| body | Just about the time we start REALLY enjoying the beautiful summer-like weather in late spring, those tiny little vampires arrive--Mosquitos. Each spring, just before they arrive, Nick and I always seem to have the same conversation: "Hey, the mosquitos aren't here yet. Maybe, just maybe they won't be bad this year..." Then they show up with a vengeance. And again we wage battle, striving to find ways to minimize their impact. In an upcoming post we plan on sharing some great tips for keeping mosquitoes away, but right now we are focusing on how to deal with those painful bites--naturally. So here are just a few of the home remedies for insect bites that we have found to really help in our family... By the way, here's where I get the TerraShield spray that's in the video Plantain (by Nancy Meissner) Yesterday I was working for a very brief time in our garden. It's "bug season" here for another few weeks, so I was doing my chores as quickly as possible. However, much to my dismay, I was attacked ferociously by a number of insects. As a result I received quite a few bites on my face and neck. The itching soon became very miserable, and I ended up taking an antihistamine just to get some relief. I received temporary relief. But it didn't take long before the bites were swelling even larger. And once again I was miserable, itchy, and uncomfortable. I even woke up during the night in misery. By the morning, it had been about 18 hours since I'd gotten the bites and I was still miserable. Craig asked me, "Did you try plantain?" I had totally forgotten about the wonderful effects I'd had in the past using a simple natural remedy--the leaves of the plantain plant! What is Plantain? According to Wikipedia, plantain, is from the genus Plantago. It's a very common weed that grows all over the world including America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Europe. Plantain can be found in many different habitats--I've typically found it in lawns, driveways, and places like that. There are broad leaf plantain plants, and narrow leaf plantain plants, however I understand that both will work. You can identify plantain by the 3 - 5 parallel veins that run the length of each leaf. One article I read said that plantain is also called ribwort, pig's ear, and band-aid plant. Wikipedia states that Plantago species is an herb that has been used as an astringent, anti-toxic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine and many other uses. Making a poultice of the leaves is useful for insect bites, poison ivy rashes, minor sores, and boils. Personally I've found that it's easier to just pick the plant and squeeze the juices of the leaf right onto the bit. The sooner I do it, the better the results. So I found some Plantain... Right after Craig reminded me about plantain, I went outside to find some. Within 10 feet of our front door I found a number of small plantain plants. They're super easy to use--many people just chew them for a minute then apply this to the bug bite. I just tear the leaves, then rub my bites vigorously with the torn leaves so that the juice from the torn leaves can get on the bug bite. Some folks will make a poultice in their blender. And I read in another article this morning that you can make a plantain oil for winter use. Just place the leaves in a clean pint jar and cover them with 1 - 2 inches of olive oil. You can strain the oil off after a couple of weeks, and save the oil to use as needed. Within seconds of the time I applied the torn leaves to my bites, I received such relief! Far better than any antihistamine. The swelling went down and there was very little itching in less than an hour. It's just plain dramatic how effective this remedy is! Essential Oils (Lisa Meissner) There are a number of essential oils that people like to use. Some of the most popular are Melaleuca, Lavender, Peppermint, and I even heard of someone who recommended Clove. Melaleuca is probably our favorite and the one we turn to the most when we don't have plantain on hand. I don't usually dilute it when using it on bites, cuts, scratches, burns, and other skin issues. https://www.susprep.com/off-grid-health/home-remedies-for-insect-bites/ |

I don't usually dilute it when using it on bites, cuts, scratches, burns, and other skin issues.\n\nhttps://www.susprep.com/off-grid-health/home-remedies-for-insect-bites/",

