titleHow to fix the Cleveland Browns
bodyRecently, I wrote about the flaws defining the Cleveland Browns, the NFL's worst team. If you missed it, [here's a link](https://steemit.com/sports/@doylerudolph/the-fault-s-in-our-browns-or-a-look-at-the-cleveland-browns) to the position-by-position breakdown. Today, I explain what needs to be done to fulfill new general manager John Dorsey's promise that ["my total objective going into the '18 season is to win the AFC North. Anything else to me is unacceptable."](http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2017/12/browns_john_dorsey_aiming_for.html) # Following the Season ![Hue-Jackson.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPgDse8fbJAXLPZVfko3otGowmxMHXP2RKuPU6UszGu5g/Hue-Jackson.jpg) *Will Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson return for the 2018 season, and will he bring in an offensive coordinator?* Whether the team finishes at 0-16, 1-15, or even 2-14, it is important to evaluate the talent at every facet of the team. Whether Dorsey and owner Jimmy Haslam believe that head coach Hue Jackson is the coach for the future or not, they must weigh his strengths and talents against those of any available candidates. I believe Jackson, with his strong leadership qualities and ability to get players to buy into his system even in a losing season, absolutely could be the man. If Dorsey and Haslam agree, the team should look to bring in an offensive coordinator. ![John-DeFilippovert.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRt7rGAroMvq3bdnijScTuYi1oa8qZN7tQVv4Cj6Y9x62/John-DeFilippovert.jpg) *If Hue Jackson brings in an offensive coordinator, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo should be near the top of the list.* I believe the best candidates for offensive coordinator are Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. DeFilippo can be hired directly into an OC role, but Nagy would require an upgrade - however, adding the title "Assistant Head Coach" to his duties would allow his hiring. Similarly, if quarterback Josh McCown retires after his injury-shortened season, he would be a great hire as a quarterbacks coach. Hue Jackson confirmed that he gave McCown an offer after last season, meaning that is a plausible move for the Browns. Alternatively, if Jackson isn't seen as the coach for the future, there are several rising stars who could be head coaching candidates. But first, there's the matter of what to do with Hue Jackson: rumors from the Bengals have it that they want him to coach for them next year. The Browns could pull off a trade for his rights, gain capital, and make all of Jackson, Dorsey, and Haslam happy - Jackson because he gets to coach the team to which he saw himself as he heir apparent, Dorsey because he gets to choose his preferred coach, and Haslam because he doesn't perpetuate the idea that he has a quick trigger on firing coaches, as Jackson would be his third firing in five years. ![tempToubGallery-15--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYt4ZHENzGZ5iuYiaQkAXgRaDHF6o9jgZTiQpGS6P2ATi/tempToubGallery-15--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.jpg) *Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, from Andy Reid's legendary coaching tree, is a hot name among NFL teams in search of a coach.* In that scenario, the frontrunners for the head coaching vacancy would be Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub, a respected leader and uniter who could manage the team as a whole while allowing his coordinators to handle each side of the ball, or Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, an up-and-coming coordinator. Whether Jackson stays and the team hires an offensive coordinator, or he leaves and the team flips the coaching staff, these moves should help the team to succeed in both the short and long term. # Free Agency The Browns have one pending free agent of any consequence: running back Isaiah Crowell. Re-signing him shouldn't be a priority, but if he is willing to come back for a reasonable deal, there's no reason not to bring him back. He's been mildly disappointing, but he hasn't been bad. As far as targets for signing go, I believe this team, with several well-defined holes, should look to fill all of them with veterans, whether to mentor a young player or even to bridge the gap until a young player is ready to take over. ![alex-smith-011117-getty-ftrjpg_1v9hrw1sfkvc81nzaouts6ckla.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmT5N2e6MsB1LePerMHRaimfq7n2DDZgMvmU6kiz8mcNcX/alex-smith-011117-getty-ftrjpg_1v9hrw1sfkvc81nzaouts6ckla.jpg) *Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith could be out as the team looks to transition to rookie Patrick Mahomes in 2018.* In order from biggest to smallest need, the Browns should target: QB: Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, Sam Bradford, Josh McCown, Jay Cutler CB: Trumaine Johnson, Prince Amukamara, D.J. Hayden FS: LaMarcus Joyner Slot WR: Jarvis Landry These signings set up a bridge or a mentor for the QB of the future, while adding young starters at three positions of enormous need. # NFL Draft In the draft, the Browns should identify and target their QB of the future, as well as depth at WR, a long-term starter at FS and CB, a RB to challenge or replace Crowell, a DE to add to the pass rushing rotation, and an OT to groom as Joe Thomas's heir apparent. ![Josh_Rosen_vs_Virginia_(cropped).jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmacsW9jJo1gpfbr6AiBCZ2xDeeC1JqjFR2BThu3WU41eC/Josh_Rosen_vs_Virginia_(cropped).jpg) *UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen is the top QB prospect in the 2018 NFL draft.