| title | How I Lifted, Pulled and Pushed Over 1.8 Million Ounces Of Metal...All By My Lonesome |
| body | Here we are again reviewing what I've been up to in the gym. It's been a couple of weeks since my last update which has been a matter of incremental steps each and every session. I'm following the How To Build A Classic Physique program which is mainly barbell focused. There are a few other supplementary exercises that I do too. Even counting those ones the number of different movements that I do each session is 5 or less. **Simple mind needs a simple workout.** The basic movements: Back Squat .jpg) Front Squat .jpg) Bench Press .jpg) Overhead Press Dips (weighted) .jpg) Dead Lift .jpg) Pull Ups (weighted) .jpg) These movements are about 90% of the total weight that I move in this program. I've been doing it for over 6 months and I feel it's been a great experience. Not because everything's been perfect and that it's been a steady stream of new personal marks. Far from it! I've had my share of set backs and plateaus. Right now my biggest plateau is the bench press. *(BTW, I am not in any of the photos.)* My occasional weight room posts are as much for myself as anybody since it gives me an outlet to confirm that I am actually sticking to this program for as longs as I have. Still, I hope that maybe one reader of this post or any of my others will take some heart for whatever program/system that they are following. Thanks for reading! |

"body": "Here we are again reviewing what I've been up to in the gym. It's been a couple of weeks since my last update which has been a matter of incremental steps each and every session.\n\n\n\nI'm following the How To Build A Classic Physique program which is mainly barbell focused. There are a few other supplementary exercises that I do too. Even counting those ones the number of different movements that I do each session is 5 or less.\n\n**Simple mind needs a simple workout.**\n\nThe basic movements: \n\nBack Squat\n\n.jpg)\n\nFront Squat\n\n.jpg)\n\nBench Press\n\n\n.jpg)\n\nOverhead Press\n\n\n\nDips (weighted)\n\n.jpg)\n\nDead Lift\n\n.jpg)\n\nPull Ups (weighted) \n\n.jpg)\n\nThese movements are about 90% of the total weight that I move in this program. I've been doing it for over 6 months and I feel it's been a great experience.\n\nNot because everything's been perfect and that it's been a steady stream of new personal marks. Far from it!\n\nI've had my share of set backs and plateaus. Right now my biggest plateau is the bench press.\n\n*(BTW, I am not in any of the photos.)*\n\nMy occasional weight room posts are as much for myself as anybody since it gives me an outlet to confirm that I am actually sticking to this program for as longs as I have. Still, I hope that maybe one reader of this post or any of my others will take some heart for whatever program/system that they are following.\n\nThanks for reading!",

