| title | University of Cambridge admits 'significant' problem with sexual misconduct |
| body | The University of Cambridge has admitted that it has a "significant problem" with sexual misconduct after receiving almost 200 complaints in a matter of months. The University is the first to reveal high numbers of reports after launching an anonymous system which has also been adopted by other institutions. The revelations come as universities across the country face pressure to tackle sexual harassment, with growing numbers introducing anonymous reporting methods. The majority of the 173 complaints - 119 - are allegations by students of misconduct by other students. Two students have made complaints about staff and seven staff members have complained about the action of colleagues. The other complaints, made between the launching of the anonymous reporting tool in May 2017 and January 31 this year, related to neither staff or students. This is because visitors to the campus are also able to complete online questionnaires. Some of the reports are thought to be historic. Graham Virgo, Professor of English Private Law and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Cambridge, wrote in a blog: "It supports our belief that we have a significant problem involving sexual misconduct – what we now need to ensure is that those who have been affected receive the support and guidance they need." Whilst anonymous reports have risen, Cambridge received only six formal allegations between October and December. Alongside the anonymous reporting tool, Cambridge launched a Breaking the Silence campaign in October last year and that is credited with prompting the second largest spike in reports in the University's history. Prof Virgo said: "We expected high numbers, and view it as a metric of success. It appears victims have confidence in our promise that these figures will be used to judge the nature and scale of sexual misconduct affecting students and staff, and to act on it accordingly." A number of other institutions , including the University of Manchester, have introduced the anonymous reporting tool but are yet to report results. |

| title | Winter Olympics: Yuri On Ice performed by Japanese skaters |
| body | Team Japan have delighted anime fans by performing a figure skating routine set to music from the popular Yuri On Ice animated series at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Footage of Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara's team pairs skating routine was widely shared on social media as users instantly recognised the accompanying music as the theme from the hit 2016 Japanese cartoon. It only took a few notes for fans to recognise the music and respond on social media. One user in Japan labelled the moment "real Olympic history," while another in Canada said it was a "fabulous if not magical performance". Yuri On Ice is a sports anime centred around international Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki, and his relationships with two Russian skaters, idol Victor Nikiforov and rival Yuri Plisetsky. |

| title | China builds the world's highest glass-bottomed bridge at 6,500 feet which takes tourists from one city to another |
| body | China's obsession with glass-bottomed bridges have reached new heights - literally. A new see-through footpath has been built at a staggering altitude of 6,500 feet in south-west China's Batai Mountain, according to Chinese media. The vertigo-inducing walkway is believed to be the world's highest glass-bottomed bridge, beating the previous record holder, the Zhangjiajie glass bridge, by around 1,800 feet. The impressive bridge, which cost 10 million yuan to build, connects Chengkou in the municipality of Chongqing with Wanyuan of Sichuan province. It's currently undergoing safety tests and is set to open to the public in mid-February. The 2.5-metre-wide transparent footpath is covered with three-layered laminated glass panels. A viewing platform has been built under the bridge. It's reported that a maximum of 80 tourists are allowed to stand on the bridge at the same time. It's built on Batai Mountain, where it's crowned to be the place where 'the first beam of light shine on Sichuan'. According to Xinhua, the 198-metre-long bridge is built over 186-metre above a sheer drop, which is roughly the height of a 66-storey building. The vertical distance between the bridge and the bottom of the valley is said to be the third longest in China. Batai Mountain also has China's highest cliff glass walkway. Opened in August, 2016, the walkway hangs on the side of a vertical rock face at an altitude of 2,288 metres. |

| title | 'I'm sorry' - but how do you tell if an apology is fake or genuine? |
| body | Sorry seems to be the hardest word. So sang Elton John on one of his biggest 1970s hits - but not every public figure seems to find it so tough to utter that powerful five-letter word. In recent months a broad spectrum of public figures, from politicians, to Hollywood actors and YouTube stars have all publicly expressed remorse. But with so much remorse on the airwaves, just how can we differentiate a forced apology from a heartfelt expression of remorse? In its purest form, saying sorry should be an "act of contrition, a realisation that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to make amends", says psychologist Geraldine Joaquim. https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/08/30/09/09/excuse-me-2696394_960_720.jpg Made early, a well-crafted apology can be hugely beneficial and can "diffuse the situation and takes the wind out of an accuser's sails", she says. A need to say sorry can arise in someone's public life and equally at home with their family and friends but, whatever the environment, how well it is received depends on how personalised it feels. Experts say the formula for an affective apology can be summed up with the acronym CAR: show concern demonstrate action offer reassurance "People want the response to be personal to them, to feel that they're being listened to and taken seriously," says Martin Stone, of PR agency Tank. He says that, in the professional sphere, the phrase "formal apology" is often used, but, in reality, the opposite is what is required. From businesses, governments and organisations, a scripted response will fail to resonate as it will not convey empathy and compassion. Whether online or in person, the timing and choice of language in an apology are decisive factors. "Firstly, it is important to show that you understand and sympathise," says Stone. "It is vital that any business or individual making an apology understands the focus - is it sorry for the way it's acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?" Spontaneity - watch out for the speed of response, the quicker the apology comes, the better indication that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt. Body language - if genuine, the person making the apology will be looking for listening clues to see if they are being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Vulnerability - performed apologies always have a sense of being "acted out", and are often accompanied by too many theatrical gestures. If the person is genuine they will provide "humbling signals"', such as a lowered head, to indicate remorse and vulnerability. Denial gestures - the biggest clues of insincerity can come after the gesture itself, with non-verbal signals that silently reject the words used; this can include looking to the floor and smirking. Linguistically it is also important to avoid dehumanising statements or promises that can't be kept. "Don't say that you'll ensure that this will not happen again if you're not confident it won't. It could come back to bite you," Stone explains. Equally, the use of "but" can hugely change the tone of an apology. As Stone points out: "I'm sorry but…' sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form of responsibility. "It may be three letters but it can instantly make an apology seem hollow." |