| body | by David The Good We garden in Alaska, and the whole composting thing is a big challenge for us. Because our average temperature is so low, it literally takes years to compost material. Last year, we unfortunately had a chest freezer go bad, and it sat for a week before anyone discovered the problem. It was full of red salmon fillets and buffalo meat from what we had harvested previously. After we cried about the 250 lbs. of rotting meat, we did what a lot of coastal Alaskans have done for 100s of years. We added the meat to the garden. We garden in raised beds, so we dug out the dirt and placed the fillets (half of a red salmon each—about 2 pounds) in the bottom of the bed. The salmon was layered in the beds about 6 inches apart over the entire bottom of the beds and covered with 10 inches of dirt. We put approximately 20+ fillets (10 whole fish) in each bed. We planted potatoes, peas, and broccoli in the beds and away we went. Luckily the bears left the beds alone, and the plants prospered. We got a bumper crop of peas and broccoli, and the potatoes were the largest we have ever seen. The potatoes were the fancy purple kind and they grew 3-5 feet tall with 1-inch stalks. They gave us a surprise by producing potato berries in large bunches. These berries are like large grapes. Unfortunately, they were everywhere, and the dog ate some and proceeded to vomit toxic berries for 2 days. Lesson learned there! So rotting, stinking fish flesh worked wonderfully, and the plants did not show any over-fertilizing problems as you would think.” Oh heck yeah. When life gives you ruined meat … turn it into potatoes! Just don’t let the dog get into the solanine-rich potato fruits. In a related idea, a reader e-mailed me this: “My uncle told me a planting method for papayas in which you dig until you reach water (which, here, it only takes about 6 feet), refill the hole until there is no water showing, start a wood fire at the bottom of the hole, and fill the hole with organic matter.” Another place for composting fish, perhaps? I’ve not heard of that precise method, and it sounds like a lot of digging, but it’s not all that different from the melon pits I discuss in Compost Everything. That book also contains details on how to make fish emulsion in a barrel, just in case you don’t feel like digging. Nature composts everything … why not do the same? Composting fish really isn’t that crazy. Remember the Pilgrims and the Indians? Why have we forgotten what our ancestors knew well? Just go for it. Giant potatoes don’t lie. | body | The paper towels that are sitting on the kitchen counter, in your washroom cabinet or even at your workplace may seem to be a normal necessity in your everyday life. But do you know that those very same paper towels you're using regularly do a massive damage to you and to our environment? Watch this amazing video to help reverse the damages! http://nanotowels.waterliberty.com/special/?hop=patriotpri Here are some scary facts for you to know… To make one ton of paper towels, 17 trees have to be destroyed and over 20,000 gallons of water have to be polluted for usage. That's more than enough water to feed a community of 40,000 people per day! Everyday, over 3,000 tons of paper towel waste is produced in the US alone and to make the matter worse, decomposing paper towels produce methane gas, a leading cause of global warming! In fact, an average person uses 2,400 to 3,000 pieces of paper towels each year. At the current store sale price, you're spending over $100 per year, $400 for a family of four, on these "harmful" paper towels. What you're about to discover is an advanced technology that will end your need for paper towels FOREVER and save you thousands of dollars. This advanced technology can also eliminate your usage of toxic chemicals that you use to clean your house. All you need is WATER to clean virtually anything. Watch this video right now to learn more! http://nanotowels.waterliberty.com/special/?hop=patriotpri We hope you’ll join forces with us to make this world a better place to pass onto our future generations. Thank you, Chris Peterson Freedom Writers Publishing 1815 Central Park Dr. #358 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 Be sure to forward this message to your friends who are concerned with self-reliance and survival. |

| body | Big thanks, to Vey the founder of Prepperlytics.com for today’s Guest Post Article “How much ammo do I need to stock for SHTF?” BEANS, BULLETS, AND BANDAIDS Every prepper knows that storing up ammo is key to getting prepared, but how much do you need? How much is enough? Our analysis shows that the average prepper needs just 1,500 rounds for a battle rifle and 700 rounds for a pistol. Read the below analysis, and let us know if you agree. FOCUS ON TWO GUNS At a minimum, every prepper should own at least two guns; a pistol and a battle rifle. It’s great to have a .22 for target practice and small game, and a shotgun is perfect for bird and deer hunting. But when it comes to defending a retreat from a group of enemy combatants, everyone in your group should have a battle rifle and pistol on