| title | How Ethereum Came To Be And It Started With Excel |
| body | Do you recognize this guy? I didn't when I first saw the photo, but I am familiar with the name... Vitalik Buterin The mastermind behind Ethereum. Today's issue of the Financial Post has a great write up on Vitalik, Ethereum and the events and people surrounding the start of Ethereum in November 2013. That is when Vitalik wrote his Ethereum white paper. Some excerpts from the article that I found interesting and informative: *"A small group gathered at Pauper’s Pub in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood on a Saturday afternoon in November 2012 to talk about Bitcoin...One pale and gangly attendee said no thank you to the beer, pub food and most social interaction. His name was Vitalik Buterin and he was a first-year student at the University of Waterloo in southwestern Ontario..."* Vitalik was just 19 at this time. His white paper was published a year later! *"A few months after that gathering in Toronto, he dropped out of university to travel the world and write..."* Dropped out of college?? Who would've guessed?? #sarcasm *"Bitcoin had made it possible to send money around the world with no fees, banks or governments required; he had come up with a way to apply that idea to everything else and usher in Web 3.0, the looming decentralized version of the Internet, the possibilities of which are limitless."* A couple of paragraphs later... *"Buterin proposed building a new blockchain-based system called Ethereum with a programming model developers would find familiar, easy to understand and facilitated by a coding language capable of theoretically solving any computational problem. Ethereum had the potential to eliminate the need to trust a single company, person or government to keep massive amounts of money and data safe and secure."* Imagination, creativity, vision, technical skill...quite a combo! *" His parents moved to Toronto from Moscow in 1999, just before his sixth birthday. By then, Buterin had already taken to computers, playing with Excel on an old PC at the age of four."* There's your Excel connection. *"Years later when Buterin told his father he was thinking about dropping out of university to travel the world and learn about Bitcoin, Dmitry says he was all for it. “’I told him, ‘You know what? If you stay, you will have a very nice, guaranteed job at Apple, Google, whatever. You’ll make $100,000, probably more,” Dmitry says. “’If you drop out, it will be different, more challenging in life. But you will learn so much more than you learn in university. It’s fine if you do that.’"* Well said, Mr. Buterin, well said. The article continues on with the period during and after the release of the Ethereum white paper. Several people other than just Vitalik were Ethereum founders and what they all envisioned it to be was not unanimous. *"They had long, agonizing debates about whether Ethereum should be modelled after Google, a giant for-profit corporation, or Mozilla, the not-for-profit foundation that makes the open-source Firefox browser."* This and other problems intensified to the point: *"To sort out their differences, the team met in person at a rented house in Zug, Switzerland...Buterin’s conviction that Ethereum should be run as a non-profit won out, shattering the dreams of some of the more business-minded co-founders."* Then Vitalik had to grow up quickly. *"After getting his way in Zug, he discovered the fate of the project rested on his shoulders. “I realized I was the one who had the ability to make a decision,” he says. “I really felt like, ‘Oh my God, a lot of this is actually on me.’”* During the first half of 2014 there were plenty of challenges for Vitalik and the remaining founders, especially money. The group was going into debt to pay for lawyers and other overhead, but they did not want to bring in outside investors. Then, the masterstroke happened. *"Ethereum’s legal team was finally confident it had found a way to avoid regulatory problems. Instead of selling equity or debt, Ethereum offered a product: Ether, the Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency built into the platform. In order to avoid overloading the system and incent developers to write efficient code, all transactions and applications built on Ethereum require ether to run."* Issuing Ether allowed the group to stay out of regulatory crosshairs and give developers an incentive to make Ethereum useful and sustainable for all. The crowdsale of Ethereum commenced with every 2,000 Ether available for 1 bitcoin. After 42 days, the group raised 31,000 bitcoins or $18 million. The market value of Ether is now in excess of $200 million. It hasn't been all smooth sailing since the crowdsale, of course. *"it has yet to change the world. There are few Ethereum-based applications that an average person who doesn’t know how to code would find useful. The experiments being conducted by major companies and banks have mostly been restricted to tests and proofs of concept. More technological breakthroughs are needed to allow Ethereum to handle the volume of data processed daily by today’s centralized Internet juggernauts."* Still, the college drop out remains positive. *"Within five years, he thinks Ethereum will have launched some major applications that will be useful to large groups of people, bringing us closer to the crypto-enthusiast’s dream of “decentralizing all the things.”* Keep it, Vitalik! |

