And, honestly, I don't know what to feel. The drawing on the left—the older one—was drawn so quickly and effortlessly, while the more recent one took me DAYS to finish. Until I worked on this piece, my drawings on average took 3 hours to finish, so I guess I did go out of my comfort zone to make the artwork.</p>\n<p>As you may have noticed, this is a redraw of the same character. Yet, these two artworks don't seem similar at all. In the former drawing, he looked tense and seemed to be waving his empty wine glass. On the other hand, the one on the right seemed to have a cold and calculating demeanor. And that is what I wanted to achieve, even in the older artwork. I don't mean to brag, but it was such a drastic improvement.</p>\n<p>To summarize, I'm quite satisfied to see my progress.</p>\n<p>I'd like to share some tips for you guys. I guarantee that it <em>will</em> help you improve.</p>\n<h2>How To Improve Your Art</h2>\n<p><em>Tip #1: USING REFERENCES</em></p>\n<p>I'm sure that this tip is in similar articles. Yes, even the greatest artists once had to learn from someone else. This is nothing to be ashamed of. After all, man himself has observed from nature, and drew inspiration from her. When I look at a man, or a woman, or a child, I study their faces; I notice that, when the sun is shining above, their faces seemed to glow, and when they are shunned from the light, their eyes looked dark and seemed to have no light in them. I observe, and I <em>learn.</em>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>Tip #2: PERSISTENCE</em></p>\n<p>Remember when I said that my artworks usually took 3 hours to finish? The reason for this is that they are always rushed and ergo, I do not take the time to improve my artwork. Instead, I stare at my half-finished project, and say, <em>\"Good enough.\"&nbsp;</em></p>\n<p>Perhaps the only way to avoid it, is to face it head-on. When don't want to finish a certain artwork anymore, you MUST persist.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>Tip #3: PATIENCE</em></p>\n<p>Have you tried to copy a great artist's work, and failed miserably, telling yourself that you aren't good enough? Listen. You cannot force yourself to be a great artist in a snap. You must build your skills. It takes time to be good in something.</p>\n<p>Anyway, those are the most effective tips I can think of. I'm about to show you a step by step tutorial of how I made this artwork. First of all, in case anyone's wondering, I used a digital tablet to draw this. The program I used is Paint tool SAI— this program is lit, it's especially suitable for beginners since it's easy to use. Anyway, let's proceed to the tutorial.</p>\n<p><em>Step one</em>, create a good sketch.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/sgqo9vaul/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>You may feel that this looks a little different from the final result. All artworks are like that.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>Step two, </em>the most <strong>awkward</strong> part.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/tvs8yljnh/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>First, I filled the sketch with <strong>base colors</strong>. Base colors are like the very foundation of your colors. After that, I adjusted the hue wheel and laid an even darker shade of the colors. This is to create more depth.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>Now we get to the fun part.</em></p>\n<p><em>Step three, </em><em><strong>blend.</strong></em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/5fa344qml/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>This is the best part of painting. You may start blending anywhere, but I usually start at the face, more specifically, the eyes.</p>\n<p><em>Step four,</em> blend more. Hey, that rhymes. ,':^D</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/5s1had6cd/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p><em>Tip: For the outline, use a thin but clear and dark pencil. Don't try to perfect it if you are planning to paint it because it will become blended with the colors. Also, lower its opacity when it's finally time to blend.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/6ubnswwvh/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>The nose bothered me a lot so it felt satisfying to fix it.</p>\n<p><em>Step six,</em> since I was almost finished with the face, I fixed the neck and the arms.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s20.postimg.org/jlptzfm31/image.png\" width=\"626\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p><em>Step seven,</em> blend the dress. If you want to put a design over it(as in overlay), do so later. To give it a little more definition, you have to shade it with a darker color. Now, some artists prefer to draw the highlights first, but it's really hard.
