      "body": "Recently, I volunteered to be the photographer for a joint tour that my residence and another undertook, although “tour” is a major overstatement. It was more of a short picnic, and the primary reason for people going was because there would be free alcohol available on the train. That might sound untrue, but sure enough, we had an entire carriage to ourselves with security guards and everything, and things soon started to go out of hand.\n\nThat is, however, not the topic of this article. I want to write and talk about a major revelation that I had on this trip, while taking photos and me being the only sober person on board. As an amateur photographer that had been out of the hobby for nearly six months due to academic reasons, when I took my first few photos of the day I was shocked to see how terrible my photos had become. Overexposed and blurry photos was the subject of my day, and I was terribly sad to see how I had regressed.\nDuring the day, I took as many photos in as many different circumstances as possible to try and recapture my old abilities in photographing (which were minor, to say the least), and almost every single one was overexposed. The reason? Shutter speed.\n\nI was so misguided as to completely underestimate the ration in which shutter speed decreased or increased exposure, and because it was rather gloomy in the train, as soon as we came back into sunlight my shutter speed was far too slow to take acceptable pictures. The result? A myriad of pictures that would give you a migraine of you looked at them too long.\n\n![Image of Russell 1](https://i.imgur.com/1GhT390.jpg)\n\n![Image of Russell 2](https://i.imgur.com/IKz6r2Y.jpg)\n\nDuring the day I took these photos of my friend, and only after seeing these photos on my laptop did I realise what difference shutter speed, ISO and the timing of the photo makes in the story told by the images. Even though these two photos are quite bright and overexposed, you can still feel the humour in the situation the guy finds himself in.\n\nOn this journey I also discovered how much fun it is to take photos of people. Previously, I only took photos of plants and landscapes, but people photography grabbed my attention as if by force, and I must admit I am hooked. Taking photos of people that do not know that they are being photographed and then showing it to them; the reactions that I get to such photos is amazing: Sometimes people would squeal and ask me to remove the photo, but some of my best photos of people (which doesn’t say much, considering what I mentioned earlier) was taken on that day.\n\nSee this semi-action photo of another friend of mine.       "body": "<html>\n<p>During the early years of the South African border war, the South African Airforce (SAAF) called upon engineers in the country for help. The reason? Several early-stage prototype aeroplanes, which drew on a revolutionary design (at that time, early 1970’s) for the shape of the wings and fuselage of the plane to minimise radar presence of planes, turned out as failures after their wings were torn from the fuselage during flight tests. The technology had been in development by the USA since 1958, and South Africa only recently discovered how to apply this to their own planes.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/keNODvx.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"549\"/></p>\n<p>South Africa's first stealth plane. Funding had already been cut nearly in half, and the engineer in charge of the project, Flip du Preez, was getting desperate for a breakthrough. It came soon after, in a form that would surprise everyone in the Aerospace industry. An aspiring young aeronautical engineer, who had just completed his third year of studies at the University of Stellenbosch, developed a controversial method of securing the wings to the fuselage, which in turn greatly boosted the performance and reliability of planes developed by the SAAF. This young engineer went by the name of Jan van der Merwe, and he would soon make history in the Aerospace Industry. Jan heard about the dilemma faced by the SAAF, and he started doing research in his free time to find a solution.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>One day, only a few weeks after starting his research, he came upon the discovery that would change the world forever. According to his son, who is now head of the Aeronautical Society of South Africa, Jan was busy in his father’s garage one weekend, building test models from paper when he came upon the discovery. He immediately rushed to the SAAF’s Research branch in Stellenbosch, passing the knowledge to them and so changing the course of the war. What he discovered was this: He realised that, if you made a row of small holes in the wing, just where it used to tear, the forces created by air pressure during flight would be sufficiently redirected to other parts of the wing, preventing the wings from tearing from the fuselage as it usually did. Incredulous, this idea was put to the test, and sure enough, the test plane performed incredibly, passing all expectations with flying colours. Further simulations were ran, and only months later the first South African spy plane took to the skies above Namibia, performing so well that it was never even once detected by radar or lookouts during the rest of the entire war. Consequently, almost no records of its existence is available, and only a select few individuals, most of whom have long since passed away, know of its existence. After said plane was constructed, Flip du Preez was greatly interested in how the young man had come upon this discovery, and so he approached him with the question.       "body": "<html>\n<h1>&nbsp;Why and when Flowers?</h1>\n<p>Every person as a certain “genre” of image that they enjoy, be it nature, people, food, events, what have you. It might be because they have an attraction to the things depicted by the images, or it might simply be because they like the look of the pictures. When I got my first camera, I was hooked. Naturally, I was pretty into it before having my own camera, but then I got one of those Canon point and click camera’s and I was gone, drawn into this hobby entirely. In the years since, I have upgraded to a much better but far from the best Nikon D40, a camera which my father spotted for sale second hand at an astonishingly good price, because the seller had to get rid of it. And so, I acquired my first DSLR. And what a day it was. I always used to take photos with my father’s D70, and man did I enjoy that, but now I had my own camera and I could take it wherever I went! As an added bonus, most of the lenses my father owned worked just fined with my camera, so I didn’t need to spend any extra!&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The day I got my camera I went out into our garden and started photographing anything and everything I could find.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/PTd3KRp.jpg\" width=\"2602\" height=\"2000\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/1DpGzm1.jpg\" width=\"3008\" height=\"2000\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/dO04deu.jpg\" width=\"2814\" height=\"1709\"/></p>\n<p>&nbsp;My father had an extra copy of Adobe Lightroom (in the time before they became a subscription service) and I installed that on my pc, and spent hours just going through all my photos, and editing and brightening them up. Soon after, though, I got bored with the garden, and I went to take a walk outside of town, in the veld that is the Klein-Karoo. And boy did I find some beautiful flowers. Check them out below. Only days later, early one morning, my mother drove me to a place outside of town where she said she spotted some pretty flowers, and I might get a good photo with the dew drops on them. So I went an took these photos.       "body": "<html>\n<h1>&nbsp;Why and when Flowers?</h1>\n<p>Every person as a certain “genre” of image that they enjoy, be it nature, people, food, events, what have you. It might be because they have an attraction to the things depicted by the images, or it might simply be because they like the look of the pictures. When I got my first camera, I was hooked. Naturally, I was pretty into it before having my own camera, but then I got one of those Canon point and click camera’s and I was gone, drawn into this hobby entirely. In the years since, I have upgraded to a much better but far from the best Nikon D40, a camera which my father spotted for sale second hand at an astonishingly good price, because the seller had to get rid of it. And so, I acquired my first DSLR. And what a day it was. I always used to take photos with my father’s D70, and man did I enjoy that, but now I had my own camera and I could take it wherever I went! As an added bonus, most of the lenses my father owned worked just fined with my camera, so I didn’t need to spend any extra!&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The day I got my camera I went out into our garden and started photographing anything and everything I could find.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/PTd3KRp.jpg\" width=\"2602\" height=\"2000\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/1DpGzm1.jpg\" width=\"3008\" height=\"2000\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgur.com/dO04deu.jpg\" width=\"2814\" height=\"1709\"/></p>\n<p>&nbsp;My father had an extra copy of Adobe Lightroom (in the time before they became a subscription service) and I installed that on my pc, and spent hours just going through all my photos, and editing and brightening them up. Soon after, though, I got bored with the garden, and I went to take a walk outside of town, in the veld that is the Klein-Karoo. And boy did I find some beautiful flowers. Check them out below. Only days later, early one morning, my mother drove me to a place outside of town where she said she spotted some pretty flowers, and I might get a good photo with the dew drops on them. So I went an took these photos.       "body": "Dude if I could travel at the speed of light, I'd literally... I was going to say visit other planets but I just remembered that you also said in your post some of the closer star systems are a few thousand/billion light years away. And spacesuits are expensive... But moving at that speed would be kinda fun. I'd be able to go home in between classes (home is around 3.5hrs from where I study) so it would be a pretty neat ability.\nKeep making more of these science/physics based posts though.",
