It’s slower. People talk slower, people walk slower. That thing where you stand on the right side of the escalator so people can pass on the left — yeah, people don’t really do that here. They stand wherever they like. It’s usually not a problem. He told me the concert was cancelled. Something broken on the ceiling of the theater.\nThis was especially aggravating because of everything I had gone through to get these tickets. My foreign credit card didn’t work on the ticket website, so I had to go to a physical ticket kiosk. But then the girl working the kiosk said the system was down. So I came back the next day, and the system was also down. No, it wasn’t “still” down — it was just down “again.” So I waited in a nearby chair in the mall for forty-five minutes. Then I finally got my tickets.\nAnd now the concert is cancelled. I go to the ticket booth at the theater to get my money back. But they tell me I can’t do that here — I have to go to a special kiosk, across town. Oh, and I can’t do it today — they won’t be ready to process my refund until tomorrow.\nI take the afternoon off to go get my refund. After standing in line for half an hour, they tell me they can’t process my refund on my foreign credit card. I have to fill out a form, which they’ll mail to the home office in Bogotá. I should get my refund within ten days.\nI’m always wary that I’m an immigrant living in another country — that sometimes the way they do things in that country makes no sense to me. I never want to come off as the “impatient gringo.” But at this point, I become the impatient gringo. I demand my money back, and recount the whole experience to the clerk. Months worth of pent-up tension melts away from the muscles in my neck and back. I feel relaxed — almost high.\nFlipping the “temporal switch”\nI call this moment the “temporal switch.” I’ve talked to other expats about this phenomenon, and they report something similar. That when you first come to Medellín, it takes awhile to get into the rhythm of life here. But once you’re in that rhythm, you’re more relaxed, more laid back. You’re even happier.\nYou might wonder what my concert catastrophe has to do with the rhythm of life in Colombia. I might be wrong, but somehow it seems that malfunctions are incredibly common here. It certainly seems so to myself and other expats that live here, and even Colombians agree. (If the concert incident is any support for this theory, I’ll add that I never did get a refund — I ended up calling AMEX to do a chargeback.)\nThese malfunctions have a symbiotic relationship with the rhythm of life. The internal chatter I experience whenever I make the temporal switch might provide some insight. I’m telling myself, “Things aren’t going to work out the first time you try them. You might as well relax, go with the flow, and enjoy the moment.”\nSo perhaps everyone is telling themselves that. “Things aren’t going to work out the first time you try them.” That could be a self-fulfilling prophecy.\nIn any case, even if things don’t work out on the first try, don’t worry. It will work out eventually. As the Colombians say, ¡No pasa nada!\nSome people are on “clock-time.” Other people are on “event-time.”\nThe main reason I chose Colombia as a place to double down on writing was that I simply do better writing while I’m here. This meeting will end once we’ve met the objective, and if that doesn’t take all afternoon, we’ll have this other meeting after that one.\nEvent-time and the “eight-day” week\nI went through the temporal switch several times before I knew about these two time orientations. Now that I know about clock-time and event-time, much of the behavior that I found puzzling now makes sense.\nThere’s no better illustration of event-time than how Colombians view a week. If a Colombian wants to meet with you a week from now, they will say, “en ocho dias” — in eight days.\nThe first time I heard this, I was incredibly confused. Today is Wednesday, so — ocho dias: next Thursday? I was surprised to learn that the eight-day “week” is the standard here in Colombia, as well as many other event-time countries. If today is Wednesday, eight days from now is also Wednesday.\nAs a clock-time person, I was initially convinced that this was objectively wrong. Counting on the clock, the meeting will take place more or less exactly seven days from now — seven rotations of the earth.\nBut if you think about it from an event-time perspective, it’s not wrong at all. Today is an event, which has not yet ended. There will be six additional days — each day its own event — between now and the meeting. The day the meeting takes place is an event in itself. Add that up — one, six, one, — and you’ve got eight days between now and the meeting which takes place a week from now.\nThis is not the Beatles’ Eight Days a Week. That was a malapropism — said by a chauffeur to illustrate that he was working hard. Instead, this is literally how event-time people see the week. It’s a refreshing thought, really: Today counts.