You have no control over the offence you will receive from people but you have all the control to be affected negatively or positively by it. Make a good decision to turn every offence to your advantage. You can't prevent a bird from flying over your head but you can prevent it from making its nest. Remove every bitterness from your heart. Bitterness retards physical, spiritual, psychological and social growth. Bitterness impedes breakthroughs. Bitterness shields you from favor. Kill bitterness because it is a killer. The best way to kill bitterness is to forgive people immediately they offend you. Offence, slandering, backbiting, betrayals, disappointments etc are all part of life. You can't control their happenings. Don't drink poison of bitterness and expect the offender to die. May the Lord heal your wounds and soothe your pains. May the Lord empower you to forgive anyone who has offended you to set yourself free in Jesus name. **Jesus is Lord** **Image source**: picturequotes.com

You may end up needing help from the people who are asking for your help today so help them. Life is like a moving wheel, sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down. Sometimes we destroy the bridges that we might need to help us cross back tomorrow. Sometimes we treat people as though there is never going to be tomorrow. We sometimes act as though we will never need help from any one. **Remember there's tomorrow.** Joseph helped the cupbearer in prison and later the cupbearer connected Joseph with Pharaoh. Imagine how Portiphar’s wife felt when she heard that Joseph was now the Governor of Egypt after she had falsely accused him. The brothers who sold Joseph away ended up being fed by him. Don't ever think of going to the extreme with your offenders, they might be rescuers tomorrow. Always remember there is tomorrow and it will surely come. The little help you give to people today, will profit you tomorrow. May the good Lord touch your heart to live your life as if there is tomorrow. **Amen** 😇🙏🏽 **Image source:** Pinterest.com

My house, my car, my children, my certificates, my job, my husband, my wife, my families, my clothes, my SHOE..... My ! My!! My !!! What is this life worth ? A man was informed about the departure of his father, but he tarried. When his father started smelling, their neighbors took his father to the mortuary for preservation. A week later, he went to the mortuary to see the corpse of his father. When he was about to enter the place, there was a poster placed at the entrance of the mortuary, of which no one can escape it. It read: “ WE WERE LIKE YOU BEFORE, BUT WE ARE HERE NOW. ” The young boy read it, but it didn't make any sense to him. He went inside, checked the corpse of his father, after a few minutes, he made his step out. As he was about to step outside, he saw another inscription placed on a strategic location, which no one will escape. It says: “ YOU WILL SOON BE LIKE US. ” This last word touched his stone heart and he repented from that moment. From that moment, he understood, Everything here on earth is like a dream, a vapor. Life itself is not real, as everything is temporal. You will soon be like those that were once Living , Eating , Sleeping , Walking , Talking , Laughing here on earth , but today ...... They're NO MORE. When he got to his father's mansion, there was nobody to talk to, his father left his shoes, clothes, money, bed, cars, EVERYTHING. As he was searching his father's wardrobes, he saw untouched brand new dollars, well packed and arranged, but the owner of the money was in the mortuary. The young boy remembered, “ WE WERE LIKE YOU BEFORE, BUT YOU WILL SOON JOIN US. ” He cried the more. You eat chicken with vegetables and fish, turkey, meat , fried rice, and drink wine today , but tomorrow, your flesh becomes a food for maggots. You drive a nice car today, but tomorrow, an ambulance drives you. You live in a mansion today, but tomorrow you live in burial ground. You sleep in a nice bed today, but tomorrow, you sleep inside the Grave ! What ? What ? ? What ? ? ? What is the approximate replacement for your soul ? You will lose everything if you die without GOD and without living for Him. Please, ruminate on this piece of post, reconcile with your creator, and have a positive change of heart, so that your living on earth shall be to God's Glory and at the end of your sojourning on earth, you will not end in oblivion. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE. “ Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we shall return. ”_ *PLEASE SHARE AS RECEIVED TO SAVE A SOUL TODAY.*

Tim Swanson is the director of research at Post Oak Labs, a U.S.-based technology advisory firm, and the former director of research at distributed ledger technology consortium R3. The following article is an exclusive contribution to CoinDesk's 2017 in Review series. Imagine a parallel universe in which the U.S. economy could only grow at $50 every 10 minutes generating a mere $2.6 million of output per annum. That due to a hard-coded economic planning computer program, every four years the income its inhabitants collectively generated divided in half. Such that in year nine, its output shrank and was $12.50 every 10 minutes or $657,000 a year. That is to say, irrespective of how productive and skilled the labor force became or how large the labor force grew, the productive output in the U.S remained fixed and static with the only change (downward in this case) occurring just once every four years. How many people would volunteer to