However, while the technology which underlies the digital currencies is evolving faster into the mainstream, there seems to be a holdback on the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency as a unit of exchange. It is one of the reasons for the digital currency not taking off as anticipated is regulations.*\n\n**Money laundering case in NY**\n\nOn April 24, 2019, the first culprits of money laundering facilitated by cryptocurrency were convicted in New York State, US. On the charge, attorneys said that Mark Sanchez and Callaway Crain exploited a loophole in Western Union payments to launder $2.8 million in Bitcoin.\n\nIn particular, the culprits used the dark side of cryptocurrency to sell Viagra, steroids, Valium, and Xanax. The pair owned and operated a website called NextDayGear on the dark web. Most of the merchandise was purchased in China and then advertised and sold under different names. An important segment of their market was drug dealers, doctors, and athletes.\n\nWithin five years since 2013, the culprits moved over 10,000 packages and generated around $2.8 million while getting approximately $32,000 in shipping costs. Specifically, the pair insisted that their customers paid in Bitcoin since the currency could help the trail of the transaction disappear. The District Attorney on the case expects the culprits to serve between 2.5 and 7.5 years behind bars.\n\n**Fraudulent tools**\n\nIt is a critical situation where Bitcoin helped a crime. A service which enabled the laundering activities is called a mixer. It is an underground website which allows mixing transactions in digital currencies. Such services help frauds to hide the origin or destination of digital currencies in a fraudulent transaction. One such service was closed down in late May 2019 after having “mixed” over $200 million in cryptocurrency.\n\n**Collision which authorities**\n\nAbetting fraudulent transactions is a major sticking point in the discussion concerning regulatory clarity for cryptocurrency. In particular, many regulators across the globe site the lack of comprehensive security mechanisms surrounding the ecosystem as a hindrance to the goal. Various regulators cite cases like that of the convicted drug peddlers in New York and the presence of platforms which mix crypto as a pointer toward the inherent danger of crypto.\n\nImportant stakeholders in the global financial industry are dragging their feet when it comes to defining a clear regulatory environment for the crypto ecosystem. However, there seems to be a varied approach to this issue. For instance, the Supreme Court of India is on the spot for dragging its verdict on whether the country should allow the crypto industry to thrive.\n\n**US SEC intentions**\n \nOn the other hand, the US SEC is seemingly yielding to pressure and could offer a groundbreaking directive on the issue. In particular, the regulator posted a job listing between March 29 and April 15, 2019, in which it was looking to hire a crypto specialist. It is an indication that the SEC would like to understand the sector for possible regulatory consideration better.\n\n*World governments can no longer ignore Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, it is a technology that is here to say.       "body": "![Untitled design-19.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTCLYJo41Tonz951az1ujxWF96GqpNCYYfu6SymxUTWUZ/Untitled%20design-19.png)\n\n**Japanese bar is to adopt Bitcoin Lightning Network**\n\nNayuta, the developer behind Bitcoin’s Lightning network protocol is making efforts aimed at spreading the adoption of the cryptocurrency, and the latest efforts will facilitate payments in a Japanese bank.\n\nNayuka, which is based in Japan, will collaborate with a Chinese bar  Awabar Fukouka on a test run through which they will roll out the payment system called “field test.” The Lightning network was designed with Bitcoin scaling in mind, and it is thus believed to be the best way of facilitating the mass adoption of the cryptocurrency.\n\n**Using Bitcoin to pay for drinks**\n\nAlthough the partnership between the bar and Nayuka is currently a trial run, it means that frequent bar visitors will be able to use Bitcoin to pay for drinks at the Japanese bar. If the test run is successful, then it might be rolled over in more retail outlets, thus facilitating more transactions through Bitcoin.\n\nThe Lightning network is still in its experimental stage, and the developer wants to use the Japanese bar scenario to identify how it will perform in the real world. Nayuka expects the test run to provide a chance to learn and make the necessary improvements that will facilitate more efficient performance in the future.\n\nThe Japanese bar noted that it would play a tiny part in the experiment compared to what Nayuta has set out to accomplish. However, it was pleased to be part of the project, which has the potential to change the global financial landscape. The bar owners described the partnership with Nayuka as an opportunity to spread awareness about the Lightning network.\n\nThe bar owners stated:\n>We hope it helps familiarize the community with the Lightning Network payment system\n\n\nNayuta’s partnership with the Japanese bar is the latest in a string of partnerships that are aimed at coming up with solutions that will enhance cryptocurrency adoption. A similar project focused on the rollout of the USDT stable coin powered by the Lightning network was announced at the end of May. \n\n**Push to bring crypto into the mainstream**\n\nDevelopers in the blockchain and cryptocurrency sector have been pushing for cryptocurrency adoption for a long time, but there have been some barriers standing in the way. Unfortunately, most of the people that have accepted cryptocurrencies use them as speculative investments rather than an exchange of value. It has contributed to massive volatility in the cryptocurrency market and subsequently made it difficult to use cryptocurrencies for retail payments due to their unstable prices.  It, of course, is what attracts traders, as volatility provides a huge profit opportunity.\n\nNayuta did not explain how exactly it plans to overcome these issues. The market for cryptocurrency is now worth $209 billion worldwide, almost a decade after it was first introduced.*\n\nThe cryptocurrency market has been widely successful since its introduction. People are now widely aware of cryptocurrencies and their different types. However, the adoption of crypto has been mainly restricted to a small segment of people worldwide.  