titleMeg meets Mr Cat
bodyMeg and Mr Cat Mum said to Meg “Get your shoes on Meg we're going to the shops” Meg was happy because that meant seeing lots of fun things - and maybe even an ice-cream might be allowed ! In the little red car Mum told Meg she was a good girl for getting into her safety seat and clicking the belt on. Meg was 4 and a half years old now and getting bigger and older and she knew what she had to do. No Click No Ride ! That’s what Mum would say. And she meant it ! Meg shook her red pigtails and made a loud noise “Yippee”. Mum smiled at Meg “You like going to town don't you Meg” she said. “Oh yes Mum” said Meg. There were lots of people in town. Mum and Meg lived in a little house quite some way out of town, and didn't see lots of people most of the time. Sometimes Mr Graham the neighbour would visit he was a nice man. Meg’s Mum would make him a cup of tea and talk to him about grown up things while Meg would run around the front yard chasing a ball or simply sit in the sun and pretend she was a movie star ! Of course only the most important movie stars had red pigtails like Meg’s. Meg’s Mum started the car. Vrrrooommm. She clicked the lever and the car lurched a little as it fought against Mums foot on the brake. Meg’s Mum said “We'll just pop by Mr Graham’s house and see if he needs anything in town”. So off they went. Meg didn't ask her Mum why they were off to town, she knew Mum had some important reason. They didn't go to town much. Mum stayed at home most of the time with Meg. Mum did a lot of gardening, and three times a week she would go to the school and work with a big machine which cleaned the floors while Meg played on the jungle gyms. Mum said that this helped to buy nice things for them both. Meg liked that idea. The little red car went forward and past the chook house. Further down the drive they passed a cattle trough just over the fence on Meg’s side and there was a big horse there drinking. The horse was called Nancy. She was friendly and sometimes when Meg and Mum would go for a walk down to the letter box at the end of the drive Nancy would come to the fence and put her large head over with its long nose. Meg was allowed to scratch and pat Nancy’s nose, (she couldn't reach any other parts of Nancy as Nancy was much bigger than Meg). Meg had her red shoes on today, they matched the colour of the car. Meg said “Mum I can't get lost with my red shoes cause they'll find the car all by themselves” ! Meg’s Mum laughed. She had a nice laugh. “Meg you just stick with me and then if you get lost I” ll get lost with you and we'll have an adventure”! Meg’s Mum had a nice smile and freckles showed up when she smiled. Maybe that's why Meg had red pigtails ? The little red car turned out of the driveway and they went down the road for a minute to Mr Graham’s driveway. Mum said “Meg you wait a second and I'll just pop in to see if Mr Graham wants anything in town – won't be long”. Meg’s Mum turned the motor off and got out of the car. She walked quickly up to Mr Graham’s front door jingling the car keys in her hand. She was just about to knock on the door when it opened and Mr Graham said “Hello Jilly, what brings you out today” He peered round the side of Meg’s Mum and saw Meg in the car. “Hello Meg” he called. “Hi Mr Graham” Meg called back and waved to him. Her pigtails went up and down as she shook her head. Mr Graham was a fireman sometimes and had once asked Meg if they could use her if the fire engine red lights broke down. He said she could just sit on top of the engine waving her red pigtails and that would be almost as good as the fire engine red light ! Meg had said “Oh yes” ! She thought that might be fun. Meg’s Mum and Mr Graham talked a little bit at the door of his house then Mum returned to the car saying “See you Neville”. Mr Graham waved at Meg again. “Don't you let Mum bring you home without an ice-cream Meg” he said, “Walking around town can be hot work” ! Meg’s Mum got back in the car and shut the door, she waved out of the window and Mr Graham and said “I'll drop those things off in a couple of hours – bye”. She started the little red car and as they drove back down Mr Graham’s driveway she tooted twice – toot toot. “OK” said Meg’s Mum “We're on our way”. “Mr Graham needed some things from the grocery shop, and we are going there also” “Mum you like Mr Graham don't you” said Meg. Meg had once seen her Mum kiss Mr Graham on the cheek when he had come over to the house and spent the morning fixing their red car. Meg didn't know what he had needed to do but he spent a lot of time working on the engine. And Meg’s Mum had made him some tea and scones for morning tea time. When he had said “She's all go now Jilly” and turned the key and the car went vroom-vroom Meg’s Mum had hugged him and said “Thank you Neville, I just don't know what I would do without your help” then she had kissed him on the cheek and Mr Graham’s face had turned red, about the same colour as Meg’s pigtails. Meg’s