live and work in that "Upside Down" world? This situation effectively mirrors the static, internal economy of bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies. For instance, with proof-of-work networks like bitcoin, the marginal productivity of labor is zero. It does not matter how many more units of labor are added to the income generation (mining) process as the network will always produce the same amount of economic output. Today, after nearly nine years of operation, the bitcoin network – better referred to as Bitcoinland – generates 12.5 bitcoins roughly every 10 minutes. Irrespective of external economic conditions, of demand, the Bitcoinland economy will generate about 657,000 bitcoins per year in its third epoch. While comparisons with aggregate measurements like GDP and money supplies may be an imperfect analogy, the fact that economic expansion as measured in output can – with the exception of a fork and rule change – never change in bitcoin due to its inelastic coin supply is arguably detrimental to its unit of account. The purposefully planned sameness is often extolled as a "feature not a bug," and many cryptocurrency enthusiasts like to daydream for when regulators and financial institutions of our own world disappear, eaten up by grey goo nanites funded by bitcoins. But before bitcoiners can reach their Upside Down nirvana state, they need to resolve the underlying omnipresent economic calculation challenge facing their security system and labor force. The phenomenon is simple to describe: virtually no participant in Bitcoinland conducts economic calculations (such as pricing) for any goods or services in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. There are many reasons for this, including chronic volatility. ![image.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP197YaEfaLEpjFgisvw52Lp2FQCagffYdJ3KeQHt7hrq/image.png) Courtesy of J.P. Koning Or increasingly high ($10+) transaction fees that result in hemorrhaging of merchants (even their very own Cobra Commander acknowledges this issue). But for this article, let's put aside the typical discussion of payments and merchants and instead focus on labor. Labor force If Bitcoinland is viewed as its own sovereign (virtual) nation-state, the only wages any native participant receives in return for any kind of service rendered is what miners are paid to solve and "vote" on a benign problem about once every 10 minutes. From the perspective of the network: developers, maintainers, administrators, enthusiasts, Twitter sock puppets, meme artisans, flame war veterans, self-appointed thought leaders, pumpers, hat wearers, etc., are all viewed as foreign third parties and can only receive bitcoins after they are first minted by the miners. Much like multinational corporations (MNC) with large overseas operations, miners of cryptocurrency networks as a whole do not measure the income they receive in terms of bitcoins (or other discrete cryptocurrencies), but instead they measure their income in terms of "fiat" from foreign financial markets, specifically converting bitcoins into the local fiat currency where their mining operation physically resides. However, unlike MNCs that eventually repatriate some or all of their capital back to their headquarters, aside from a recycling of coins into ICOs, most cryptocurrency-focused companies are still dependent on what amounts to foreign domestic income (FDI), regular injections of foreign capital from venture firms in order to grow or even measure enterprise valuations. Miners do this because the unit of account for fiat currency is typically stable and liquid, such that they can pay wages to their employees, pay rent, electrical costs, property taxes, etc. There are exceptions to stability, such as planned economies of Venezuela and Zimbabwe which have suffered from years of political chaos, but in general, most developed countries and even developing countries have relatively stable domestic currencies relative to Bitcoinland. And because bitcoin is still not used as a unit of account, its labor force (miners), rely on a third-party reference data in order to conduct all economic calculations. That is to say, in order for Bob the miner to accurately calculate if he should increase or decrease consumption (and investment) of capital, or to measure whether his mining operation is profitable, Bob projects future revenue based on a unit of account that is stable, in this case, currency from foreign capital markets. During the Cold War there was a joke in academia: that the Soviet Union would conquer the world with the exception of New Zealand (other versions used Switzerland as the cut-out). New Zealand would be left alone because the Politburo needed a functioning market so that the Soviets could know what the market prices were for goods and services. While Bitcoinland may be attracting large sums of foreign capital, miners continually still need very liquid over-the-counter (OTC) and spot exchanges denominated in foreign currencies because it is with these foreign currencies that they pay their bills. In this case, despite their own defects and problems, the U.S., eurozone, Japan, South Korea, China and several other countries effectively stand in for "New Zealand," such that the national currencies and prices in these countries reflect dynamic economic conditions that bitcoin miners can use as reference rates in their capital consumption projections. Final remarks In 2018, just as the past nine years, miners will still depend on foreign financial