Let's face it Dr. Frankenstein was a hack, and today's scientists are anything but. Researchers are now designing and fabricating electrodes for transcutaneious communication. That is for communication through the skin. And while we could see Frankenstein's implanted electrodes, implantable neural devices will be subminiature, possibly on the nanoscale.\n\nToday scientists and engineers are contemplating using cellular level silicon to connect with neurons to improve or restore sight or to decrease inflammation, for example. But in order to do this suitable hardware must be developed that is biocompatible and communicates using \"neural computation\", that is, speaking in the language of cells and neurons.\n<h2>DARPA Developing Implantable Neural Interface Systems</h2>\nDARPA is funding the creation of implantable neural interface technology that would  allow data-transfer bandwidth between the human brain and digital  repositories at a high level of resolution and accuracy. For an abstract of what DARPA is looking for take a look at <a href=\"https://www.sbir.gov/node/815777\">America's Seed Fund posting</a>.\n\nDARPA's \"Neural Engineering System Design Program (NESD) recently chose five groups to receive grants according to <a href=\"http://blog.sfgate.com/techchron/2017/07/10/uc-berkeley-amongst-darpa-grant-winners-tapped-to-build-a-implantable-neural-interface/\">SFGATE</a>.\n\nThe current state of the art in this area is the <a href=\"http://cdmbuntu.lib.utah.edu/utils/getfile/collection/etd3/id/3472/filename/3473.pdf\">Utah Electrode Array</a> (UEA) described as follows:\n<blockquote>The Utah electrode array (UEA) is a representative example of silicon-based neural interfaces. They are typically encapsulated with the USP Class VI biocompatible material, Parylene-C, on the inactive areas to insulate and encapsulate the electrodes and minimize damage to the neural tissue. In order to record or stimulate neural signals, the active electrode sites must be deinsulated. Tip deinsulation of Parylene-coated UEAs is typically performed by a reactive ion etching (RIE) process using an O2 plasma, and an aluminum foil mask. This technique has limitations due to nonuniform tip exposure lengths contributing to large impedance variations (o &gt; 0.5 MQ), and difficulty in controlling the magnitude of tip exposure, especially for tip exposures less than 40 ^m, which are needed to increase its selectivity in recording or stimulating single or multiple neurons. In this context blockchain technology is in its infancy with huge upside potential.</p>\n<h2>Next Generation Supercomputers</h2>\n<p>When thinking of next generation supercomputers on the exascale level, millions and perhaps hundreds of millions of processing cores will be needed to achieve \"billion way\" parallelism. The question is, with all the computing power on the globe, can there be a way to cobble together resources to allow distributed supercomputing?</p>\n<p>Would it be possible to combine the benefits of blockchain technology and smart contracts to create a network with the computational power of an ExaFLOP supercomputer? Would this configuration overcome some of the disadvantages of a centralized supercomputing such as high energy consumption on the order of 100 megawatts and costing $100 million per year? &nbsp;Supercomputer experts believe ExaFLOP innovation will soon lead to supercomputing with energy consumption of &nbsp;just 25 megawatts and a $25 million price tag. A fog network \"is an architecture that uses collaborative end-user clients to carry out storage, communication, control, configuration, measurement and management\" according to Jonathan Bar-Magen Numhauser of the University of Alcaia. It is precisely this architecture that is being adopted by Golem and SONM, among others, two new startups trying to make distributed supercomputing a reality.</p>\n<h3>Golem</h3>\n<p>Golem Network Tokens (<a href=\"http://coinmarketcap.com/assets/golem-network-tokens/\">GNT</a>) are now priced at just $0.22. GNT &amp; SONM were created to change the way computing is organized and carried out. A number of distributed computing networks have already been created but Golem is the first built on the blockchain.</p>\n<p>Golem's idea is to use existing idle infrastructure around the world to do the work currently being done by supercomputers, mainframes and farms. Golem, which some are calling the Airbnb of for computing, is building a distributed supercomputer on Ethereum. Golem will use idle computing power of larger computers as well as the combined computing power of millions of personal computers. To use Golem users will pay for services using Golem coins. Golem's current market cap is more than $200 million and has sold more than 1 billion Golem Network Tokens (GNT).</p>\n<p>According to Golem founder Julian Zawistowski \"if you have a powerful gaming computer that you aren’t using all day, or a PC that you leave at the office each night you can rent your unused computing power to help someone who may need it for rendering graphics or developing complex applications.\"&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Golem will soon release a software that will allow anyone, anywhere to lend their processing power Golem's global network. Experts believe if Golem is successful it won't happen until at least the mid-2020's as a mature version of Golem won't be available until then.</p>\n<h3>SONM</h3>\n<p>Supercomputer Organized by Network Computing (SONM) is similar to Golem and <a href=\"http://coinmarketcap.com/assets/sonm/\">is </a>priced at $0.035 on Coin Market Cap.
