| title | Chaos, Crime and Hate |
| body | Wow, what a time we are living in! The level of violence that seems to be a part of daily life in the world, especially within the United States, is definitely on a different level than before. Folks have, or are becoming, more polarized than ever. The standard now seems to be if you agree with someone's views you are right or good. However, if you disagree with them you are evil! This distorted viewpoint has received much of its impetus from our colleges and universities. The age of the vast majority of college students is between 18 and 23. We know from psychological studies these ages fall into the time when folks are filled with idealism concerning their place within the world. In times past, this idealism was translated into acts of kindness toward others, opposition to war and the forced subjugation of tribes, cultures and nations to the stronger power of another. This idealism was expressed in interaction with governmental leaders, with media in all forms and with peaceful demonstrations. (I should probably bold type the word "peaceful" but, I don't know how to do that yet.) The contrast to the recent tragedies we have seen played out recently are horrible and painful for most of us. What in the world allows an individual to see shooting up a schools, entertainment events, and churches, as a rational response to their inner pain and anger? It is beyond insane to justify these sick acts of violence that are being directed against the innocent in our society. Personally, although many think otherwise, I do not believe that gun usage is the problem or the main issue in confronting this wickedness. The use of the term, "assault weapon" means absolutely nothing to anyone except those who use this term to incite an image of evil in the minds of the hearer or reader. It's not a matter of smaller magazines as the average rate of fire of these idiots, ( Las Vegas and Southland, TX are not included in the study) is slower than the firing and reloading of a Revolutionary War musket. This is a fact and not simply my opinion. Also, its not a matter of enacting new laws as we already regulate gun usage to a large degree. We simply need to enforce the laws that are already on the books. I know this is indicative of my opinion concerning firearms and that is not where I am going so please don't stop reading yet. I once heard a minister say that the outlawing of abortion was not going to stop the practice of it. This minister got a ton of grief from others within the pro-life community. But, its a simple fact that laws do not stop someone who has decided, and is determined, to disobey them. It is the same with almost every issue confronting modern society today. The only way we are going to truly reduce the occurrence of such wickedness is by changing the minds and hearts of these individuals. When this happens you don't even need a law. For instance, in the Roman Empire, slavery was a legal reality. So why did this practice cease within the Empire? This occurred primarily because Christianity taught that a man or woman was either fellow believer or one to be won to Christ. Plus, there was also the command to love your neighbor as yourself. When these ideas became a reality in the hearts and minds of the people the practice of slavery began to radically decline. When this heart change took hold, the passing of the law to abolish slavery was not the impetus for this change. It was a reflection of the new reality. The law was a reflection of what was already occurring within that society. As we are still human beings we too have the ability to alter our behavior and attitudes towards one another. I can accept that when this is applied to the individual shooters it does not seem to be a very potent response. And I am not saying we shouldn't make or pass laws that reflect the attitudes of the citizenry of a country. We should always be open to ideas that are rational and reasonable in their tenor and application. However, now is not the time for going beyond a knee jerk of a purely emotional response to these terrible things as we begin to articulate and engage in a new reality. It is time for each of us to look within our own hearts and begin the process of dealing with the hatred that separates us from one another. I wouldn't be truthful if I said that I don't believe faith in Jesus the Christ is the surest and quickest way to change one's heart. It is my personal belief that each of us has the ability to make such changes within our hearts. There is a reason why Christian churches are subject to such violence throughout the world. The reason is found in the understanding that vengeance and judgment are to be kept in the hand of God and good governance. And, if someone wants to point out the actions of the Crusaders as indicative of Christian behavior, I take exception to this idea. The vast majority of these folks were not even Christian in the Biblical definition of the word and there is nothing in the Scriptures, especially in the New Testament, that can be used to justify their wickedness against their fellow man. If Jesus didn't say it or do it then we don't need to do it either. Like Him, we are to be healers instead of hurters. Whatever ones family background, heritage or culture, we all need to take a minute to look within ourselves and consider our own words, actions, and attitudes. Please, make sure there is nothing within your heart that agrees with hatred, racism and bigotry and then act in manner that shows such attitudes and acts have no place within you. Once you have purged these things from the inside begin to act like they are gone on the outside too. Before we can change others we have to begin to change ourselves first. I don't think anybody would say that such a change would be a bad thing. |