them. Let’s not get caught up in the debate of which caliber or firearm is best. Our group standard is 9mm for pistol and .223 for the battle rifle, so that’s what I’ll be using for the analysis. Your group standard may be different. Just adjust the analysis to fit your firearm and magazine selection. HOW MUCH AMMO CAN YOU CARRY? If you know that you’re going to head into a sustained battle, you’ll probably take an assault pack loaded with as ammo as you can carry, but the typical SHTF group is not going to be assaulting an enemy; they’re going to be repelling one. You’ll probably be on watch, or sleeping when the alert comes through on the radio that an enemy has been sighted. You’ll instinctively throw on your kit and head out the door as quickly as possible. That means the most ammo you’ll likely go through in a firefight will be no more than your typical loadout. So we’ll use a daily, post-SHTF loadout as the basis for our calculation. HOW MUCH AMMO IS ON YOUR KIT? At a minimum, you’ll want 3 rifle mags on your chest, 1 on your battle belt and 1 in your gun; so 5 rifle mags. You should also have at least 3 pistol mags on your belt and 1 in your gun. A lot of preppers like to “Double Stack” their mags so that they can carry more, but in my experience, double stacked mags slow down my reloads and make lying prone more challenging. With this setup, you’re carrying a total of 5 rifle mags and 4 pistol mags. A popular group standard is 30 round AR mags and 17 round pistol mags, plus 1 in the chamber of each. Add that up and you’re at 151 rounds of .223 and 69 rounds of 9mm available in a given firefight. HOW MANY FIREFIGHTS CAN YOU SURVIVE? If you lose your first firefight or get mortally wounded, then you really don’t need more than 151 rounds of .223 and 69 rounds of 9mm, but I’m an optimist. I’d like to think that you can make it through several firefights without a scratch. But how many firefights do you actually expect to have? If your retreat is hidden well and the perimeter is secure, you shouldn’t have to deal with that many conflicts. Let’s say that you manage to get into and survive 10 firefights, and with each fight, you completely empty all battle rifle and pistol mags on your person. Given that scenario, you’ll need 151*10 and 69*10 or 1,510 rounds for the rifle and 690 for the pistol. That’s it. Far less than the 10,000 rounds some YouTube experts claim you need. WHAT ABOUT OTHER REASONS TO BUY AMMO? There are plenty of good reasons to buy more ammo than you’ll actually use in SHTF. Having extra ammo on hand in case others run low. Stocking up for children who may need to learn how to use a firearm. Setting aside additional ammo for refugees that your group might take in after the collapse. Using ammo as a barter item or post-SHTF currency. Politicians may try to restrict ammo sales, driving up the price. Frequently training before and after the event. Hunting and predator elimination. I’m sure you can think of other reasons why buying more ammo is a good idea, but in a realistic SHTF scenario, 1,500 rounds of .223 and 700 rounds of 9mm should be plenty. If that feels a little short, go ahead and double it to 3,000 rounds of .233 and 1,500 rounds 9mm. At today’s prices that just over $1,000 to safely cover your long-term ammo needs. If you’ve got the cash, by all means, get more. Just make sure you’ve got your beans and band-aids covered before buying that 10,000th round of ammo. You’d be amazed at how many calories you’ll need to store for SHTF, and ammo is particularly tough on the teeth. The article above was kindly contributed by Vey from Prepperlytics, and the original title, “How much ammo do I need to stock for SHTF?” can be found on the Prepperlytics.com blog. |

| body | IS A GARDEN ENOUGH? One of the earliest goals you should set as a prepper is to have a year’s worth of food stored up, but what happens after you make it through the first year? Will your garden be able to sustain your group’s food needs? Let’s look at how whether a garden can produce enough calories to fully sustain a moderately sized prepper group without additional livestock. HOW MUCH FOOD DO YOU NEED? In theory, a garden can produce as little or as much food as you need it to. In reality, you have constraints, such as how much room your retreat has for a garden, how many man hours your group can spend gardening, how long your gardening season lasts, etc. The best place to start is to figure out how much food you actually need to survive. The average family of 4 consumers 4,000,000 calories a year, but that’s just 1 family. If you want a good shot at doing well in SHTF, you need to group up, and our previous analysis showed that a 26 member group is the ideal prepper group size. To make the math easy, we’ll