| title | Sankey Diagram Generator |
| body | Check out the [Sankey Diagram Generator](//sankey.csaladen.es) I have just made. It supports self loops, moving around nodes in both horizontal and vertical directions and loading and saving diagrams! You can also change the opacity and the density of the links. Use the Load/Save button to edit/create complex Sankey's. The source code for the Sankey displayed above is: `{"nodes":[{"name":"Oil"},{"name":"Natural Gas"},{"name":"Coal"},{"name":"Fossil Fuels"},{"name":"Electricity"},{"name":"Energy"}],"links":[{"source":0,"target":3,"value":15},{"source":1,"target":3,"value":20},{"source":2,"target":3,"value":25},{"source":2,"target":4,"value":25},{"source":3,"target":5,"value":60},{"source":4,"target":5,"value":25},{"source":4,"target":4,"value":5}]} ` You can also use the keyword layer to create nodes fixed along the x-axis. In the above example, if you use "layer": 3 for the node Fossil Fuels and "layer":4 for Electricity, they will not be aligned, with the latter being placed to the right of the former. `{"nodes":[{"name":"Oil"},{"name":"Natural Gas"},{"name":"Coal"},{"name":"Fossil Fuels","layer":3},{"name":"Electricity","layer":4},{"name":"Energy"}],"links":[{"source":0,"target":3,"value":15},{"source":1,"target":3,"value":20},{"source":2,"target":3,"value":25},{"source":2,"target":4,"value":25},{"source":3,"target":5,"value":60},{"source":4,"target":5,"value":25},{"source":4,"target":4,"value":5}]} ` You can also fix the size of a node using the keyword value. `{"nodes":[{"name":"Oil"},{"name":"Natural Gas"},{"name":"Coal"},{"name":"Fossil Fuels","layer":3,"value":10},{"name":"Electricity","layer":4},{"name":"Energy"}],"links":[{"source":0,"target":3,"value":15},{"source":1,"target":3,"value":20},{"source":2,"target":3,"value":25},{"source":2,"target":4,"value":25},{"source":3,"target":5,"value":60},{"source":4,"target":5,"value":25},{"source":4,"target":4,"value":5}]} ` **UDPATE**: Using the keyword fill, you can also **color** the nodes (and automatically their links). `{"nodes":[{"name":"Oil"},{"name":"Natural Gas"},{"name":"Coal","fill":"black"},{"name":"Fossil Fuels","layer":3,"value":10},{"name":"Electricity","layer":4},{"name":"Energy"}],"links":[{"source":0,"target":3,"value":15},{"source":1,"target":3,"value":20},{"source":2,"target":3,"value":25},{"source":2,"target":4,"value":25},{"source":3,"target":5,"value":60},{"source":4,"target":5,"value":25},{"source":4,"target":4,"value":5}]} ` **UDPATE 2**: Today the Sankey Diagram Generator got a **major update**: I have been working on the **load** and **save** functions to include the layout. Another minor update is that now you can toggle the node labels (both the text and values) on/off. On top giving you the option to save the Sankey structure and layout, now you can also save the diagram as a PNG image. Now, when trying to save the Sankey code, a checkbox shows up next to the Done button, giving you the option to save the Sankey layout for loading later. This includes the node and link positions, as well as the settings for opacity and density. This is a major milestone as it has been a headache to redesign Sankeys, as previously only the structure was saved but not the layout. On the save screen now you also have the option to download the diagram as image. As a result of these modifications, the Sankey save string changed a little bit in structure. In order to preserve background compatibility, the Sankey structure code - which made up the entirety of the save string up until now - was put under the key `sankey`, the parameters on whether to display labels, density and opacity under the key `params` and finally, the layout, if selected, under `fixedlayout`. Subsequently, when loading back the Sankey save string you are given the option to try to read the layout from the string. If you do not provide the layout, or you choose to ignore it (via a checkbox next to the Done button), the algorithm computes the layout for you automatically, as before. The structure of the `fixedlayout` key is a set of coordinates [x,y] for each of the nodes. So a fixedlayout string in the form of `[[0,30],[0,20],[10,50]]` will have 3 nodes, the first placed at `x=0, y=30` on the screen, the second at `0, 20` and so on. These are pixel values starting in the top left corner. **UDPATE 3**: Some users have requested to be able to create Sankeys with multiple flows between the same two nodes. This can be interpreted as having parallel links. While with a small number of parallel links, this is not a problem, the relaxation algorithm fails to lay out the links correctly in case of many. This algorithm is at the core of the rendering and therefore hard to change as it is designed to optimize the layout in general (minimize the total link path length in the connected component). However, I have included an experimental feature to correctly display Sankeys with many parallel links - this will not necessary offer the best layout for regular Sankeys though. In the `sankey.js`, there is a function called `computeLinkDepths` which sorts the links in ascending order at the sources and subsequently at the targets. This leads to some ordering conflicts (two source nodes going to the same target, with links of different value, will not both have their top link at the top at the target), which are then solved be the least in number. In case of parallel links, this creates a messy layout. To solve this, I have included a toggle for parallel rendering. This is a bit of an advanced feature and I encourage you to try to understand the `sankey.js` code structure before you turn this on. How to turn it on? First, make sure that in your input string all parallel links are sorted by value and grouped by source node. An example of this would be: `{"sankey":{"nodes":[{"name":"a"},{"name":"b"},{"name":"c"},"name":"d"}],"links":[{"source":0,"target":1,"value":10},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":70},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":80},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":100},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":200},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":700},{"source":0,"target":1,"value":800},{"source":0,"target":2,"value":20},{"source":0,"target":2,"value":30},{"source":0,"target":2,"value":40},{"source":0,"target":2,"value":300},{"source":0,"target":2,"value":400},{"source":0,"target":3,"value":60},{"source":0,"target":3,"value":600},{"source":2,"target":3,"value":50}]},"params":[0.5,0.25,0,0]} ` Then