That ability to post updates, share videos could help ensure that the first casualty of this war isn't the truth.\n\nMedia And War Coverage\n\nThe Spanish-American War has long been referred to as the first \"media war\" as its military action was precipitated by media involvement. Many newspapers even ran articles that were sensationalist in nature, while correspondents were sent to Cuba to witness the war firsthand.\n\nSome 60 years later, the conflict in Vietnam earned the reputation of being the \"first television war,\" as it became the subject of large-scale news coverage after a substantial number of U.S. combat troops had been committed to the war in the spring of 1965. By 1968, at the height of the war, there were as many as 600 accredited journalists covering the war for U.S. wire services, radio and television networks. The Joint U.S. Public Affairs Office released daily briefings, which soon became known as \"the five o'clock follies\" while the war was regularly brought into American homes via the evening news.\n\nIn February 1968, Walter Cronkite – the anchor of CBS Evening News at the time and known as \"The most trusted man in America\" – made the bold statement that the conflict was \"mired in stalemate.\" That reporting even led then-President Lyndon B. Johnson to state, \"If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America.\"\n\nThe 1991 Invasion of Iraq – also known as the Gulf War – certainly made CNN a worldwide brand, and highlighted the power of cable news in such times.\n\nFirst Internet War?\n\nA debate also remains to what could be described as the \"first Internet war.\" According to Wired magazine, the distinction could go to the Yugoslavian Civil Wars of the 1990s as it coincided with the mass adoption of the Internet and the birth of online news outlets.\n\nHowever, it was really the 21st century's global war on terror (GWOT) following the events of 9/11 that truly showed the potential to cover war in real time. \n\nWar In the Social Media Era\n\nThe power that social media has is only now being fully explored, but as noted it could change coverage as Ukrainians can stream scenes from the battlefield in real-time, and anyone with a smartphone can fill the role of \"war correspondent\" like Winston Churchill, Edward R. Murrow, Ernie Pyle, Walter Cronkite and Christiane Amanpour.\n\n\"Social media represents a transformational element of armed conflict, unlike anything we have ever seen,\" suggested William V. Pelfrey, Jr., Ph.D., professor in the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.\n\n![Volodymyr-putin.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXujhFykM9T9bpwcpKo2n6zkoNoujwQ51gASNQTymmU2N/Volodymyr-putin.webp)\n\n\"Historically, media depictions of war were either provided by the military – and therefore not likely to be representative – or derived from sketchy, smuggled materials,\" Pelfrey explained in an email. \"The real time nature of high quality video provided from any cell phone, anywhere, anytime, broadcast on an always-on social media network with rapid re-tweets or sharing, means that people anywhere can virtually experience some of the elements of combat.\"\n\nArab Spring To World War III?\n\nIn many ways the events of Arab Spring could have been seen as a dress rehearsal for how social media could be used to cover such fast moving events.\n\n\"As first witnessed with the Arab Spring, the power of social media to effect social change, bolster support and condemnation for a cause, and even possibly bring down governments is proving quite formidable,\" said Kent Bausman, Ph.D., professor of sociology in the Online Sociology Program at Maryville University.\n\nHowever, the scale and scope of social media has dramatically evolved since the Arab Spring of 2011, when social media provided real time reporting from the ground.\n\n\"Facebook has three times the average monthly user than ten years ago, Instagram and Twitter are exponentially larger,\" added Pelfrey. \"That means the provider base (those who can provide content) is much larger and the audience is much larger. Society is acclimated to news content from non-news sources. Whereas journalists used to provide all coverage, now correspondents provide substantial coverage, particularly in hard to reach locations or places of violence. The devastation, victim experience, and images of live combat will likely change our conceptualization of war. They say that history is written by the victors. The perpetrators of violence, in this case Russia, will not be able to rewrite history when it is live streamed.\"\n\nWhat is also different now is how social media isn't being silenced by the Ukrainian government – as was the case during Arab Spring. In fact, efforts are made to keep the platforms open.\n\n\"It is understandable why nation-states would want to control social media during conflicts,\" said Bausman. \"In the past, nation-states have had the upper hand in controlling the narrative of conflicts. Social media changed all that. Â Furthermore, in the case of warfare, social media use might even be construed as a form of guerrilla tactics. For example, it was reported early on that Russia had hacked Ukraine's Ministry of Information. This could have really paralyzed the Ukrainian resistance efforts, but instead, this is where social media filled that necessary communication void. President Zelenskyy was able to take to social media, in particular Facebook, and communicate reassurance to the Ukrainian people.\"\n\nSocial media is also generating much support and sympathy across the world.\n\n\"It is arguable whether such support would exist in the real time we are seeing now, if we were only relying on reports from mainstream media sources,\" suggested Bausman. \"This is particularly true in the U.S., as many news entities have completely abandoned the keeping of news divisions overseas. Much of the U.S. reporting of this conflict appears to be sourced through many social media accounts. Obviously, social media is proving to be an essential mechanism in getting on-ground real-time reporting of a dangerous event.\"\n\nThere is still the danger too that misinformation could remain a problem.\n\n\"The accuracy of such reporting will continue to be troublesome,\" warned Bausman. \"There already are a number of social media postings claiming to document what is happening in Ukraine only that were to be proven untrue. The dangers of misinformation could release a powder keg of conflict in the region, but its use for relating real time information and galvanizing support may just prove to be Putin's Achilles heel.\"",