Mums face had turned red too and Mum and Mr Graham smiled at each other in a silly sort of way. Meg thought it was funny. Mum had told Mr Graham to come over for tea that night and they had roast chicken and Mr Graham and Meg’s Mum had sat up talking and having coffee after Meg had gone to bed. Meg’s Mum had a happy sound to her voice that night. “Yes Meg I do like Mr Graham. You do too don't you” ? Said Meg’s Mum. “Mum he said you have to buy me an ice-cream – yes I really really like Mr Graham” said Meg. “Oh ha ha you'd like anyone who said you needed to have ice-cream Meg” said Meg’s Mum. Meg rolled her eyes at Mum and pretended she was a very important movie star. “Of course” she said. Meg’s Mum drove the little car along the road towards town. Sometimes she hummed a bit of a song. Meg looked out the window. She could see pretty well as the car seat she sat in was high and that helped her. Meg’s Mum said that she was growing all the time and one day she'd be big enough to go to school. Meg thought that would be pretty neat. She sometimes saw the school bus going past the gate in the morning to take kids to school and thought that looked like quite a good adventure. Having lots of other kids to play with would be very nice too ! Though they lived away from town it wasn't a really long way and it didn't seem to take too long to get there. It was much too far to walk of course ! The first sign of town was some houses. Meg watched them go past and then they came to the shops. Meg’s Mum said “We'll just stop at this shop here for Mr Graham’s things” . She drove into a parking place and stopped the car. “OK Meg” she said “you just wait a minute and I'll be there”. Meg’s Mum meant for Meg to wait in her seat till she had turned off the car and got out and come round to Meg’s side of the car. They always did this in town and Mum said it was safer that way. Soon Meg’s Mum was at Meg’s door and opening it. She helped Meg to climb out of the car. “Lets go” she said, and catching hold of Meg’s hand they walked into the shop. Meg thought her Mum looked pretty today with her summer dress on and her big smile. In the grocery shop they got some things for Mr Graham. Mum told Meg to look out for the cornflakes and she also wanted some bread and tea bags. After a while the green basket Mum had picked up at the door was getting full and they went to where the ladies had the machines which went beep when the groceries were passed over them. Meg’s Mum paid the lady at the counter, who smiled at Meg and said hello. Meg said “ Hello” politely also. Then they went out of the shop and back to the red car. Meg’s Mum put their things and the things for Mr Graham into the boot of the car. Then she said “OK I need to go to the doctors for some things and we might as well walk it's such a nice day” So they walked. It was warm in the sun. Meg’s Mum said “Come this way Meg” and held Meg’s hand. Meg’s Mums hand was warm and nice to hold. Meg knew her Mum was the best Mum in the whole world. It wasn't far to the doctors place and as they went up the steps to the door it opened all by itself. Meg thought this was pretty neat and a good idea also as a lot of people who went to the doctors seemed to be very old and they might not be too steady on their feet. Meg remembered seeing a lady Mum had called Mrs Robinson getting up the doctors steps one day and it had taken her a long time. She seemed to move so slowly that she hardly moved at all ! Meg’s Mum had offered to help her but Mrs Robinson was a cranky old lady and said in a not very nice voice “I'm alight, I can manage, I'm not dead yet”. Meg thought she was a bit mean and her lip had dropped a bit and she had almost felt like crying cause she saw her Mums face drop. The old lady had sniffed and lifted her nose in the air and turned away. Meg’s Mum had grabbed Meg’s hand and winked at Meg and said “It's OK old people can be a bit funny – they aren't happy about being old you know!” Today there were no old people on the steps of the doctors. Meg’s Mum and Meg went in the doors side by side, there were two doors which opened by themselves and it was quite a wide doorway. Meg had seen a man in a chair with wheels once going in these doors and the wheelchair, (as Meg’s Mum had called it), fitted easily through the doors. When they got inside Meg’s Mum spoke to a lady behind the counter and said to Meg “You can go and play in there if you want Meg” as she pointed to the kids play area. Meg liked to play there as there were books, toys and often other kids to play with. That was the best fun !. Meg’s Mum said “I” ll just go in to see the doctor now Meg you stay here and have some fun OK”. Meg looked at her Mum and said “Yes Mum”. The lady behind the counter said “Has Meg been a good girl – good enough to have a lollipop ?” . Meg’s Mum said “Meg’s always a good girl!” Meg was pleased that Mum thought so and even more pleased when the lady came over with an orange lollipop. “Thank you” said Meg. Orange