      "body": "https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/5572/production/_132347812_img_8846.jpg.webp\n\nIsrael is accused of having targeted a group of Palestinian civilians with no links to armed groups and who posed no threat to Israeli forces, according to witnesses in the occupied West Bank.\n\nSeven men - four of them brothers - were killed in an Israeli air strike early on 7 January, as they sat around a fire next to the road through al-Shuhada village, 10km (six miles) from the city of Jenin.\n\nThe BBC has spoken to relatives of the men killed, witnesses in the area at the time, and a paramedic at the scene. All provided strong evidence that the men were not members of armed militant groups, and that no clashes with Israeli forces were taking place in the location at the time.\n\nKhalid al-Ahmad, the first paramedic to arrive that morning, is convinced the men were doing nothing wrong.\n\n\"One of them was wearing slippers and pyjamas,\" he told the BBC. \"Don't you think that someone who wants to resist [the Israeli occupation] would at least wear proper shoes?\"\n\nThe Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has linked the strike to a military operation hours earlier in Jenin refugee camp, in which a female soldier was killed.\n\nGrave of the four Darweesh brothers\nImage caption,\nThe men are buried not far from al-Shuhada village\nThe IDF directed us to a statement it released at the time, which said that \"during the operation, an aircraft struck a terrorist squad that hurled explosives at the forces operating in the area\".\n\nFootage from both the IDF and a nearby CCTV camera does not show any clear evidence of confrontations with Palestinians in al-Shuhada at the time of the strike.\n\nThe four brothers - Alaa, Hazza, Ahmad, and Rami Darweesh - were aged between 22 and 29 years old. They were Palestinian emigrants who had returned from Jordan a few years earlier with their mother and five siblings.\n\nThey had Israeli permits, allowing them to cross into Israel for agricultural work each day. These permits are often difficult to obtain and are rapidly withdrawn from anyone Israel sees as a security threat - or as linked to someone who is.\n\nThe three men killed with them were members of their extended family.\n\nPermits for two of the brothers, seen by the BBC, were issued in September 2023 and valid for several months. The borders with Israel have been closed to Palestinian workers since the Hamas attacks in October.\n\nThe paramedic, Khalid al-Ahmad, said that after 20 years working in Jenin, he was used to scanning trauma sites for weapons or explosives, as a basic safety routine.\n\n\"I would tell you if there were weapons there,\" he said. \"Honestly, these were civilians. There was nothing relating to the resistance - no bullets, no weapons. And there was no Israeli presence at all.\"\n\nArmed Palestinian groups - usually quick to claim any members killed by Israeli forces - have been silent about these seven men, with no statement describing any of them as \"martyrs\" for their cause.\n\nAt their funeral, their bodies were wrapped in the flags of Palestinian groups, including Hamas. The bodies of those killed by Israel are often wrapped in the flags of movements supported by friends or family members - even when the deceased are not supporters themselves.\n\nRelatives and neighbours all told us the men had no connection with militant groups - as did the head of Jenin's main hospital, Wissam Bakr, where the bodies were brought that morning.\n\nIbtesam Asous\nImage caption,\nIbtesam Asous had not expected all four of her sons to die\n\"They are not armed, they are not fighters,\" he said. \"Normally, it's clear from the people if he's a fighter with one of the militant groups. These seven? No, no, it's sure, all of them are civilians.\"\n\nIt was at the hospital that the men's mother, Ibtesam Asous, saw her sons' bodies.\n\n\"They were all gone,\" she said. \"I expected that one of them might have been martyred, but not all four of them. I was shocked when I saw that they had all been killed.\"\n\nWe asked the Israeli army to explain why this group of men was targeted.\n\nA spokesperson replied that soldiers had begun pursuing the \"terrorists who murdered an Israeli citizen\" and that the air strike targeted \"a terrorist squad that hurled explosives at the forces operating in the area, putting them in danger\".\n\nHours before the air strike in al-Shuhada, a 19-year-old border policewoman, Shai Germai, was killed when her vehicle hit an explosive device during clashes with Palestinian fighters in Jenin Camp.\n\nAfterwards, the army convoy withdrew from Jenin through al-Shuhada, where the Darweesh brothers had gathered with their three distant relatives, near an all-night coffee shop popular with agricultural workers and customers for the nearby dawn vegetable market.\n\nNight-vision drone footage provided by the IDF shows small flashes followed by an explosion as vehicles pass along the road - a heat pattern that could be produced by a petrol bomb. The video does not have a date-stamp or time-stamp.\n\nThe army also provided similar footage of its air strike on the location - but the two pieces of video are cut and edited together, making it impossible to tell how much time passed between them.\n\nWe asked the IDF to clarify the timings of both events. It replied that it would not be providing any more comment or information.\n\nThe timing is important, because of the circumstances needed under international law to justify using lethal force.\n\nThe UN's human rights body described the situation in the West Bank at the end of last year as \"alarming and urgent\".