Our resilience is often tested when life circumstances change unexpectedly and for the worse. We all have issues, demands upon us, illnesses, losses, pain and vulnerabilities. The rise of Coronavirus left us all with many emotions that go beyond sadness, including anger, guilt and frustrations. We are exhausted, fear and isolation are triggering mental health conditions. \n\nOur world and personal circumstances defines us. Growing the ability to create you’re inner strength requires the ability to examine your ego’s desires, emotions and you’re own blind spots. Conscious choices about what environments we choose to blend with, influence who we are. Practising self acceptance and being kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned it’s a very important part of building inner strengths. We have to acknowledge and embrace our imperfections, cultivate a sense of purpose, try different learning tactics and view challenges as opportunities.\n\nChange is hard, NOT impossible. Strength is a concept open for interpretation.\n\nOne of the major reasons we struggle with change is because of uncertainty. When we greet uncertainty and the unknown with self care and support, we have a much better chance of maintaining our mental health during major life changes. Inner strength means the possession of self discipline, resilience, perseverance and the ability to control unnecessary and harmful impulses and habits. When you are clear on what matters most to you, your inner strength and power can draw from those values to get through rough times quicker. You must recognise the core values that resonate with you and not hold onto the values that you think you should resonate with.\n\nIdeas to practise to help build you’re strengths:\n\n1.Self care. Get a good night sleep, maintain a healthy diet (plenty of water throughout the day, reduce your sugar intake) and exercise. Physical fitness and a balanced diet can help boost you’re mood and you’re body in countless ways.\n2.Be open minded. Allow yourself to learn new skills and show yourself what you are capable of by regularly stepping outside your comfort zone.\n3.Learn to say NO. It’s OK to say no without apologising, justifying or explaining your choice.\n4.Set new goals. Stop postponing that one task that scares you the most and create a plan of action to accomplish your goals.\n5.It’s OK to ask for help. Part of being strong and independent also means knowing when to reach out for support. It’s important to set aside time to completely unplug from everything, connect with nature and just sit with your thoughts.\nCity life can be challenging, adds pressure to many aspects of a person’s mental state, but living in a more ‘green area’ can boost your mental health. A garden, a little bit of green space or even houseplants can convey positive spaces, minimise the stresses of everyday life and the long term costs in mental health.\nBeing outdoors and enjoying nature is just as important. Nature offers gentle, more relaxing stimuli. Several scientific studies have proven that looking at images of nature or going for a nature walk, can improve and build you’re memory. Spending excessive time indoors and not taking regular excursions into nature can have a negative effect on your health and wellbeing.\nWhen you’re immersed in nature, you boost the power needed to build resilience and inner peace. This experience often causes your perspective to shift, as you realise how small your individual life can seem in light of millions of years of evolution, the infinite variety of landscapes and countless numbers of species. Due to their durability and resistance to splintering, sugarcane and rattan are quality materials used in biodegradable fashion.\nThe textile industry is under pressure to create decor and fashion in a way which is most considerate of humanity and the environment. What and how materials are used in the production matters more now than ever before.