* **Round 1, Pick 1: Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA** Rosen is the most NFL-ready QB prospect in the draft, coming from a pro style offense where he was asked to make reads, audibles, and decisions for himself. His mechanics are impeccable, and his accuracy and arm strength are absolutely insane. *Alternative choice: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville* **Round 1, Pick 4: Minkah Fitzpatrick, FS/CB, Alabama** The best defensive player in the draft, Fitzpatrick plays man coverage and deep zone better than anybody else in the draft. He is probably the top CB in the class, but his elite FS play and insane versatility put him over the top. *Alternative choices: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State; Derwin James, S, Florida State; Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama; Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State* **Round 2, Pick 33: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa** Jackson is a tall, lanky cornerback with very good speed and ball skills. He fits the aggressive Gregg Williams mold, and would elevate the secondary play immediately. *Alternative choices: Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M; Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville; Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia* **Round 2, Pick 39: Derrius Guice, RB, LSU** Guice is an explosive runner who has the ability to be a three-down back in the NFL. He allows Duke Johnson to be more of a pass catcher, where he shines, as Guice takes most of the carries and inspires confidence with his consistent production - if he can duplicate his college production. *Alternative choices: Anthony Miller, WR, Memphis; Damien Harris, RB, Alabama; Tarvarus McFadden, CB, Florida State, Chukwuma Okorafor, OT, Western Michigan* **Round 2, Pick 64: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State** A powerful bullrusher off the edge who plays well both against the run and the pass. He should be a valuable addition to the DE rotation. *Alternative choices: Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn; Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia; Royce Freeman, RB, Oregon; DeShon Elliott, FS, Texas; Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA; Desmond Harrison, OT, West Georgia; J.C. Jackson, CB, Maryland* **Round 3, Pick 65: Jamarco Jones, OT, Ohio State** A balanced blocker who should fit well at left tackle in the NFL. A year or two behind Joe Thomas should help his technique. This draft fills immediate holes with long-term starters, and finally finds the quarterback of the future, the team's first pick of the litter since Tim Couch in 1999. Unlike Couch, Rosen will be in a position to succeed from day one, whether he sits behind the veteran we brought in, or he beats the veteran for the starting position. These acquisitions should result in a team that can, and should, compete for the AFC North title in 2018.

titleThe Fault(s) in our Browns | A look at the Cleveland Browns
bodyThe Cleveland Browns fell to 0-14 on Sunday with a crushing loss to the divisional rival Baltimore Ravens. Staring the NFL's fifth winless season since World War II, and first since the 2008 Detroit Lions, in the face for the second consecutive year after starting 0-14 last season as well, clearly there are some enormous issues with the team. Let's explore them. # The Roster ![5a2b5c812b12e.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZ2k8d2aXRrPeNC7zyVUjeCcEpqUCVMtJKEqEjmAfE4DJ/5a2b5c812b12e.jpg) *Browns owner Jimmy Haslam (right) introduces the team's new general manager, John Dorsey (left). (John Kuntz/The Plain Dealer via AP)* If head coach Hue Jackson and new general manager John Dorsey are to be believed, the problems begin and end with the players on the field. Jackson said earlier this year, "I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have" regarding his coaching record of 1-27. Dorsey claimed, "The guys before me didn't get real players. I'm going to get him [Hue] real players." However, that doesn't tell the whole story. Let's break this down by position groups. ## Offensive Line This unit had been lackluster for a decade and a half since the Browns' return in 1999. There were bright spots, such as center Jeff Faine, but the Browns didn't get a bonafide star on the line until they drafted left tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall pick in 2007. ![usa_today_9521170.0.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYxqKmCVH41g9gbt5XqTjUjNN1rx9ZqViK2DdoitxLBdX/usa_today_9521170.0.jpg) *Left tackle Joe Thomas and left guard Joel Bitonio make up one of the best left side duos in the league. (Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports)* Joe Thomas has been a perennial All-Pro and consistently one of the best players in the league since his rookie season. This year, before tearing his triceps and being placed on injured reserve, he was rated the second best tackle in the NFL by Pro Football Focus, a site which grades players based on how they perform on every snap and extrapolates those grades into a score out of 100. Thomas scored an 86.4 this season, which PFF considers above the threshold for a high-quality starter. The team added left guard Joel Bitonio in the second round of the 2014 draft that added busts Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel. Unlike those two, drafted before him, Bitonio has been one of the best guards in the league, and has been robbed of postseason honors each of the last two seasons by the injury bug; he missed six games in 2015 and 11 games in 2016. This year, however, he's been healthy, and PFF ranks him the sixth best guard this season with a grade of 85.6, another high-quality starter. The departure of Pro Bowler Alex Mack after the 2015 season left a hole at center, which was ineffectually filled by Cam Erving for a pair of years. This offseason, however, the Browns signed ex-Green Bay Packer J.C. Tretter to play center, and he's been decent, bouncing back strongly after a rocky start. On the year as a whole, Tretter is PFF's 15th ranked center with a grade of 71.0, placing him solidly in the average category. Right guard was a question mark for the Browns entering the 2017 offseason, as longtime depth player and spot starter John Greco would miss time up to and including the start of the season with an injury to the Lisfranc