| title | Winter Olympics 2018: Will Pyeongchang be too cold for a Winter Games? |
| body | The 2018 Winter Olympics may set a record for being the coldest since the 1994 games. Concerned athletes are already shivering on social media, so what will seriously sub-zero temperatures mean for events, for the equipment, and for the competitors and fans getting ready for 17 days of action? Between -2C and -5C for the opening ceremony - starting at 20:00 local time on Friday- according to the Korean Meteorological Administration's news conference on Wednesday. The agency says this is "on par" with average February temperatures in previous years of around 0C with temperatures at night getting down to around -10C. To date, the 1994 edition in Lillehammer, Norway, was the coldest Games on record with a low of -11C. At nearly half a mile above sea level, Pyeongchang is regarded as one of the coldest regions of South Korea, and is Earth's coldest location for its latitude. It's the windchill factor. At the opening ceremony rehearsal on Saturday, biting winds dropped the temperature to -23C. The agency said spectators should "brace themselves" and Olympics officials have warned everyone attending to "wrap up and prepare properly". Because of the freezing temperatures, Pyeongchang is susceptible to variable levels of snowfall. Major snowstorms are a rarity in the area, and in February 2017 it snowed on just seven days with an average snowfall of 6.3cm. It's a concern shared by Games organisers who, as a result, have brought in snow cannons to produce it artificially at a cost of £4.4m. At the Yongpyong Alpine Centre - which will host slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing races - 250 snow guns served by three pumping stations have been installed. |

| title | 5 science-backed ways to get over a rough breakup |
| body | https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/03/22/02/04/broken-heart-2163735_960_720.png The only way to truly get over a breakup is to give it time. As biological anthropologist Helen Fisher previously told Business Insider, "The day will come when that person who's been camping in your head is out. And you wake up in the morning and you realise that yesterday you never thought about them at all." In fact, research suggests that we tend to overestimate how long it will take us to feel better after a breakup. That said, if you've just landed in Splitsville, there are plenty of ways to speed up the recovery process - so you can show up to work as a functioning human being, and not a sobbing mess. 1. Don't Facebook-stalk your ex A study published 2012 in the journal Cyberpsychology found that people who creep on their exes' Facebook profiles are more likely to have negative feelings for the person, more likely to desire that person, and less likely to grow from the breakup. It's hard to say whether looking at an ex's Facebook profile directly causes distress, or whether it's the other way around. Either way, do yourself a favour and try to resist the urge to "just check" what your ex has been up to since the breakup. 2. List five 'must-haves' and five 'can't-stands' in a potential partner That's a tip from Andrea Syrtash, dating expert and author of "He's Just Not Your Type (And That's a Good Thing): How to Find Love Where You Least Expect It." Syrtash previously told Business Insider she recommends going deeper with each value - so instead of "must have brown hair and brown eyes," try "I must be attracted to this person." One benefit of this exercise is that you might realise while you want someone who's emotionally open, for example, none of your exes have been. From there, you can start to look for a partner who's more suitable for you. 3. Try not to assume the breakup reflects something wrong with you A 2016 paper in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin suggests that your ability to deal with a breakup has a lot to do with your sense of self. One of the study authors, Lauren Howe, broke it down in The Atlantic:"In our research, people reported the most prolonged distress after a romantic rejection when it caused their self-image to change for the worse. People who agreed that the rejection made them question who they really were also reported more often that they were still upset when they thought about the person who had rejected them." On the other hand, Howe wrote, people who responded with remarks such as, "I learned that two people can both be quality individuals, but that doesn't mean they belong together" tended to have an easier time with the breakup. Howe recommends that we try to "question our own narratives" about what the breakup reveals about us in order to have an easier time coping. 4. Write about a silver lining you've found in the breakup Research suggests that simply journaling about your emotions surrounding a breakup can make you feel worse. But a study published 2015 in the journal Social and Personal Relationships found a specific type of journalling can help you cope: writing a redemptive narrative. That is, a story about how you turned suffering - in this case, a breakup - into a positive experience. Participants in the study felt less distressed after writing their redemptive narratives for four days - so it's unclear how long the effects last. 5. Talk about the breakup This strategy might seem counterintuitive: Why dwell on a painful past? And yet a study published 2015 in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that simply participating in research on breakups can help people get over them. A group of participants who spent more time talking to experimenters and filling out surveys about the breakup later experienced less distress than a group who spent minimal time on the same activities. The first group was also less likely to agree with statements like, "I do not feel like myself anymore." In an interview with The Atlantic, lead researcher Grace Larson said it might come down to looking at your past objectively. |