assume the group consists of 6 families of 4 and 1 family of 2, which would come in at a whopping 26,000,000 calories a year. THE AVERAGE AMERICAN FAMILY The average American household size is 2.6 individuals, and the average American family is 3.19. Source. The average American adult male is 5’9 and 1/2 and weighs 191 lbs. He consumes just over a million calories a year. The average American adult female is 5’4″ and weighs 140.2lbs. She consumes around 800,000 calories a year. With a teenage son and daughter, the average family needs just shy of 4,000,000 calories a year. HOW MANY VEGETABLES DO YOU NEED TO GROW 26,0000,000 CALORIES? Our analysis of 22 of the most popular garden vegetables shows that each person in the group will need to consume 105 lbs of each vegetable to meet their daily calorie requirements. That’s 2,625 lbs of vegetables a year, or 7.1 lbs of vegetables a day. Have you ever tried eating 2 and 1/2 pounds of vegetables for breakfast? Me neither. It sounds like torture. BREAKFAST FOR 1 But that’s not the only bad news. A garden that can produce 76,000 lbs of food, which is how much you’ll need to hit your 26 million target for the group, needs to be 11.27 acres large. That’s larger than some prepper’s entire retreat! BOTTOM LINE A garden is a critical part of your food production come SHTF, but it can’t be your only source of food. You need a large portion of food to come from sustainable means: an orchard, vineyard, livestock, foraging, trapping, fishing, hunting and of course gardening. If you haven’t planted any fruit or nut trees, now is the time to start. Most take 3-5 years to fruit. If you don’t fencing or cages in place for livestock, now is the time to start. Livestock takes a few years to figure out how to manage properly. If you haven’t planted berry bushes, set up tree stands or learned to identify wild editable, now is the time. Forget it. You’re not living off this thing alone. Sustainable food production doesn’t come in a $50 Survival Seed lot from Amazon. It takes a lot of years of planning and doing. If you haven’t started that process, now is the time. Prepperlytics is an online website that helps preppers calculate the amount of calories that would be needed in a SHTF scenario. Vey’s site also has a number of other really useful tools that help preppers prepare. You can check out our Prepperlytics Review Here. Vey is also a Homesteader, Programmer and a Prepper. With a teenage son and daughter, the average family needs just shy of 4,000,000 calories a year.\n\nHOW MANY VEGETABLES DO YOU NEED TO GROW 26,0000,000 CALORIES?\n\nOur analysis of 22 of the most popular garden vegetables shows that each person in the group will need to consume 105 lbs of each vegetable to meet their daily calorie requirements. That’s 2,625 lbs of vegetables a year, or 7.1 lbs of vegetables a day. Have you ever tried eating 2 and 1/2 pounds of vegetables for breakfast? Me neither. It sounds like torture.\nBREAKFAST FOR 1\n\n\nBut that’s not the only bad news. A garden that can produce 76,000 lbs of food, which is how much you’ll need to hit your 26 million target for the group, needs to be 11.27 acres large. That’s larger than some prepper’s entire retreat!\nBOTTOM LINE\n\nA garden is a critical part of your food production come SHTF, but it can’t be your only source of food. You need a large portion of food to come from sustainable means: an orchard, vineyard, livestock, foraging, trapping, fishing, hunting and of course gardening.\n\nIf you haven’t planted any fruit or nut trees, now is the time to start. Most take 3-5 years to fruit. If you don’t fencing or cages in place for livestock, now is the time to start. Livestock takes a few years to figure out how to manage properly. If you haven’t planted berry bushes, set up tree stands or learned to identify wild editable, now is the time.\n\n\nForget it. You’re not living off this thing alone.\n\nSustainable food production doesn’t come in a $50 Survival Seed lot from Amazon. It takes a lot of years of planning and doing. If you haven’t started that process, now is the time.\nVey Prpeprlytics\n\nThe article above was kindly contributed by Vey from Prepperlytics, and the original title, “Can a garden produce enough food to live off of post-shtf” can be found on the Prepperlytics.com blog.\n\nPrepperlytics is an online website that helps preppers calculate the amount of calories that would be needed in a SHTF scenario. Vey’s site also has a number of other really useful tools that help preppers prepare. You can check out our Prepperlytics Review Here.\n\nVey is also a Homesteader, Programmer and a Prepper.\n\nThanks again for the article Vey.\nhttps://prepperbits.com/garden-produce-enough-shtf-calories/",