open up a [console](http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/8525/how-to-open-the-javascript-console-in-different-browsers#77337) in your browser and turn on parallel rendering by typing the following: `parallelrendering=true`. Then hit the Draw Sankey button to redraw the diagram and you should be seeing your Sankey with many parallel links loaded correctly. You can turn it off either by refreshing the page or setting it back to false in the console. Have fun! **UDPATE 4**: Added option for adjusting decimals for nodes and links, as well a counter for the node editor on the right, making it easier to create larger diagrams. **UPDATE 5**: Sankey Diagram Generator is now on **[GitHub](https://github.com/csaladenes/sankey)**. You can ubmit feature requests and follow the development there. Made with [D3.js](//d3js.org/) & [Dragdealer](//skidding.github.io/dragdealer/). | title | Religious diversity in Romania visualized on colorwheels |
| body | <p style="text-align: justify;">Now we will visualize and examine the religious breakdown of the country of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Romania </strong></a>and its <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_regions_of_Romania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historical regions</a>. We find that the 4 regions exhibit 4 different patterns and various levels of diversity. A good way to do this comparison is via <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGB_color_model" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RGB colorwheels</a>. <p style="text-align: justify;">We extend the 3-axis, <strong><b style="color: #ff0000;">red</b>-<b style="color: #339966;">green</b>-<b style="color: #3366ff;">blue</b></strong> colorwheel to cater for the dominant religions of the country. The result is a 6-axis colorwheel with the sequence of <strong><b style="color: #ff0000;">red</b>-<b style="color: #ffcc00;">yellow</b>-<b style="color: #339966;">green</b>-<b style="color: #00ccff;">cyan</b>-<b style="color: #3366ff;">blue</b>-<b style="color: #ff00ff;">violet</b></strong>. Then, to each of these colors we attach a religion. Using the statistics of the <a href="http://www.recensamantromania.ro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Romanian National Census Bureau</a>, we can define the dominant religions and aggregate the ones with a smaller number of followers. This process yields the following major religions/colors:</p> <ul style="text-align: justify;"> <li><strong><b style="color: #ff0000;">Orthodox</b></strong></li> <li><b style="color: #ffcc00;"><strong>Catholic</strong></b></li> <li><b style="color: #339966;"><strong>Reformed</strong></b></li> <li><b style="color: #00ccff;"><strong>Unitarian | Other protestant</strong></b></li> <li><b style="color: #3366ff;"><strong>Other religion | Atheist</strong></b></li> <li><strong><b style="color: #ff00ff;">Adventist | Pentecostal</b> </strong></li> </ul> <p style="text-align: justify;">Technical details:</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Using this coding, we plot each of the settlements (on a commune administrative resolution) onto the colorwheel. The color (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hue" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hue</a>) of a data-point (equivalent to the angle on the colorwheel) indicates the dominant religion of the settlement. The brightness of the color (radius) gives the relative dominance when compared to the other religions (There is a caveat when using colorwheels with more than 3 dimensions: while for 3 dimensional colorwheels a 40%-40% share of the two dominant colors gives us an exact indication of the third color, in higher dimensions this needs extra information). All points will lay within the indicated hexagon. For visual guidance, we have shown the diagonals. For points in the vertices, one religion has full relative dominance - 100% of the population follows it. A fully</em><em> <b style="color: #ff0000;">red</b> point indicates a 100% <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b> settlement while a fully <b style="color: #ffcc00;">yellow</b> point marks a pure <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholic</b> commune. Halfway on the diagonal connecting the red and yellow vertices (<b style="color: #ff6600;">orange </b>region) lay settlements with a population of half orthodox and half catholic believers. The presence of other religions will result in moving away from this diagonal. When reading the colorwheel, it is important to check the tooltips showing detailed breakdown of the religions and monitor the points placed along the edges and diagonals.</em></p> <p><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index3-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img class="wp-image-476 size-full" src="https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/clipboard01.png" alt="Religions of Romania Colorwheel" width="740" height="719" /></a></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">The religions of Romania seem to be clustered into 3 groups. It is clear that the <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b> church is by far the largest, followed by a roughly equal number of <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholic</b> and <b style="color: #339966;">reformed </b>believers. There are also smaller groups of <b style="color: #00ccff;">other protestant</b> (mainly <b style="color: #00ccff;">unitarian</b>) and <b style="color: #ff00ff;">adventist/pentecostal</b> (mainly <b style="color: #ff00ff;">pentecostal</b>) followers, while there are almost no settlements with a dominant religion other than these 5.