"body": "https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/03/22/02/04/broken-heart-2163735_960_720.png\nThe only way to truly get over a breakup is to give it time.\nAs biological anthropologist Helen Fisher previously told Business Insider, \"The day will come when that person who's been camping in your head is out. And you wake up in the morning and you realise that yesterday you never thought about them at all.\"\nIn fact, research suggests that we tend to overestimate how long it will take us to feel better after a breakup.\nThat said, if you've just landed in Splitsville, there are plenty of ways to speed up the recovery process - so you can show up to work as a functioning human being, and not a sobbing mess.\n1. Don't Facebook-stalk your ex\nA study published 2012 in the journal Cyberpsychology found that people who creep on their exes' Facebook profiles are more likely to have negative feelings for the person, more likely to desire that person, and less likely to grow from the breakup.\nIt's hard to say whether looking at an ex's Facebook profile directly causes distress, or whether it's the other way around. Either way, do yourself a favour and try to resist the urge to \"just check\" what your ex has been up to since the breakup.\n2. List five 'must-haves' and five 'can't-stands' in a potential partner\nThat's a tip from Andrea Syrtash, dating expert and author of \"He's Just Not Your Type (And That's a Good Thing): How to Find Love Where You Least Expect It.\"\nSyrtash previously told Business Insider she recommends going deeper with each value - so instead of \"must have brown hair and brown eyes,\" try \"I must be attracted to this person.\"\nOne benefit of this exercise is that you might realise while you want someone who's emotionally open, for example, none of your exes have been. From there, you can start to look for a partner who's more suitable for you.\n3. Try not to assume the breakup reflects something wrong with you\nA 2016 paper in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin suggests that your ability to deal with a breakup has a lot to do with your sense of self.\nOne of the study authors, Lauren Howe, broke it down in The Atlantic:\"In our research, people reported the most prolonged distress after a romantic rejection when it caused their self-image to change for the worse. People who agreed that the rejection made them question who they really were also reported more often that they were still upset when they thought about the person who had rejected them.\"\nOn the other hand, Howe wrote, people who responded with remarks such as, \"I learned that two people can both be quality individuals, but that doesn't mean they belong together\" tended to have an easier time with the breakup.\nHowe recommends that we try to \"question our own narratives\" about what the breakup reveals about us in order to have an easier time coping.\n4. Write about a silver lining you've found in the breakup\nResearch suggests that simply journaling about your emotions surrounding a breakup can make you feel worse.\nBut a study published 2015 in the journal Social and Personal Relationships found a specific type of journalling can help you cope: writing a redemptive narrative. That is, a story about how you turned suffering - in this case, a breakup - into a positive experience.\nParticipants in the study felt less distressed after writing their redemptive narratives for four days - so it's unclear how long the effects last.\n5. Talk about the breakup\nThis strategy might seem counterintuitive: Why dwell on a painful past?\nAnd yet a study published 2015 in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that simply participating in research on breakups can help people get over them.\nA group of participants who spent more time talking to experimenters and filling out surveys about the breakup later experienced less distress than a group who spent minimal time on the same activities. The first group was also less likely to agree with statements like, \"I do not feel like myself anymore.\"\nIn an interview with The Atlantic, lead researcher Grace Larson said it might come down to looking at your past objectively.",

The resulting sticky rice mass is then formed into the final mochi shape and baked or boiled. The buns are chewy and sticky. Given they are far bigger than bite-sized, they need to be laboriously chewed before swallowing.Anyone who can't chew properly - like children, or the elderly - will be likely to find them hard to eat.If not chewed but simply swallowed, the sticky mochi gets stuck in the throat - and can lead to suffocation.According to Japanese media, 90% of those rushed to hospital from choking on their new year's dish are people aged 65 or older. |

| title | India says it has made the world's thinnest material: one in 100, 000 pieces of paper. |
| body | Researchers at the Indian institute of technology, Mahatma Gandhi, announced that the world's thinnest material has been produced, with a thickness of one in 100,000.The new material used in magnesium diboride is about 1 nanometer thick.A human hair has a thickness of 80, 000 nanometers, and its DNA is 2.5 nanometers in diameter. The researchers say the method is simple enough to dissolve magnesium diboride in water and master the recrystallization time. This material can be applied to the next generation of batteries and coatings that absorb uv radiation.(https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2014/12/17/21/29/paper-571937_960_720.jpg) |
