And don't even get me started on the church. Even in my college philosophy classes we were merely learning abut what oher people thought, and not how to apply logic and avoid fallacies. I had to look up and learn all this stuff by my own initiative. I am 30 now and most of my life I had no idea how to think. And I barely know anybody who can.",

Mind if I follow? \nI am also sick and tired of people all around me claming to have proofs and undeniable evidence of their beliefs... \n\nPersonally I think the whole world is a one big joke. I was a very hopeless case of a religious nutjob not so long ago. I used to believe some pretty fucked up shit. All the things that you said, I used to believe too at one point or another. But now I understand why I have been believeing this. And I understand why the rest of the world believes. But it still drives me nuts anytime they try to justify religion that I discovered to be nothing but bullshit. \nAnyway, thanks for posting. Nice to see that I'm not alone in this.\n\nAs for the concept of living forever, I guess it would work if eternity it was  divided into smaller fragments. Reincarnation is an example. But  i dislike the idea of having to learn everything from scratch every time. I think it would be cool to relive the life on this earth with all your memories from the past life.       "body": "Well, from a strictly logical standpoint, the fact alone that we came to be in the first place is an argument for reincarnation. Because if life happened once, than the precedent is set and so there is a chance that it could happen again, and also that it might have happened before.  It is not a proof, but it is a reason to consider reincarnation as a possibility. We have cyccles of life in nature. So maybe there is some bigger cycle.  There is no way for telling how would that work though. Without being able to apply some science, it is all guesswork from here. Altough I sometimes wish that reincarnatian and the idea of  karma was as popular as other religions. If people believed they could return here some day reincarnated in a poor family living in a slum, there's a chance they would be working to make the world a better place for everybody and not just for the rich. Just a thought :)",

If you read more about his story you can see that his only son was given him by God's promise. And also he was promised to have great nation from his son. So he trusted God will do something great.  When people are doing the same thing it's not always the same thing.  Even this story shows great love of God because he spared Abraham's son (although he tested his obediance) and he gave His own Son Jesus to save us as a sacrifice for our sins.       "body": "Okay, that was a bad pun.\n\nMy wife invited her friends over to our house some time ago. She wanted to know if I didn't mind that they were a Christian couple. I said that I wouldn't, but I had a feeling that this will be a bit awkward, since they know that I'm no longer a believer and I know that they know this, and they also will be aware of that... And so it was awkward. Anytime somebody said something abut the church, or some pastor that they knew I just kept quiet. I decided to just wait until somebody chnges the subject and hoped that thi will be over soon. But everywhere the elefant was sitting in the room. A very big elefant in a very small room. And when we were outside, the elefant was following us around. Somebody just had to say it. \n\nSo we're sitting by the table and finally talking about faith and why I think it's all a scam and why I quit after being such a zealous minister. And the guy starts to defend the faith stating all sorts of the usual bullshit. And at one point I stop him and ask him this question:\n\n\"What's going to happen to me now that I don't believe anymore?\"\n\n\"Well, you won't be with God when you die...\" - he muttered.\n\n\"So where will I be then?\"\n\n \"You know. In hell\"\n\n\"Why can't you just tell me straight that you believe that I will be suffering forever? Is that what you believe?\"\n\n\"Yes, I do.\"\n\n\"And what have I done to deserve this? Do you think this is justice? Does eternal torture look like mercy to you?\" \n\n\"Look, I didn't come up with this. It's what the bible says. I'm just teling you what the bible says!\"\n\n\"But it's you who is spreading this, not the bible. Do you have any proof that hell, or god exists? Or that he intends to put anybody in hell?\"\n\n\"I don't need proof! If you want proof, then go read what the bible says! And than decide for yourself if this is true!\"\n\nAnd I was dumbstruck. So much fucking and utter nonsense condensed in so few sentences. I could write a whole book tearing down just this one paragraph. This guy is in my house. And he's threatening me that his god will make me suffer. And than he refuses to give me any evidence that it's true. And then he points me to a book... He's suggesting that it only takes seeing something written down, to prove that this thing exists... I was speachless. I was aware that people this clueless exist, but it's always a marvel to encounter such a specimen and interact with it. To hear the words so offensively stupid being actually spoken in front of you by a person who actually takes it seriously. A person who seems educated and literate. \n\nI try to calm down and be reasonable about it. Of course if you could reason with a believer, he would seize being a believer. That's what Hugh Laurie said. And I know it's true, because it happened to me.