lollipops were her favourite. It wasn't long before Meg’s Mum came back out of the doctors room. She stopped at the counter and said something to the lady there. They both laughed and then Meg’s Mum said “OK lets go Meg”. Meg looked at the lady behind the counter and said “See you next time” . The lady said “Bye, have a nice day” and off they went out the wide door that opened by itself, down the steps and at the bottom they turned left. Meg’s Mum said “I have to go to the chemist to get something now, this way” and holding Meg’s hand they walked together up the street in the sun. Sometimes cars would pass by, once a big truck went past on the same side of the road as them and Meg got a little scared because it was so large, and dark coloured and loud and smelly. Meg’s Mum held her hand a little bit tighter. “It's OK Meg” she said. And because it was Mum, Meg knew that was true. All of a sudden Meg’s Mum said “Oh my a new shop”. Meg had been to town a few times before with her Mum and knew some of the shops. There was the Grocery shop, (which they'd been to already), the doctors, (which wasn’t really a shop where you bought things), and the chemist shop where they were going now. There was a place where Mum got petrol and other stuff for the car. There was a big old building which Mum had never gone into and she called it “the pub”. Meg knew it was a place you could go to eat and drink stuff. And sometimes people drank too much beer at the pub and they walked funny. Meg thought this was strange, and kind of funny. Mum said it wasn't really a place for kids to be. There were some other shops too which sold things. But Meg was interested when her Mum had seen a new shop. “What do they sell Mum?” she said peering round her Mums hip to see what was in the window. Oh ! Meg saw something move. In the window. What ? A dog ! “Mum look!” said Meg in an excited voice, well it was more like a shriek. Meg quite forgot for a moment that she was an important and famous film star and she rushed up to the window. A white dog was inside the window in a cage. It was a large enough cage for the dog to easily move around and it was chasing it's own tail. “Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha” Meg laughed. It was a very cute dog, and funny. “He's funny Mummy”. Meg looked at her Mum and Mum was smiling. Meg’s Mum said “This is a pet shop Meg, it's where they sell dogs and cats and rabbits and birds and fish” Meg was amazed she had no idea you could buy an animal in a shop. “Can we go inside Mum, please, please, please” Meg said holding Mums hand and jumping up and down. Meg’s Mum smiled a nice, funny smile and looked upwards and said “Oh my”, she seemed to be talking to herself. Then she looked at Meg and said “Yes, of course we can”. Meg’s Mum caught Meg’s hand and stepped towards the open door of the shop. Meg’s Mum had a big smile on her face. As they stepped into the shop Meg looked around and saw lots of interesting things. A lady said “Hello there its nice of you to come and see our friends”. Meg looked at her she had dark hair that looked like she had been outside on a windy day. And she had big teeth with a gap in between the top two. Meg could see that because she was smiling at them. Meg’s Mum said “We haven't been here before, the shop is quite new?” The lady said “Yes we've only been open a week” She said “My name is Hilary – what’s your name?” she said to Meg. “Oh” said Meg who was busy trying to see everything at once. “My names Meg”. “Well you have a good look around Meg” said Hilary. “I'm sure you might find a new friend here”. The shop had lots of glass tanks on the walls filled with water and they had many kinds of pretty little fish in them. All the fish seemed to be quite busy swimming around between the ferns and other things in the tanks. It was a noisy shop. There were noises from several puppies and there were also a number of cages which had birds in them. The birds had many colours and pretty feathers. They made a lot of noise. Meg wrinkled her nose these animals smelled ! It was a warm shop. Meg pulled her Mum towards the window where she'd seen the cute puppy. It said “Yap” and then “Yap” again. Meg was excited. “Mum I think he likes me!” “What’s his name?” Hilary came over and said “He doesn't have a name yet” Meg thought that was odd. “Why doesn't he have a name ?” “Well” said Hilary, “He only gets a name when he goes home with someone – just like a baby”. “Oh” said Meg. “OK”. She looked around and saw a cage with a lot of cats in it. They were cute and small. “Those are baby cats Meg” said Mum. “They are called kittens when they're babies”. Meg said “Yes Mum I know that” and she went closer to see them. The kittens were funny. Some were sleeping but others were busy doing silly stuff, chasing their own tails, or other kittens tails, and others were jumping around like they had springs in their legs. “Mum I love these kittens” said Meg. One cat stopped and came close to the side of the cage, it stopped