      "body": "<html>\n<p>For 2012 and most of 2013, I lived in the south of France, along the route of <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_du_Midi\">the Canal du Midi</a>. It’s a 400-year-old canal that runs from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. It was originally used for carrying goods and passengers, though these days it’s a <a href=\"http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/770\">UNESCO heritage site</a> and popular pleasure boating route.There are barges that still ply the 220-km waterway–my friends run <a href=\"http://www.athosdumidi.com/\">one such floating luxury hotel</a>. Before those barges had engines, they used horses, donkeys and humans to tow them along a path along the canal’s edge. This tow path is still there, and it makes for excellent cycling. The tree-lined path is, naturally, very flat, and winds its way through beautiful pastoral scenes.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://www.darrenbarefoot.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/7809244706_24bf7f12ae_b.jpg\"/></p>\n<p>My wife and I rode the whole length of the canal in two sections–the first half with friends in May, 2012 and the second half in September, 2013. I also walked or rode a local section of the canal nearly every day for 18 months, so I’ve seen it in all seasons and conditions.I wanted to capture some tips and recommendations about cycling the canal. Here they are:</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>If you can choose, ride from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. This enables you to start in a city, and end at the beach, which is a satisfying way to finish a long ride. Though you’ll barely notice it, the canal runs mostly in <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locks_on_the_Canal_du_Midi#Profile\">a very gradual downward slope</a> as it winds toward the coast. Also, the prevailing winds in the region are westerly and, especially in the winter, can be quite strong. Riding all day into a strong wind is torturous.</li>\n  <li>The first 50 km of the tow path out of Toulouse are paved. Similarly, the final 30 or 40 km near the coast are also paved. The rest of the path is hard-packed clay and gravel. It’s mostly broad and level, though there are less-traveled sections with prominent tree roots and overgrowth. Weather is also a factor. We rode one section near Carcassonne in a downpour, and the clay of the tow path became a nearly-impassable trail of mud. We eventually had to circumvent a short section of the path and ride on a nearby road.</li>\n  <li>There are <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locks_on_the_Canal_du_Midi\">91 locks</a> along the canal, and most of them are operated by a lock-keeper who lives in an inevitably charming and snug house beside the lock. A few of them operate stores or restaurants out of their homes. More importantly, if you have an emergency, they’re often the closest source of help.</li>\n  <li>We averaged about 40 km a day, at about 12 km an hour. We’re not particularly experienced cyclists, and we weren’t in any rush. We’d stop for coffee and long, three-course lunches. That meant that we might get underway at 9:30am and easily be done for the day by 4:00pm. With more vigour and urgency, you could obviously do the whole trip in just three or four days, as some of our Germanic fellow riders did.</li>\n  <li>Buy <a href=\"http://www.amazon.com/Cycling-Canal-Midi-southern-Toulouse-ebook/dp/B00A6O39WG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1388547233&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=canal+du+midi\">this book</a>. It’s up-to-date, detailed and very readable. Don’t, under any circumstances, buy <a href=\"http://www.amazon.co.uk/Biking-along-Canal-du-Midi/dp/2744907383/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1388547740&amp;sr=8-27&amp;keywords=canal+du+midi\">this book</a>. It is so poorly translated that it’s basically incomprehensible.</li>\n  <li>The canal is full of fascinating feats of engineering. There’s <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malpas_Tunnel\">the Malpass Tunnel</a>, the first canal tunnel in Europe. There’s also a series of aqueducts, bridges where the canal crosses a river. It’s a bit head-wrecking to consider being on a boat in a canal on a bridge crossing a river.</li>\n  <li>The canal is lined with more than 40,000 plane trees that lend it so much of its shade and dappled atmosphere. Sadly, these trees have contracted a water-borne fungus, and must all be cut down and replaced with a disease-resistant strain. This process is already well underway, and the bare sections of the canal were hot and bumpy (from the extracted roots, I imagine). Once the local authority has pulled the trees out from the whole canal, the waterway will lose a lot of its charm. If you’re thinking of riding the canal, do it soon.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><img src=\"http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3762/11678957335_4e033b5f9c_b.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"/></p>\n<p><em>Trees being cut along the canal.</em></p>\n<p>Here are some geographically-specific tips:</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>The canal technically ends at <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marseillan,_H%C3%A9rault\">Marseillan</a>, but I recommend riding the extra 15 km or so along the beach to the charming seaside town of Sète. Sète is sometimes called “the Venice of France” because it’s built on a series of canals.&nbsp;That coastal ride is unshaded, so it can be a sweaty chore at the end of a long day, but there are cafes along the beach where you can stop for a drink.</li>\n  <li>If you finish your day in <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castelnaudary\">Castelnaudary</a>, be sure to have some<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassoulet\">cassoulet</a>. You’re in the birthplace of the dish.</li>\n  <li>In Beziers, we stayed at <a href=\"http://www.raissac.com/\">Chateau Raissac</a>, an extraordinary, art-filled manor house on beautiful grounds. We had to ride an extra 5 km off the canal to get there, but it was worth it.