markets for both stable pricing and liquidity. If the existing traditional financial markets became chaotic and unstable, miners would be unable to rationally plan and allocate for future investments. For instance, the unseen costs of hash generation for a hypothetically stable $20,000 bitcoin would be about $13 billion in capital consumed by miners in their rent-seeking race. And that is just one proof-of-work coin. If there were dramatic bouts of volatility, or even an extended bear market, this could result in bankruptcies like CoinTerra, HashFast or KnC previously went through, though that is beyond the speculation of this article. Ironically, despite all the bluster, because cryptocurrency ecosystems lack a circular flow of income, they will still be dependent on the very financial system they vilify for daily support and stability. And while there have been many "stablecoin" projects announced and launched over the past year, nearly all of them are not only dependent on commercial bank accounts, but also on the economic stability of a specific economic region they aim to serve. Guess what set of entities provides that type of relative stability? Ideological enthusiasts will likely resort to whataboutisms and respond by bitcoinsplaining: how dirty filthy statists will censor your virtuous darknet market transactions and that maintaining proof-of-work networks is worth any cost to the environment! But again, that is for a snarky article on a different day. Empirically with proof-of-work-based blockchains, the labor force and the liquidity providers all still depend on functional, mature foreign capital markets in order to convert their coins into real money. Perhaps this will change as more hedging products, courtesy again of foreign financial markets, are brought online. While the traditional financial markets will continue to exist and grow without having to rely on cryptocurrencies for rationally pricing domestic economic activity, in 2018, as in years prior, Bitcoinland is still fully dependent on the stability of foreign economies providing liquidity and pricing data to the endogenous labor force of bitcoin. That due to a hard-coded economic planning computer program, every four years the income its inhabitants collectively generated divided in half. Such that in year nine, its output shrank and was $12.50 every 10 minutes or $657,000 a year.\n\nThat is to say, irrespective of how productive and skilled the labor force became or how large the labor force grew, the productive output in the U.S remained fixed and static with the only change (downward in this case) occurring just once every four years.\n\nHow many people would volunteer to live and work in that \"Upside Down\" world?\n\nThis situation effectively mirrors the static, internal economy of bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies.\n\nFor instance, with proof-of-work networks like bitcoin, the marginal productivity of labor is zero. It does not matter how many more units of labor are added to the income generation (mining) process as the network will always produce the same amount of economic output.\n\nToday, after nearly nine years of operation, the bitcoin network – better referred to as Bitcoinland – generates 12.5 bitcoins roughly every 10 minutes. Irrespective of external economic conditions, of demand, the Bitcoinland economy will generate about 657,000 bitcoins per year in its third epoch.\n\nWhile comparisons with aggregate measurements like GDP and money supplies may be an imperfect analogy, the fact that economic expansion as measured in output can – with the exception of a fork and rule change – never change in bitcoin due to its inelastic coin supply is arguably detrimental to its unit of account.\n\nThe purposefully planned sameness is often extolled as a \"feature not a bug,\" and many cryptocurrency enthusiasts like to daydream for when regulators and financial institutions of our own world disappear, eaten up by grey goo nanites funded by bitcoins.\n\nBut before bitcoiners can reach their Upside Down nirvana state, they need to resolve the underlying omnipresent economic calculation challenge facing their security system and labor force.\n\nThe phenomenon is simple to describe: virtually no participant in Bitcoinland conducts economic calculations (such as pricing) for any goods or services in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. There are many reasons for this, including chronic volatility.\n\n![image.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP197YaEfaLEpjFgisvw52Lp2FQCagffYdJ3KeQHt7hrq/image.png)\n\nCourtesy of J.P. Koning\nOr increasingly high ($10+) transaction fees that result in hemorrhaging of merchants (even their very own Cobra Commander acknowledges this issue).\n\nBut for this article, let's put aside the typical discussion of payments and merchants and instead focus on labor.\n\nLabor force\nIf Bitcoinland is viewed as its own sovereign (virtual) nation-state, the only wages any native participant receives in return for any kind of service rendered is what miners are paid to solve and \"vote\" on a benign problem about once every 10 minutes.\n\nFrom the perspective of the network: developers, maintainers, administrators, enthusiasts, Twitter sock puppets, meme artisans, flame war veterans, self-appointed thought leaders, pumpers, hat wearers, etc., are all viewed as foreign third parties and can only receive bitcoins after they are first minted by the miners.