and looked a Meg. “Mum this kitten has hair the same colour as mine” said Meg. “That’s right Meg” said Mum. “He's a ginger cat”. “How do you know it's a 'he' Mum?” said Meg. “Well Meg most ginger cats are boys” Mum told her. The ginger cat had put a paw up to the cage front and Meg put her finger through the bars to touch him. He pulled his paw back then very very quickly batted Meg’s hand. “Mum he's playing with me” Meg said excitedly. “He likes me”. “Yes Meg I think he does”. Mum squatted down beside Meg. “Isn't he cute” she said. “He has big eyes”. “I wonder what his name will be” said Meg. “Mum it's not fair that he doesn't have a name, I don't know what to call him” . Meg’s Mum sighed. “Yes, well” she said. “Mum” said Meg “It would be nice to take him home, he could be my friend” said Meg, “We could play lots and then he could have a name, he's funny”. Meg’s Mum looked at her and smiled, she looked at the cat and said “He's certainly cute”. Hilary was standing beside them. She said “Cats can be very good friends for people, and when they're young like this one they're full of fun and great to play with”. Meg’s Mum said “Yes they are alight”. Then she said well come on Meg we better go get those things from the chemist for me. Meg didn't really want to leave the shop, and the kitten who could be her new friend. She said “Mum can we take this kitten home – please”. Mum said “Meg we might, I guess it would be fun”. “Do you think you would be a good friend for him?” “Oh Mum you bet !” said Meg excitedly. Mum turned to Hilary and said “Well we have a couple of other things to do and we might just stop by on the way back” Hilary said “You're both very welcome, see you later”. “Come on Meg” said her Mum and they walked out of the shop. Meg had to turn around a few steps towards the door and she looked at the ginger kitten which was standing on his back legs with both front feet up on the cage. “Look Mum, he's waving goodbye to us” said Meg. And he was too! Meg waved to the kitten “Bye bye Mr cat, might come to see you soon!” she said. Meg skipped along beside her Mum. The sun was shining and it was warm. Meg’s Mum hummed, she seemed to hum when she was happy, like when Mr Graham was going to come for dinner. Meg’s pigtails bounced as she skipped. "Mum" she said "Do you think a kitten would be happy to come home to our house? " Mum said " oh yes Meg, but there's a lot of things to do if you have a kitten to look after." Meg stopped skipping, she stood still. "Hmmmm, yes I suppose so Mum" she said trying to sound very grown up. "But I think he could be a nice friend, we could play and he could have cakes and ice-cream with me ". "Well Meg" said Mum "Kittens don't eat cakes, but they might like ice-cream! " "and they do need good friends just like we do so they grow up happy." Meg started walking alongside Mum Again, she was so busy thinking she forgot to skip! They came to the chemist shop, Mum was holding Meg’s hand, she had to let go so that she could get a piece of paper from her purse. Then Meg’s Mum went up to the counter and passed the paper to the man who was standing there. Meg knew his name was Mr Smart, and she thought he must be pretty smart to be a chemist ! Mr Smart smiled at Meg and said to Meg's Mum “That'll be 10 minutes”. Meg’s Mum said “We'll just pop out and be back in a little while, come on Meg” and she took Meg’s hand again. They started to walk out of the chemists shop, Meg was looking at all the pretty things. She saw some hair clips on a stand which was very high above her head, (Meg was just a little girl !), and she said “Mum look at those, aren't they pretty, I really like the one with blue wings on it”. She was pointing at a clip that looked just like a blue butterfly. Meg's Mum said “Yes Meg it's so pretty – just like you. I think you would look very pretty with one of those on each of your pigtails”. Meg said “Oh Mum have I been a very good girl ?” “Would I be allowed to have such pretty clips?”. Meg’s Mum smiled. She didn't say anything except “Come on Meg”. They went out of the chemist shop and walked past the butchery shop. Meg’s Mum paused for a moment and said “Hmmmm” then they carried on to the next shop which had tables out side and large very clean windows. Meg could see lots of lovely cakes and other food in cabinets in the shop. Meg knew this was a coffee shop. Meg's Mum went towards the door. “I think I need a coffee Meg” she said. “I'll bet you need a cake, and maybe a fluffy?”. Meg jumped up and down and her red pigtails flew around her head. She loved cakes and especially loved the drinks called fluffies. “Oh Mum” she cried “Yes, yes yes, thank you, yum !”