\nBoth clock-time and event-time have their place\nIt can come off as politically incorrect to even point out these different attitudes about time. If any of these observations sound judgemental to you, stop and think: Is it because one approach sounds better to you than the other? Well there’s your problem!\nBoth event-time and clock-time are useful, for different contexts. Researchers Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier found that both clock-time and event-time approaches can lead to good outcomes. It depends what you’re trying to accomplish.\nIf you’re trying to be efficient, clock-time is the way to go. If you’re stacking bricks, Frederick Taylor’s approach to timing movements will get the wall up faster. It’s a clock-time approach.\nBut if you’re trying to be effective, event-time is the way to go. If you’re trying to think of the perfect gift for your tenth wedding anniversary, getting it right is more important than doing it quickly.\nAvnet and Sellier’s study also demonstrated that clock-time and event-time approaches aren’t strictly cultural. Most of us change our approach based upon what we’re trying to accomplish. It’s when we use a clock-time approach, when an event-time approach would be better, that we get ourselves into trouble.\nClock-time is a creativity killer\nConsider this study from Stanford. They found that the busier knowledge workers were, the less creative they were. The more they struggled to fit work into the time available, the more they let creativity fall by the wayside.\nCreative work is not like moving chunks of iron or stacking bricks. Ideas can be worthless, or they can be priceless. Ideas can also arrive in an instant. And when they do arrive, the moment they arrive is often far removed from the work that produced the idea.\nWhen the work you’re doing right now isn’t immediately bringing results, and when those results may come unpredictably — at any time — you can see how working on clock-time is a stressful recipe.\nUse time as a guide, not as restriction\nSo what’s the solution? Should you be a clock-time person, or should you be an event-time person? Obviously, if you can’t do anything on-time, you’re going to have a tough time. You’ll disrespect people by showing up late, you’ll miss deadlines. You’ll end up racing against the clock.\nBut I prefer to think of time as descriptive, not prescriptive. The minutes and hours on the clock are not little boxes that you need to stuff work into. The minutes and hours on the clock are instead rough measurements for how to allocate your energy.\nTime is a useful proxy for measuring and dividing up energy. It’s not a strict template for guiding every action you take.\nIf you read roughly an hour a day, you’ll read a lot of books. If you meditate roughly fifteen minutes a day, you’ll be more present the rest of your day. If you brainstorm something for five minutes today, the solution will come to you sometime tomorrow.\nIf instead, you’re trying to finish reading a chapter in the next ten minutes, or you’re trying to come up with the perfect company strategy before the meeting ends at noon, your efforts are just going to backfire. Avnet and Sellier have found that people who depend too much on the clock to dictate their schedules are less present, are less able to savor positive emotions, and are less open to the unpredictable and emerging opportunities that are inherent to creative work.\nPay attention to how you’re scheduling your work. Ask yourself: Am I working according to the clock — trying to fit work into restricted time; or am I working according to events — trying to get it right? Trump’s reelection might well be going better if he had the ability to quietly change the news feed that a plurality of Americans depend on to get their vision of the world.\n\n    Mark Zuckerberg isn’t powerful because he’s rich, he’s powerful because he’s neck-deep in social engineering, the art of manipulating people at scale.\n\nSeparation of powers, or a new kind of monarch\n\nEven when heads of government have the imprimatur of legitimacy granted them by a popular election, they typically are subject to various institutional hurdles and separation of powers that keep them from exercising absolute control. In a corporate model, the analogous constraint would be a board, which could vote a CEO out or in. He could unilaterally decide overnight to turn Facebook, a website whose membership is meaningfully larger than the population of China, into a propaganda arm for a religious cult, or a GeoCities-style Golden Girls fan site, or whatever he damn well pleased, and there’d be no above-board avenue I see to quickly displace him from his position.\n\nIn any professionalized field like law, medicine, or engineering, this would not be the case, to put it mildly: The U.S. surgeon general can’t simply decide to become a faith healer without consequences. The idea of, say, Anthony Fauci, MD, individually and singularly dictating patient-doctor interactions would be absurd: There’s a whole extant infrastructure that ensures patient safety is based on best practices, not a single individual’s whims, no matter how brilliant or wise.