      "body": "For the past two years, we at Kathmandu Living Labs have been building community around OpenStreetMap, which is a free wiki map of the world.\n\nOne of the major reasons for building this community was that, we believed having a great map that is made by the locals themselves is a great help in building disaster resilience. We had mapped Kathmandu in great detail even before the earthquake struck, including all the school and health facilities in Kathmandu Valley along with their structural data and made it freely available to everyone in OpenStreetMap. We had started to expand our work to other cities like Bharatpur and Hetauda and also VDC’s like Bajrabarahi, Manahari, and Padampur. We went to these places and involved the local community in the mapping process. Farmers, students, and teachers in these villages mapped out their communities in great detail on the OpenStreetMap platform, including a Kiwi farmer in Bajrabarahi who single-handedly mapped all the kiwi farms in the village.\nhttps://i2.wp.com/nepaliblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/osmkathmandu.png?resize=696%2C357&ssl=1\nOne of the reasons we had been building this map was to be prepared for the earthquake that was long predicted in Kathmandu. When the earthquake actually happened on 25th April, the International community stepped in to speed up our work in a big way! Almost 5000 national and international volunteers come together to help remotely map Nepal. On the other side, organizations ranging from International organizations like the Canadian Military, UN OCHA, World Food Programme and national organizations like the Survey Department and the Nepal Army have used the data from OpenStreetMap. Many of these are downloaded from http://quakerelief.info while others are using the data from OpenStreetMap to create their own maps. OpenStreetMap has become a default map from this crisis, and we are incredibly thankful to all of the volunteers that have contributed to the map.\nhttps://i1.wp.com/nepaliblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/quakemap.png?resize=696%2C397&ssl=1\nThe day after the earthquake struck, we also launched the QuakeMap.org platform platform where people can submit reports for earthquake related needs. 1800 reports have come into the system, which aggregates needs related to food, medicine, shelter, and sometimes even evacuations. We have a team of volunteers who then verifies many of those needs, and routes them to appropriate responding organizations. Responding organizations can, and do subscribe to alerts for new reports that come into the system. Many also ask us for spreadsheets aggregating certain categories of needs in certain areas that we are also able to provide organizations with. At the moment, our team of volunteers are focusing on which of the reported needs have been sufficiently addresses, and which of them haven’t, alerting appropriate organizations whenever unmet need is encountered. Our aim is to mark as many reports as possible as “action taken.”\n\nOur work has been covered by national and international media like the New York Times, Wired, BBC, Nepali Times, Kantipur Television, and many more.",

      "body": "Parkmandu is an initiative that is transforming Kathmandu’s urban spaces and making them livable and enjoyable for everyone. Our collective initiative is working with local communities to build and rebuild parks and other open spaces in order to improve the way people live their neighbourhoods in the city.\n\nKathmandu’s urban development has been going under crucial transformation for the last decades. This transformation has left aside public policies for open spaces and as a consequence, less than 1% of the city is a public territory and there is a substantial pollution rate and absence of greenery.\n\nThese circumstances are warning signals to understand why Kathmandu needs to start rethinking its urban planning in order to give citizens a good quality of life and valuable public areas to live.\n\nParkmandu goes further than just building parks. This project wants to engage communities to improve their environments and living conditions through participatory design. This type of design intends to encourage people to be proactive in society and to work for their cities.\n\nAll Parkmandu’s projects are owned by local communities who find the resources and put their effort for the creation of the parks.\n\nThis is a very recent but courageous enterprise that started in November 2016. In only four months of hard working and spreading the word, Parkmandu has started three community designs and two park constructions.\n\nOur second park construction is under work and it is intended to be the first public space with entire accessibility for everyone. To fulfil the purpose, Parkmandu has launched a Crowdfunding Campaign.       "body": "https://i2.wp.com/nepaliblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/Gurkha-Trending-Facebook-False-Story-Nepali-Blogger.jpg?resize=1068%2C534&ssl=1\nThe good news is that people are talking and sharing stories about Gurkha on Facebook.\n\nThe not so great news, however, is that the Facebook’s algorithm is promoting an old news story of Gurkhas from an unauthentic click-bait website.\n\nFacebook’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered trending feature has been in several news stories recently for its flaws of highlighting false stories.\n\nThe Trending feature became controversial after Facebook recently fired its journalist team that had been curating and editing the trending topics and the main stories.\n\nFacebook instead is now using AI and its technical staff to maintain the topics and stories in the trending feature.\n\nI am not a super user of the Facebook’s trending feature, but it’s hard to ignore the trending topic when it’s something related to Nepal.\nGurkha – Facebook Trending Topic\n\nFacebook’s trending feature records more than thirty-five thousand people talking about Gurkhas in last 15 hours.\n\nThe highlighted news story for Gurkha reports deployment of Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) to Kabul, Afghanistan in protecting the Nato military.\n\nhttps://i1.wp.com/nepaliblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/Gurkha-Story-from-unauthentic-source-trending.jpeg?resize=696%2C370&ssl=1\n\nHaving not heard of the news from any other prominent media sources, the story looked downright suspicious. I further checked Google news to see if any other media publishers had reported the story.\n\nFurther research of the related stories revealed that the news had been copied from the army-technology.com website that was published back in 12th February 2016.",