joint requiring surgery. Rather than wait and hope for him to return healthy, the Browns signed ex-Cincinnati Bengal guard Kevin Zeitler, who has played excellently all season. PFF has him ranked 10th among all guards with a grade of 81.5, placing him in the above average group. Right tackle was another issue coming into the offseason, with second-year player Shon Coleman, coming off of a rookie season hampered by recovery from surgery to repair a torn MCL suffered in college, the likely replacement for departing free agent and moderate starter Austin Pasztor. Coleman, however, has gotten up to speed over the course of the season, and despite an atrocious start to the season, is now ranked the 50th guard in the league with a poor grade of 55.4. He has, however, been very solid in the rushing attach, grading at an average 74.7, good enough to rank 32nd, a top-half starter, as a run blocker. The team has committed to building in the trenches on offense, and it's shown, as the starting unit is one of the best in the league. ## Backs and Receivers One of Cleveland's greatest players, and probably their most famous, was fullback Jim Brown. With other superstars like Hall of Fame running backs Leroy Kelly and Marion Motley, as well as wide receiver Paul Warfield and tight end Ozzie Newsome, this position group has a strong pedigree in Cleveland. ![duke-johnson-marcus-williams_pg_600.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSYBEMjPLuvFUgygSdg9jxzYkCxj5ZxAgQLzHKRzae8zn/duke-johnson-marcus-williams_pg_600.jpg) *Duke Johnson eludes a tackle, something he does better than most backs in the league. (David Richard/AP)* Running back Isaiah Crowell is an easy player to dislike. His footwork isn't perfect, often resulting in stumbles as he tries to make his way through the line. He goes down easily to contact. He doesn't have the best vision, too often missing holes to run through. He is poor in pass protection. But when he gets into the open field, he's fast enough to make a big play happen. On the season, he's rushed for 788 yards and two touchdowns on 179 carries, good for an average of 4.4 yards per carry. That puts him at 16th in the league in yards, 14th in yards per carry, and a measly 51st in touchdowns. Those numbers don't look bad, but considering the caliber of offensive line he's running behind, he hasn't had to do much on his own to put those stats up. He's not a very good receiver out of the backfield, either; catching 27 passes for just 183 yards gives him an average per reception of 6.8 yards, good for 67th in the league. Fellow running back Duke Johnson sees much less usage than Crowell, which is absolutely mystifying: on a mere 72 carries (just four more than quarterback DeShone Kizer), he has racked up 308 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and has been electric in the passing game as well, leading all Cleveland players with 61 catches and 537 yards, and adding a further three receiving touchdowns. His 8.8 yards per catch make him the eighth most efficient pass-catching RB in the NFL. But it's not the numbers that make him so exciting - Johnson is fantastic at creating beyond the point of help by his blockers. According to PFF, Johnson ranks 15th in their elusive rating, a measure of how often a player forces missed tackles. Over the last three seasons, his first three in the NFL, Johnson is the only player in the league to have forced over 20 missed tackles each season. He has the makings of a star, and will be very fun to watch for years to come. Fullback Danny Vitale, nicknamed the Superback in college for his ability to do everything, has done very little in the NFL, struggling to catch the ball and to block in the running game. He has been able to competently pass block, though, so it isn't all bad. He may improve with more usage, but right now, he's a pretty poor player at an underused position. Wide receiver Josh Gordon, back from suspension for the first time since the final six games of the 2014 season, has not missed a beat in his first three games of the season. His 12 catches for 201 yards and a touchdown give him 16.8 yards per reception, good for seventh in the league, and 67 yards per game, which puts him 11th in the NFL. His PFF receiving grade of 81.3 is enough to rank him 22nd in the league, despite not playing a down of professional football in nearly three years. Fellow receiver Corey Coleman has been much maligned by a fan base that desperately wishes the Browns had used hindsight to stay put at second overall in the 2016 draft and taken quarterback and current MVP candidate Carson Wentz. Instead, they traded away from the mechanically questionable prospect and selected Coleman, a speedy, very athletic receiver. Appearing in only eight games this season, thanks to a broken hand in week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, Coleman has not put up wow-worthy numbers as DeShone Kizer's best target, catching 21 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 13.5 yards per catch, 32nd in the league, and 35.5 yards per game, 44th in the league. His receiving grade of 69.6 makes him PFF's 72nd ranked receiver, but he has done better as defenses have had to shift attention away from him to account for the reinstated Gordon. Rookie tight end David Njoku has been an absolute wonder, tying the rookie TE record of four touchdowns in a season with two more games to go. On top of those scores, he has caught 29 passes for 335 yards, giving him 11.6 yards per reception, third among tight ends, and 23.9 yards per game, fourth among tight ends. While he is not a good blocker, his receiving score of 73.6 makes him PFF's 15th ranked TE this season. Njoku, touted as a raw prospect with a very high ceiling, has a lot of room to improve on this very good season, and should be an exciting player for years to come. Fellow tight end Seth DeValve has had a nearly identical season statistically, with one more reception, 48 more yards, and three fewer touchdowns. Also lacking as a blocker, PFF's 70.4 receiving score makes him their 23rd ranked TE this season. ## Quarterback Since the franchise's rebirth in 1999, the Browns have started 26 different players at quarterback. From the time they joined the NFL in 1950 to the move to Baltimore in 1995, they started a total of 29. With this sad carousel spinning away for 18 years, it's understandable that fans clamor for the unknown over the known commodities they've seen on the field. This year was no different. ![MyQKUh7.