titleThe Quest for NT Christology
bodyThe New Testament (NT) books had shown that Jesus was divine. But his divinity was unlike those in Greco-roman myths. The gospels and epistles had shown that his divinity was purely Hebraic. The God of the Jews is in a sense his own father because he's begotten through the Holy Spirit, making him have special connection with God. However, the New Testament writers had seen what Jesus did not notice: Jesus was acting as God by being the Son of God which led them to believe that God begetting Jesus from Mary through the Holy Spirit was actually an Incarnation (deity becoming human). We read from the gospel of John: John 1:1 The Word was God John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And again, from a Pauline epistle: Colossians 2:9 In him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily. My theory was that whilst Jesus lived truly as human, he was still very God. However, he did not possess this awareness. His disciples did notice these and they accurately regarded him as deity. It was the mission of the next generation of presbyters to decide with the church on how they would understanding this such a great truth revealed. The development of the Trinity doctrine is probably tied to this.

titleWhy did Jesus claim to be God in John 10?
body>The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for >blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” >John 10:33 (ESV) The Jews thought correctly that Jesus was claiming to be God or at least, a god. To give a little background on what this claim was, let us go back to the prologue of John. It was clear that the Word (logos) was God in John 1:1. Another rendering that would fit into the Second Temple Judaism setting would be 'a god' since the Jews in this period were aware that the _logos_ of God was a 'second god' (_deuteros theos_ -Philo, Questions and Answers on Genesis 2:62). Going back to John 10 we see Jesus claiming to be one with the Father in (verse 30). The previous verses revealed that Jesus was claiming to be of one hand with the Father (verse 28 to 29). The Jews got so angry at Jesus because they knew that Jesus was claiming to be someone _higher_ than the angels. Jesus responded by quoting Ps. 82. This OT LXX scripture showed us that angels were called 'gods' and 'sons of God.' What Jesus was trying to convey was that these angels were called by these divine titles (god and son of God) without blaspheming. So he told them that he too can have these divine titles and in fact, he deserved these titles because no one among the ''council of the gods'' is said to be ''the only Son'' (mono genes huios) and ''one with the Father'' in having a powerful hand (John 10:28-29). Jesus was truly human but he was way more than human. In fact, He was greater than the angels. Jesus was more than human and He was not an angel. He was the Logos of God who was a god very similar but not identical to the one God. He was God or a god per John. The second deity per Philo. John 10 probably was of the passages in scripture that led to the development of the Trinity doctrine. As to how a Jew like Philo could conceive such a thought while being monotheistic is worthwhile for another article.
