The sun had reached the tops of Tonsai Cliffs and with every minute passing, more of Tonsai Bay was flooded in a sea of gold. The longtail boat headed for Shark Point and there we chatted about the what if's...\n\nPhi Phi Shark Point\nOn entering the sea at Phi Phi Shark Point our small group of 5 stayed close and quiet as if sensing danger. Floating no more than an arms length apart we looked all around.\n\nFirst shark sighting\nPip was the first to see a 70cm black Tip Shark pup in about 1 m of water but it fled before all the group had a chance to spot it. Almost immediately a larger 1.2m Black Tip came straight towards our group but on seeing us, made a wide arc around us. This deeper seabed had changed from the flat rocky surface the smaller Black Tips enjoyed to hunt their prey to some varied coral of stag horn and boulder coral.\n\n2 large female Black tips almost 2m long glided by as if they hadn’t a care in the world. Swimming very slowly these gracious beasts moved at an amazing speed. At this time Maya Bay is the Maya Bay before tourism. Quiet and majestic, it is inspiring. Smiling to ourselves we continued by boat to the last part of the adventure and so to Loh Samah Bay. Underneath the verdant cliffs, the snorkeling at Loh Samah was colorful and varied. Minimum age 12 years old.\n\nDetailed Briefing\n•\tShark point often gets currents. The tides can be as much as 4 meters exposing rock and coral at low tides. Our tour tries to use this to our advantage. •\tThe shallows can be less than 0.5 meters, so be careful on the rocks. •\tThe shark like to roam over the broken coral as it is easier to chase their prey. The broken coral is caused by the action of the low season waves pounding the reef. •\tThe Technique. •\tTaking control. The guide must take control if a close group is to be formed. •\tGetting in. Tell the customers to stay near the boat and wait till everybody gets in. •\tIf the group is in a line it creates a wall that the shark won't pass. Sharks won't pass underneath snorkelers. By staying in a close group the inquisitive shark will swim around the group. See map •\tTo stay in a group needs group awareness. Explain that while looking around they must some how be no more than 2-3 meters from 2 other people to maintain a close cluster. •\tOnce the group is up tide it should stop, form a close group and float down stream or down tide. •\tStaying close using minimal swimming, splashing or talking, optimizes the chance to see the shark. • The Route. There are many routes but new guides should practice the basic route before moving on to the variations. See map\n\nWet suit\nThey help by •\tExtra buoyancy of the wetsuit makes it easier to swim. •\tHelps protect the body in the shallower areas against rock and coral •\tIf there are jelly fish in the water it helps stop their irritating sting.\n\nAbout black Tip Reef Sharks\nThe Black Tip Shark is found all over the world. The 10 sub species are found as far apart as the Caribbean the Great Barrier Reef and since the Suez canal opened at the turn of the last century in the Mediterranean as far as Libya. The 10 sub species have varying traits and are known to nip snorkeler's ankles in the Caribbean.\n\nThe Black Tips of the Andaman Sea are timid and shy away from human contact, though are inquisitive if they think they are in no danger. They skim the broken reef looking for parrot fish, mullet and squid at sunrise and at sunset. Up to 2 meters, this shark is impressive. The larger ones hang off the reef and rocks in the deeper water. The smaller ones can be found in less than 0.5 meters of water. Females are generally fatter than the male. Females give birth from 2 -8 pups in September to November.