"body": "Wow, what a time we are living in! \n\nThe age of the vast majority of college students is between 18 and 23. (I should probably bold type the word \"peaceful\" but, I don't know how to do that yet.)\n\nThe contrast to the recent tragedies we have seen played out recently are horrible and painful for most of us. \n\nThe use of the term, \"assault weapon\" means absolutely nothing to anyone except those who use this term to incite an image of evil in the minds of the hearer or reader. \n\nI once heard a minister say that the outlawing of abortion was not going to stop the practice of it. When this happens you don't even need a law.\n\nFor instance, in the Roman Empire, slavery was a legal reality. As we are still human beings we too have the ability to alter our behavior and attitudes towards one another.\n\nI can accept that when this is applied to the individual shooters it does not seem to be a very potent response. | title | Righteousness and Happiness: Are they mutually opposed? |
| body | I don't know the backgrounds of those who may read this post, but I want to put some background in place for the consideration of this topic. If you were one that grew up in a conservative church environment the idea of righteousness and happiness occupying the same space was so outlandish that no one even asked the question. In that environment, righteousness involved the embracing of a lifestyle of denial. A righteous person would be one that fasted everything except water on a regular basis. And all that time spent engaged in secular or "carnal" pursuits such as watching television, attending sporting events, going to parties, etc. was time that was better spent in prayer. Therefore, the righteous person only came out of their house for events the occurred at and as a church. (Some day we may actually embrace the idea that church is not a place we go to, but it is when two or more come together as the Body.) The righteous individual was a person that was serious and sober minded at all times so they wouldn't be found spending to much time engaged in joke-telling and laughter. These characteristics came together in such a way that these folks were those that modeled a righteous lifestyle and they were worthy examples of what it meant to be a servant of God. And if one obtained a good testimony as a result of their efforts that was fine. It was fine as long as they never fell from that high and lofty perch because if they did we were taught to see them as utterly lost and in need of a salvation experience once again. Too many folks have fought over the question of whether one could lose their salvation. That is not the question that we are seeking to answer today. However, I personally believe there will be people in heaven that nobody thought would make it in and there will be others whose absence will be a surprise to all those that knew them. On the other hand, the word, "happiness", was seen as light and easy and breezy for those that enjoyed its merits. The happy person was seen as nonjudgmental, accepting of others and enjoyable to be around. They laughed often, both at themselves and at others efforts to be humorous. And yes, they too would pray and sometimes even fast as well, but these activities were not seen as the adjectives of their lifestyle. Yes, they loved the Lord and they were followers of Jesus, but if you wanted to know if this was the case you might have to ask them. Their Christianity was not one they would wear on their shoulder. It may be an oversimplification, but I believe that righteousness could be considered a characteristic of the Old Testament, while happiness or joy is more closely associated with the New Testament. When one considers the situations that the Old Testament addressed it is not hard to see why happiness is not at the forefront. The fall of man, the great flood because of iniquity, 440 years of slavery, 40 years in the wilderness, the fall of Israel, the destruction of the Temple. When you consider a list like this there isn't a whole lot to be happy about. Within the New Testament we have the crucifixion as a heavy subject, but we also have the first coming of the Messiah, liberty from the Mosaic dietary and sacrificial laws, and the constant message concerning the grace of God being released through Yeshua. The New Testament reintroduces the concepts of hope and freedom. If one is to experience true happiness, both of the these ingredients are vital and necessary. Even within the heavy times of the First Covenant, from Genesis 3 to Malachi we have to the Promise of the Messiah. While we do not always have a trumpeting of this message throughout the First Covenant, nevertheless, this Promise is a consistent one within its pages. In the New Covenant we have the proclamation that liberty, healing, hope, peace, love, joy, and contentment have now come and can be obtained through faith in Yeshua as the Christ. The First Covenant told us that we could have liberty, healing, peace, etc. through the Law of Moses by keeping its commands. At the same time though the Scriptures tell us that no one is capable of keeping the law through his or her own efforts. The New Covenant foregoes the efforts of men to be righteous by allowing us to take on the righteousness of the Christ. Because we have seen hope fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah the first time, we can have a greater confidence when we read His declaration that He will be coming again. By obtaining the Promise of Messiah we have an even greater assurance of those things we have yet to obtain. It is assumed that the obtaining of salvation through faith in Him will produce within us a hope and a happiness. That is why 1st Peter 3:15 tells us to, "...sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;" When we have our confidence in Him others will see it and will wonder if they could have this hope; this contentment, or this joy as well. The answer to the question, "Are righteousness and happiness mutually opposed to each other?" is found in the source of both of these conditions. If we are trying to create and walk in our own righteousness, even when we are doing so in respect to the Lord, we will fail. However, if we, by faith, allow His righteousness to become our righteousness we will experience the happiness that comes from Him as we acknowledge Yeshua as our Savior and our Lord. |