Who would've guessed?? #sarcasm\n\n*\"Bitcoin had made it possible to send money around the world with no fees, banks or governments required; he had come up with a way to apply that idea to everything else and usher in Web 3.0, the looming decentralized version of the Internet, the possibilities of which are limitless.\"*\n\nA couple of paragraphs later...\n\n*\"Buterin proposed building a new blockchain-based system called Ethereum with a programming model developers would find familiar, easy to understand and facilitated by a coding language capable of theoretically solving any computational problem. Ethereum had the potential to eliminate the need to trust a single company, person or government to keep massive amounts of money and data safe and secure.\"*\n\nImagination, creativity, vision, technical skill...quite a combo!\n\n*\" His parents moved to Toronto from Moscow in 1999, just before his sixth birthday. By then, Buterin had already taken to computers, playing with Excel on an old PC at the age of four.\"*\n\nThere's your Excel connection.\n\n*\"Years later when Buterin told his father he was thinking about dropping out of university to travel the world and learn about Bitcoin, Dmitry says he was all for it. It’s fine if you do that.’\"*\n\nWell said, Mr. Buterin, well said.\n\nThe article continues on with the period during and after the release of the Ethereum white paper. Several people other than just Vitalik were Ethereum founders and what they all envisioned it to be was not unanimous.\n\n*\"They had long, agonizing debates about whether Ethereum should be modelled after Google, a giant for-profit corporation, or Mozilla, the not-for-profit foundation that makes the open-source Firefox browser.\"*\n\nThis and other problems intensified to the point:\n\n*\"To sort out their differences, the team met in person at a rented house in Zug, Switzerland...Buterin’s conviction that Ethereum should be run as a non-profit won out, shattering the dreams of some of the more business-minded co-founders.\"*\n\nThen Vitalik had to grow up quickly.\n\n*\"After getting his way in Zug, he discovered the fate of the project rested on his shoulders. “I realized I was the one who had the ability to make a decision,” he says. “I really felt like, ‘Oh my God, a lot of this is actually on me.’”*\n\nDuring the first half of 2014 there were plenty of challenges for Vitalik and the remaining founders, especially money. The group was going into debt to pay for lawyers and other overhead, but they did not want to bring in outside investors.\n\nThen, the masterstroke happened.\n\n*\"Ethereum’s legal team was finally confident it had found a way to avoid regulatory problems. Instead of selling equity or debt, Ethereum offered a product: Ether, the Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency built into the platform. In order to avoid overloading the system and incent developers to write efficient code, all transactions and applications built on Ethereum require ether to run.\"*\n\nIssuing Ether allowed the group to stay out of regulatory crosshairs and give developers an incentive to make Ethereum useful and sustainable for all.\n\nThe crowdsale of Ethereum commenced with every 2,000 Ether available for 1 bitcoin. After 42 days, the group raised 31,000 bitcoins or $18 million. The market value of Ether is now in excess of $200 million.\n\nIt hasn't been all smooth sailing since the crowdsale, of course.\n\n*\"it has yet to change the world. There are few Ethereum-based applications that an average person who doesn’t know how to code would find useful. The experiments being conducted by major companies and banks have mostly been restricted to tests and proofs of concept. More technological breakthroughs are needed to allow Ethereum to handle the volume of data processed daily by today’s centralized Internet juggernauts.\"*\n\nStill, the college drop out remains positive.\n\n*\"Within five years, he thinks Ethereum will have launched some major applications that will be useful to large groups of people, bringing us closer to the crypto-enthusiast’s dream of “decentralizing all the things.”*\n\nKeep it, Vitalik!",

| title | Pushed, Pulled and Lifted Over 36 Tons In Less Than A Week's Time |
| body | More precisely I did this during five different trips this month to the gym, June 13, 15, 17, 20 and 22. While today is the 26th and I could include my numbers from Saturday the 24th, I won't because I will save them for my next post. I'm less than 6 months from turning 50 and I will continue to work this How To Build A Classic Physique program until that day arrives. It certainly won't be a linear improvement in my numbers going forward. I know that because it has not been that way so far. There's been more than enough plateaus since I started this program and I don't expect that change. It will become more difficult mentally and physically to keeping improving my weight numbers. Still, that's my plan. Anyway, the total weight lifted (in tons!) over these five sessions for each movement... bench press - 6.3 tons dead lift - 4.6 tons tricep dips - 1.3 tons front squat - 5.5 tons curls - 1.3 tons overhead press - 2.1 tons pull ups - 0.5 tons back squat - 10 tons step back lunge - 5 tons Inside the numbers I have hit new marks in the pulls ups, dips, bench, dead lift and back squat. I've hit a plateau in the overhead press which has persisted for several sessions and the front squat is a bit flat numbers wise. Like I said before improvement from one session to another is not a sure thing. Still the improvement is happening. Thanks for reading! |