. In the coffee shop it was warm and smelt of lovely food. Meg looked in the cabinet and saw her favourite, very pretty cup cake. It was in a pink paper cup with wavy sides and it was a yellow cake with red and blue icing on the top. It had hundreds and thousands sprinkled on it and had sort of wing things on the top just like the butterfly wings on the hair clip in the chemist shop. “Mum could I have that one please” said Meg. Mum smiled and the lady behind the counter said “Such a pretty girl should always have a pretty cake”. Meg’s mum said “I” ll have a small cappuccino with chocolate on the top please and Meg will have a small fluffy please as well.” The lady said “Certainly madam” and she smiled. She had large bangle earrings and they shook as she chuckled to herself. Meg thought she was nice. She got the cake out of the cabinet and put it on a plate with a tiny fork and a dollop of cream beside it. She also placed a paper towel folded into a triangle on the plate. “There you go miss” she said pushing the plate towards Meg across the counter. “I will bring your drinks in a moment”. Meg’s mum paid the lady and while she was doing that Meg chose the best table in the Cafe to sit at. It was right in the sunshine. Meg’s Mum came over and sat down with her. “Well Meg its been an interesting day so far” she said. “Yes Mum it has” said Meg thinking of nothing else but the kitten she had met in the new pet shop. “Mum..” Meg started to say, Meg’s Mum said “Yes I know Meg I can read your mind”. “You want to go back and visit that kitten – and I think you want to take it home with us?”. “Am I right?”. Meg's eyes grew round, “Oh mum you are the best mum I ever had in the whole world !” she said. Meg looked at her Mum and saw a tear drip from her eye. Meg said “Mum what’s wrong ?”. Then she noticed that her Mum was smiling. “Meg” Mum said “You are the best daughter I ever had in the whole world, and I am very happy right now because I love you so much!”. Meg didn't know what to say so she ate some of her cake. Just then the lady came over with the coffee for Meg’s Mum and the fluffy for Meg. “There you go ladies” she said “Enjoy”. She looked at Meg’s mum “Are you ok dear?” she said “Oh yes, thank you” said Meg’s Mum gently with a funny smile. Meg said “Mums just crying a little bit cause she's happy!” The lady smiled a funny yet happy smile and said “Oh!” then she went back to the counter. Meg saw her wipe her eyes and sigh. Meg and her Mum finished at the coffee shop and Meg’s Mum said “Ok lets go back to the chemist”. They walked out of the shop hand in hand and waved bye bye to the nice lady behind the counter as they left. She waved back and had a big smile “You two come back any time soon” she said “I can always use two such happy customers!” Mum held Meg’s hand as they walked back towards the chemist shop. “Oh” said Meg’s Mum and she stopped. “What Mum?” said Meg. Then she noticed they were outside the butcher shop. Meg’s Mum paused for a moment, she seemed to be thinking. Then she said “We'll just pop in here”. She held the door open for Meg as they walked in. There was a large man behind the counter and he had a black and white striped apron on. He smiled at them and said “Hello Mrs Simpson, and hello Meg”. Meg said “Hello Mr Burt” and Meg’s Mum said “Hello George”. Mr Burt, (whose name was George), reached into a cabinet and lifted out a small red saveloy sausage. “I've been saving this one for you Meg” he said. His large arm came over the counter and Meg took the sausage. “Ohhh thank you Mr Burt” said Meg. She loved the small saveloy sausages. Mr Burt almost always gave her one. He was one of her favourite people. Meg’s Mum said “I'll have 200 grams of mince please George”. Mr Burt took a plastic bag from a rack and put his hand inside it. Then he used his hand, (inside the bag), to grab some mince from a pile under the glass of the cabinet. He folded the bag up around the mince then put it on some scales. “Is that all you need Mrs Simpson?” he said. Meg’s Mum sighed “Thank you yes and please call me Jilly, George” she said. Mr Burt smiled. “Of course Jilly”. Meg smiled too she knew that Mr Burt and her Mum always said that to each other, it was a little game they played. Meg’s Mum paid Mr Burt and they said goodbye. Mr Burt said “See you next time” and smiled. He came around the counter and held the door open for them. Meg and her Mum walked up the street and in a moment came to the chemist shop. Mr Smart the chemist was behind the counter again. He looked up as they came into the shop. “Ah Mrs Simpson, your prescription is ready”. Meg’s Mum stopped by the stand with the very pretty butterfly clips on it. She took two from the stand and said “Mr Smart we'll also have these please”. Mr Smart took them from her hand and was about to put them into a bag when Meg’s Mum said “Oh, no, I think we'll just take them as they are please”. Mr Smart said “Of course” and Meg’s Mum paid him for the items. Meg’s Mum then put both clips into Meg’s hair, one on each of her pigtails. The she took Meg to a mirror and stood her in front of it. “Oh Mum” said Meg “They're so pretty”. Meg felt so happy she thought she might burst. “No Meg, it's you who are pretty and the clips just add to your prettiness” said her Mum. Mr Smart clapped his hands and said “I agree” in a cheerful voice. Meg’s Mum smiled at him. Meg and her Mum left the chemist shop and both of them were smiling. The sun was still very warm and the breeze was gentle as they walked along the street. Meg was getting excited as she could see the pet shop was getting closer ! “Mum” she said “Ummm......”