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">The most populated vertex is the red one, meaning that the overwhelming majority of the country contains settlements with a <b style="text-decoration: underline;">purely orthodox</b> population. There are some points in the yellow vertex as well, meaning that there are some settlements with a purely catholic population. However, the other 4 vertices are unpopulated, meaning that these religions <em>only</em> appear in conjunction with others (with the exception of Ghindaresti, a purely <b style="color: #000000;">old orthodox</b> commune). Here is is also worth noting that the largest points are <b style="text-decoration: underline;">almost always</b> located in the red vertex, meaning that almost all of the large cities of the country are all <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">It is interesting to notice that while there are numerous communities lying on the red-yellow and red-violet edges and the red-green diagonal, there are a comparatively smaller number of points on other edges and in regions far from the diagonals. This means that while there are <b style="text-decoration: underline;">numerous</b> settlements with 2 dominant religions, the balanced presence of 3 or more religions is far more <b style="text-decoration: underline;">uncommon</b>. Also, while there are blended and balanced catholic-orthodox and reformed-orthodox settlements, this is not true for reformed-catholic communes (the yellow-green edge is empty). Although the number of <b style="color: #ff00ff;">pentecostal</b> believers is quite high, their highest share within a settlement is 66% and almost all of the dominant pentecostal settlements lie within the red-blue-violet triangle, with a large number of points on the red-violet edge. This means that when pentecostals are in majority then the minority religion is almost always the orthodox, and if a second minority is present, then it is probably not catholic or reformed.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">These patterns of mixing of the religions are of course oftentimes due to geographic properties. Let us plot these data-points geocoded onto the map of the country, keeping the color-coding the same (interactive infographic, <a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/map2-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fullscreen</a>):</p> <p><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/map2-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img class="wp-image-479 size-full" src="https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/clipboard02.png" alt="Religions of Romania Colormap" width="728" height="727" /></a></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">We can see that the country's religious diversity is the highest in the central region (Transylvania), greatly correlated with the settlements of the ethnic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minorities_of_Romania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minorities</a> of the country, while the other regions are significantly more homogeneous. We can also see that there is a clear phenomenon of <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clustering_(demographics)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clustering</a></b>, meaning that followers of the same religion tend to live in population blocks, close to each other - also observed in the case of large cities, which are mostly all orthodox. This may not come as surprise, as culture and religion (and maybe even <a href="http://www.petersoninstitute.org/publications/wp/03-8.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">economic performance</a>) are often interlinked concepts. Indeed, the catholics tend to be in majority in Harghita county (central yellow region with a majority Hungarian population) and in some areas of Western Moldavia (yellow clusters in the top right). The reformed followers live in majority in the counties of Covasna, Mures and Bihor, while the unitarians are the majority in the Western part of Harghita county. The religious diversity of the country is therefore the highest in the central part of Romania (a region also called<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sz%C3%A9kely_Land" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Székelyland </a>by inhabitants), where at least 4 major religions coexist. A comparative diversity can only be observed in the Western part of the country, along the Hungarian border, again due to the presence of ethnic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minorities_of_Romania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minorities</a>. If we look carefully, we can observe that in Transylvania there is a reddish-violet band extending from the Ukrainian border on the North all the way to the Serbian border in the Southwest, indicating the presence of pentecostal and adventist believers.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Romania's <b style="text-decoration: underline;">religious diversity is higher in the central region</b> than in other parts of the country. Therefore let us look at the individual religious colorwheels for each of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_regions_of_Romania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">historical regions </a>of the country (interactive infographics, <a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/all-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fullscreen</a>, click on list items for individual graphs):</p> <ul style="text-align: justify;"> <li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Transylvania</a></li> <li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index6-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wallachia</a></li> <li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index8-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Moldavia</a></li> <li style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index7-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dobruja</a></li> </ul> <p><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/all-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img class="wp-image-487 size-full" src="https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/regions.png" alt="Religions of Romanian Regions Colorwheel" width="1000" height="1000" /></a></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Quite surprisingly, the<b style="text-decoration: underline;"> four regions</b> of country exhibit<b style="text-decoration: underline;"> four different patterns</b>!