\n\nMuch like multinational corporations (MNC) with large overseas operations, miners of cryptocurrency networks as a whole do not measure the income they receive in terms of bitcoins (or other discrete cryptocurrencies), but instead they measure their income in terms of \"fiat\" from foreign financial markets, specifically converting bitcoins into the local fiat currency where their mining operation physically resides.\n\nHowever, unlike MNCs that eventually repatriate some or all of their capital back to their headquarters, aside from a recycling of coins into ICOs, most cryptocurrency-focused companies are still dependent on what amounts to foreign domestic income (FDI), regular injections of foreign capital from venture firms in order to grow or even measure enterprise valuations.\n\nMiners do this because the unit of account for fiat currency is typically stable and liquid, such that they can pay wages to their employees, pay rent, electrical costs, property taxes, etc. There are exceptions to stability, such as planned economies of Venezuela and Zimbabwe which have suffered from years of political chaos, but in general, most developed countries and even developing countries have relatively stable domestic currencies relative to Bitcoinland.\n\nAnd because bitcoin is still not used as a unit of account, its labor force (miners), rely on a third-party reference data in order to conduct all economic calculations. However, since then, two other coins have also been “forked” from Bitcoin: Bitcoin Gold (October 2017) and Bitcoin Diamond (November 2017). Most people are still wondering what these forks are, how they happen, and how one can profit from them. Here’s my take on all of this. What the hell is a Bitcoin fork? We discussed Bitcoin forks back when Bitcoin Cash was just coming out. If you want the full explanation, you can read the original post. If you want the quick and dirty explanation, keep on reading this post. A fork is basically an alteration of the current Bitcoin code (or protocol). It means someone is changing the rules. Imagine you’re playing a game with thousands of people from all around the world and then someone says, “Let’s change the rules.” Normally, for the game to work properly, everyone needs to agree on the rules being changed. If that happens, then the change is implemented and everything continues as normal. If there isn’t a large consensus about the change, two versions of the game will be created (one with the old rules and one with the new rules)—in other words, there will be a fork in the game. The same can happen with Bitcoin’s code. Generally speaking, when a fork happens, you’ll have an “original Bitcoin” and a “new Bitcoin.” For example, Bitcoin Cash changed the block size from 1 MB to 8 MB so more transactions could be processed with each block. There were those who supported this change and switched to a new coin called Bitcoin Cash (or Bcash), and there were those who decided to stay with the original rules and keep using the original Bitcoin. Of course, this is a very simplified explanation of forks—not all forks are created equal. There are soft forks, which allow the new rules to play well with the old rules, and there are hard forks, which don’t allow this and create a totally different coin. All of the Bitcoin forks you’re hearing about lately are actually hard forks. Why should I even care about a fork? Great question! There are several reasons you should care about a fork: You may want to switch over to the new rules and the new coin because you think it’s better than using the original Bitcoin. The fork could have an impact on the Bitcoin community, Bitcoin’s adoption, and even Bitcoin’s price (we’ll get to that later on). You may want to profit from the fork by selling the new coins that are delivered to every Bitcoin holder. Wait, what? I get free coins? Yes. Let’s go back to our game analogy. Imagine your game has been running for a very long time, and you’ve managed to accumulate a considerable amount of points in it. Now someone wants to change the rules but doesn’t want everybody to lose their points, so the new game will start at a certain point in time, and everyone will have the same amount of points they accumulated up until that point. If, for example, you had 150 points in the original game, you could switch to the new game and still have 150 points. You could also play both games in parallel and have 150 points in each. Now let’s see how this works with Bitcoin. When a fork occurs, the people who decide on forking Bitcoin say, “Look, we don’t like the original rules—we want to create new rules. So starting from block number 453,342 (for example), we’ll change to the new rules.” Anyone who had Bitcoins at the time of the fork will now have two Bitcoins: the original one and the new one. You can decide which one to use, or you can even use both. If for example, you have 1 Bitcoin in your possession when the fork occurs, you’ll still have that 1 Bitcoin, but you’ll also be able to claim 1 “new Bitcoin” on the network that’s running the “new Bitcoin rules” (since that coin didn’t start out from scratch and is continuing the original Bitcoin’s history). It can get a bit confusing, but the main point to remember is this: When a Bitcoin fork occurs, anyone holding any amount of Bitcoins will get the same amount of the new currency as well. This doesn’t happen automatically; you do need to claim these coins, but each new coin has a different claiming mechanism, and we won’t be able to cover them all. Once you claim your new coins, you can then hold on to them or sell them if they’re being