. “Yes Meg we'll go back in there now” said her Mum. They turned into the pet shop. The lady, Hillary, who had been there earlier was bending over a fish tank when they walked in and she was shaking something in to the tank from a small bottle. “What's that ? ” said Meg . “Oh hello again” said Hillary. “This is fish food” she said. “Ohhhh” said Meg who had never seen fish food before. “That's funny food”. “Yes” said Hilary, “It's not what you or I might eat but they like it”. Meg said “Ok” then she looked around and saw the ginger kitten again. “Mum look he's still here” she said. “Yes I was hoping he would be” said her Mum. “Hillary I think we might buy that little kitten and take him home so Meg can have a playmate”. “Good idea” said Hillary. Meg’s eyes got rounder and rounder. “Mum !” “I love you a million times millions!” she gasped. Mum smiled “You are a treasure Meg’s. You are my mostest treasure in the whole world” and she hugged Meg. Hillary smiled too. Meg’s mum said “Hillary would you kindly hold that kitten for us while we go and get the car. I guess we'll need a few other things to go along with him and I don't want to have to struggle along the street with them”. Hillary said “Absolutely, you just go get your vehicle and I'll see you shortly”. Meg and her Mum walked out of the shop, on the way out Meg turned to Hillary and waved and said “See you soon” and she waved to the ginger cat “See you soon too Mr Cat”. As they walked out of the shop and up the street Meg was so happy she couldn't even feel her feet. It was almost as if she was walking on air. Meg and her Mum walked up the street towards where the car was parked. “Look Mum” said Meg “There’s a car just like ours – it's even the same colour”. Meg’s Mum chuckled. “That is our car Meg”. Meg laughed “I know I was just trying to trick you”. Her mum smiled – she seemed to be smiling a lot today, she smiled a lot anyway but today was specially full of smiles. They got to their little red car and Meg’s Mum unlocked the doors. She opened Meg’s door and helped her up into the car then placed the mince and her prescription into the back seat area. Then Meg’s Mum came back to Meg’s side of the car and checked she was buckled into her seat correctly. She shut the door and walked around the front of the car to get into her side of the car. Meg thought her Mum looked very pretty. Meg’s Mum turned the key and the car went Vroooommm. She looked carefully in the mirrors and drove out backwards then they went forwards onto the road. They turned up the street towards the pet shop. Meg was very excited. “Mum lets go meet Mr Cat !” she said. “You bet Meg’s that's what we're going to do right now” said her mum. They found a parking space right outside the pet shop, which was lucky because it turned out that there was quite a few things they needed to get so that Mr Cat would be comfortable in his new home at their place. Mum and Meg went into the shop. Hilary said “Welcome back” and smiled at them. “Look” she said “Mr Cat is happy to see you too”. She was right, Mr Cat was standing on his back legs again with his paws on the cage side looking at Meg. “Oh Mum can I pat him please” said Meg. Mum smiled at Meg and said “Of course” so Meg put her hand through the bars of the cage and patted Mr Cat. He liked her. He licked her hand. His tail went straight up in the air. Meg said “Mum look at his tail” and Hilary said “When his tail is up like that he's saying he's happy”. Meg kept patting Mr Cat and her Mum and Hilary talked a bit about things they might need. Mum paid for Mr Cat and also a large flat bowl which she said would be for Mr Cat to use as a toilet. Meg thought that was interesting. Mum also bought some 'Cat Litter' to spread in the toilet bowl she said Meg would see how that worked later. Mum bought a set of small pretty bowls with cat pictures on them for Mr Cat to eat and drink out of and a strange tall thing with carpet on it. Mum said that was for Mr Cat to climb up on and sharpen his claws. Meg thought that was interesting too. Meg’s mum bought some pills for Mr Cat so that he would be healthy and also a thing that looked like a colourful stick with some feathers on the end for a play toy for Mr Cat. She also bought a wind up mouse ! Mum said Mr Cat would like to play with that. Hilary came out of the back room of the shop with a flat piece of cardboard and proceeded to fold it up until it turned into a box. Meg thought that was very clever. Hilary then got Mr Cat and lifted him out of the cage. She placed Mr Cat into the box then folded the top shut so he couldn’t climb out. “There” she said “You are all set”. “I” ll help you carry the things you to the car”. Meg got