We were staying at Zhangjajie National Park. In our hotel, a lovely home stay, there was a giant TV on one of the walls. Children would gather arround it to watch their favorite shows.       "body": "**Apple and Samsung have a substantial market share in the Chinese smartphone market. Oppo, and to a lesser extent Vivo, are rapidly claiming a place in the smartphone landscape. While one can find an Oppo shop on every corner, you have to work hard to find the official Apple and Samsung shops.**\n\n![picture of Oppo shop](http://www.denieuwebelegger.nl/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/20170403_163030-800x445.jpg)\n\nEven in a small city like Suzhou you stumble across  Oppo shops. They just look like an Apple store. Because of the small size, there is usually only one table with the Oppo flagship R9. Playing arround with an R9 is no problem. I immediately got one in my hands. And, to be honest, they are cool for a not too high price.\n\nFor one of the Oppo shops in Suzhou, situated in a large shopping street, it was very busy because of one of the many promotion activities. In Chinese shopping streets one could loose his hearings because of an overkill of advertising messages that are blown into the streets via huge sound systems. Oppo does not do that in Suzhou at least. Curiosity is aroused by the jovial distribution of promotional material. With no noise and not that many fuzz.\n\n### Offline\nOppo strategy to be visuable on the offline market is of course a smart strategy. The direct contact with the customer works. I was amazed that I had, within ten seconds, an R9 printed in my knobs after I entered the store. Without electronic security or anything else that could stand in the way of my test experience. \n\nBut there is another reason why Oppo's strategy is paying off. By being physically present in the streets, the brand appeals to a much larger target group than just young people. For example, many older Chinese people are not familiar with the Internet, but still want a smartphone. They buy it in the shop and that also applies to the many illiterates in the country. As a result, villagers in the Zhangjiajie area can easily purchase an Oppo, because there too I saw an Oppo shop in one of the villages around the famous nature park. \n\n### Sleepless nights\nWill Apple and Samsung have sleepless nights because of the competition of Oppo and Vivo? Probably not yet. The impact of the big brands is still there, and the richer Chinese still want to distinguish themselves with something from abroad. But the Chinese brands do have a home market that is infinitely large. And imagine how overjoyed the authorities are with the rise of the Chinese brands. In addition, a device like the R9 Plus has specs that can easely be conpared with the specs from flagships in the high end market. In spite of that, The R9 Plus costs about 450 euros. An iPhone or a Galaxy with similar specs costs almost double.\n\nThe rise of Oppo should not worry the West, but there are lessons to be learned. China is still the land of the copycats for many. But gradually the point has been reached that the copies are better than the originals. The time when Western companies could win the Chinese consumer without any significant effort seems to be coming to an end. Consumers are not only more self-aware, but patriotism is also beginning to rise. Moreover, the domestic market is growing fast. It is almost impossible for Western companies to keep up with that. Doing nothing and wait will mean they’re loosing the battle.",

These terms are flying our heads. And there is a whole lot of criteria that companies have to meet if they want to be listed as sustainable or socially involved.\n\nJessica Ground, ESG specialist at Schroders, recently wrote about it. \"Looking at ESG (Environmental, social and corporate governance) is inevitable, a must\", she wrote in her outlook for 2018. Of course, Schroders mainly concerns environmental and governance aspects, but Ground also explicitly talks about social aspects and if we look into that, then the question arises whether Facebook is still such a neat investment.\n\nBecause social media is no longer as innocent as we’re supposed to believe. Facebook is, perhaps unwillingly, the biggest distributor of fake news. In addition, it has become a stage where people without any form of censorship can call each other for everything that is beautiful and ugly. And for some people; the more distasteful the contribution, the more likes one gets. Facebook says to do everything, but beyond the removal of innocent naked breasts, the inspectors of the concern are not making any progress to stop humiliation, racism and even sexism.\n\n### Dissatisfied people\n\nThe stage that Facebook offers to all the dissatisfied people in the world creates high and often unnecessary social tensions. In addition, it has become the place to permanently damage people, especially young people, digitally. It might be worse: it is also the place where people digitally nail themselves to the pillory by making statements that, perhaps two seconds after they have pressed the button ‘send’, they are extremely sorry for.\n\nInvestors who praise the fact that they have thrown out all kinds of companies and sectors from their portfolio because they would not be neat, should also look at the effects that Facebook has on society. People become addicted to it or become depressed. Facebook uses every possible means to strengthen those feelings. In an article for Bloomberg, Timothy Lavin and Michael Newman describe very adequate the status in which Facebook currently is.\n\n> Armed with fixed troves or data, companies have deduced clever ways to keep users on their sites. They have developed powerful tools - push notifications, \"like\" buttons, auto-play videos, and so on - that exploit quirks in human psychology to create something close to addiction. Add all this up and uncomfortable truth emerges: People are being drawn inexorably to a product that makes them feel terrible.\n\nSo: it is all going very well with Facebook. Since the IPO the share has gained more than 300%. But that profit gets a bad taste when you look at how the company functions in society. Investors should be aware of that. In the meantime, it would adorn Facebook if in 2018 they really start working on the things they say they would like to do better in near future. In other words: the future is now!",
