CDC representatives later explained to U.S. News that data from late February shows total orders for childhood vaccines other than flu vaccines made through the CDC's Vaccines for Children program were down by 11 million doses when comparing 2020-2021 with 2019-2020.\n\n[ READ: First Children Receive Moderna’s Coronavirus Vaccine in Pediatric Trial ]\n\"When planning for your child's safe return to childcare programs or their return to school, please check with your child's doctor to make sure that they are up to date on their vaccinations,\" Walensky urged parents, pointing out that the CDC has a catch-up schedule for children who have gotten off track with their vaccines. They lack the extra indoor and outdoor space that their suburban and rural counterparts have to help keep children socially distanced. And many of them also lack the funding of their well-resourced peers to provide personal protective equipment and sanitization, hire additional staff – including nurses, social workers, janitors and bus drivers – and establish testing and tracing programs.\n\nMost notably, the low-income, Black and Hispanic communities that urban districts more often serve have been disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus.
