| body | **Image from CNN Philippines** History was made last week, and it's something I'm personally proud of. The Philippines emptied its buckets -- its many buckets of support, energy, and prayers for the wellbeing and victories of its Olympians; surely the country's efforts were not in vain. A Filipina weightlifter by the name of Hidilyn Diaz bringing home the Philippines' first gold Olympic medal after nearly a century of competing in the Olympic games. ***"Bayang magiliw, perlas ng silanganan... Alab ng puso, sa dibdib mo'y buhay... Lupang hinirang, duyan ka ng magiting... sa manlulupig, di ka pasisiil......"*** Tears rolled down my eyes. And it wasn't a waste of tears, I tell you. Come to think of it, it's about time... actually, long overdue. The Philippines is finally setting itself at par with the world's greatest athletes. The Pearl of the Orient Seas is finally raising itself up from beneath the waters and has begun to shine its rays on the global sports stage. To Diaz, Didal, Paalam, Petecio, Marcial, Magno, Pagunsan, Pagdanganan, Saso, Obiena, Knott, Yulo, Watanabe, Niervaez, Valdez, Gebbie, Rule, Ando -- the whole Philippine Olympic team: you know very well how proud our nation is of you. *Mabuhay ang Pilipino at ang Republika ng Pilipinas!* |

| title | Weekend Freewrite for May 16, 2020 // THE HOUSE LIBRARY |
| body | **"Marry your books and give birth to success."** That was a line that my grandmother always told me. She always told me that she loved reading books since she was a little girl. She carried on the tradition of reading books in our ancestral home for long hours, even staying up as late as 3 in the morning. Her books ranged from world history and psychology to Philippine education and biographies of famous people. The first book that she read to me was not a book full of text. It was a libretto. She isn't only a bibliophile -- she is also a musician in our province, formerly leading the cultural orchestra there. In my tender age of 4, she taught me all the symbols I could see: the staff, the G and F-clefs, the whole notes, half notes, even the rests, naturals, and the pianissimos scattered in the piece. Her wisdom came from the books she loved to read. Her life advice always came from books on practicality and even the Bible -- she, too, is a devout Catholic like the rest of my family. Whenever we'd go back home to the Philippines when school let out, she'd make it a point to make me and my two other cousins read at least one or two books for 2 hours, and she'd give us a mini exam to test our knowledge and comprehension. Frankly speaking, I didn't always appreciate the marvel of these hundred-paged, hardbound, sturdy reading materials. I preferred the newspapers, just like her husband -- my grandfather. I read the news, but she and my cousins read those dusty, faded books. Our house had a bedroom dedicated to all those books, together with a collection of thesis papers and dissertations. She made sure that our home was a source of knowledge. But not only that, she also made certain that we had to develop our patience. Patience in finding what we needed to know. **"Kids, our house didn't run on Google, won't run on Google, and will never run on Google."** My two cousins and I giggled at what she said, but we both understood its essence. After my grandparents left, our house stood empty. It remained that way until my father's younger brother opened one of the bedrooms for rent. One day, some random lady called my uncle and let her stay in the house together with her husband. Little did he know about the couple's background, which was about to surprise him in the weeks forward. A few weeks later, as we went home for the summer, the couple was still staying in the house. We treated them like family, and so did they. They were the kindest family guests we ever had. I got to know more of the couple, and I was fascinated by the insight they had. When I first met them, I asked how they were. The husband replied, "Oh, she's great, we're great, I'm great. We moved into the house, you know.". He then mentioned something fascinating to me. "Oh, Jose. I'm sure you're familiar of the room opposite the room we sleep in?" I replied, "Well, yes, Sir Jimmy. It's the house library. What about it?". He then replied with a stunning remark, "The library is a godsend. If it weren't for that room, we'd never be nearing completion on our Master's.". I talked with the husband further. He told me he and his wife were taking a Master's degree. He told me that he had never found a house like ours. A house that had so many thesis papers at their disposal. I was happy at that remark. But still, it was credits to my grandmother. But you know what else is in that room? Let me tell you. One night, I was sleeping in the house library. After all, it was a big room with ample space for one single bed. So I chose to sleep in it for two nights to fulfill my cravings for words. As I was reading Fifty Shades of Grey on my bed, I happened to glance on the floor on my left blind spot. It was a tooth floss. I picked it up and wondered where this could've come or fell from. The floss had small identifying marks on it. A series of equidistant black marks running down its entire length. "What's this? Where did this fall from?", I muttered silently. I started to look around the room for clues. I went high and low on the shelves until I found a spool of magnetic recording wire from the 1950s that my grandparents used to record whatever was happening at the time. The wire also had the black marks on the label. I then proceeded to tie the tooth floss on the recording wire, and then powered on the wire recorder to play the wire. "Henrietta, if you can hear me, come through. I need to talk to you.", I heard from the recording. The voice was of my grandfather. I didn't know who Henrietta was... until I heard the next voice on the wire. "Daddy?", the faint voice of a little girl emanated from the speakers. "Who is Henrietta? Who is she? What does she have to do with my grandpa?", I questioned to myself. I flipped the spool of tape on its rear and saw the name of the recording. ***"HENRIETTA - OUR DAUGHTER; 04/24/1956"*** "Oh sh*t. It was a seance!", I squealed while trying to lower my voice. I couldn't sleep that night. Until today, the mystery still haunts me. I'd never be able to forget that voice, truthfully. **"Daddy?"** |