</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">The colormap of<a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> </a><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Transylvania</strong> </a>is vastly different from the other 3 regions, but it is similar to that of the country, meaning that <b style="text-decoration: underline;">most</b> of the country's religious diversity is attributable to this region - consistent with what we found through the geographic analysis as well. Next to the omnipresent fully <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b> settlements, we find communes with populations consisting of entirely or mostly <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholic</b>, <b style="color: #339966;">reformed </b>or <b style="color: #00ccff;">unitarian</b> believers. However, contrary to the country-level pattern, we find almost no points on the red-yellow line, corresponding to balanced but exclusively orthodox-catholic cohabitation. The green-yellow edge is bit more populated, but still confined to a handful of settlements. This means that catholic communities only exist <b style="text-decoration: underline;">alone</b> or together with <b style="text-decoration: underline;">at least two</b> of the other religions. Also, the isolation of the yellow cluster in the yellow vertex means that there are no communes with 50%-70% <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholics</b>, no matter what is the share of other religions - this religion existing only in a localized cluster, or in balanced system of 3 or more religions. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in case of <b style="color: #00ccff;">unitarians</b>, where a few communes have an overwhelming majority (>70%) of followers, but in case of other settlements, the unitarians make up less than 30% (and in most cases less than 10%) of the population. This can be interpreted as the demographic analytic of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">buckling</a> or snap phenomenon. For the case of followers of the <b style="color: #339966;">reformed</b> religion, there are numerous settlements in which reformed and orthodox believers are in balanced majority (as we can see from the populated red-green diagonal), as well existence in conjunction with other religions (area around the red-green diagonal).</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">In <a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index6-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Moldavia</strong></a>, there are 4 religions present: the majority is <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b>, there is a slightly smaller <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholic </b>community, and a small <b style="color: #ff00ff;">pentecostal</b> and <b style="color: #3366ff;"><b style="color: #3366ff;">old catholic</b> </b><b style="color: #000000;">community. Contrary to the case observed in Transylvania, there are many balanced only catholic-orthodox settlements (remember the observed geography of the catholic clusters in Moldavia along the Siret river). The even more interesting phenomenon is that in Moldavia these settlements are inhabited </b><b style="text-decoration: underline;">exclusively</b><b style="color: #000000;"> by catholics and orthodox'. When looking at the presence of other religions, we notice a </b><a style="color: #000000;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoke-hub_distribution_paradigm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hub-and-spoke</a><b style="color: #000000;"> pattern, meaning that most of the data points lie on the diagonals. This means that next to the dominant orthodox religion, a certain commune has usually </b><b style="text-decoration: underline;">only one other</b><b style="color: #000000;"> religion. This phenomenon becomes apparent when looking at the detailed breakdowns of the communes along the red-violet and red-blue axis, revealing orthodox-pentecostal only and orthodox-old catholic only settlements.</b></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">When looking at the map of<a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index7-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <strong>Dobruja</strong></a>, the dimensionality is further reduced, and we find all settlements laying in the red vertex or on the red-blue diagonal. This means that Dobrujan communes are either fully <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b>, or orthodox believers cohabit with followers of <b style="color: #3366ff;">other religions</b> (which in this case is <b style="color: #3366ff;">old catholics</b> and <b style="color: #3366ff;">muslims</b>). One interesting observation is that while old catholics exhibit the snap property (as in the case of Transylvanian catholics and unitarians), with no settlements with 40%-75% old catholic share and very few with 1%-10%, muslim communities have a more continuous range of shares, but mostly under 20%.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index8-en-wrapper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Wallachia</strong> </a>is, without doubt, religiously the most compact region of the country. In this region almost <b style="text-decoration: underline;">all</b> data-points lie in the red vertex, equivalent to many <b style="color: #ff0000;">orthodox</b>-only communes. Sporadically there are settlements with comparatively larger <b style="color: #ffcc00;">catholic</b>, <b style="color: #ff00ff;">pentecostal</b> and <b style="color: #00ccff;">evangelical lutheran</b> believers, but these are the exceptions rather than the norm.</p> <h3 style="text-align: justify;"><b style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Now why is all this important?</strong></b></h3> <p style="text-align: justify;">Renowned University of Toronto and NYU professor <a href="https://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=Richard_Florida&original_referer=http://www.citylab.com/authors/richard-florida/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Richard Florida</a> has just recently <a href="http://www.citylab.com/politics/2014/12/the-link-between-religious-diversity-and-economic-development/372585/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained </a>how religious diversity is likely to lead to economic development. Also, as he quotes, a Harvard study of US counties has<a href="http://people.hmdc.harvard.edu/~akozaryn/myweb/rel_inn.