| title | How One Man Can Lift Over 91,000 Pounds By Himself And Live To Write About It |
| body | I started writing about my workouts these last months on Steemit in order to complement what I was doing in the gym. It's been sort of an added discipline to go along with the discipline of going to the gym. Write about what I did for my own benefit and to help someone else even in some small way. After over 30 posts for each separate workout, I changed things up. Instead I will post either once a week or once every two weeks. Why? I can't give a good reason other than I want to be consistent even if it means being less frequent with my posts. So what about the 91,000 pounds? Well, it's actually 91,253 pounds that I'm talking about. It's what I've lifted over the last couple of weeks since my last workout. Hey, it sounds cool! The lifts which I cycle through each workout (3 per week): *squat *bench press *dead lift *tricep dips *curls *front squat *overhead press *pull ups *barbell lunges, forward or backward It's a pretty straightforward routine based on a old school program I bought a few months ago called How To Build A Classic Physique. The apex of each movement is doing 3 sets of 5 reps at a weight that is slightly heavier than the previous time. The one exception is the dead lift where it's 1 set of 5 reps. Over these last couple of weeks I have set new marks a few times among these movements. My current highs for each of the movements: *squat - 180 lbs *bench press - 175 lbs. *dead lift - 240 lbs. *tricep dips - 56.125 lbs. *front squat - 162.5 lbs. *pull ups - 33.75 lbs. *overhead press - 123.75 lbs. Each of these numbers have slowly increased these last few weeks. It is not always a new mark each time, however. Like today I was shooting for a new high in the squat and the bench press, but it did not happen. My lower back was too tight for my taste on the squat, so I just stayed with the previous mark. Then on the bench I just did not have enough for my very last rep. Those things happen; 2 steps forward and 1 step backward. |

It's been sort of an added discipline to go along with the discipline of going to the gym. Write about what I did for my own benefit and to help someone else even in some small way.\n\n\n\nAfter over 30 posts for each separate workout, I changed things up. Instead I will post either once a week or once every two weeks.\n\nWhy? I can't give a good reason other than I want to be consistent even if it means being less frequent with my posts.\n\nSo what about the 91,000 pounds? Well, it's actually 91,253 pounds that I'm talking about.\n\nIt's what I've lifted over the last couple of weeks since my last workout. | title | How To Build A Classic Physique Continues One Session At A Time |
| body | It's Sunday and I'm way late on my gym session updates here on Steemit. Work's been busy and so has the domestic front so while I've still gone to the gym, my writing about it has been very delayed. I write these missives for myself as much as for anybody else. It adds to my accountability for continuing to go the gym even though there's really no payoff when it's all said and done. Because it will never be done. Anyway, the numbers from Thursday... front squat - 10x45 5x95 3x105 2x115 2x125 2x135 2x145 3x5x160 4x135 This is a new mark (yea!) and my form was real solid too. I gotta tell that I am beginning to really appreciate the benefits of this awkward exercise. bench press - 10x45 5x95 3x135 2x155 5x171.25 5x171.25 5x172.5 This may be a new high for me. I'm slowly steadily pushing my numbers higher on this one. My weight is right about 170 so I hope to easily exceed that very soon. dead lift - 5x135 5x185 5x227.5 3x205 Not a new mark, but I'm getting close to matching it again. dips - 3x5x53.75 This is a new high for this tricep workout. hammer curls - 3x10x30 As an aside, I have not posted any photos of myself because I'm a lousy selfie taker. If any of you want me to do so just let me know. Thanks for reading. |