to carry the cat bowls, Mum carried Mr Cat and Hilary carried the other bits and pieces. Mum put all the things except Mr Cat into the back seat of the car. Then she said thank you to Hilary and opened the door for Meg to climb into her car seat. She placed Mr Cat in his box on the floor below Meg’s feet. Then she got into her side of the car and the car went Vrooommm. Meg and her Mum waved to Hilary and they drove off down the street towards their home. “Well” said Meg’s Mum “I wasn't expecting to come home from town with a new friend, but I”m very happy we found Mr Cat. Now we just need to drop those things off for Mr Graham and then we can take our new friend home. And once we are there we'll have to settle him in and then maybe we can think of a name for him” . Meg said “What shall we call him, Mum?” . Meg’s Mum said “I don't know right now, but cats often seem to have a name already – it just seems that at some time soon we'll figure it out.” Meg asked “Will he tell us?” and her Mum said “Well, not in words Meg as he cant really speak like us of course, but maybe the things he does will suggest a name. We'll see”. They drove to Mr Graham’s house and Meg’s Mum got out with the things she had bought for him in a shopping bag. She went up to the door of his house and knocked. There was no answer and so after a while Meg’s Mum placed the bag beside the door. Then she came back to the car and got a notepad and pen out. She wrote something on it and put the note on the bag. Then she came back to the car and said “Looks like Mr Graham isn't home right now, but that's ok I've left him a note and maybe we'll see him later”. And with that she started the car, Vrooommm, and off they went to their house. With Mr Cat in the car by Meg’s feet and all his things in the back seat. Meg was happy, she could see her Mum was happy and her Mum was humming so even if Meg had her eyes closed she could tell her Mum was happy. Mr Cat gave a little “Meow” and Meg said “Mum I think Mr Cat is happy just like us”. Meg’s Mum said “I think everyone is happy today Meg” And while they had already had a really nice day it seemed the adventure was only just beginning. Meg was 4 and a half years old now and getting bigger and older and she knew what she had to do. No Click No Ride ! That’s what Mum would say. And she meant it !\n\nMeg shook her red pigtails and made a loud noise “Yippee”. Of course only the most important movie stars had red pigtails like Meg’s.\n\nMeg’s Mum started the car. Vrrrooommm. She clicked the lever and the car lurched a little as it fought against Mums foot on the brake. Meg’s Mum said “We'll just pop by Mr Graham’s house and see if he needs anything in town”. So off they went.\n\nMeg didn't ask her Mum why they were off to town, she knew Mum had some important reason. They didn't go to town much. Mum stayed at home most of the time with Meg. Mum did a lot of gardening, and three times a week she would go to the school and work with a big machine which cleaned the floors while Meg played on the jungle gyms. Mum said that this helped to buy nice things for them both. Meg liked that idea.\n\nThe little red car went forward and past the chook house. \n\nMeg had her red shoes on today, they matched the colour of the car. Meg said “Mum I can't get lost with my red shoes cause they'll find the car all by themselves” ! Meg’s Mum laughed. She had a nice laugh. “Meg you just stick with me and then if you get lost I” ll get lost with you and we'll have an adventure”!\n\nMeg’s Mum had a nice smile and freckles showed up when she smiled. Maybe that's why Meg had red pigtails ? \n\nThe little red car turned out of the driveway and they went down the road for a minute to Mr Graham’s driveway. She thought that might be fun.\n\nMeg’s Mum and Mr Graham talked a little bit at the door of his house then Mum returned to the car saying “See you Neville”. Mr Graham waved at Meg again. “Don't you let Mum bring you home without an ice-cream Meg” he said, “Walking around town can be hot work” !\n\nMeg’s Mum got back in the car and shut the door, she waved out of the window and Mr Graham and said “I'll drop those things off in a couple of hours – bye”. She started the little red car and as they drove back down Mr Graham’s driveway she tooted twice – toot toot. \n\n“OK” said Meg’s Mum “We're on our way”. “Mr Graham needed some things from the grocery shop, and we are going there also” \n\n“Mum you like Mr Graham don't you” said Meg. Meg’s Mum had a happy sound to her voice that night.\n\n“Yes Meg I do like Mr Graham. You do too don't you” ? Said Meg’s Mum. “Mum he said you have to buy me an ice-cream – yes I really really like Mr Graham” said Meg. \n“Oh ha ha you'd like anyone who said you needed to have ice-cream Meg” said Meg’s Mum. Meg rolled her eyes at Mum and pretended she was a very important movie star. “Of course” she said. \n\nMeg’s Mum drove the little car along the road towards town. Having lots of other kids to play with would be very nice too !