titleThe Flaws of Our System: Scholarships
body

The Flaws of Our System: Scholarships

**The following article is composed of my personal belief. If you disagree with my beliefs, that’s your right. Just as it’s my right to think as I do. Also, I ask that you please remember, thoughts do change over time.** “Scholarships by definition are grants or payments made to support a student’s education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievements; but they're not, at least not anymore. If it’s not already evident I have a problem with misrepresentation. It bothers me when people lie whether it’s on purpose or not, ignorance is no excuse for society’s flaws. Personally, it's insulting when someone (who is not a scholar by any means in comparison to those who also applied) is awarded a scholarship. I graduated with a 3.996 (on a 4.0 scale), I scored average scores on my ACT test, and I finished valedictorian of my graduating class. Personally I do feel accomplished because it was a tighter race than I ever would have hoped for. Other than those basic accomplishments; I am: an accomplished Quizbowl player, a nationally accredited student researcher, and I have been involved (as president) with nearly every student organization my school offered. Beyond all that I have a passion for not only understanding the natural world, the political landscape, and the beings that inhabit them; but I have a passion for explaining my various understandings through writing. Honestly, that seems like enough accreditation to stand out and maybe win some scholarships, but no. The system is flawed. Anymore in order to win the scholarship you don’t have to have written the best response or answered the questions in the most scholarly way possible. You have to “need” the scholarship the most. Now for the record, I have nothing against the people who need these scholarships, everyone has a story and I’m sure many of them are endearing. My problem is with the people who choose said scholarships, if the award is not purely being given based on scholarly endeavors then don’t call it a scholarship! I love grants, I have received some even. But those are grants, you can give them to whomever and (ethically) discriminate however you please. On the national level the scholarship discrimination is different, it is harder to notice simply because of the sheer numbers applicants. Locally though, it’s a different story. As did several others obviously, I applied for several local scholarships this last year. I personally knew each of the scholarship winners pretty well and I was honestly baffled when I learned how much some of them won. I thoroughly thank my home community for all of their support, but they’re just as guilty. When they stepped up to the stage and listed off how they determined the winner of their memorial or the community scholarship they oversaw, it became evident that our GPA, our test scores, the ways in which we filled out their questionnaires, even our essay responses didn’t matter. These wonderful people chose the recipients based on the applicant's last name, their (the scholarship’s overseer’s) personal preferences, and even based on which kid they personally knew better. Often enough, the same people are involved in choosing the recipients of multiple scholarships and they take it upon themselves to share the wealth with as many kids as possible. Brace yourself this may seem cynical, but NO! The money should be awarded to the candidate who best exhibits scholarship, it shouldn’t matter if said person has already won another award. They also worked on that essay, if their essay is better than they should be rewarded for it. Giving the award to student 2 because student 1 worked too hard and has already received too many awards is ignorant! It is stupid that student 1 has to take out a loan to afford his education because he worked too hard on applying for scholarships. I am thankful for the opportunities I have been afforded, but that does not mean I did not work for them. I worked to be the valedictorian of my graduating class. Just like I worked to fill out those scholarship applications only to have wasted my time bc turns out they weren't honest scholarships they were biased grants awarded to a set person. If you don’t believe me or if you question my work ethic, ask my high school counselor about how inquisitive and/or nervous I was about everything.” ** Thank you for reading this article all of the way to the end and for now, the rant has ended. Feel free to be human, to be curious, and to do great things. -Dustin Bax**

titleHOW TO MAKE A PLAYLIST (LIKE A BOSS)
body#

How To Make A Playlist

#

(LIKE A BOSS)

The following guide is a step by step guide on how to make a playlist in a way that requires real thought and to make it more entertaining I’ve attached a point system to it to gamify the process. Read all steps and rules before beginning to ensure proper execution is implemented. I’ll attach a pic of my first playlist. It is not advanced by any means, but it should be able to help you get started. Take the world by storm! ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdPpddFhvac74t3MqKsqoHHFRY1Yr8te94NLW3kVvqN1i/image.png)
(I obviously use Spotify)
#
Steps (something we all have to take eventually)
1. Begin by making a playlist on your preferred music service 1. I usually name it Loop for easy identification 1. Add one song that has a single featured artist on it 1. Next, add a song that is by the person who was featured on the previous song but this song has to have a different artist featured on it 1. Keep adding songs based on the artist who was featured on the previous song 1. The goal is to make the playlist a perfect loop where you end it with a song where the initial artist from the first track is featured on the ending track * By creating such a playlist you are capable of listening to voices gradually changing into different artist as the songs change. * It’s quite melodic to think about you honestly #
Rules (they were meant to be broken)
* The same artist CANNOT be used twice for the purposes of clarity * Even if it is two different tracks, no repeats except for the following: * The artist may be used twice for two separate songs if the one allotted cheat has been used like in the Pentatonix example below. * The playlist needs to contains songs from at least three obviously separate genres of music. * It is ultimately up to you or Google what genre a song is, but come on people be honest! * You’re allowed ONE cheat, which consists of consecutively using two songs who have the EXACT same word in their title * It has to be the EXACT same word to maintain a certain level of difficulty * Example: Right Round (Flo Rida); Got Me Runnin’ Round feat. Flo Rida (Nickelback); Rockstar (Nickelback); Rockstar feat. 21 Savage (Post Malone); Real Nigga feat. Metro Boomin (21 Savage) * If you want to, you may use your one allotted cheat by naming two songs consecutively that are by separate artist but maybe remixes of one another * Example: Bad Things feat. Camila Cabello (Machine Gun Kelly); Havana feat. Young Thug (Camila Cabello); Havana (Pentatonix); Cracked (Pentatonix) #
The Point System (for those who approach life like it’s a game)
* For every song that successfully joins the playlist you get a point (Song = +1 point) * If you use your cheat it is a five point deduction from your total (Cheat = -5 points) * **Special Case**: If you use a song that is listed to have 2 artists but they both turn out to be the same person using identities you get ten points (Multiple Identity Artist = +10 points) * Example: Cocaine feat. Lil Dicky (Brain); Professional Rapper feat. Snoop Dogg (Lil Dicky) Brain = Lil Dicky; they’re honestly the same person #
Pro-User Tips & Tricks (I mean I am making this up as I go along)
* Look at your music library for inspiration * Soundtracks for major motion pictures are a great place for help * Have fun with it, this is my gift to you (whoever is reading this) * It’s a great way to pass time on a flight