| body | Many preppers who are working towards self-reliance make sure they have a means of long-term storage of organic seeds such as carrots, cumber, cauliflower and more. If stored correctly these seeds can have a long shelf life so they can be stored for future use in an emergency. Todays Guest Post Article entitled “Every Family Should Have A Survival Seed Bank” has kindly been provided by Kathy from My Patriot Supply. Kathy gives us 10 reasons why if you haven’t already you should consider having your own survival seed bank. Every Family Should Have A Survival Seed Bank A survival seed bank is a collection of seeds that can be used in an emergency situation. The seeds are packaged in a way that allows them to be safely stored for years without going bad. This way, they are ready to plant when you need them, to produce food. Every family should have a survival seed bank and here’s why. 1. In Case Of Natural Disaster Natural disasters like floods, fires, and hurricanes can interrupt the systems and infrastructure of a location in just minutes. Although you may be used to driving on a road, in your gas-fueled car, to a neatly stocked grocery store to pick up your food supplies, this may not always be an option. Though infrastructure can break down quickly, it can take a long time and often lots of money to build back up again. Don’t be stuck without the means necessary to provide for your self. If you have a short-term food supply, as well as a seed bank, you will be set for as long as it takes to get the systems that we now rely on back into place. 2. In Case of Man-Made Disaster Man-Made catastrophes have the potential to be just as devastating, or more catastrophic than natural disasters. The weaponry that is produced in this day and age has the capacity to wipe out whole environments and cause wide-spread wreckage. It is crucial to have a seed bank so that if a disaster were to strike, you and your family could have the tools for rebuilding your life. If your land is compromised in the disaster, as it would be in the case of a nuclear attack, you may have to relocate. Seeds are small and can be transported to new land. A good survival seed bank should have seeds that can grow in a variety of climates and growing regions. 3. To Foster Self Reliance Encourage the concept of self-reliance within your family. When you have a seed bank, your family is independent. You and your family do not rely on the government or outside food agencies to take care of you. Instead, you are thinking ahead and preparing for what might occur. The more people that have this outlook, the more it will spread in our society. This will lead to a culture of self-sufficiency rather than helplessness. 4. To Share With The Community If you encounter a future where there is a food shortage, your seed bank will allow you to plant seeds, which will then grow to release new seeds. This chain reaction could enable food for an entire community, not just your own family. Viable crops can be harvested for new seeds and replanted to create an exponential amount of food. 5. For Peace Of Mind If you’ve ever spent time worrying about how your family might survive after an emergency then you should have a survival seed bank. Seeds are very inexpensive, and take up little space. If they come in proper packaging, seeds can last for up to five years at room temperature. When stored in cooler temperatures, they can last even longer. Even if nothing happens, your purchase will give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are prepared. 6. As A Back-Up Plan An economic depression could strike, and money, as we know it now, might be deemed worthless. Food will always be valuable. Be prepared for economic recessions by storing seeds, so that if worst comes to worst, you can still plant a garden and enjoy healthy meals with your family, no matter what is going on with your bank account. 7. In-Case of Crop Extinction Due To Disease Diseases among plants travel fast and can wipe out entire crops. When you save seeds, you are preserving species of plants. If a crop is wiped out, you can offer farmers a seed to start new plantings with. This way, the crop doesn’t go extinct due to one disease. There are seed banks at research institutes all over the world with many preserved plant species, but as a survivalist, it is important to have an emergency-ready mindset. What if disease strikes when there is no access to those centralized seed banks? 8. Protection Against Global Warming Global warming causes drastic temperature fluctuations and extreme weather patterns. A seed bank can help you protect your future against the uncertainty of climate change. No matter what occurs due to the weather, you will be ready to source your own food, if needed. 