\n\nThough they lived away from town it wasn't a really long way and it didn't seem to take too long to get there. \n\nIn the grocery shop they got some things for Mr Graham. Then she said “OK I need to go to the doctors for some things and we might as well walk it's such a nice day” \n\nSo they walked. Meg’s Mum had grabbed Meg’s hand and winked at Meg and said “It's OK old people can be a bit funny – they aren't happy about being old you know!” \n\nToday there were no old people on the steps of the doctors. Orange lollipops were her favourite.\n\nIt wasn't long before Meg’s Mum came back out of the doctors room. \n\nAll of a sudden Meg’s Mum said “Oh my a new shop”. \nMeg had been to town a few times before with her Mum and knew some of the shops. \n\nThere were some other shops too which sold things. \n\nMeg’s Mum said “This is a pet shop Meg, it's where they sell dogs and cats and rabbits and birds and fish” Meg was amazed she had no idea you could buy an animal in a shop. “Can we go inside Mum, please, please, please” Meg said holding Mums hand and jumping up and down. Meg’s Mum smiled a nice, funny smile and looked upwards and said “Oh my”, she seemed to be talking to herself. Then she looked at Meg and said “Yes, of course we can”.\n\nMeg’s Mum caught Meg’s hand and stepped towards the open door of the shop. \n\nThe shop had lots of glass tanks on the walls filled with water and they had many kinds of pretty little fish in them. \n“Mum it's not fair that he doesn't have a name, I don't know what to call him” . “Do you think you would be a good friend for him?”\n“Oh Mum you bet !” said Meg excitedly. Meg waved to the kitten “Bye bye Mr cat, might come to see you soon!” she said.\n\nMeg skipped along beside her Mum. The sun was shining and it was warm. Meg’s Mum hummed, she seemed to hum when she was happy, like when Mr Graham was going to come for dinner. \n\nMeg’s pigtails bounced as she skipped. \"Mum\" she said \"Do you think a kitten would be happy to come home to our house? \" Mum said \" oh yes Meg, but there's a lot of things to do if you have a kitten to look after.\" Meg stopped skipping, she stood still. \"Hmmmm, yes I suppose so Mum\" she said trying to sound very grown up. \"But I think he could be a nice friend, we could play and he could have cakes and ice-cream with me \". \"Well Meg\" said Mum \"Kittens don't eat cakes, but they might like ice-cream! \" \"and they do need good friends just like we do so they grow up happy.\"\n\nMeg started walking alongside Mum Again, she was so busy thinking she forgot to skip! \n\nThey came to the chemist shop, Mum was holding Meg’s hand, she had to let go so that she could get a piece of paper from her purse. \n\nIn the coffee shop it was warm and smelt of lovely food. \n\nMeg and her Mum finished at the coffee shop and Meg’s Mum said “Ok lets go back to the chemist”. They walked out of the shop hand in hand and waved bye bye to the nice lady behind the counter as they left. She waved back and had a big smile “You two come back any time soon” she said “I can always use two such happy customers!”\n\nMum held Meg’s hand as they walked back towards the chemist shop. \n\nMeg and her Mum walked up the street and in a moment came to the chemist shop. \n\nThe sun was still very warm and the breeze was gentle as they walked along the street. \n\nMeg and her Mum walked out of the shop, on the way out Meg turned to Hillary and waved and said “See you soon” and she waved to the ginger cat “See you soon too Mr Cat”.\n\nAs they walked out of the shop and up the street Meg was so happy she couldn't even feel her feet. It was almost as if she was walking on air. \n\nMeg and her Mum walked up the street towards where the car was parked. \n\nThey got to their little red car and Meg’s Mum unlocked the doors. \n\nMeg’s Mum turned the key and the car went Vroooommm. \n\nMeg kept patting Mr Cat and her Mum and Hilary talked a bit about things they might need. \n\n“Well” said Meg’s Mum “I wasn't expecting to come home from town with a new friend, but I”m very happy we found Mr Cat. We'll see”.\n\nThey drove to Mr Graham’s house and Meg’s Mum got out with the things she had bought for him in a shopping bag. \n\nMeg was happy, she could see her Mum was happy and her Mum was humming so even if Meg had her eyes closed she could tell her Mum was happy. Mr Cat gave a little “Meow” and Meg said “Mum I think Mr Cat is happy just like us”. Meg’s Mum said “I think everyone is happy today Meg”\n\nAnd while they had already had a really nice day it seemed the adventure was only just beginning. \n\nYou need to read the next story to find out all the fun that Mr Cat, Meg and her Mum were going to have living together and what happened next !\n\n***A little clue or two: \n\nMeg and Mum discover Mr Cats real name\nMeg and Mum discover Mr Cat is crazy (in a nice way)\nMeg and Mum and Mr Graham become Mr Cats best friends.\n\nAnd lots more !\n\n\nCopyright P Shilton 2014\nCambridge \nNew Zealand",