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRgYUbLhatGUKrG3zrWeYCjLy6Uh1k3jdM5qBQbc9pK3f/MyQKUh7.jpg) *DeShone Kizer clicks his heels in celebration after rushing for a touchdown.* Rookie DeShone Kizer, drafted in the second round of the 2017 draft, was widely recognized as a low-floor, high-ceiling prospect with poor mechanics and decision-making skills. Many analysts opined that he needed time to sit and learn the game before going out and starting. The Browns, however, thought they knew better. After lackluster preseason performances from salary dump acquisition Brock Osweiler and second-year players Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan, and a few clutch throws from Kizer late in the games to steal a comeback win in an undefeated preseason, Kizer was named the starter week 1 vs the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Kizer looked good, keeping the team within a field goal, but gave the game away on a late interception in scoring position - which would become a theme for him. Including that game, Kizer has turned the ball over in scoring position 12 times this season, single-handedly costing the team two games and removing them from four more which they could conceivably have won. Only seven quarterbacks have as many interceptions as Kizer does turnovers in scoring position, and none come close to his league-leading 19 total interceptions, throwing one on a staggering 4.6% of his passes. His nine additional fumbles place him sixth in the league and firmly atop the overall turnover rankings. Even if he wasn't turning the ball over with alarming frequency, Kizer still would not be a good quarterback. His 53.9% completion rate, worst in the league, merely improves to 56.5%, which would still be third worst in the league, when his interceptions are removed. His TD%, which shows that he throws a TD on 2.2% of his passes, is third worst in the league. His 5.8 yards per attempt, 4.2 adjusted yards per attempt, passer rating of 59.4, tQBR of 24.5, and 3.50 adjusted net yards per attempt are worst in the league, while his 5.03 net yards per attempt is second from the bottom, and his 184.5 yards per game is second worst among passers who have started every game they've played in. Pressure and abuse haven't been the culprit for Kizer, though, like they were for poor Tim Couch and his Houston counterpart David Carr. Kizer has been sacked on 7.0% of his dropbacks, 16th in the league. That's not ideal, but it isn't bad, especially when considering that his play style, often scrambling in the pocket to extend plays, leads to more pressure and sacks than a pocket passer's play style does. The biggest flaws in Kizer's game are his poor decision-making, his slow reads, and his inaccuracy. Decision-making can be fixed; it's a common enough issue for rookie quarterbacks. Even all-time greats and can't-miss prospects like Peyton Manning have had to overcome this hurdle. However, slow eyes and inaccuracy have less history of repair. Even the fixed mechanics of Blake Bortles haven't helped him be more accurate, just as the wonky mechanics of Phillip Rivers and Carson Wentz didn't cause them to be inaccurate. And slow eyes were the biggest issue with Geno Smith out of college - he hasn't been able to rectify them. To his credit, Kizer does do one thing well - he succeeds when he tucks the ball and runs with it. Running more than any quarterback not named Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, or Tyrod Taylor, his 350 rushing yards on 68 carries, an average of 5.1 yards per carry, compares favorably to Taylor and isn't far off of Newton - Wilson, who is having an absolutely incredible season, leads all rushing quarterbacks by an entire yard per carry. Kizer's five rushing touchdowns, however, tie Newton, Josh McCown, and Marcus Mariota for the league lead among quarterbacks. PFF has him at an 83.5 rushing grade, good for 11th among QBs and 5th among those with more than four attempts per game. The positives on the ground, however, are not nearly enough to outweigh his negatives in his primary role as a passer. PFF's scores agree, as his fourth-worst, and worst among all starters, passing grade of 47.4 drags his overall grade down to 51.6, worst among starters and 12th worst of all 68 quarterbacks who have taken a snap this year. ## Defensive Line Back to the positives after that depressing delve into Cleveland's quarterback's stats, we come to possibly both the youngest and strongest unit on the team. ![myles-garrett.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWK2fuFCbJsR6n7RPoQv6QpaJgyCZryvx1eVNjPwEFrwD/myles-garrett.jpg) *Myles Garrett sacks Jets quarterback Josh McCown. (Ron Schwane/AP)* Defensive end Myles Garrett has absolutely lived up to the hype associated with the first overall draft pick. He's amassed 5 sacks despite only starting seven games, and amassed a 14th-best pass rush grade of 86.1, but his real impact has been away from the play. The attention offenses have had to give him freed up his teammates for 26 total team sacks, and his play against the run has been very good as well, with his 85.9 run defense grade putting him 13th among edge rushers according to PFF. Opposite Garrett, Emmanuel Ogbah has used the offenses' focus on Garrett to his advantage. Before going out for the season with an injury, Ogbah tied for the league lead in tackles for loss, excelling against the run and playing well as a pass rusher with 4 sacks of his own. He's also amassed five pass knockdowns, showing his feel for timing. As a rotational pass rusher, Carl Nassib's 2 sacks and