traded on an exchange. This means that you can basically generate money for nothing; all you did was claim coins from thin air and sell them on an exchange. Easy money! Or is it? The dangers of Bitcoin forks When the forking trend started out with Bitcoin Cash, it seemed that the fork was a legitimate way of expressing discontent with the road Bitcoin was taking (hence a fork in the road). However, it seems like the more recent forks are pretty similar to each other, and the main reason for creating them has more to do with marketing than actual ideology. If someone thinks they can create a better coin than Bitcoin, they can create a brand new altcoin—there’s no need to create a Bitcoin clone. Devs decide to fork Bitcoin for three main reasons (in my opinion, at least): Marketing buzz: Bitcoin forks are the new ICOs. Everyone is looking to get free coins, so people are actively looking for information (you’re reading this article, aren’t you?). What better way to get eyes on your project without a lot of work? Just say you’re forking Bitcoin and you’re done. Quick money for devs: Some of these forks aren’t really copies of Bitcoin’s history. The rules are changed in such a way that devs receive a large initial amount of the new coin, which they can then dump onto the market once the coin starts trading. Scams: Some forks are flat-out scams. There’s already been one reported scam: Bitcoin Platinum. Scams can come in the form of forks that are created to short Bitcoin’s price (e.g., Bitcoin Platinum) or something more elaborate such as forks that are created to steal users’ real Bitcoins in the process of claiming the new coin (e.g., Bitcoin Gold fake wallet). As you can see, claiming coins from a fork entails a considerable amount of risk from the user’s side. How to safely claim coins from a fork First, I’d suggest reading a bit about the project. Find out who the developers are, what their track record is, how far along they are in their road map, what have other publications written about them, and the like. If all that makes sense to you, then perhaps the fork is indeed legit. However, even if a fork is legit, it doesn’t mean it’s worth going through the hassle of claiming its coins. The claiming process is usually complicated, and you risk losing your coins if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. Say you’re holding 0.5 Bitcoins, and you’re eligible for 0.5 Bitcoin Gold. I’m not sure the immediate profit is worth the risk. This is, of course, a personal decision you should make. For example, one of the most important things that a forked coin has to implement is something called replay protection. It basically means that the network will be able to separate the new coin from the original one and not accidentally send the original one to the new coin address when claiming the forked coin. If, in the end, you decide you want to claim your coins, I suggest that you follow guides only from well-known wallets (i.e., TREZOR, Ledger, etc.) or credited publications. Keep in mind that in the end, it’s your money, and no publication will be able to take responsibility if you do something wrong along the way—even if they accidentally published misinformation (as we unfortunately once did in the past). What I’m trying to say is that it’s a risky business. Make sure to understand the process and make your own choices. If you do decide to claim forked coins you need to make sure your Bitcoins are in a wallet that allows you access to the private keys. This means you need to get your Bitcoins off exchanges and other web wallets before the fork occurs. If you don’t have access to your private keys you won’t be able to extract the forked coin. Once the fork occurs you’ll need to do two things: Send your Bitcoins to a new wallet with a different private key Upload your old private key to a wallet that supports the forked coin Since each fork is different it’s hard to say which wallet will support each fork. Usually the official fork site will display the wallets and exchanges that support it. If you leave your coins on an exchange that supports the fork there’s a good chance you can avoid extracting the coins yourself and that the exchange will do it for you, however you are basically at their mercy. Remember, the one rule you should always follow before trying to claim any coins is to move your Bitcoins to a new wallet with a new seed phrase. This move will reduce the chances of you losing your Bitcoin to almost zero. Upcoming Bitcoin forks for 2018 Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s review the upcoming Bitcoin forks for 2018. Super Bitcoin (SBTC) Fork Date: 12/12/2017 — Block 498,888 Changes from original protocol: smart contracts, Lightning Network, zero-knowledge proofs, 8 MB block size Distribution method: 1 BTC = 1 SBTC Super Bitcoin aims to “make Bitcoin great again,” although the developers accept the idea as an experiment. It incorporates the best proposals from the Bitcoin community to see how all the forefront technologies combine. BitcoinX (BCX) Fork Date: 12/12/2017 — Block 498,888 Changes from original protocol: combining zero-knowledge proof, smart contract, DPOS consensus, crosschain technology data, SegWit, Lightning Network Distribution method: 1BTC = 10,000 BCT BitcoinX is designed to release the full potential of Bitcoin in a scalable way for the future. By combining speed, smart contracts, and privacy, the development team is looking to build a cryptocurrency to suit modern society. Lightning Bitcoin (LBTC) Fork Date: 18/12/2017 — Block 499,999 Changes from original protocol: DPoS Consensus, three-second block time, 2 MB block size, no difficulty adjustment, smart contracts Distribution method: 1BTC = 1 LBTC Lightning Bitcoin pushes the boundaries of blockchain speed with bigger block sizes that are created in seconds rather than minutes. The addition of smart contracts and DPoS consensus should allow for a truly high-speed autonomous network. Bitcoin Platinum (BTP) Fork Date: 18/12/2017 — Block 500,000 Changes from original protocol: No pre-mine, 2.5-minute block time, SegWit2x, difficulty adjustment every block Distribution method: 1BTC = 1 BTP Bitcoin Platinum holds some pretty simple upgrades that make it slightly similar to Litecoin thanks to a 2.5-minute block time. The inclusion of the controversial SegWit2x could offer a more scalable solution to Bitcoin Legacy. However, reports of a scam are haunting Bitcoin Platinum. Bitcoin God (GOD) Fork Date: 25/12/2017 — Block 501,225 Changes from original protocol: no pre-mine, proof of stake, smart contracts, Lightning Network, large block size Distribution method: 1 BTC = 1 GOD Some details are still to be confirmed for Bitcoin God, but the branding is rather catchy. Proof of stake, smart contracts, and Lightning Network will make for an interesting change to the usual Bitcoin protocols. Bitcoin Cash Plus (BCP) Fork Date: 2/1/2018 — Block 501,407 Changes from original protocol: No pre-mine, SigHash, emergency difficulty adjustment (EDA), 8 MB block size Distribution method: 1BTC = 1 BCP Bitcoin Cash Plus throws more confusion into the Bitcoin industry. Is it that much different from the hotly tipped Bitcoin Cash? Zero pre-mining is a healthy way to start, but little information is available on its website. Bitcoin Uranium (BUM) Fork Date: Around 31/12/2017 — Block not yet announced Changes from original protocol: No pre-mine, one-minute block time, SegWit, unique address format Distribution method: 1BTC = 1 BUM Bitcoin Uranium wants to send rippling shockwaves through Bitcoin and reinitiate a truly decentralized currency. Quick block times combined with Equihash will allow GPU/CPU mining aims to open up mining to everybody. Bitcoin Atom (BCA) Fork Date: December 2017 — Block not yet announced Changes from original protocol: Hybrid consensus (PoS and PoW), Lightning Network, Hash time-locked contracts Distribution method: 1 BTC = 1 BCA Bitcoin Atom focuses its efforts on consensus modeling and off-chain transactions. A new form of combined Proof of Stake and Proof of Work may allow for increased security, while the Lightning Network creates “atomic swaps.” Bitcoin Silver (BTCS) Fork Date: December 2017 — Block not yet announced Changes from original protocol: 30-second block time, SegWit, every block difficulty adjustment Distribution method: 1BTC = 1 BTS Bitcoin Silver remains mysterious, especially given that there’s no working website or cohesive Github. Speedy block times mixed with SegWit is an interesting scaling idea, but we’ve yet to see any details that are set in stone. Additional forks can be found here. However, since then, two other coins have also been “forked” from Bitcoin: Bitcoin Gold (October 2017) and Bitcoin Diamond (November 2017). Most people are still wondering what these forks are, how they happen, and how one can profit from them. Here’s my take on all of this.\n\nWhat the hell is a Bitcoin fork?\nWe discussed Bitcoin forks back when Bitcoin Cash was just coming out. If you want the full explanation, you can read the original post. If you want the quick and dirty explanation, keep on reading this post.\n\nA fork is basically an alteration of the current Bitcoin code (or protocol). It means someone is changing the rules.\n\nImagine you’re playing a game with thousands of people from all around the world and then someone says, “Let’s change the rules.” Normally, for the game to work properly, everyone needs to agree on the rules being changed. If that happens, then the change is implemented and everything continues as normal.\n\nIf there isn’t a large consensus about the change, two versions of the game will be created (one with the old rules and one with the new rules)—in other words, there will be a fork in the game.\n\nThe same can happen with Bitcoin’s code. Generally speaking, when a fork happens, you’ll have an “original Bitcoin” and a “new Bitcoin.” For example, Bitcoin Cash changed the block size from 1 MB to 8 MB so more transactions could be processed with each block. There were those who supported this change and switched to a new coin called Bitcoin Cash (or Bcash), and there were those who decided to stay with the original rules and keep using the original Bitcoin.\n\nOf course, this is a very simplified explanation of forks—not all forks are created equal. There are soft forks, which allow the new rules to play well with the old rules, and there are hard forks, which don’t allow this and create a totally different coin. All of the Bitcoin forks you’re hearing about lately are actually hard forks.\n\nWhy should I even care about a fork?\nGreat question! There are several reasons you should care about a fork:\n\nYou may want to switch over to the new rules and the new coin because you think it’s better than using the original Bitcoin.\nThe fork could have an impact on the Bitcoin community, Bitcoin’s adoption, and even Bitcoin’s price (we’ll get to that later on).\nYou may want to profit from the fork by selling the new coins that are delivered to every Bitcoin holder.\nWait, what? I get free coins?