\nI said to him: \n\"Listen, motherfucker. Do you know what faith is? It is feeling. A fucking EMOTION! It's a thing outside of your will that you cannot control. It's like hunger or sadness or a boner. You don't decide if you want to be sad, hungry or when you want to bang a bunch of teenage waitressess in the tits. Those things occur when certain conditions are met. You. Cannot. control. goddamn. feelings. \n\nYou cannot stop being hundry just by wanting it.\n\nYou cannot stop being sad on command.\n\nAnd you could not decide to keep your dick limp if some hot lass shoved your face between her tits.\n\nThe same is with faith. When certain conditions are present you either believe something or not. You cannot start believing in Santa Claus again. He really fucking said that.\n\nYou heard the same logic in Batman V Superman, and you probably facepalmed, shaked your head and laughed. And here this guy is using the same logic in real life and he means every word...  \n\nOh fuck my life. The people I have to deal with.\n\nSo I said to him:\n\"So why aren't you preparing for an incoming alien invasion? \n\n\"Wait, what?\"\n\n\" The alien invasion from a distant panet. You cannot prove that there arent any warmongering aliens hellbent on world domination, heading our way, so you better start worrying, because it is also a possibility.\"\n\nI almost expected him to think a little over this before replying, but it wasn't his thinking day apparently, as he immediatelly said:\n\"What? No! No! that is a very bad comparison! This is totally different! Those two scenarios are in no way similar! It's unfair! They would claim that Allah gave our land to them and they had the divine right to do what they did.\" \n\nI asked my friends \"If they really believed they had permission from Allah, would it make it okay?\"\n\n\"Of course it wouldn't be okay, \"They all said. \"That would be a horrible act and nothing ever would make it okay!\"\n\n\"Okay, so now take a similar sutuation from the Book of Joshua: God brought the Israelites to the promised land, but that land was already inhabited by many nations. God commanded his people to perform genocide, kill all men women and children and keep only the virgins for themselves.  And then take over all their possessions and land. \n\nSo, according tho the bible,  the Israelites believed they have permission from God to kill people and steal all their stuff.  Was that okay?\"\n\nI was struggling with this question myself and I had a real problem to make a clear judgment. That's why I wanted to hear what my friends will say.\n\nAnd I was shocked how quickly they started defending the Israelites and finding reasons upon reasons to justify their actions. They had no problem with killing women, children, unborn babies and enslaving little girls as sex slaves. \n\n\"If God told them to do it, they must have deserved it! Thay had to be a horrible nation! Good riddance!\"\n\n\"But what about the children and the babies? And the unborn ones?\" Were they also horrible people?\n\n\"They would surely become horrible people, if God had allowed them to grow up! It was just a matter of time!\"\n\nAnd then they started to look up scriptures for passages that would confirm that victims of that genocide had it coming.  They had no second thoughts, no doubts. They all believed that this genocide really happened, and they had no sympathy for the victims. Just because it was their God who did it. \n\nIt was than when I realised that our beliefs are not so much different from Muslim beliefs. The only reason is that we are not told anymore to kill in god's name, while they still do. \n\nBut I wanted to be sure and one day I asked a Christian mother, a wife of a pastor, what would she do if she was standing in Abraham's place. \n\n\"Imagine if you were there instead of Abraham, and God would ask you to kill your child and burn it's corpse. Would you do what Abraham did? Would you kill your baby or allowed somebody else do it, just because God told you so?\"\n\nAnd I could say she was thinking about it, but she wasn't able to say that she would not kill her child. \n\nThis situation made me pretty sure it was time to say goodbye to Jesus and faith and church and shit. \n\nChristains. Those who claim moral superiority over rest of the world. Boasting of their divine revelation about what is objectively and absolutely good and bad. \n\nAnd yet, they are not able to condemn holy wars, genocide, infanticide or even slavery.\n\nMy own wife, admitted that she supports what the Israelites did. I wanted to also ask her about what Abraham did, and if she would do the same. If we had a child, and God asked her to kill it. What would she do? \n\nI never asked her that question though. I'm too afraid she might actually answer. And I don't think I'm rady to face what would have to happen afterwards.\n\nRight now I'm just happy that we don't have any chidren. I'm so fucking relieved.",