\n\n\"Israeli forces have increasingly used military tactics and weapons in law enforcement operations,\" a statement from its spokesperson said in November. \"Law enforcement is governed by international human rights law, which prohibits the intentional use of lethal force except when strictly necessary to protect life.\"\n\nIbtesam Asous, the men's mother, said she had seen a change in the methods used by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October.\n\n\"They are acting just as they used to,\" she said. \"The only thing that changed is that, before, the army would shoot a guy in his leg. Young men, sitting near a fire to stay warm, were hit with a rocket.\"\n\nAnother man told the BBC it was around an hour between the army leaving the village and the air strike happening around 05:00, and that many people in the coffee shop - including him - had left in between the two events.\n\nHand of the four brothers' mother on graveside photo of one of her sons\nKhalid al-Ahmad, the paramedic from the Palestinian Red Crescent, remembers the Israeli army withdrawing from Jenin Camp in the early hours of the morning, and says it was \"almost 5am\" when he was called to the village after the strike.\n\nThe director at Jenin Hospital confirmed that the bodies had arrived there at around 05:15.\n\nCCTV footage from a nearby camera, part of which was filmed on a mobile phone by an unknown source, shows the 30 seconds immediately before the air strike, during which a car passes down the same stretch of empty road, apparently without incident. There is no time-stamp visible in the recording.\n\nA group of people - the Darweesh brothers and their relatives - can be seen standing and sitting around a fire. Then the air strike hits.\n\nSome of the brothers had been going to work, their mother said, while Hazza had been heading to an early morning dialysis appointment at Jenin Hospital.\n\nHe was worried that the military operation would block the road, she said, and wanted to leave early.\n\nThe hospital kidney unit confirmed that Hazza Darweesh had a regular 7am appointment for dialysis that day, and showed us his name on the schedule.\n\nA video taken by the brothers' uncle, Youssef Asous, shortly after the air strike shows bodies strewn across the ground.\n\nThe experienced Jenin paramedic, Khalid al-Ahmad, said he despaired of ever being able to forget the scene.\n\n\"They were kids without weapons,\" Youssef said. \"If they had weapons, I would have seen them. He can’t remember which one it was – there are so many of them now. But he says it was typical of this new trend of video: other TikTok videos, celebrity or podcaster interviews, TV show and film clips spliced together over some sad or ambient music. They’re depressing, full of existential dread and usually on the theme of disconnection and alienation. Nguyen initially thought, like other users, that these videos were a joke. They’re crudely edited and the name in itself is a sarcastic reference to the proliferation of micro-trends emerging from TikTok since 2020. But he was soon staying up late at night in his bedroom making corecore of his own.\n\n“As I was making my first video I started to really see myself expressing how I was feeling and it felt relieving because I didn’t have anyone to talk to and explaining my emotions is hard,” he tells me. “But that video felt like an exit or gateway to those feelings.” In it, clips of Lee Jung-jae, the lead in Squid Game smiling broadly and falsely at the camera, someone recounting how in school kids would ask which super power you’d want out of invisibility and flying but he says “I’m already invisible” and Jake Gyllenhall in Stronger (2017) screaming “Why do you even want me? I’m such a fuck up!” run into each other over a morose Arcade Fire track. Now Nguyen makes these videos in an attempt to help people, he says, to let them know that they’re not alone.\n\nTo date, the corecore hashtag on TikTok has 2.1bn views. Some young people consider this genre to be merely content or, worse still, content about content. But many feel it speaks to them and their experiences on a deep emotional level. “They’re my favourite type of TikTok video because they feel raw and real,” says 20-year-old Annabelle from London. “The combination of clips just somehow summarises everything that’s bad about life but I couldn’t quite tell you why.” Or as one commenter put it on a corecore video about struggling to date and the toxicity of modern relationships perpetuated by all genders: “why am i crying over this”.\n\nScreengrabs from corecore TikTok videos\n‘Explaining my emotions is hard’ … screengrabs from a corecore TikTok video using a clip from Squid Game. It was masculine and all the boys were making it,” says Eden Young, managing editor of Polyester zine and podcast co-host. “People wanted something a bit deeper and carved something more meaningful from this trend, which led to corecore.”\n\nIt’s fairly obvious why Gen Z would enjoy corecore. You can be moved by these videos without knowing the sources of the clips but if you understand the pop, cultural and internet culture references, you feel special. Like most internet humour, if you get it, you get it. “Everything feels very hopeless and corecore speaks to these frustrations and anxieties. It’s a way to laugh at how hopeless everything is – or at least get some meaning from it. You have a lightbulb moment that says: oh yeah, the world is bullshit,” says Young.