A formal flag meeting was underway when a Chinese officer suddenly said to the Indian commander,\n“Stop that soldier of yours who enters our territory at night on a white horse.”\n\nA faint smile appeared on the Indian officer’s face—because he knew the truth.\nThere was no patrol in that area. No horse. No living soldier.\n\nAnd yet, there was a soldier.\nA soldier who never left his post—even after death.\n\nThis is the story of Baba Harbhajan Singh, a jawan who was martyred in 1968, but who is believed to be guarding India’s borders even today.\n\nFrom Punjab to the Indian Army\n\nThe roots of this story go back to pre-Partition Punjab.\nHarbhajan Singh was born in 1941 in the Kapurthala district—an area that later became part of Pakistan. After Partition, his family left everything behind and migrated to India. Farming became their livelihood.\n\nBy day, Harbhajan helped his father in the fields. By evening, he gazed at the sky, watching fighter jets roar past—dreaming of wearing the uniform one day and standing guard at the nation’s borders.\n\nHard work paid off.\nIn 1965, Harbhajan Singh was recruited into the Indian Army and became part of the 23 Punjab Regiment.\n\nPosting at Nathula Pass\n\nHis first posting was in the icy heights of Sikkim, just steps away from the India–China border.\nThis was a land where even daylight felt dark—endless clouds, snow-covered terrain, deadly cold, low oxygen, and danger at every step.\n\nYet Harbhajan never hesitated.\nHe woke up first, helped his comrades, and completed every task without complaint. His honesty and devotion earned him a nickname from fellow soldiers—“Baba.”\nA name that would later become immortal.\n\nThe Day of Sacrifice – October 1968\n\nIn October 1968, continuous rain battered Nathula Pass. The paths were buried under mud and snow, and temperatures had dropped below zero.\n\nDespite the conditions, Harbhajan was assigned to carry food and ammunition on mules to a forward post.\n\nThat morning, he tightened his boots, looked toward the flag, and set out.\n\nThe sky was dark. Winds were fierce. Clouds hung low.\nBut duty on the border is never postponed.\n\nThe trail was extremely dangerous—sheer mountains on one side, a deep gorge on the other, and a freezing river below where a fall meant certain death.\n\nSuddenly, a rock fell from above.\nThe mules panicked. As Harbhajan stepped forward to control them, his foot slipped.\n\nIn the next instant, he fell off the cliff into the roaring river below.\n\nWithin seconds, everything went silent.\n\nHis body was carried nearly two kilometers by the current.\n\nA Message from Beyond\n\nWhen Harbhajan did not return by evening, concern spread through the camp. Search teams were deployed, but snow had erased every trail.\n\nOne day passed. Then two. Then three.\nNothing.\n\nHis file was marked “Missing in Action.”\n\nThe camp was silent. How could such a dedicated soldier simply vanish?\n\nOn the fifth night, something extraordinary happened.\n\nA close friend of Harbhajan saw him in a dream—standing calmly in full uniform.\nHarbhajan said,\n“Don’t stop searching. My body is stuck beneath a large rock in the river.”\n\nHe described the location with absolute precision.\n\nThough initially met with disbelief, the details were too exact to ignore. Another search team was sent—and then, a miracle occurred.\n\nExactly where described, beneath the same rock, at the same depth, Harbhajan Singh’s body was found.\n\nHis uniform was clean.\nHis weapon was secured at his waist.\nHis face was peaceful—as if asleep.\n\nThe entire camp stood in stunned silence.\n\nThe Legend Begins\n\nHarbhajan Singh was given full military honors. Wrapped in the tricolor, he was laid to rest at Nathula Pass.\n\nEveryone believed the story had ended.\n\nBut in reality—it had just begun.\n\nAfter his martyrdom, strange incidents started occurring at Nathula.\n\nFootsteps in the snow at night.\nVoices outside bunkers.\nShadows in searchlights.\n\nThis wasn’t one man’s imagination—the entire camp experienced it.\n\nOne night at exactly 2:00 AM, a soldier on duty began to doze off.\nA hand tapped his shoulder and a voice said,\n“Wake up. You’re on duty.”\n\nHe jolted awake. No one was there—only fresh boot prints in the snow.\n\nOn another freezing February night, two soldiers saw a glowing figure across the valley—helmet on, rifle in hand, light shining. When the searchlight turned toward it, the figure vanished.\n\nBut moments later, a wireless message crackled:\n“Be alert. Be alert.
