| body | I'm just posting the milestone BJJ experiences for the time being, as for now and into the near future, it's primarily just more knuckling down and getting many more repetitions of the same group of lessons in, trying to bring the fluency up a bit more. But yeah, Combatives stripe 3! Getting there, slowly but surely. My partner and I had a 5 week training hiatus between stripe 2 and 3, as we were both demolished by the flu, which also developed a secondary bacterial lung infection, and we both had to get on a reasonably heavy dose of antibiotics to prevent pneumonia developing. We were intensely sick for about 1 week each, but the recovery took another 3-4 weeks, lots of coughing/wheezing, low energy/lethargy, mental fog, and just that general post-antibiotic weirdness that you get. But we've been back on the BJJ horse for 2 weeks now and have our momentum back. I had an interesting thought about the long journey of BJJ while we had that period away from training due to sickness, being that; BJJ is such a giant, almost infinite activity to take on, where progress is very slow, where the knowledge and skill set is so vast and complex that it takes many years of consistent training to even come close to considering yourself a competent BJJ practitioner. With that known, I think every progress milestone you hit, be it a new stripe, a new belt, or just moving up to the next category of classes in your academy, that milestone isn't just symbolically representative of the section of your BJJ journey which you conquered, but also every other obstacle in your life which you successfully dealt with during that period, in order to allow yourself to continually, consistently turn up to training, and keep chipping away at this goal, during good times and bad. It represents the sicknesses and infections you overcame, career and social obligations, relationship breakdowns, financial challenges, transport issues, bad weather, mental health issues, anything and everything which can and does happen to people between BJJ milestones, that new stripe or belt or medal or class represents every obstacle you overcame in order to keep on training, and keep on moving forward. Some food for thought anyway. Just keep turning up! - David |

| body | Nice! Yeah I'll definitely consider competing again at some point. This is my third pass at BJJ training, starting from the start again haha. I used to compete way back in my early 20's (2001-2004), but at 37 I'm a bit more apprehensive to get my body mangled. I defeinitly need to refine my grasp of the basic a bit more before I consider anything extra I think. |

| body | It's been a long time between posts, partially because I lost track of where I was up to with which lesson I had written about, partially because it gets kind of boring for both you and me to keep going over the same lessons again, and partially just because life sometimes gets in the way of Jiu Jitsu; sickness, injury, events, and committments etc. It's winter here in Australia at the moment, which as you know knocks everyone's immune systems around and we pick up bugs here and there. Anyways, we've kept on gradually chipping away at the Combatives curriculum in the meantime, and last Friday we got our second stripe! It always feels good doing that ritual, getting called out from the line of students up to the instructor to a round of applause, a stripe, handshake, hugs and congrats from the instructor, and another round of applause as you return to the line. I'm very proud of my partner for reaching this milestone too, she has thrown herself wholeheartedly into the long term task of learning BJJ, and she's loving it too! She's said that she's noticed her strength and balance has improved at yoga and pilates classes as a result of training BJJ. Looking forward to the journey towards the next milestone. Cheers! - David |

| body | The rear takedown indicator (in this drill), is clinching with your opponent, and they try to push your head down into a guillotine choke. You stand up straight and look upward, pushing your head up behind their (attempted) guillotine-ing arm, so that they are sort of bent forward a little bit. You then circle around to the rear clinch. There's a particular angle for the rear clinch, as it's not standing side-on, and it's not standing directly behind, but rather in between those two options. Your shoulder/neck/side of your head should lock nicely into the shape of the side of their hip and lower back. We usually do a few practice set-ups of the takedown itself before actually doing the full thing, just to get familiar with the action of going down. But yeah, there's a small set-up step, and then the other leg extends straight and you slap the sole of that foot against the heel of your opponent, then squat down on your set-up step leg, and with a 'bungee-cord' action, give your opponent a firm yank around their waist before letting go and tucking your arms in to your chest as they go down, and follow them over with your outer leg so that you land in modified mount. The elevator sweep has two variations (in Combatives); standard, and headlock. I understand the general principles of this movement reasonably well, as being that the indicator for it is if you have a 'stacker' in your closed guard, and they stack by getting up on one leg, they are accordingly quite top-heavy, meaning their legs are comparatively light. So you control their arm on the opposite side to their stacking leg, get your hips out to that side, hook your foot underneath their stacking knee, get and arm underhook on that same side, and then lift and chop! The same principles apply with the headlock variation, except that rather than securing their arm in tight so that you can roll over the top of it, given that that arm is now up around your neck (and their elbow is also acting as a base support for them against the ground), you slide their elbow north, so that they get turned over with their arm up above their head. It was a good lesson, I just had a bit of mental fog for it so I was on autopilot a little bit, but I learned something from going over it all again :) Cheers, - David |