\n\nAre these videos art? A new frontier in amateur documentary making? “I can’t see why they wouldn’t be art if people are capable of reading things into the juxtapositions they’re presenting,” says art critic and author, Philippa Snow. “Whether they’re ‘good’ art or not is obviously debatable on a case-by-case basis, but that’s true of absolutely every artform on Earth.” She references a quote from a TikTok user called Dean Erfani, who said that corecore is essentially the abstract concept of taking random videos and editing them together to the point that it makes sense to the viewer. Or at least have the viewer interpret it in their own way. “That does not sound all that different to me from looking for meaning in ‘the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table’ as the famous mantra of surrealism suggests.”\n\nIn my favourite corecore video, almost euphorically bleak in its composition, Ampers Anthony edits together the following: a woman talks about her last boyfriend who had a no-crying rule, a hot man appears with the caption that he texted his ex to slow down her healing process, there’s commentary on “bad boys” and “good guys”, a guy laments that he can’t manipulate his current partner, women talk about not dating broke guys. The accompanying music (Darker Than This by composer Emile Mosseri) is bright, hopeful and against this noxious film feels faintly humorous, ironic. Its top comment reads: “This needs to be seen by everyone. Somehow this video captures it all. We are a loveless generation. Photograph: Ampers Anthony @ampersanthony\nTo me, it, like the others of its kind, is a simple and accessible version of an Adam Curtis film, adopting his humour and slant, the seemingly unrelated clips with his voiceover. Young notes that the writer Mark Fisher’s ideas shine through in this genre: Fisher was anti-capitalism, spoke a lot about isolation and wondered how we can process the hopelessness in the modern world.\n\n\nWhen I watch corecore, as someone who only sporadically uses TikTok, it mimics the way using the app is an overstimulating act of binge-watching a stream of short videos and voices. This trend is a smart – and sad – comment on the proliferation of content in culture: self-focused, often narcissistic commentary, opinions, life-hacks and problem sharing – it’s everywhere. The videos make me feel despondent and sorry for a generation who grew up during the pandemic and have never in their lives logged off. Whether we enjoy them or not, they’re probably the avant garde documentaries we deserve and certainly the ones that make the most sense.\n\n… as 2023 gathers pace, and you’re joining us from Turkey, we have a small favour to ask. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faced four-and-a-half hours of questioning at a US congressional hearing on Thursday.\n\nAs one congressman pointed out, some people run marathons quicker than that.\n\nMr Chew will certainly be feeling it, after a torrid time giving evidence. Many tech execs have stood before Congress, and they often don't get an easy ride.\n\nBut what was exceptional about this hearing was the stubborn, never-ending line of vicious questioning.\n\nWho is TikTok chief Shou Zi Chew?\nHow a TikTok ban would - or wouldn't - work in practice\nTikTok ban: What could it mean for creators?\nFrom both Democrats and Republicans, there was no let-up. A spokesperson for TikTok said afterwards the politicians were \"grandstanding\". There is most certainly some truth to that. But between the sometimes frustratingly verbose questioning, we did learn a thing or two.\n\n1. Legislators were united against TikTok\nThere was criticism of TikTok from Republicans and Democrats, and the level of distrust and scepticism from all sides was stark.\n\n\"Welcome to the most bipartisan committee in Congress,\" said Republican congressman Buddy Carter.\n\n\nMedia caption,\nCommittee chair to TikTok CEO: 'We aren't buying it'\n\n\"Thank you, Mr Chew, for bringing Republicans and Democrats together,\" said Dan Crenshaw, a Republican.\n\nIt was really quite something to see so many politicians - who agree on practically nothing - agreeing wholeheartedly that TikTok was a security threat.\n\nTikTok complained afterwards that not enough time had been spent focusing on the platform's measures to keep data safe.\n\n\"Also not mentioned today by members of the committee: the livelihoods of the five million businesses on TikTok or the [US Constitution] First Amendment implications of banning a platform loved by 150 million Americans,\" a TikTok spokesperson said.\n\n2. ByteDance engineers in China have access to some US data\nMr Chew kept talking about a \"Project Texas\", a proposal which will see it store all data in the US under the watch of American firm Oracle.\n\nHowever, Project Texas is not fully operational. As of now, Mr Chew confirmed that engineers at ByteDance - TikTok's parent company - do have access to data.\n\n\"We rely on global interoperability, Chinese engineers have access to data,\" he said.\n\nIt was an admission that politicians kept coming back to. Their point was that if data can be accessed by engineers in China, it's hard to see how the Chinese government couldn't also access it.\n\nOn Friday, China's foreign ministry repeated its claim that it does not ask companies to provide data or intelligence located in other countries.\n\n3. Chew has shares in ByteDance\nPerhaps Mr Chew's least successful defence was his attempt to distance TikTok from ByteDance.\n\nBy any definition, the Chinese company owns TikTok. Mr Chew himself used to be ByteDance's chief financial officer.\n\nWhen initially asked, Mr Chew didn't want to say whether he owned shares in ByteDance. Pressed by lawmakers, he eventually said he did, but tried to downplay the connection.\n\nChina's government says it would oppose any US plan to force ByteDance to sell TikTok - something authorities are reportedly considering.\n\n4. Chew's children do not use TikTok\nAt one point in the hearing, Mr Chew was asked by congresswoman Nanette Barragán, a Democrat, whether or not his own children used TikTok.\n\nHe said they didn't because they live in Singapore.