five batted passes aren't a bad stat line, and he also compiled an 80.7 rating against the run, per PFF. Defensive tackle Danny Shelton, while he hasn't gotten much pressure in the pass rush, with zero sacks on the year, has been great at penetrating against the run, amassing an 85.4 PFF grade in run defense. Trevon Coley has been pretty bad since he amassed 2 sacks and a fumble recovery in the early season, failing to get consistent pressure and stop the run. He really should not be starting, as there are better players on the roster at the second defensive tackle position. Rookie Larry Ogunjobi has been an enormous surprise, flashing consistently in run defense and getting penetration against the pass despite his extremely unrefined technique. His 81.5 overall grade and 83.3 run defense grade from PFF hold this out. ## Linebackers The most disappointing position group this year after a good showing last year, much of their failure can be attributed to the defensive scheme and its overcompensation for a weaker defensive backfield by asking the linebackers to take on much more responsibility. ![Schobert-Pick.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWQpGxebfvx8bGu7Xq6XtUzRpSwb9omYnHexM4mVmCPtA/Schobert-Pick.jpg) *Joe Schobert returns an interception against the Minnesota Vikings. (Alan Crowhurst/Getty Images)* Jamie Collins was a surprise acquisition at the trade deadline last season, and even more of a surprise free agent re-signing. However, before going down for the season with an injury, Collins had been less than impressive. In six games, he had one sack, one interception, three passes defended, and one forced fumble. His PFF overall of 35.9 shows a disappointing season, and he wasn't even redeemed by one facet of his game, as he posted a run defense grade of 44.7, a coverage grade of 36.4, and a pass rush grade of 49.1. Middle linebacker Joe Schobert has been the most impressive of the group, coming off of a less than stellar rookie season to rack up the second most tackles in the league. He has also recorded 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, an interception, and two passes defended. PFF has him at an average 74.4 overall, but he excels in run defense, where he has a 79.1 grade. Christian Kirksey has been in position to succeed more in recent weeks than early in the season, coming up with 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and five passes defended. He ranks third in the league in tackles. His run defense has been solid all year, grading at a 73.7, but the rest of his grades suffer from his poor start, giving him a 51.0 overall grade. James Burgess, filling in for Collins, has done admirably. He's recorded 3 sacks, a forced fumble, and three passes defended. He's done better than I expected, and PFF even has him graded higher than Collins. ## Defensive Backs ![hue-jackson-isnt-changing-his-stance-on-jabrill-peppers-hit-cleveland-browns-quick-hits-vqlafesxw.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSPAu1gZxiU811AUytuDB48zdXu54wusFotsPnfuMETZw/hue-jackson-isnt-changing-his-stance-on-jabrill-peppers-hit-cleveland-browns-quick-hits-vqlafesxw.jpg) *Jabrill Peppers delivers a hit to Cincinnati Bengals receiver Josh Malone, jarring the ball loose, as Jamar Taylor looks on. Peppers was flagged and fined for this hit.* Cornerback Jason McCourty, after starting the year hot, has fallen off. Early in the season, there was an argument that he was the best corner in the league. He had three interceptions in the first six games, but hasn't recorded one since. Jamar Taylor has disappointed playing on the outside. He has not recorded an interception, and has not been able to keep with top receivers. Briean Boddy-Calhoun, a fan favorite, has improved on his rookie year, blossoming into one if the best slot corners in the league. Per PFF, he is our highest rated defensive back. Throughout the season, Jabrill Peppers has shown drastic improvement. Playing deep safety for the first time in his career, his anticipation and instincts needed to improve, and he's gone from arriving as the player goes down early in the year to coming up to make plays. He made a great play in the Bengals game, knocking the ball out to force an incompletion on third down - the play was flagged, and Peppers later fined, for a hit to a defenseless receiver, a penalty which was much maligned by pundits around the league. Peppers has gone from a liability to a decent player. Derrick Kindred has been a breakout player for the defense, playing decently in coverage, recording an interception, while being PFF's fourth ranked safety in rush defense. ## Special Teams ![iggiQurF.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYiZUk7sP5EHxVqBpTCn7gcTqnWykuaLGjKiq7nvMYsM9/iggiQurF.jpg) *Zane Gonzalez kicks a field goal. ([@ZaneG_5](https://twitter.com/zaneg_5)/Twitter)* Having a rocky season, kicker Zane Gonzalez has been inconsistent from outside of 35 yards. This season, however, has been better for Zane than Phil Dawson's rookie season was. At 72.2%, Gonzalez is the fourth worst kicker by percentage in the league, but he is 20th in the league at 50+ yard field goal attempts by percent, and has only missed one extra point - his only miss inside of 34 yards. Britton Colquitt, with 48.1 yards per punt, is the fourth best punter in the league. His 1.5% touchback percentage is third best in the league. His net average of 40.7 yards is 16th in the league. # Conclusion The 2017 Cleveland Browns are possibly the most talented team to ever lose 14 games in a season. Many positions have quality starters, and several of the most important positions are filled with some of the best players in the league at their position. The biggest holes on this team are the obvious at quarterback, a pretty serious one at cornerback, free safety, and slot receiver, and a would-be-nice upgrade at running back. If those holes are filled, this team could be a contender as early as 2018, and is poised to show the greatest single-season turnaround in professional sports history.