9. To Teach Children About Responsibility When you have a seed bank, you get to talk to your children about what it is, and what it can be used for. Teach them about the variety of plants you have stored in your bank. Vegetables, herbs, flowers, trees, and fruits all have various uses as food, resources, and medicines. Your seed bank gives you a great opportunity to give your children a lesson in horticulture. 10. To Set An Example Set an example for everyone in your life by being prepared. Many people never think ahead because they assume that they don’t have to. When you show by example that you are considering your own future and safety, others will start to ask questions about how to be prepared. The most important reason to have a survival seed bank is so that you can be prepared to grow your own food when and if disaster strikes. Even if you never use your seed bank, it will give you valuable peace of mind. Since seed banks are inexpensive and take up little space, there is no reason not to have one. | body | When the SHTF, often you must bug out if you want to survive. But the people you choose to bug out with matter. Your survival could depend on who you’re with. It’s a smart idea to build a bug out team. These are people who can contribute to the well-being of the entire group. This may not mean family members. Sometimes people feel a sense of responsibility if someone is family – even distantly related – they “owe” it to them to take them along when it’s time to bug out – or they feel obligated to watch out for their work colleagues. If you have a family member who you love, but you know the person is prone to panic and will cause chaos, trouble in the team, and likely get you killed, you have to keep in mind your first responsibility is to yourself and any young children – not adults who are old enough and physically capable enough to care for themselves. In a chaotic situation, not everyone you like is a good choice to bug out with. These might be people who didn’t bother to prepare so now they’re going to be a drain on your resources. They don’t add anything to the team effort. You don’t owe your neighbor, your work buddy or your acquaintances anything when survival is on the line. You want to avoid taking people in who will add to the chaos, who won’t help out and who feel like it’s everyone else’s job to take care of them. You want your bug out group to consist of like-minded people who are prepared. Network with other preppers. By being prepared and connected, you can not only bug out safely and efficiently, but you’ll be able to establish a solid way of life when you reach your bug out destination. Look to connect with other preppers who have something to bring to the group. You want to make sure that the other person’s personality will fit – as well as their skills. You don’t need any troublemakers – the kind of person who wants to always argue or tries to cause rifts in the group. You want people who are mature enough to work together without stirring up drama, complaining, whining, or who seem to stay in a state of constant offense against someone else. Build a group of people who have carpentry skills. Network with preppers who know the basics of starting life in a new place such as builders, plumbers, farmers, and electricians. Make sure your group has people who know how to hunt and survive in the wild – and people who understand plant life. Create your group with people who know security and self-defense. Medical personnel, teachers, and mechanics are all people who can contribute their skills to the group. By choosing the right people to bug out with, life on the go as well as once you reach your bug out destination will be a whole lot easier. | body | 7 Ways to Feed Your Garden for Free On the subject of healthy soil, we’ve posted a couple of really useful articles this week about making all those microbes happy, feeding your garden, and maximizing the nutrition in your homegrown food … for free! The video in the first article actually debuted at TGN during last year’s Home Grown Food Summit. It’s David the Good’s fun (and funny) presentation on “7 Ways to Feed Your Garden for Free.” You can watch the whole thing (46 minutes of inspiration for your spring gardening plans!) here: https://thegrownetwork.com/7-ways-feed-garden-free/ Here’s a Simple Way to Stretch Your Compost In the second article, David talks about his favorite way to make his compost work even harder for him—with compost tea. There are actually two videos in this post. In the first, David shows you how he makes and uses his anaerobic compost tea. In the second, he offers some additional specifics about his recipe. Learn to make David’s compost tea here: https://thegrownetwork.com/manure-tea-easy-way-stretch-compost/ |