"body": "**\"Marry your books and give birth to success.\"**\n\nThat was a line that my grandmother always told me. She always told me that she loved reading books since she was a little girl. She carried on the tradition of reading books in our ancestral home for long hours, even staying up as late as 3 in the morning. Her books ranged from world history and psychology to Philippine education and biographies of famous people. \n\nThe first book that she read to me was not a book full of text. \n\nHer wisdom came from the books she loved to read. \n\nFrankly speaking, I didn't always appreciate the marvel of these hundred-paged, hardbound, sturdy reading materials. I preferred the newspapers, just like her husband -- my grandfather. I read the news, but she and my cousins read those dusty, faded books. \n\nOur house had a bedroom dedicated to all those books, together with a collection of thesis papers and dissertations. She made sure that our home was a source of knowledge. But not only that, she also made certain that we had to develop our patience. Patience in finding what we needed to know.\n\n**\"Kids, our house didn't run on Google, won't run on Google, and will never run on Google.\"** My two cousins and I giggled at what she said, but we both understood its essence.\n\nAfter my grandparents left, our house stood empty. It remained that way until my father's younger brother opened one of the bedrooms for rent. One day, some random lady called my uncle and let her stay in the house together with her husband. Little did he know about the couple's background, which was about to surprise him in the weeks forward.\n\nA few weeks later as we went home for the summer, the couple was still staying in the house. We treated them like family, and so did they. They were the kindest family guests we ever had. I got to know more of the couple, and I was fascinated by the insight they had. When I first met them, I asked how they were. The husband replied, \"Oh, she's great, we're great, I'm great. We moved into the house, you know.\".\n\nHe then mentioned something fascinating to me. \"Oh, Jose. I'm sure you're familiar of the room opposite the room we sleep in?\"\n\nI replied, \"Well, yes, Sir Jimmy. It's the house library. What about it?\".\n\nHe then replied with a stunning remark, \"The library is a godsend. If it weren't for that room, we'd never be nearing completion on our Master's.\".\n\nI talked with the husband further. He told me he and his wife were taking a Master's degree. He told me that he had never found a house like ours. A house that had so many thesis papers at their disposal.\n\nI was happy at that remark. But still, it was credits to my grandmother.\n\nBut you know what else is in that room? Let me tell you.\n\nOne night, I was sleeping in the house library. After all, it was a big room with ample space for one single bed. So I chose to sleep in it for two nights to fulfill my cravings for words.\n\nAs I was reading Fifty Shades of Grey on my bed, I happened to glance on the floor on my left blind spot. It was a tooth floss. I picked it up and wondered where this could've come or fell from.\n\nThe floss had small identifying marks on it. A series of equidistant black marks running down its entire length. \"What's this? Where did this fall from?\", I muttered silently.\n\nI started to look around the room for clues. I went high and low on the shelves until I found a spool of magnetic recording wire from the 1950s that my grandparents used to record whatever was happening at the time. The wire also had the black marks on the label. I then proceeded to tie the tooth floss on the recording wire, and then powered on the wire recorder to play the wire.\n\n\"Henrietta, if you can hear me, come through. I need to talk to you.\", I heard from the recording.\n\nThe voice was of my grandfather. I didn't know who Henrietta was... until I heard the next voice on the wire.\n\n\"Daddy?\", the faint voice of a little girl emanated from the speakers.\n\n\"Who is Henrietta? Who is she? What does she have to do with my grandpa?\", I questioned to myself.\n\nI flipped the spool of tape on its rear and saw the name of the recording.\n\n***\"HENRIETTA - OUR DAUGHTER; 04/24/1956\"***\n\n\"Oh sh*t. It was a seance!\", I squealed while trying to lower my voice.\n\nI couldn't sleep that night. Until today, the mystery still haunts me. I'd never be able to forget that voice, truthfully.\n\n**\"Daddy?\"**",