| title | When will be happy with this life? |
| body | Why has the displaying of the American flag at public schools or respecting the national anthem at sports events now "political" issues? What is wrong with compartmentalization where we go to a ballgame because it is a sporting event or to a particular church because we want to worship in a particular manner? How have we become so regionally segregated; so /urban vs. rural/Christian vs. any other religion/rich vs. poor; segmented? How can someone consider themselves to be liberal while demanding that the competing views of others be censored? Can anybody actually believe this current situation is a better way to enjoy, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?" I guess one can be considered "old" when they have lived long enough to experience and discern the paradigm shifts in culture, faith, and politics within their lifetime. I can even go further and submit that the years and experiences of the 20th century were superior to the time we now live in. I am not suggesting this because there was more agreement between folks of differing views and ideas. I believe it was a better time because disagreement between folks did not mean one group had to be "haters", racists, sexists, etc. on the basis of their opinions. I don't think it is a stretch to say that we are now living in the least tolerant American culture since the 1950's. I can't speak to before the 50's as I wasn't around then. But, maybe its time to consider the cost of proceeding in this current level of hostility and intolerance. Can anybody tell me they are happier because they are required to reject and, at times, hate those who view the world differently than we do? Are we more content emotionally and intellectually today than we were yesterday? And if the answer to that question is no, what are we willing to do to change the situation? I hope we are not yet to the point where we can't enjoy life unless everybody thinks, acts, votes, or worships the way we do. What a boring place this world would be if everybody had to think like me! How much have any of us learned by only listening to those that say the same things we would say in their place? Diversity is a big deal these days. However, we have a problem and will continue to struggle until we can first begin to accept and embrace some diversity between our ears. Without diversity in this arena will any other type of diversity really matter? Love your neighbor as you love yourself, is still the best method for enjoying the human experience when interaction is required. I certainly can't require this from others unless I first require it of myself. What are you willing to not hate in order to make America great in the ways the really matter? |

| title | End time events; are they the real deal? |
| body | In the second week of August a pastor friend of mine called one morning and shared a dream he had the previous night. In this dream he heard the Lord say, "Within 70 days I will bring destruction to this land." The Lord also told him, "The world will bend (or bow) like reeds before me." (For informational purposes, the 70th day would be October the 20th.) Naturally, he was quite troubled by what he had heard and he tried hard to find any kind of explanation that didn't involve the Lord speaking to him in a dream. Within a week of this dream, there was a scheduled mission's conference that occurred in eastern Kentucky. In one of the evening meetings one of the missionaries stood and said, (I'm paraphrasing here) "the church needs to get ready because from the middle of September until the middle of October things are going to get rough." After he said this at least 6 others missionaries stood and confirmed that they had heard this same warning in their private times of prayer. Now, I don't really know how much these things will mean to Steemit's readers, but please consider with me what has occurred in the U.S. since that time. First, we have had the successive hurricanes. Harvey, Irma, Maria and Jose were sources of death and destruction from Texas to Florida. In this same time frame we have had a series of fires in the Southwest that caused tremendous amounts of damage as well. Lest we forget, we also had the huge earthquake and its aftershocks in Mexico City . Finally, we had seen the death and destruction at the concert in Las Vegas. I don't think we have enough information to say that the perpetrator was sane or not, but there can be no doubt that he was an incredibly evil individual. If we were to treat any of one these events as a separate issue, while all were terrible, they would not have any particular significance beyond the pain and terror endured by those who were affected by them. However, when these events are seen in light of the prophetic warnings that occurred beforehand, how can we see them as anything but a warning for us all? And, if this was a warning, how much more terrible will the event that has been preceded by these occurrences be? I do want to say that I have not shared this post for the purpose of justifying my faith in Jesus as Messiah. That is a set issue in my own life. I am sharing this for your consideration of what might prove to be one of the most significance events in our lifetimes. And yes, in all honesty, I do not want anyone to leave this life without experiencing a personal relationship with Jesus. Please consider, with me and others, what these events and the warnings subsequent to them might mean for us as a people. If you have any questions or want to talk about this further please feel free to contact me at your convenience. |