\n\nThat’s because the multiple-stakeholder model of separation of powers is somewhat mirrored in what happens in law, medicine, and engineering: established professions with norms, and certification, laid out explicitly and institutionally. (I see this as a baseline minimum for fixing the social costs that Silicon Valley has inflicted upon its users.) Much like how our constitutional system in the United States, at least theoretically, is designed to constrain the power of the presidency so as to avoid appearing like a monarchy.\n\nMonarchy might be the best term for the system run by tech CEO founders like Zuckerberg: holding immense powers of life and death for untold millions, and never subject to meaningful democratic restraints.\nWhat might a real 2020 election look like?\n\nA worthwhile thought experiment might be to ask what would happen if we elected the heads of the Big Tech companies. Imagine the user bases of Facebook, Apple, Google, and Amazon having a say in the holder of a position that affects their lives at a scale roughly equal to that of the U.S. president: What campaign promises might the CEOs run on?\n\nWe can imagine debates where candidates try to outdo each other on pledges of data protection, guarantee that they’ll step down if a single genocide is encouraged by Facebook policies during their tenure, or lay out how their First 100 Days will ensure their tools buttress societal mental health rather than imperil it.\n\nAs it stands, we can’t elect them — and while a more democratic economy is a goal I share, it’s a long-term project, and we have to live and use social tech tools in the interim. If we can’t elect them, then at the very least we should be able to hold them accountable. Professionalization is how we can get there — not just for Zuck but also for the others.\n\nBecause, as easy a target as he is, it’s not just Zuckerberg. Covid-19 has only accelerated the speed at which Amazon is effectively becoming our consumer economy, giving Jeff Bezos a power of central planning that might’ve made Khrushchev himself blush. The power over A.I. that Google has now would make any totalitarian autocrat jealous.\n\nAnd Apple? Apple’s market capitalization of $1 trillion, far greater than U.S. Steel, or Exxon Mobil, made it the world’s most valuable public company until Aramco, the Saudi-owned oil giant that qualifies as the world’s greatest daily oil producer, went public last December.\n\nIn a professionalized field, you can still end up with power imbalances, but nothing so outrageous as a single individual setting the terms for entire industries. Professionalization means advisory and certification boards that ensure you stay within your ethical mandates. It means you can be expelled from the field for abuse of power. And it means that there are systems in place that give entry-level workers a meaningful forum to express concerns and to blow the whistle when necessary without having to risk their careers.\n\nCEOs at the Big Four have to know that professionalization is their best protection against a public that won’t stand for their excesses forever. This summer has already seen all four of them brought before Congress, all playacting forms of obstinacy — with Bezos in particular, having never spoken to Congress before, unable to admit he hadn’t engaged in the anticompetitive behavior that the House Judiciary Committee is looking to mediate against.\n\nWe came extremely close this election cycle to having a major-party nominee with a Break Up Big Tech platform. Who’s to say that won’t happen by the next election cycle? But its executives and spokespeople have long insisted — mostly in private, though occasionally publicly — that these lists present an incomplete and potentially skewed picture of what’s popular on the social network. This week, the company took the rare step of offering actual data to support that claim. In a blog post titled, “What do people actually see on Facebook in the US?”, the company’s VP of analytics and chief marketing officer Alex Schultz dove into the methodology that underlies Roose’s lists, then contrasted that with other ways of slicing the data.\nsite:https://hcde.instructure.com/courses/90583/pages/123movies-watch-the-furies-2020-full-online-free-hd\nFacebook offered a total of four “top 10” charts showing different views of the most popular content on its platform for the week of October 23, in the run-up to the presidential election. The first of its charts uses methodology similar to Roose’s, albeit aggregated over a week rather than a day. It should look familiar to anyone who follows @facebookstop10:\nBut the fourth of Facebook’s lists seems to suggest that while conservative pages may indeed receive the most engagement, the publishers whose stories reach the largest number of Facebook users tend to be much more mainstream. In a chart showing the publisher domains whose links reached the most Facebook users in the week of October 23, the top sites are not Breitbart or the Daily Wire but cnn.com, foxnews.com, nbcnews.com, washingtonpost.com, and nytimes.com. If that’s the best way of understanding what news people are getting from Facebook, then perhaps it isn’t so different from the news they’d be getting off the platform. See the chart below:\nThe question, then, is how to reconcile those lists and make sense of what they tell us. Here, the details of the methodology are important. As Roose openly advertises, his top-10 lists are the output of a specific query on CrowdTangle, which I’ll try to explain in plain terms. He’s looking at “the sources of the 10 top-performing link posts by U.S. Facebook pages every day, ranked by total interactions” (italics mine).