"body": "The Cleveland Browns fell to 0-14 on Sunday with a crushing loss to the divisional rival Baltimore Ravens. Staring the NFL's fifth winless season since World War II, and first since the 2008 Detroit Lions, in the face for the second consecutive year after starting 0-14 last season as well, clearly there are some enormous issues with the team. Let's explore them. \n\n# The Roster\n\n![5a2b5c812b12e.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZ2k8d2aXRrPeNC7zyVUjeCcEpqUCVMtJKEqEjmAfE4DJ/5a2b5c812b12e.jpg)\n*Browns owner Jimmy Haslam (right) introduces the team's new general manager, John Dorsey (left). (John Kuntz/The Plain Dealer via AP)*\n\nIf head coach Hue Jackson and new general manager John Dorsey are to be believed, the problems begin and end with the players on the field. Jackson said earlier this year, \"I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have\" regarding his coaching record of 1-27. Dorsey claimed, \"The guys before me didn't get real players. I'm going to get him [Hue] real players.\" However, that doesn't tell the whole story. Let's break this down by position groups. \n\n## Offensive Line\n\nThis unit had been lackluster for a decade and a half since the Browns' return in 1999. There were bright spots, such as center Jeff Faine, but the Browns didn't get a bonafide star on the line until they drafted left tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall pick in 2007. \n\n![usa_today_9521170.0.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYxqKmCVH41g9gbt5XqTjUjNN1rx9ZqViK2DdoitxLBdX/usa_today_9521170.0.jpg)\n*Left tackle Joe Thomas and left guard Joel Bitonio make up one of the best left side duos in the league. (Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports)*\n\nJoe Thomas has been a perennial All-Pro and consistently one of the best players in the league since his rookie season. \n\nThe team added left guard Joel Bitonio in the second round of the 2014 draft that added busts Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel. \n\nThe departure of Pro Bowler Alex Mack after the 2015 season left a hole at center, which was ineffectually filled by Cam Erving for a pair of years. \n\nRight guard was a question mark for the Browns entering the 2017 offseason, as longtime depth player and spot starter John Greco would miss time up to and including the start of the season with an injury to the Lisfranc joint requiring surgery. Rather than wait and hope for him to return healthy, the Browns signed ex-Cincinnati Bengal guard Kevin Zeitler, who has played excellently all season. PFF has him ranked 10th among all guards with a grade of 81.5, placing him in the above average group. \n\nRight tackle was another issue coming into the offseason, with second-year player Shon Coleman, coming off of a rookie season hampered by recovery from surgery to repair a torn MCL suffered in college, the likely replacement for departing free agent and moderate starter Austin Pasztor. \n\nThe team has committed to building in the trenches on offense, and it's shown, as the starting unit is one of the best in the league. \n\n## Backs and Receivers\n\nOne of Cleveland's greatest players, and probably their most famous, was fullback Jim Brown. With other superstars like Hall of Fame running backs Leroy Kelly and Marion Motley, as well as wide receiver Paul Warfield and tight end Ozzie Newsome, this position group has a strong pedigree in Cleveland. \n\n![duke-johnson-marcus-williams_pg_600.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSYBEMjPLuvFUgygSdg9jxzYkCxj5ZxAgQLzHKRzae8zn/duke-johnson-marcus-williams_pg_600.jpg)\n*Duke Johnson eludes a tackle, something he does better than most backs in the league. (David Richard/AP)*\n\nRunning back Isaiah Crowell is an easy player to dislike. \n\nFellow running back Duke Johnson sees much less usage than Crowell, which is absolutely mystifying: on a mere 72 carries (just four more than quarterback DeShone Kizer), he has racked up 308 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and has been electric in the passing game as well, leading all Cleveland players with 61 catches and 537 yards, and adding a further three receiving touchdowns. He has the makings of a star, and will be very fun to watch for years to come.\n\nFullback Danny Vitale, nicknamed the Superback in college for his ability to do everything, has done very little in the NFL, struggling to catch the ball and to block in the running game. He has been able to competently pass block, though, so it isn't all bad. He may improve with more usage, but right now, he's a pretty poor player at an underused position. \n\nWide receiver Josh Gordon, back from suspension for the first time since the final six games of the 2014 season, has not missed a beat in his first three games of the season. \n\nFellow receiver Corey Coleman has been much maligned by a fan base that desperately wishes the Browns had used hindsight to stay put at second overall in the 2016 draft and taken quarterback and current MVP candidate Carson Wentz. \n\nRookie tight end David Njoku has been an absolute wonder, tying the rookie TE record of four touchdowns in a season with two more games to go. \n\nFellow tight end Seth DeValve has had a nearly identical season statistically, with one more reception, 48 more yards, and three fewer touchdowns. Before going out for the season with an injury, Ogbah tied for the league lead in tackles for loss, excelling against the run and playing well as a pass rusher with 4 sacks of his own. He's also amassed five pass knockdowns, showing his feel for timing. \n\nAs a rotational pass rusher, Carl Nassib's 2 sacks and five batted passes aren't a bad stat line, and he also compiled an 80.7 rating against the run, per PFF. \n\nDefensive tackle Danny Shelton, while he hasn't gotten much pressure in the pass rush, with zero sacks on the year, has been great at penetrating against the run, amassing an 85.4 PFF grade in run defense. \n\nTrevon Coley has been pretty bad since he amassed 2 sacks and a fumble recovery in the early season, failing to get consistent pressure and stop the run. He really should not be starting, as there are better players on the roster at the second defensive tackle position. \n\nRookie Larry Ogunjobi has been an enormous surprise, flashing consistently in run defense and getting penetration against the pass despite his extremely unrefined technique. His 81.5 overall grade and 83.3 run defense grade from PFF hold this out. \n\n## Linebackers\n\nThe most disappointing position group this year after a good showing last year, much of their failure can be attributed to the defensive scheme and its overcompensation for a weaker defensive backfield by asking the linebackers to take on much more responsibility. \n\n![Schobert-Pick.