| body | From the May 24th issue of the Financial Post... *"Is the U.S. about to kill the open Internet and will Canada save it? The new chair of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to jettison America’s “net neutrality” regulations and replace them with guidelines. The New York Times, in a spirited editorial headline last month, summarized it like this: “FCC Invokes Internet Freedom While Trying to Kill It.”* I don't know about you, but I needed a refresher about what net neutrality is all about. The commentator, Kenneth Engelhart, provides the lowdown *"The term was coined by Columbia law professor Tim Wu in 2003. He noted that the Internet treated everyone’s content the same way; no app or user got special treatment. Neutrality, Wu writes on his website, is what “a maximally useful public information network aspires to.” However, Wu was concerned that ISPs would start to play favourites."* The FCC under the current administration will largely ditch net neutrality giving anyone interested in the topic a great opportunity to gauge what, if any, impact these regulations have on consumers, internet service providers and the Internet as a whole. While Mr. Engelhart, who is a Toronto attorney specializing in this field, has his own views on how this plays out, how do you think it will develop. Regardless, let the experiment begin. |

| body | It's warming up here in the Pacific NW with a couple of 90 degree days to start the week. Some readers may scoff at these temps, but that's up there for this time of year in Oregon. That meant a warmer house last night than anytime the last 8 months. Which resulted in me, your trusty How To Build A Classic Physique devotee/diarist, not having a good night of sleep. Not even close. Still, I got up at 5am and did my gym thing. It was actually a little more crowded than normal, but the benefit of getting there when I do means I'm about half way done with my workout by the time things get busy. This is especially pertinent on the squat racks where it is common for those to be occupied for 10 plus minutes once someone starts using them. Me? I can be on squat rack for over a half hour on days like today where my 2nd workout is the overhead press. Getting to the gym earlier than the most of the crowd means I won't be hogging it for too long if the other racks are being used at the same time. Just thinking of others, ya know! Anyway, the numbers... squat - 10x45 5x95 5x115 3x125 3x135 2x145 2x155 2x5x165 5x170 5x145 My right hip was little tighter than it has been these last couple of weeks. The build up sets didn't feel great, but I was focused of keeping good form and depth so by the time I got to my heavy sets (and using my weight belt) I felt pretty good. overhead press - 10x45 2x95 2x105 5x117.5 5x118.7 5x120 3x100 This is just a bit more than last my session. Saturday I will aim for the 120 mark for all 3 sets. That would match my high point from last month. pull ups - 3x5x31.25 Not a new mark. In fact, this is a definite plateau for me after just now looking at my numbers before my trip back east a couple of weeks ago. Gotta step it up on Saturday. barbell walking lunges - 3x16x100 My usual finisher on the overhead press days. |

| title | What It Took To Finally Get Some Quiet Time At The Gym |
| body | Not that I was looking for quiet time, per se, but walking into the gym this (Saturday) morning at 6am I found myself to be the ONLY person on the main level of the gym. We're talking about a.n area of 6,000 square feet of space containing more than 5 dozen machines and work out spaces. It was just me in all that space. (I liked it cause I'm something of a loner.) After about 30 minutes a couple of more guys arrived to work out, but no surprise there right? Now it's not like I wanted to have the gym all to myself, but having it happen for the first time ever was kinda cool. Anyway, the numbers... squat - 10x45 5x95 5x115 3x125 3x135 2x145 1x155 3x5x165 4x145 I don't think that's the high mark for the squat. Still it was the best version of the squat when it came to my form/depth. Plus my right hip was not an impediment. Next time I will shoot for 170. bench press - 10x45 5x95 4x135 3x145 1x155 1x165 5x170 2x5x171.25 4x145 This is a new mark for me in the bench press. The very last rep on the last set was almost a fail. I had a spotter on this one who gave me verbal encouragement to finish that last rep and I just barely got it. dead lift - 5x135 5x185 5x225 5x205 Not a new mark here, but it was a 10 lb bump from last time. No hip issues after this one either. dips - 3x5x53.12 This is a new mark. Those small metal rings really come in handy for getting those small, steady gains. outward curls - 3x12x30 This is an improvement from last time since I took an extra minute or two between sets. It was a good workout for sure with new highs in the bench press and tricep dips. Still I will be much more satisfied when I can finally get my squat to well exceed my bench press. It's getting closer. Thanks for reading. |

Still it was the best version of the squat when it came to my form/depth. Plus my right hip was not an impediment.