\nFirst, “link posts” means posts that include a link to a website, which rules out posts that are just a text status update, a photo, a Facebook Story, an embedded video, or any combination of the above. (That’s a lot of posts!) Second, looking at posts from “pages” means he’s only counting engagement on posts by, well, public Facebook Pages, and not individual Facebook users. That’s important because Facebook has systematically reduced the importance of pages over the years, in favor of posts from individuals and Facebook Groups. Finally, ranking link posts by “interactions” means that Roose is counting only active engagements such as likes and comments. So a post seen by 100 people that gets 20 likes will rank higher than one seen by 1,000 people that gets 10 likes. The point is that CrowdTangle’s data can only give us insight into a subset of a subset of a subset of Facebook activity — a niche that might plausibly be skewed toward some of the platform’s loudest and most emotionally manipulative voices.\nDoes that mean Facebook’s chart ranking publisher domains by reach — the one led by cnn.com, foxnews.com, and nbcnews.com — is more representative of the news people get from the social network? In his blog post, Facebook’s Schultz argues that it does indeed present “the actual balance of what people saw on Facebook in the week before the election.” He might be right: This sort of data has been long sought by researchers. But even Facebook’s chart is only a snapshot, one that may present an overly sanitized view of how news and political communication spreads on its platform. It doesn’t tell us how many people are actually clicking on those links to cnn.com et al., as opposed to simply scrolling past them. It doesn’t capture all the political content that people share in the form of memes, text posts, or videos. And of course, there’s the fact that Facebook chose to share this data only for a specific week, which may or may not have been representative.\nFor yet another angle on Facebook’s role in the news, we can look to data from NewsWhip, an independent social analytics firm. It publishes its own monthly lists of the top publishers and articles on Facebook, and you can view its most recent reports here. As with Facebook’s fourth chart, NewsWhip focuses on publisher domains, as well as individual article URLs. But like Roose’s lists, it ranks by engagement rather than reach. The output reads a bit like a mashup of the two, with conservative outlets such as Daily Wire and Breitbart jostling alongside Fox News and CNN, along with populist tabloids such as the Mail Online and New York Post. It also recently published a look specifically at political content on Facebook, whose clear takeaway was that Trump dominated Biden in engagement for the bulk of the campaign. NewsWhip’s rankings might come the closest to capturing the mix of news sources that most people see on Facebook. But they’re published only periodically, and offer only aggregate numbers that don’t tell us how information is traveling on the network or who’s posting it.\nNo single top-10 list can perfectly encapsulate Facebook’s role in the news. But Facebook’s blog post offers a tantalizing, and frustrating, glimpse at how better data could better inform our understanding — if only social media companies would make it available. Facebook representatives declined to comment on why it doesn’t share this sort of data more regularly, or incorporate it into CrowdTangle, but pointed me to Schultz’s Twitter exchange with Roose. To offer a perhaps cynical summary, Schultz noted that collecting this sort of data is hard and takes effort, which for a company valued at over $750 billion feels like another way of saying it simply isn’t a priority. He did say the company is working to expand access for researchers, at least.