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWQpGxebfvx8bGu7Xq6XtUzRpSwb9omYnHexM4mVmCPtA/Schobert-Pick.jpg)\n*Joe Schobert returns an interception against the Minnesota Vikings. (Alan Crowhurst/Getty Images)*\n\nJamie Collins was a surprise acquisition at the trade deadline last season, and even more of a surprise free agent re-signing. \n\nMiddle linebacker Joe Schobert has been the most impressive of the group, coming off of a less than stellar rookie season to rack up the second most tackles in the league. He has also recorded 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, an interception, and two passes defended. PFF has him at an average 74.4 overall, but he excels in run defense, where he has a 79.1 grade. \n\nChristian Kirksey has been in position to succeed more in recent weeks than early in the season, coming up with 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and five passes defended. He ranks third in the league in tackles. His run defense has been solid all year, grading at a 73.7, but the rest of his grades suffer from his poor start, giving him a 51.0 overall grade. \n\nJames Burgess, filling in for Collins, has done admirably. He's recorded 3 sacks, a forced fumble, and three passes defended. He's done better than I expected, and PFF even has him graded higher than Collins. \n\n## Defensive Backs\n\n![hue-jackson-isnt-changing-his-stance-on-jabrill-peppers-hit-cleveland-browns-quick-hits-vqlafesxw.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSPAu1gZxiU811AUytuDB48zdXu54wusFotsPnfuMETZw/hue-jackson-isnt-changing-his-stance-on-jabrill-peppers-hit-cleveland-browns-quick-hits-vqlafesxw.jpg)\n*Jabrill Peppers delivers a hit to Cincinnati Bengals receiver Josh Malone, jarring the ball loose, as Jamar Taylor looks on. Peppers was flagged and fined for this hit.*\n\nCornerback Jason McCourty, after starting the year hot, has fallen off. Early in the season, there was an argument that he was the best corner in the league. He had three interceptions in the first six games, but hasn't recorded one since. \n\nJamar Taylor has disappointed playing on the outside. He has not recorded an interception, and has not been able to keep with top receivers. \n\nBriean Boddy-Calhoun, a fan favorite, has improved on his rookie year, blossoming into one if the best slot corners in the league. Per PFF, he is our highest rated defensive back. \n\nThroughout the season, Jabrill Peppers has shown drastic improvement. Peppers has gone from a liability to a decent player.\n\nDerrick Kindred has been a breakout player for the defense, playing decently in coverage, recording an interception, while being PFF's fourth ranked safety in rush defense. \n\n## Special Teams\n\n![iggiQurF.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYiZUk7sP5EHxVqBpTCn7gcTqnWykuaLGjKiq7nvMYsM9/iggiQurF.jpg)\n*Zane Gonzalez kicks a field goal. ([@ZaneG_5](https://twitter.com/zaneg_5)/Twitter)*\n\nHaving a rocky season, kicker Zane Gonzalez has been inconsistent from outside of 35 yards. \n\nBritton Colquitt, with 48.1 yards per punt, is the fourth best punter in the league. His 1.5% touchback percentage is third best in the league. His net average of 40.7 yards is 16th in the league. \n\n# Conclusion\n\nThe 2017 Cleveland Browns are possibly the most talented team to ever lose 14 games in a season. Many positions have quality starters, and several of the most important positions are filled with some of the best players in the league at their position. \n\nThe biggest holes on this team are the obvious at quarterback, a pretty serious one at cornerback, free safety, and slot receiver, and a would-be-nice upgrade at running back. If those holes are filled, this team could be a contender as early as 2018, and is poised to show the greatest single-season turnaround in professional sports history.",

titleWhat is a Catch? | Analysis of the Jesse James play in the Steelers vs. Patriots game
bodySunday afternoon saw a great matchup between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers, two of the favorites to fight for the AFC championship. The close, competitive game came to a close with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing an interception in the endzone for a game-sealing turnover on third down and goal. However, the media and fan spotlight rests firmly on the play which took place two plays earlier, on first and goal. [![UNBELIEVABLE ENDING to Patriots vs. Steelers game! | Can't-Miss Play | NFL Wk 15 Highlights](http://img.youtube.com/vi/CKOfBQWPMos/0.jpg)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKOfBQWPMos "UNBELIEVABLE ENDING to Patriots vs. Steelers game! | Can't-Miss Play | NFL Wk 15 Highlights") *The stunning conclusion to the Patriots/Steelers matchup, courtesy of the NFL's [official YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/user/NFL)* On the play in question, Roethlisberger threw a pass to tight end Jesse James, who appeared to secure the ball as he twisted to stretch it across the plane of the goal line. The play was called the go-ahead touchdown on the field, but after several minutes of replay scrutiny by league officials, the referees ruled that the pass had fallen incomplete, as the receiver did not maintain possession of the football on his way to the ground. Did the referees make the correct call, in a moment that would prove pivotal to the game's outcome? To answer that question, we must delve into the rulebook for the NFL's definition of what constitutes a catch. Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3 deals with completed or intercepted passes: >A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds: a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and c. maintains control of the ball after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, until he has the ball long enough to clearly become a runner. A player has the ball long enough to become a runner when, after his second foot is on the ground, he is capable of avoiding or warding off impending contact of an opponent, tucking the ball away, turning up field, or taking additional steps (see 3-2-7-Item 2). Watching the play, James clearly fulfilled both a and b, securing the ball in the air and touching a knee to the ground. He couldn't complete c, though, as he fell to the ground and couldn't attempt to become a runner. This is where Item 1 of the rule comes into play: >**Item 1. Player Going to the Ground.** A player is considered to be going to the ground if he does not remain upright long enough to demonstrate that he is clearly a runner. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete. The basic idea with a player going to the ground while attempting to complete a catch is that he must maintain possession of the ball until his downward momentum has halted. In James's case, his stretch of the ball to break the plane of the goal line placed the ball in a position where it would contact the ground before his downward momentum would stop, and thus he would have to control the ball through its contact with the ground. Replay clearly shows that James lost control of the football as it contacted the ground, and he was unable to keep his hand under it to give himself a chance to regain control before it touched the ground. ![nef8nmstxp401.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYVZjEeezvFxWiQTxKu2Fg2sL6r6t3bkQGABedrcRJpVz/nef8nmstxp401.png) *A picture from Reddit user [/u/LeonardWilliams92](https://reddit.com/u/LeonardWilliams92) shows the football clearly on the ground with no hand beneath it* However, James had already crossed the plane of the goal line when the ball came out. Surely that counts for something here, as the play is stopped as soon as the ball crosses that plane, right? Item 3 of the catch rules clears that up: >**Item 3. End Zone Catches.** The requirements for a catch in the end zone are the same as the requirements for a catch in the field of play. This means that James needed to still complete the process of catching the ball in its entirety, controlling it through contact with the ground. Only when a receiver establishes possession can the play be stopped and ruled a touchdown. That takes care of the specific case of the play late in Sunday's game. But what about as a more general rule? Reddit user [/u/WaswereV2](https://reddit.com/u/WaswereV2) came up with a handy flowchart: ![2q6qykxy6q301.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNWCX1gwhVWRBQQqpYrjCGWxoRZMBGxJBiZ6GNmBiMdeX/2q6qykxy6q301.png) James's play derails from the traditional catch path, as he wasn't able to become a runner. He could still make the catch, but as he failed to survive contact with the ground without bobbling the ball and was unable to re-catch the ball before it hit the ground, the pass fell incomplete. In game-defining situations like this one, it is important to have clear rules independent of any interpretation on the part of the referees. This catch rule, though somewhat complicated and much maligned over the years, could not be clearer, nor more independent of interpretation. We just need to know and understand the nuances, because whether a player is upright or falling could be the difference between an easy touchdown to win the game and an incomplete pass resulting in a loss.

In James's case, his stretch of the ball to break the plane of the goal line placed the ball in a position where it would contact the ground before his downward momentum would stop, and thus he would have to control the ball through its contact with the ground.\n\nReplay clearly shows that James lost control of the football as it contacted the ground, and he was unable to keep his hand under it to give himself a chance to regain control before it touched the ground. \n\n![nef8nmstxp401.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYVZjEeezvFxWiQTxKu2Fg2sL6r6t3bkQGABedrcRJpVz/nef8nmstxp401.png)\n*A picture from Reddit user [/u/LeonardWilliams92](https://reddit.com/u/LeonardWilliams92) shows the football clearly on the ground with no hand beneath it*\n\nHowever, James had already crossed the plane of the goal line when the ball came out. Surely that counts for something here, as the play is stopped as soon as the ball crosses that plane, right?\n\nItem 3 of the catch rules clears that up:\n>**Item 3. End Zone Catches.** The requirements for a catch in the end zone are the same as the requirements for a catch in the field of play.\n\nThis means that James needed to still complete the process of catching the ball in its entirety, controlling it through contact with the ground. Only when a receiver establishes possession can the play be stopped and ruled a touchdown. \n\nThat takes care of the specific case of the play late in Sunday's game. But what about as a more general rule?\n\nReddit user [/u/WaswereV2](https://reddit.com/u/WaswereV2) came up with a handy flowchart:\n\n![2q6qykxy6q301.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNWCX1gwhVWRBQQqpYrjCGWxoRZMBGxJBiZ6GNmBiMdeX/2q6qykxy6q301.png)\n\nJames's play derails from the traditional catch path, as he wasn't able to become a runner. He could still make the catch, but as he failed to survive contact with the ground without bobbling the ball and was unable to re-catch the ball before it hit the ground, the pass fell incomplete. \n\nIn game-defining situations like this one, it is important to have clear rules independent of any interpretation on the part of the referees. This catch rule, though somewhat complicated and much maligned over the years, could not be clearer, nor more independent of interpretation. We just need to know and understand the nuances, because whether a player is upright or falling could be the difference between an easy touchdown to win the game and an incomplete pass resulting in a loss.",