\n\nYes. Let’s go back to our game analogy.\n\nImagine your game has been running for a very long time, and you’ve managed to accumulate a considerable amount of points in it. Now someone wants to change the rules but doesn’t want everybody to lose their points, so the new game will start at a certain point in time, and everyone will have the same amount of points they accumulated up until that point.\n\nIf, for example, you had 150 points in the original game, you could switch to the new game and still have 150 points. You could also play both games in parallel and have 150 points in each. Now let’s see how this works with Bitcoin.\n\nWhen a fork occurs, the people who decide on forking Bitcoin say, “Look, we don’t like the original rules—we want to create new rules. So starting from block number 453,342 (for example), we’ll change to the new rules.” Anyone who had Bitcoins at the time of the fork will now have two Bitcoins: the original one and the new one. You can decide which one to use, or you can even use both.\n\nIf for example, you have 1 Bitcoin in your possession when the fork occurs, you’ll still have that 1 Bitcoin, but you’ll also be able to claim 1 “new Bitcoin” on the network that’s running the “new Bitcoin rules” (since that coin didn’t start out from scratch and is continuing the original Bitcoin’s history).\n\nIt can get a bit confusing, but the main point to remember is this:\n\nWhen a Bitcoin fork occurs, anyone holding any amount of Bitcoins will get the same amount of the new currency as well. This doesn’t happen automatically; you do need to claim these coins, but each new coin has a different claiming mechanism, and we won’t be able to cover them all.\n\nOnce you claim your new coins, you can then hold on to them or sell them if they’re being traded on an exchange. This means that you can basically generate money for nothing; all you did was claim coins from thin air and sell them on an exchange.\n\nEasy money! Or is it?\n\nThe dangers of Bitcoin forks\nWhen the forking trend started out with Bitcoin Cash, it seemed that the fork was a legitimate way of expressing discontent with the road Bitcoin was taking (hence a fork in the road).\n\nHowever, it seems like the more recent forks are pretty similar to each other, and the main reason for creating them has more to do with marketing than actual ideology. If someone thinks they can create a better coin than Bitcoin, they can create a brand new altcoin—there’s no need to create a Bitcoin clone.\n\nDevs decide to fork Bitcoin for three main reasons (in my opinion, at least):\n\nMarketing buzz: Bitcoin forks are the new ICOs. Everyone is looking to get free coins, so people are actively looking for information (you’re reading this article, aren’t you?). What better way to get eyes on your project without a lot of work? Just say you’re forking Bitcoin and you’re done.\nQuick money for devs: Some of these forks aren’t really copies of Bitcoin’s history. The rules are changed in such a way that devs receive a large initial amount of the new coin, which they can then dump onto the market once the coin starts trading.\nScams: Some forks are flat-out scams. There’s already been one reported scam: Bitcoin Platinum. Scams can come in the form of forks that are created to short Bitcoin’s price (e.g., Bitcoin Platinum) or something more elaborate such as forks that are created to steal users’ real Bitcoins in the process of claiming the new coin (e.g., Bitcoin Gold fake wallet).\nAs you can see, claiming coins from a fork entails a considerable amount of risk from the user’s side.\n\nHow to safely claim coins from a fork\nFirst, I’d suggest reading a bit about the project. Find out who the developers are, what their track record is, how far along they are in their road map, what have other publications written about them, and the like. If all that makes sense to you, then perhaps the fork is indeed legit.\n\nHowever, even if a fork is legit, it doesn’t mean it’s worth going through the hassle of claiming its coins. The claiming process is usually complicated, and you risk losing your coins if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. Say you’re holding 0.5 Bitcoins, and you’re eligible for 0.5 Bitcoin Gold. I’m not sure the immediate profit is worth the risk. This is, of course, a personal decision you should make.\n\nFor example, one of the most important things that a forked coin has to implement is something called replay protection. It basically means that the network will be able to separate the new coin from the original one and not accidentally send the original one to the new coin address when claiming the forked coin.\n\nIf, in the end, you decide you want to claim your coins, I suggest that you follow guides only from well-known wallets (i.e., TREZOR, Ledger, etc.) or credited publications. Keep in mind that in the end, it’s your money, and no publication will be able to take responsibility if you do something wrong along the way—even if they accidentally published misinformation (as we unfortunately once did in the past).\n\nWhat I’m trying to say is that it’s a risky business. Make sure to understand the process and make your own choices.\n\nIf you do decide to claim forked coins you need to make sure your Bitcoins are in a wallet that allows you access to the private keys. This means you need to get your Bitcoins off exchanges and other web wallets before the fork occurs. If you don’t have access to your private keys you won’t be able to extract the forked coin.