According to Bloomberg, around a thousand users currently own an estimated amount of 40 percent of the Bitcoin currency that is in circulation right now. There is still a long way to go before cryptocurrency will be adopted by the masses, and we are currently facing various obstacles in the way to adoption.\n\n**Obstacles to Mass Adoption**\n\n - Lack of government regulation\n\nOne major obstacle is the regulation has yet to be imposed upon cryptocurrencies. Governments are still trying to figure out a way to regulate the workings of cryptocurrencies. Right now, anyone can set up their cryptocurrency, and they will not have to face any consequences if they are not able to accomplish their plans. It has not helped to increase investors’ confidence in the cryptocurrency market and is hindering many potential investors from entering it.\n\n - Volatility\n\nAnother obstacle is the price volatility of cryptocurrencies. A change of 10 to 20 percent daily is pretty common among most cryptocurrencies. This volatility could pose various risks if people started to carry out their everyday transactions using cryptocurrencies.\n\n- Security\n\nSecurity issues surrounding crypto is another big barrier in the way of mass adoption. There are now organized hackers and scammers who can attack and steal easily. Over $1 billion worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen the past year. The lack of security is impeding the adoption of cryptocurrencies by the general public.\n\n- Lack of education on crypto\n\nPeople also have a hard time understanding cryptocurrencies and how they work. There is a widespread misconception that crypto is chiefly used by criminals so that they can launder money. The public needs more education on this topic, and they need to think about carrying out their daily transactions in a different way if they are to adopt cryptocurrency.\n\n**Path to Mass Adoption**\n\nSuch conglomerates as Facebook and Samsung are helping in the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. These companies are creating and introducing their versions of crypto. It means that the blockchain technology is being integrated into these companies’ payment systems and digital wallets. \n\nFor example, if the companies owned by Facebook i.e., WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram start using cryptocurrency for all the payment purposes, it is going to cause a massive adoption of cryptocurrencies by the public.\n\nPeer-to-peer trade is perhaps the greatest reason for Bitcoin adoption. The fact that buyers and sellers can carry out their business directly with each other without the need for a third-party is a major catalyst for the mass adoption of Bitcoin. However, there were doubts about the nature of interactions on a blockchain platform since there was no privacy, which is something that shipping companies value. However, the platform is getting new high profile members, a proof to the robustness of the solution. Recently MSC, CMA CGM have boarded IBM-Maersk's shipping blockchain platform.*\n\n**The breach of traditional business model**\n\nThe shipping industry can be credited as the first genuinely global industry which has existed for centuries. Shipping remains a crucial part of global trade today. Notably, this sector was worth $12 trillion in 2017. In 1980, shipping companies ferried just 102 million metric tons of goods, which grew to 1.83 billion metric tons in 2017, according to Statista. The increase in tonnage is majorly attributed to the vessels increasing their capacity, as well as consumer demand.\n\nWhile the increase of tonnage and value of goods shipped have been growing, operations within the industry have remained mostly unchanged for the period. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), there is a need for effective integration of the shipping industry into the world economy, and this is only possible if port systems are functioning correctly. That is why the institution came up with the UNCTAD Port Management Program to strengthen this function.\n\n**Digitization through blockchain**\n\nUNCTAD recognizes that digitization of the shipping industry is crucial to the integration. In this regard, IBM and Maersk came together to establish TradeLens, a blockchain platform that automates operations in the shipping industry. The benefits of blockchain technology give a platform for shipping lines the opportunity to interact directly without intermediaries. Also, the data which shipping lines share over the platform is accessible to all accredited users and is immutable.\n\nIn particular, TradeLens has three components. The blockchain component enables companies to track goods along the supply chain while the API component enables organizations to create applications on top of the TradeLens platform. The third component is a set of standards which governs the sharing data among users.\n\nHowever, the platform initially faced challenges as rival companies felt unprotected in their strategy since all users had access to data on the platform. IBM and Maersk have since taken necessary measures to ensure that data is accessible only to permission parties. As such, more companies are seeing the need to take advantage of the potential of TradeLens.\n\n**Newly added members**\n\nMSC Mediterranean and CMA CGM are the latest major shipping lines to join the TradeLens community. Added them to the existing members, the TradeLens consortium now accounts for approximately half of the cargo container shipments transported among the world’s ports.\n\nThe primary attraction of the platform is the avoidance of the traditional paper-intensive process of handling shipments. The underlying blockchain technology ensures that data is safe and visible to permitted participants. Also, the data flow in real-time, which makes auditing faster and more efficient. The use of blockchain technology will eliminate the need of the third parties for verification of identities and transactions. Governments can shift the business licenses, vehicle registrations, property titles, and other vital records to the blockchain.\n\n**Regulatory compliance**\n\nBlockchain can reduce the cost, time, and risk of enforcing regulatory compliance in a country. Many countries in the US are focusing on blockchain technology and have ranked regulatory compliance on the top in terms of blockchain benefits.
