titleEthereum and Smart Contracts FAQ
bodyAfter browsing crypto-related forums for a while, I found that many people have misconceptions and doubts about smart contracts and solidity. This article is a way to answer those questions in a clear language, which I hope can help to demystify the topic. This article will be improved over time, as new questions come up, as the technology develops, and as I learn more about. ## What's the difference between Tokens and Coins? Coins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) have their own blockchain and a proof-of-work algorithm that the only way to create new coins is by spending computing power (mining) to solve new blocks and receive coins as a reward. Tokens are an abstraction defined in a smart contract. It runs on top of a blockchain and cannot be mined. In Ethereum, to be called a Token, the smart contract must follow the ERC20 standard, which defines a set of common functions to interact with the contract, such as checking balances and transferring tokens. ## Can tokens be transferred to a wallet? No. Tokens live on the smart contract that defines the token. Ownership of a token is stored at the smart contract, in the event the contract is destroyed, there will be no reference of tokens and who owns them anymore. ## Can Ether be converted to Tokens? Sometimes. Some ICO contracts have a defined ratio so investors sending money to the contract will receive an equivalent in token. Another way to convert Ether to Tokens is using an exchange. ## Can tokens be mined? No. There's no proof-of-work for tokens. Ethereum PoW does not affect the generation of tokens. In the other hand, tokens can be minted, when implemented in the smart contract. ## Can tokens be stolen or hacked? Yes. Smart contract is code and it can have bugs. Some bugs can allow hackers to transfer all funds to themselves. It's very important that contracts are well tested and audited by experienced blockchain developers. ## How smart contracts are tested? Contracts can be deployed to a local blockchain for local testing. The main tool to automate this process is called Truffle and Ganache. To test with users, contracts can be deployed to test-nets like Ethereum's Rinkeby. ## Can developers fix bugs in smart contracts after they are deployed? No. Deployed contracts are immutable, no changes are possible. If a bug is found that could put user's resources in risk, developers need to migrate assets to a new contract if possible. The only exception is when contracts are designed to be upgradeable and call external contracts to execute parts of its logic. In this case if a bug is found on the external contract, a new contract can be deployed with the bugfix and the main contract set to use the new and fixed external contract. --- More QAs coming soon!

"body": "After browsing crypto-related forums for a while, I found that many people have misconceptions and doubts about smart contracts and solidity. This article is a way to answer those questions in a clear language, which I hope can help to demystify the topic.\n\nThis article will be improved over time, as new questions come up, as the technology develops, and as I learn more about.\n\n## What's the difference between Tokens and Coins?\n\nCoins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) have their own blockchain and a proof-of-work algorithm that the only way to create new coins is by spending computing power (mining) to solve new blocks and receive coins as a reward. Tokens are an abstraction defined in a smart contract. It runs on top of a blockchain and cannot be mined. In Ethereum, to be called a Token, the smart contract must follow the ERC20 standard, which defines a set of common functions to interact with the contract, such as checking balances and transferring tokens.\n\n## Can tokens be transferred to a wallet?\n\nNo. Tokens live on the smart contract that defines the token. Ownership of a token is stored at the smart contract, in the event the contract is destroyed, there will be no reference of tokens and who owns them anymore.\n\n## Can Ether be converted to Tokens?\n\nSometimes. Some ICO contracts have a defined ratio so investors sending money to the contract will receive an equivalent in token. \nAnother way to convert Ether to Tokens is using an exchange.\n\n## Can tokens be mined?\n\nNo. There's no proof-of-work for tokens. Ethereum PoW does not affect the generation of tokens. In the other hand, tokens can be minted, when implemented in the smart contract.\n\n## Can tokens be stolen or hacked?\n\nYes. Smart contract is code and it can have bugs. Some bugs can allow hackers to transfer all funds to themselves. It's very important that contracts are well tested and audited by experienced blockchain developers.\n\n## How smart contracts are tested?\n\nContracts can be deployed to a local blockchain for local testing. The main tool to automate this process is called Truffle and Ganache. To test with users, contracts can be deployed to test-nets like Ethereum's Rinkeby.\n\n## Can developers fix bugs in smart contracts after they are deployed?\n\nNo. Deployed contracts are immutable, no changes are possible. If a bug is found that could put user's resources in risk, developers need to migrate assets to a new contract if possible. The only exception is when contracts are designed to be upgradeable and call external contracts to execute parts of its logic. In this case if a bug is found on the external contract, a new contract can be deployed with the bugfix and the main contract set to use the new and fixed external contract.",
