No era la primera vez que la “ayudaba” a batir ingredientes con la vieja mezcladora Sunbeam, y recordaba que era harina de trigo el ingrediente de rigor.\n\n-Porque hace dos meses que no hay harina en el mercado.\n\n-El pan se hace con harina -le expliqué a mi abuela desde la sabiduría de mis siete años. -¿Cómo puede haber pan si no hay harina?\n\n-Pregúntale a Fidel…\n\nMi abuela no necesitaba que se le diera mucha cuerda para arremeter contra el Gobierno Revolucionario, incluyendo a todos sus líderes y teóricos, desde Marx hasta el Comandante en Jefe. Pero sus argumentos en contra del comunismo se limitaban al simple sentido común, del tipo de “lo mío es mío y lo tuyo es tuyo”, y la retórica oficial no tenía mucho problema en descalificarlos tratándolos como uno más de los muchos “rezagos del pasado burgués” que los cubanos, a través de la maquinaria propagandística del Estado, éramos constantemente exhortados a combatir. La versión oficial achacaba las carencias a los “antisociales” que acaparaban mercancías para luego revenderlas en el mercado negro; y, por supuesto, al chivo expiatorio por excelencia: el “criminal bloqueo” de los Estados Unidos. Los escépticos, como mi abuela, culpaban a los funcionarios del régimen, atajo de ignorantes incapaces, que no sabían cómo producir y distribuir eficazmente la infinidad de productos que la población requería para su subsistencia. Incluso los partidarios del sistema, que también sufrían las consecuencias del desabastecimiento, culpaban a la natural tendencia de los nativos tropicales al desorden y la holgazanería; sin saber que los mismos problemas se repetían en cada uno de los países devastados por el desastre del socialismo, desde China hasta Alemania, sin importar las culturas, idiosincracias y tradiciones.\n\nDe haber leído a Mises, habríamos sabido que en una economía libre, el mercado asigna automáticamente un precio a cada producto de acuerdo a las fluctuaciones en la oferta y la demanda, y el sistema de precios resultante le permite a cada actor tomar decisiones racionales para optimizar el uso de los recursos de que dispone. El comunismo carece de un sistema que le permita distribuir eficientemente los recursos, porque los precios son establecidos arbitrariamente por un burócrata, y no conllevan ninguna información significativa de su importancia relativa en el mercado. Por eso la gente se ve obligada a rallar pan para producir harina; derretir helado para usarlo como leche; y destruir un par de zapatos para usar la piel en la fabricación de un bolso.\n\nDespués de este primer tropiezo con el problema del cálculo económico, tuvieron que transcurrir varias décadas para que, gracias a una nueva tecnología conocida como “Internet”, cayera en mis manos un libro de Ludwig von Mises.