| body | Third time I've done this lesson now, and it's sinking in well. I don't feel that there are many new details to take note of with the clinches, I think it's more a matter of just repetitions; doing it enough times so that it becomes fast and reflexive. I enjoy training the take the back from the mount sequence, as it's pretty fun! The indicator being that your opponent starts to turn to their side from underneath your mount, for the purposes of getting onto their knees. When they turn to their side, you swicth to modified mount, by sliding your knee up behind their back, and bringing up your other leg, so that your foot is flat on the ground, your heel next to their abdomen. Then as they roll up to their knees, you put your hands on the ground to support your weight, and insert your hooks (feet), push your hips south, so that they're above their hips, and then attain the over-under grip (under grabs over) with your hands. You then roll to either the strong side ('over' arm on the bottom), or weak side ('under' arm on the bottom), and apply the rear naked choke. I find that I can apply the rear naked choke quite quickly and effectively with my right arm as the choking arm, but with my left arm as the choking arm, I find the lock up behind the head is more congested and awkward and slow to set up for some reason, I haven't quite worked out why yet, but it's always been the case. Probably just another case of 'more-reps-needed'! Cheers, - David |

| body | We've done the leg hook takedown/trap and rolls lesson a couple of times now, and there wasn't much to report about it really. All good with the trap and rolls, and I got the leg hook takedown happening a bit more like one smooth motion rather than a step-by-step motion. It's almost like you spin a full 180 degrees with your opponent when you do it right. I got a good tip on my head placement on their chest as well, being that my head should be against the side of their chest opposite to the side of the leg which I'm hooking, that way you get optimal leverage in the most useful direction for the takedown. The next lesson was a first time lesson at this academy, involving shooting for the clinch with an aggressive opponent approaching, being one throwing punches. The drill involves your opponent taking two steps towards you, and on the third attempting to punch, at which point you shoot in with your 'helmet' on (arms protecting head/face), and attain the clinch, and hold while they resist for a while. All good again for this one, no problems and pretty straight forward. The americana drills were cool, starting from the mount, you throw a few slaps to the face to bring their arms up, you then push one of their forearms to the ground using both of your hands, and body weight to push down. Then, the hand holding their wrist, you put that elbow on the ground, so that your elbow is right next to their neck, and your hand is gripping their wrist. Then with your other hand, palm facing up, go underneath their trapped arm, then turn your hand facing palm down once it's through and grab your own wrist, and now make sure both of your hands have thumbless grips. Put your forehead down on your own wrist, insert your leg hook on the opposite side to the armlock, then 'paint the floor' with the back of their hand, angling it south while simultaneously (slowly) lifting their elbow, but making sure the back of their wrist/hand stays connected to the floor. We practiced this on both sides/arms. There's a headlock variation of the americana too, where you're mounted again, but have them in a headlock. You feed their wrist to the hand you have behind their head, then insert your other hand underneath the same as before, palm up, insert, then palm down to grip your own wrist. Now go thumbless grips, and insert your leg hook, opposite side to the armlock again. You then loop your headlocking arm over their head and into the regular americana position, and apply in the same way again slowly. I really dig the americana as a submission, as it seems pretty easy/quick to lock up, an awesome one for self defence. Cheers, - David |