</li>\n  <li>There are a number of towns along the canal, so unless it’s the off-season, finding food and accommodation isn’t too difficult. Wine tastings are sparser, though. There is a charming winery at<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventenac\">Ventenac</a> that I’d recommend.</li>\n  <li>We lived in <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argeliers\">Argeliers</a>, a small village that abuts the canal. There’s a charming bar and restaurant called <a href=\"http://lechatquipeche.eu/\">Le &nbsp;Chat Qui Pêche</a> beside a beautiful 18th century stone bridge where you should stop and have a drink.</li>\n  <li>Just down the road from us is the absurdly-quaint village of <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Somail\">Le Somail</a>, which features great eating along the canal and <a href=\"http://www.le-trouve-tout-du-livre.fr/c/portal/layout?p_l_id=PUB.1022.1\">a world-famous used bookstore</a>.</li>\n</ol>\n</html>",

      "body": "When a car can individually brake wheels, adjust throttle, monitor g-forces and wheel slippage and adjust driver inputs as a result... we are already well on the way to automated vehicles. I perfectly understand the fear of \"the gov't/a hacker may take control and do what they wish with me/my family\", so while automated piloting of the vehicle is very attractive, it must come with a retention of absolute control along with a means of manual piloting, in order to gain mainstream acceptance... IMO",

      "body": "<html>\n<p>Robot cars are having a moment. They’re&nbsp;approaching the Peak of Inflated Expectations on the venerable Gartner Hype Cycle (though Gartner <a href=\"http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3114217\">had them peaking</a> in August, 2015). &nbsp;I was curious to understand the current state of public opinion on the topic of autonomous vehicles. I regularly see studies, polls and surveys come out, but haven’t seen them collected in one place. Plus, south of the border, it’s election season.Here is a summary of the&nbsp;credible surveys of the public I could find on the topic of autonomous vehicles:</p>\n<ol>\n  <li><a href=\"http://www.umich.edu/~umtriswt/PDF/SWT-2016-8_Abstract_English.pdf\">A study (PDF)</a> by the University of Michigan found that&nbsp;43.8% of drivers&nbsp;said they didn’t want any automation at all in their next vehicles. 95% of drivers said that they would still want access to a steering wheel and other controls even if their vehicle was automated.</li>\n  <li><a href=\"http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/volvo-survey-attitudes-to-self-driving-cars/\">68% of Americans surveyed</a> by Volvo said driving a car manually is a “luxury that should be preserved”.</li>\n  <li>The Pew Research Center found that <a href=\"http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/04/17/us-views-of-technology-and-the-future/\">48% of those surveyed</a>would like to take a ride in an autonomous car, more than would eat meat grown in a lab (20%) or augment their brain with an implant&nbsp;(26%).</li>\n  <li><a href=\"http://www.kpmg.com/US/en/IssuesAndInsights/ArticlesPublications/Documents/self-driving-cars-are-we-ready.pdf\">A focus group run by KPMG (PDF)</a> found that women were slightly more receptive to autonomous vehicles than men, with women rating their willingness to ride in a self-driving car at 6.5/10, and men putting their willingness at 6/10.</li>\n  <li><a href=\"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1510.03346.pdf\">A study (PDF)</a> in the journal <em>Science</em> entitled “The social dilemma of autonomous vehicles”, found that “76% of participants thought that it would be more moral for autonomous vehicles to sacrifice one passenger, rather than kill ten pedestrians”. In the same study, respondents were asked to indicate how likely they would be to buy an autonomous vehicle programmed to minimize casualties (instead, sacrificing themselves and other family members in the car) and how likely they would be to buy an autonomous vehicle programmed to prioritize protecting its passengers, even if it meant killing 10 or 20 pedestrians. 50% said they would buy the self-preserving model, while only 19% said they’d buy the former.</li>\n  <li><a href=\"https://blog.gfk.com/2015/01/safety-first-the-road-to-self-drive/\">A GfK survey</a> of 5,800 consumers in six countries found that people identified safety as the top benefit of self-driving cars. Other benefits, given equal weight by respondents, were reduced costs, easier parking and more free time.</li>\n  <li>An <a href=\"http://newsroom.aaa.com/2016/03/three-quarters-of-americans-afraid-to-ride-in-a-self-driving-vehicle/\">American Automobile Association (AAA) survey</a> showed that 75% of respondents would be afraid to trust a self-driving car to drive itself with them in it. Women (81%) were less trustworthy than men (67%), and baby boomers (82%) were less trustworthy than younger generations (69%). One does wonder what purpose the AAA will serve once the robot cars takeover, but that’s a consideration for another time.</li>\n  <li>Bucking the trend,&nbsp;AlixPartners found that <a href=\"http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-06-30/three-quarters-of-u-s-drivers-say-they-d-cede-wheel-to-robot\">73% of respondents </a>would be willing to cede all driving activity to a self-driving vehicle. The company’s, head of the consulting firm’s automotive practice, Mark Wakefield, said that “autonomous driving increases the economic utility of the commuter.” That’s a worrying phrase, isn’t it?&nbsp;Is he imagining&nbsp;“drivers” moonlighting in call centres while being carried to their day job.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Of all the studies I looked at, only one demonstrated a clear majority of people ready to jump into a fully-autonomous vehicle. The rest show a clear reluctance to give up control, with concerns focusing on safety and cost being the primary stated barriers.</p>\n</html>",
