      "body": "A few months ago i found myself having a spare SSD as i sold my loyal Macbook Pro 2013 ( yes i do miss the keyboard very much) So what can i do with this spare drive that's useful ?  First off I decided to house the SSD in a caddy and use it to cold store documents, a great solution for a lot of people but I wanted to make full use of this SSD drive.\n\nAfter a few weeks of deliberating what to do i started to experiment setting up a virtual machine on the external drive using VMWare then lightly tested to see how it coped. Quite surprisingly it coped quite well with all operating systems ranging from Windows 10, Ubuntu, Kbuntu, Manjaro, OpenBSD all running with a small but healthy 6gb RAM and 2 CPU cores.\n\n![Screenshot 2021-04-02 at 17.10.59.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQp7zPCyyoKCcdxC3fsuH296aVUfbcZTAEabnK8h33ViB/Screenshot%202021-04-02%20at%2017.10.59.png)\n\n\nI must point out that this SSD was a refurb and died while being in my laptop however it was resurrected somehow using DiskUtility but could not be trusted like before with important documents the whole reason for it being \"repurposed\"  in a portable caddy.\n\nAbout 4 months into the experiment i was running Windows 10 as a virtual machine and started to see some issues with the screen freezing while using VSCode this resulted in the SSD loosing power almost immediately? - i feared the worse..\nI unplugged the SSD caddy from my Macbook Pro and plugged it strait into the Windows PC with hopes i would see the blue power light to my surprise i did for about 8 seconds before it went out for good RIP.\n\nA week went by and i was missing the whole freedom of having multiple operating systems at my disposal, so i decided to buy a new external Crucial x8 1Tb SSD, this drive is crazy fast when connected via the native USB C and has enough storage for all the operating systems i want with the added advantage of being smaller than the first SSD.\n\n![IMG_20210402_170541.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaew1SuSqBZGHDCCLGhpPLae2ge5HxDMzmk7KQcM7z5Zr/IMG_20210402_170541.jpg)\n\n\nWhat operating systems do i need ? There are many OS out there to choose from, the most popular and widely available are Linux and Windows.\nIf you are using a Macbook you can have the best of all known operating systems, however it proves a little difficult to create a MACOS operating system on a virtual machine, not that it's impossible of course.\nMy current setup is \n\nWindows 10 - For making windows applications using Visual Code and test environment for installers.\nSystem76 PoP! - For experimenting with Terminal and VI editor also used to write BASH scripts within a secure environment.\nI will be including more operating systems to the playground over time and no doubt write about my findings.       "body": "Hi there ! \n\nSo while the latest Macbook Pro and Air and the vanilla Macbook are better than that of a laptop made seven years ago there are a number of reasons why a lot of people have not upgraded. One main factor for a lot of people not upgrading is the current price of these new laptops can be extremely expensive and even Macbook's that are a couple of years old can still fetch a hefty sum of cash. \n\n![APPLE.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd6cBzhF3YKyqdVYtPEVNmtvgXddRhukXYoeqEnTaaxyP/APPLE.jpg)\n\nThe solution for many is to upgrade their existing Macbook and this can only be done with models before 2012, since Apple decided to make soldered components on their newer machines removing the ability for you to upgrade. So to give some extra life into your Macbook you can upgrade the 2012 Macbook Pro and older with the following :\n\n1. New SSD HDD ! - This is one upgrade that will transform your Macbook with noticeable results making it boot faster and deal with large files and programs with ease, i would say the best upgrade by far. The old Macbook has a mechanical hard drive that has to work hard to find your data and is a lot slower than the new SSD drives that you can pick up for a reasonable price.\n\n![HDD VS.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmV7sNnK6fQ7fQaXUHjMQDAzJukeKAfoW2PxLfbmTiVd9j/HDD%20VS.jpg)\n\n2. Dual HDD - For a lot of people the DVD/CD drive has become redundant as a lot of their media can now be access via the internet so its a good job you can easily remove your DVD/CD drive and replace it with an SSD HDD drive! RAM - The Macbook Pro originally came with a small 4gb module or RAM that back then i guess was enough for many people to plod along with their daily tasks. There was also an option where you could opt for the 8gb RAM option when buying the laptop from new that incurred an added expense but was definitely worth it in the long run. Going forward many people were wondering can we get more RAM into this old machine and so it transpires YES you can ! This may be a sign of Apple cutting updates at some point in the future for the 2012 machine but that would be expected as this would usually force an owner to upgrade to a newer machine.