| body | Second time doing this lesson, and in the past, the double leg takedown has always been a movement/technique which I have never really done well or got the fluent hang of. I guess it's pretty dynamic, there's a lot to be mindful of, and accordingly many ways in which to do it wrong. The conservative opponent variation involves palm striking at your opponent on your way in. So it understandably takes a lot of practice/many repetitions to get the step in and strike, then protect your head/face and squat, then step in again between their feet and catch the back of their knees, as all of that is essentially just the set up for the takedown! haha. You then kneel on that front knee, the one stepped in between their legs and follow them down, not letting go of their legs, and your rear leg steps to the side, to help stabilise your position. Then, when it's safe/they're not bucking and writhing, you push their leg down to the ground on the side you are facing, and walk the leg you kneeled down on around so that you attain side mount. I need much more practice at all of these movements. I did better at the double underhook guard pass this time, and I think it was because the training partner I was with this time was more closely matched to my body dimensions; weight and height. It's my own personal issue, but I become distractingly concerned about crushing my partner when we practice movements like this if I'm significantly heavier than them, and/or if they can't support my weight for whatever reason. I tend to support my own weight in this case, but doing so isn't a part of the technique, and so I end up using one of my hands to support myself and it affects the effectiveness of the technique in some ways, and I'm also practicing doing it wrong essentially. It can't be helped really, but I'd rather not cause an injury or significant discomfort to my training partner than just recklessly go ahead regardless. By the end of the lesson I managed to put the whole movement together in a fairly smooth running sequence, from starting in their closed guard, to opening it with a palm strike, double underhooks, reaching across to their shoulder and driving my weight forward so my face is above theirs, then clocking my legs around while dipping my hips and lifting my chest and head, to allow their legs to fall to the side as I come around and attain modified side mount. Much work to be done, but enjoying the process. Cheers, - David |

"body": "\n\nSecond time doing this lesson, and in the past, the double leg takedown has always been a movement/technique which I have never really done well or got the fluent hang of. \n\nI did better at the double underhook guard pass this time, and I think it was because the training partner I was with this time was more closely matched to my body dimensions; weight and height. \nMuch work to be done, but enjoying the process.\nCheers,\n- David",

| body | We have gone over the standing headlock defence quite a few times, and the technique is always being refined by small details. My partner was really nailing it this time with precision though; when I hit the floor, I hit the floor with quite a bit of momentum, and I fell into the sweet spot, not squashing her leg or anything. It's awesome when you feel your partner nailing a technique like this, because you can feel the conviction with which it is executed, and you think "that one really got me! I couldn't have stopped that one if I tried". Taking the back from the guard involves quite a lot of steps to put the whole thing together. This technique is actually taught in 3 stages because there is so much to it, and is a fair bit to remember. The indicator is your opponent in your closed guard, putting their forearm across your throat and standing up on their feet, driving their weight forward to try to choke you with their forearm, and perhaps also punch you with their other arm. You turn your head towards the elbow of their choking arm to offer your neck some protection from the choke, block the punching arm, lift their weight back using your legs and hips, and now that their choking forearm is lighter, push it across to the side of their punching arm, lock up a Gable grip behind their neck, and direct their weight to that side with your legs. So you now have their head and their closest arm locked up inside your arms/grip, almost like an arm triangle. You then achieve a better side-on angle on their body (when safe to do so; when they aren't writhing and trying to escape), by putting your outer foot on the ground and sort of shuffling your hips around a bit. You then hug their neck tight, and pull up towards yourself, while simultaneously chopping their outer leg with your inner one (the one underneath them), and then bring your inner leg back up high, so that the inside of your knee is against their abdomen or chest area. Next, you grab a hold of their lat with your outer arm, tuck your inner arm in close, and with your weight resting on your shoulder, push off the ground with your toes to bring your bottom knee up, put your tucked arm/hand on the ground, and get your hooks (feet) in to begin securing the back mount. The final movements are getting your hips back/lower on their body, and getting the over/under grip (under grabs over). This is clearly another one which is a bit of a mess to describe in writing haha. It's a great technique though, and seems like it would be very difficult to counter or escape from for an untrained person. To writhe around and panic in this position would be extremely exhausting, and would yield very little benefit to you as well, as you have a person's entire body weight gripped tight onto one side of your upper body. It's really difficult to utilise power, gain momentum, or create any space at all from here, as one of your arms is pretty much useless, sticking straight out in front of your, glued to your own head, and it's almost like you are partially being choked too, depending on how tight that Gable grip is around your neck and arm. Cheers, - David |