\n\nOnce the fork occurs you’ll need to do two things:\nSend your Bitcoins to a new wallet with a different private key\nUpload your old private key to a wallet that supports the forked coin\nSince each fork is different it’s hard to say which wallet will support each fork. Usually the official fork site will display the wallets and exchanges that support it. If you leave your coins on an exchange that supports the fork there’s a good chance you can avoid extracting the coins yourself and that the exchange will do it for you, however you are basically at their mercy.\n\nRemember, the one rule you should always follow before trying to claim any coins is to move your Bitcoins to a new wallet with a new seed phrase. This move will reduce the chances of you losing your Bitcoin to almost zero.\n\nUpcoming Bitcoin forks for 2018\nNow that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s review the upcoming Bitcoin forks for 2018.\n\nSuper Bitcoin (SBTC)\nFork Date: 12/12/2017 — Block 498,888\n\nChanges from original protocol: smart contracts, Lightning Network, zero-knowledge proofs, 8 MB block size\n\nDistribution method: 1 BTC = 1 SBTC\n\nSuper Bitcoin aims to “make Bitcoin great again,” although the developers accept the idea as an experiment. It incorporates the best proposals from the Bitcoin community to see how all the forefront technologies combine.\n\nBitcoinX (BCX)\nFork Date: 12/12/2017 — Block 498,888\n\nChanges from original protocol: combining zero-knowledge proof, smart contract, DPOS consensus, crosschain technology data, SegWit, Lightning Network\n\nDistribution method: 1BTC = 10,000 BCT\n\nBitcoinX is designed to release the full potential of Bitcoin in a scalable way for the future. By combining speed, smart contracts, and privacy, the development team is looking to build a cryptocurrency to suit modern society.\n\nLightning Bitcoin (LBTC)\nFork Date: 18/12/2017 — Block 499,999\n\nChanges from original protocol: DPoS Consensus, three-second block time, 2 MB block size, no difficulty adjustment, smart contracts\n\nDistribution method: 1BTC = 1 LBTC\n\n\nLightning Bitcoin pushes the boundaries of blockchain speed with bigger block sizes that are created in seconds rather than minutes. The addition of smart contracts and DPoS consensus should allow for a truly high-speed autonomous network.\n\nBitcoin Platinum (BTP)\nFork Date: 18/12/2017 — Block 500,000\n\nChanges from original protocol: No pre-mine, 2.5-minute block time, SegWit2x, difficulty adjustment every block\n\nDistribution method: 1BTC = 1 BTP\n\n\nBitcoin Platinum holds some pretty simple upgrades that make it slightly similar to Litecoin thanks to a 2.5-minute block time. The inclusion of the controversial SegWit2x could offer a more scalable solution to Bitcoin Legacy. However, reports of a scam are haunting Bitcoin Platinum.\n\nBitcoin God (GOD)\nFork Date: 25/12/2017 — Block 501,225\n\nChanges from original protocol: no pre-mine, proof of stake, smart contracts, Lightning Network, large block size\n\nDistribution method: 1 BTC = 1 GOD\n\n\nSome details are still to be confirmed for Bitcoin God, but the branding is rather catchy. Proof of stake, smart contracts, and Lightning Network will make for an interesting change to the usual Bitcoin protocols.\n\nBitcoin Cash Plus (BCP)\nFork Date: 2/1/2018 — Block 501,407\n\nChanges from original protocol: No pre-mine, SigHash, emergency difficulty adjustment (EDA), 8 MB block size\n\nDistribution method: 1BTC = 1 BCP\n\n\nBitcoin Cash Plus throws more confusion into the Bitcoin industry. Is it that much different from the hotly tipped Bitcoin Cash? Zero pre-mining is a healthy way to start, but little information is available on its website.\n\nBitcoin Uranium (BUM)\nFork Date: Around 31/12/2017 — Block not yet announced\n\nChanges from original protocol: No pre-mine, one-minute block time, SegWit, unique address format\n\nDistribution method: 1BTC = 1 BUM\n\n\nBitcoin Uranium wants to send rippling shockwaves through Bitcoin and reinitiate a truly decentralized currency. Quick block times combined with Equihash will allow GPU/CPU mining aims to open up mining to everybody.\n\nBitcoin Atom (BCA)\nFork Date: December 2017 — Block not yet announced\n\nChanges from original protocol: Hybrid consensus (PoS and PoW), Lightning Network, Hash time-locked contracts\n\nDistribution method: 1 BTC = 1 BCA\n\nBitcoin Atom focuses its efforts on consensus modeling and off-chain transactions. bodyAlias i get to introduce myself. Stephen is my name. A 23 year old guy from Ghana(West Africa); a land of great cultural heritage. Though i hold a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources Technology my other interest in I.T has led me to venture in developing management systems among others. Nature and I.T lover i guess.. ![DSC_0038.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdSwVympcJ199HYgGB53GeZvCL8XuHxjmAizu1hn1zzuj/DSC_0038.JPG) I have a dream which sometimes scares me ( a 'Xanadu' of greatness) but guess what; the good news is that, the source of my strength (GOD) is able to do exceeding above all i can ask or think of. I believe hardwork pays but combing smartness and moral values makes one more fruitful in all spheres of life. To all steemians, i say dare to dream, live right, work hard, be good to your environment, stay healthy and never give up because once there is life, there is hope.. Concluding my simple intro; i look forward to explore, learn, share, have fun and lastly earn decently to impact lives and enjoy.. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