| title | MY TAKE on Day 937: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: chiseled |
| body | When I looked at today's prompt, I realized that this word has already had such a huge impact in my life. **"Chiseled".** **Image courtesy of Living Hope Church** I always get asked by so many people, "Jose, how do you view yourself?". And I have a very simple answer for that, but I'll also give you a brief explanation as to why. I view myself as a sculpture. On me are fine details that have been sculpted by God. But because I am human, and we are all human, we sin. And when we sin, we tend to grow more on our sculpted selves some unwanted angles and excess overhang. And what's God gotta do with it? He is the one who chisels away those unwanted angles and excess overhang. In short, He chisels away my sin when I come to Him to admit and confess my sins. In repentance, I am once again sculpted by Him, so that I'd continue looking pristine. See, this is the essence of doing the right thing: admitting that we have made mistakes. It doesn't make us any less human, but it encourages us to act human, even in our deepest embarrassments. I don't see myself as a perfect teenager; we ain't perfect, guys. But we are called to live our life in love and holiness. During this pandemic, let us strive to be loving and kind as He called us. Keep your inboxes open -- someone might just want to have a chat. Keep that smile on your face, it's a hope for a better future after this fiasco. God bless us all. |

| title | Me and Mine: A Letter to Myself |
| body | **May 15, 2020** **11:11pm** Dear self, How are you? It's been a while since we last caught up. Our schedules don't always seem to match, and I'm finally happy to see you again. Now that I have you, let's get some things straight. How are you? I asked you that earlier. How are you, really? What's been going on in your life? Ever felt happy? Sad? Faint? Weak? Embarrassed? Depressed? Anxious? Elated? Excited? See, we're in a quarantine right now. You're doing online classes. You're dealing with toxic friendships. You're doing your best to be a good son, a good brother to your good friends. Imagine how much of your time, mind, and good heart you're pouring out. You know, self? I couldn't be ever more prouder of you. Even at your most troublesome moments, you just shrugged them off like that and went on with your normal life. In your successes, you never forgot to thank the Lord for it. You showed that even if you are human and you tend to make mistakes, you still do your best to be of service, to be a good friend -- brother -- shoulder to cry on. Self, I know that a lot of people always mistake you for this overconfident, self-seeking, attention-craving, perfectionist moron. You admit it at times, but even if you are a perfectionist, I don't see you the way they see you. I see you as someone who worked his way to the top to inspire others around him. Self, I know that a lot of people can't stand you no more, and decided to let go of you. I've seen you do everything to keep it, but I know it was God's will to take them away from you. Let them go, now. Let them go. I can't stand seeing your heart with thorns of the past sticking out of it. You may have done so many wrong things, and you may have lost so many friends over the years, but... self... this is what I want to tell you. **NEVER LET THAT BECOME A HINDRANCE IN INSPIRING MORE PEOPLE.** Your garbage today is garbage, but tomorrow is a different day: you have the choice to do more garbage or start making diamonds. Never give up on the dreams that keep you fuelled for success. Never give up on the people who actually support you -- your family, true friends, your community, God. KEEP THE FAITH, self. Don't let go of it. ***So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. - Isaiah 41:10*** Keep going, self. Keep going. I love you, and I'm here for you. I'll always be at the back of your head. Love, Your inner self xx |

Our schedules don't always seem to match, and I'm finally happy to see you again.\n\nNow that I have you, let's get some things straight.\n\nHow are you? I asked you that earlier. How are you, really? What's been going on in your life? Ever felt happy? Sad? Faint? Weak? Embarrassed? Depressed? Anxious? Elated? Excited?\n\nSee, we're in a quarantine right now. You showed that even if you are human and you tend to make mistakes, you still do your best to be of service, to be a good friend -- brother -- shoulder to cry on.\n\nSelf, I know that a lot of people always mistake you for this overconfident, self-seeking, attention-craving, perfectionist moron. | body | Good morning, afternoon, or evening... wherever and whatever time of day you may see this. My name is Jose. I am a student and journalist based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I am a pure and proud Filipino. I've started my blockchain blogging journey since 2018, and have sadly been inconsistent in maintaining a steady stream of content due to hectic schedules and content restrictions. I am mainly interested in news. News as in the latest world events, yes! My 7 year campus journalism work has molded me to have a nose for the news, even outside the academe. My other interests include music, technology, and spirituality. As for my talents, I sing and play the guitar. That's all -- HAHAHA! My hobbies are writing articles, studying my lessons, and fixing computers. As far as spirituality goes, I am a devout Roman Catholic. That's all about me in a nutshell, and I am very open for Hive friendships in this community and others. Thank you for your time and stay safe! **Mabuhay!** |