      "body": "Toronto-based Flashfood, a mobile marketplace that provides customers with access to discounted food nearing its best-by date, has raised $12.3 million in Series A funding led by S2G Ventures. The app allows users to browse through available deals at participating stores near them. Customers can also purchase items directly in the app and then pick up their order from the Flashfood zone in their participating store.\n\nThe app was founded based on Flashfood CEO Josh Domingues’s personal experience in 2016. His sister who was a chef called him one night distraught saying that she had to throw away $4,000 worth of food. Domingues thought it was a joke but was shocked to learn that the food was from a catered event and that throwing out uneaten food was the norm in the food and grocery industries. After months of researching, Domingues thought about creating an app that lets you buy food nearing its best before date at a discounted price, after which Flashfood was born.\n\nFounded in March 2016, Flashfood has numerous grocery partners across Canada and the United States, including Giant, Loblaw, Giant Eagle, Tops, Family Fare, Stop & Shop, Tops, Price Rite Marketplace and more. The latest came on Valentine's Day, when CNN declared Americans are \"less likely to have sex…than ever.\"\n\nTwenty-six percent of American adults didn't have sex at all in 2021, according to the latest General Social Survey (GSS), a national representative survey of American adults released most years since 1972. While COVID certainly didn't help matters of physical touch, the trend is in line with pre-pandemic levels. In 2016 and 2018, the last two times the survey was conducted, 23 percent of people reported not having sex at all.\n\nAre we really having less sex than ever? It's impossible to tell in a few data points. If you find yourself in the sexless category and want to climb out of it, though, there are ways to do so.\n\nConsider the data\nAs always when looking at survey numbers, be mindful that even a nationally representative sample won't illustrate what each and every person is going through. When looking at the actual breakdown of the 2021 GSS data, for example, the hard number of people telling GSS they haven't had sex in the last 12 months is 633 out of 4,032. In fact, 46 percent of participants (1,875) either didn't have an applicable answer, said they didn't know, or plain didn't answer that question.\n\nThat doesn't mean we should disregard these findings entirely, though. The GSS is far from the only survey to suggest people, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are having less sex.\n\nOne statistic doesn't tell the whole story, however, and also doesn't dive into the reasons behind it. \n\nWhy are we having less sex?\nSex educator and author of Beyond Satisfied: A Sex Hacker’s Guide to Endless Orgasms, Mind-Blowing Connection, and Lasting Confidence Kenneth Play suspects that as our online lives become richer, our ability to connect IRL diminishes. \"This trend has already been catapulting with every new device and dating app,\" he told Mashable. \"Coupled with pandemic lockdown, we now have a recipe for loneliness and disconnection.\"\n\nPrior to his current career, Play was a personal trainer. He discovered that he wasn't competing with other fitness businesses; he competed with the entertainment industry. According to dating site eharmony's latest Happiness Index, a nationally representative survey of 3,000 people, 41 percent of singles reported that their libido is higher now than pre-pandemic. \n\nPlay, a \"sex hacker\" who coaches clients on how to improve sex and intimacy, said he's getting more requests than ever for help in the bedroom.\n\nStephen Quaderer, creator of the inclusive app for people who love oral pleasure Headero, said the influx of 20,000 users on the app since July 202 is a counterpoint to these statistics. \n\n\"Within the Headero community we’re seeing a very different picture than the broader societal trend,\" said Quaderer. \"People are coming to Headero to seek out sexual exploration and experimentation – and based on the feedback that we’ve received, they’re finding it.\"\n\nQuaderer believes Headero's growth and the sexless trends actually have something in common. The reason the app is growing is because it's a safe space for people to be honest with their intentions and desires while grounding in safety and consent, he said. Meanwhile, in broader society, sex is increasingly framed from the prospective of stigma, so people don't interrogate or act on their desires.\n\nThis is certainly true of social media companies, which are our current communication hubs. Tech giants are increasingly prudish due to legislation like FOSTA-SESTA, which set out to curb sex trafficking but in reality is just pushing sex workers — and discussions of sex — to the margins. \n\nAs University of Toronto pornography platform Ph.D. student Maggie MacDonald told Mashable, sexuality is just one social element that we like to connect with others about. On our main methods of digital communication, however, we're not allowed to express this side of ourselves. This stifling of online sexual content — combined with a concerning lack of sexual education in schools — can bleed into our sex lives because if we're not talking about it on the internet then we may not be talking about it at all. Spontaneous desire is getting horny with or without stimulation…in other words, spontaneously. \n\nTransitioning from a stressful day to a sensual partner session can be challenging, Play acknowledged. He suggested creating a transition ritual to get in an erotic headspace. An easy sex hack? Take a sensual shower with your partner.\n\n\"The goal is to caress each other’s bodies slowly and focus on the awakening sensations in your body,\" Play said. \"As a bonus you also get clean and smell great for all the dirty fun ahead!\"\n\nQuaderer advises folks to educate themselves beyond \"the birds and the bees.\" Read about communication, and of course consent and safety. Learning more about sex won't just make you a more understanding and empathetic lover, but will also ground your own value system about sex, said Quaderer. \n\nQuestions to ask yourself are: What matters to you? What conditions must be met before sex?  What boundaries cannot be crossed? \n\n\n\"Sex is complex, and it can be confusing,\" Quaderer said, \"so having a firm set of personal sexual values can help you navigate that complexity as it arises.\" Knowing what you value out of sex can help you determine if a partner is right for you, and what desires you want to explore. \n\nOnce you have firm boundaries and desires, you can seek out communities of like minded people.