\nBut if transparency isn’t a priority for Facebook, it’s fair to note that Facebook at least gives more insight than rivals such as YouTube and TikTok, which offer no analytics tools comparable to CrowdTangle at all. (Twitter is easier to analyze because so many of its metrics are public.) YouTube recently shared via Twitter that the bulk of its election-related search results pointed to authoritative sources, but there’s reason to believe its recommendation algorithms are more influential than its search algorithm. The Times reported earlier this month on a study by an independent researcher that suggested a YouTube algorithm tweak had cut down on misinformation, but primarily benefited Fox News. On Twitter, another researcher disagreed, using different methodology to find that other mainstream news organizations also benefited. Such disputes are hard to resolve without more transparency from Google itself. Asked for comment, a YouTube representative said, “We are exploring options to bring in external researchers to study our systems and learn more about our approach and we will continue to invest in more teams and new features.”\nFor his part, Roose told me he appreciated the information Facebook shared in its blog post, but would find it more credible and valuable if they did it systematically, rather than on rare occasions when they have a public-relations bone to pick. “My only agenda here is to get more information and transparency out of Facebook,” Roose said. “They’re an extremely influential platform. They’re controlling big pieces of the news diet of billions of people. And we don’t frankly know much about what’s going on there. At the beginning of the monologue, he eased us into the belief that he was going to continue talking about himself. But without so much as a transition, he hit us with a joke about how White people should just wear Klan costumes to Walmart to make everyone feel safe. To call it a punch line doesn’t do the joke justice. Chapelle didn’t even seem to have his heart in the joke, speeding past it as if he was deciding if it should be cut as he was saying it. He thanked Covid for keeping “murderous Whites” off of the street and then clowned the president of the United States for contracting a life-threatening disease. He called poor White people welfare queens. The crowd groaned as much as they laughed and made those noises you make in church when your preacher gets to his point. And yet, at some moments, they were silent. Was the joke thudding or was the audience uncomfortable? Sometimes it was hard to tell when he was going from prepared jokes to just flying off the cuff, which has always been part of Chappelle’s charm.\nBut every single moment of the stand-up was calculated. His whole monologue was a look at what masks actually mean in America, which is a commentary on what identity means in the United States. From the idea of Klan masks as unnecessary markers of racial affiliations to the fact that Black people can’t take off their own masks.\nIn one of his more edgy bits, he describes a world where Whites need to look at life through “n***a eyes.” Black folks already know what it’s like to feel you’re wearing a mask that smothers or what it feels like to wear a police uniform with a constant target on your back.\nThis time, Chappelle wasn’t the reactionary curmudgeon who thinks insulting trans people is part of his calling to defend the sanctity of comedy. He wasn’t (completely) forcing himself into a corner of stale cancel culture jokes. He was in the moment. He was a hurricane of conflicting thoughts and conviction that reflects how so many of us have felt over the past week. Conflicted over partying for an American political system. Conflicted about how good to feel while 70 million people still voted for Trump. Many chalked it up to bad nutrition and a lack of activity. They tried to feed her soup. But the young woman barely had the energy to accept more than a few spoonfuls before she fell asleep.\nWithin a matter of days, Octavia stopped waking up altogether. A concerned James called the local doctor. Upon his arrival, the doctor declared her to be dead. James worried that he prematurely buried his wife. He got a crew together and dug up her grave. The widower prayed that his wife was still alive and just in a deep sleep.\nOnce they brought the coffin up and lifted the lid, James was distraught. Octavia lay still in her resting spot, motionless. One of the men who helped with the dig pointed to the sides and top of the casket.\nOctavia woke up and tried to scratch her way out of the box.\nJames cried as he realized the mistake he made. He buried his wife alive. The sadness gave way to anger as he yelled at the doctor for declaring her dead instead of doing a full checkup on her.\nThe widower never remarried. He did construct a marble statue in honor. As he accumulated wealth, he built a hotel and had it positioned so that his wife’s statue would look down on it.\nIn his later years, he built a smaller hotel named after his beloved son. The lobby became a museum for the two members of his family that passed on before he did.\nA Phobia Materializes\nBecause of what happened with his wife, James grew afraid of being buried alive. He had a custom-built coffin to make sure it never happened. And when choosing his gravesite, end to end with Octavia, he had a string attached to a bell in case he was buried alive.\nHe warned closer friends and family that there was a possibility that he would end up like his wife.