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> found </a>that more religious counties are less innovative and creative. Therefore it is of utmost importance for the long-term economic and cultural sustainability and stability of the country to <b style="text-decoration: underline;">preserve its religious diversity</b>, and if possible even <b style="text-decoration: underline;">support more diversification</b>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">I would like to conclude this post with a quote from Dr. Florida's post:</p> <blockquote> <p style="text-align: justify;">Many pundits and social scientists continue to discount the economic role of diversity, turning instead to more standard economic variables like technology and education. Those things clearly matter, but the diversity and openness of a society do as well. Our analysis finds that diversity is associated with economic competitiveness, entrepreneurship, and key measures of talent and human capital.</p> </blockquote> <p style="text-align: justify;">The sources of the open data were the statistics published by the <a href="http://www.recensamantromania.ro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Romanian National Census Bureau</a> and own work. The data has been processed into <a href="http://www.json.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JSON </a>format with <a href="http://nbviewer.ipython.org/url/blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/religion-en.ipynb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this</a> <a href="http://ipython.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IPython</a> notebook, with help from <a href="http://pandas.pydata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pandas</a>. "body": "<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now we will visualize and examine the religious breakdown of the country of <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Romania </strong></a>and its <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_regions_of_Romania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historical regions</a>. We find that the 4 regions exhibit 4 different patterns and various levels of diversity. A good way to do this comparison is via <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGB_color_model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RGB colorwheels</a>. \n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We extend the 3-axis, <strong><b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">red</b>-<b style=\"color: #339966;\">green</b>-<b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">blue</b></strong> colorwheel to cater for the dominant religions of the country. The result is a 6-axis colorwheel with the sequence of <strong><b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">red</b>-<b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">yellow</b>-<b style=\"color: #339966;\">green</b>-<b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">cyan</b>-<b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">blue</b>-<b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">violet</b></strong>. Then, to each of these colors we attach a religion. Using the statistics of the <a href=\"http://www.recensamantromania.ro/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romanian National Census Bureau</a>, we can define the dominant religions and aggregate the ones with a smaller number of followers. This process yields the following major religions/colors:</p>\n\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<li><strong><b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Orthodox</b></strong></li>\n\t<li><b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>Catholic</strong></b></li>\n\t<li><b style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Reformed</strong></b></li>\n\t<li><b style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Unitarian | Other protestant</strong></b></li>\n\t<li><b style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Other religion | Atheist</strong></b></li>\n\t<li><strong><b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Adventist | Pentecostal</b> </strong></li>\n</ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Technical details:</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Using this coding, we plot each of the settlements (on a commune administrative resolution) onto the colorwheel. The color (<a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hue</a>) of a data-point (equivalent to the angle on the colorwheel) indicates the dominant religion of the settlement. A fully</em><em> <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">red</b> point indicates a 100% <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b> settlement while a fully <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">yellow</b> point marks a pure <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholic</b> commune. Halfway on the diagonal connecting the red and yellow vertices (<b style=\"color: #ff6600;\">orange </b>region) lay settlements with a population of half orthodox and half catholic believers. The presence of other religions will result in moving away from this diagonal. When reading the colorwheel, it is important to check the tooltips showing detailed breakdown of the religions and monitor the points placed along the edges and diagonals.</em></p>\n\n<p><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index3-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img class=\"wp-image-476 size-full\" src=\"https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/clipboard01.png\" alt=\"Religions of Romania Colorwheel\" width=\"740\" height=\"719\" /></a></p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The religions of Romania seem to be clustered into 3 groups. It is clear that the <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b> church is by far the largest, followed by a roughly equal number of <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholic</b> and <b style=\"color: #339966;\">reformed </b>believers. There are also smaller groups of <b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">other protestant</b> (mainly <b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">unitarian</b>) and <b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">adventist/pentecostal</b> (mainly <b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">pentecostal</b>) followers, while there are almost no settlements with a dominant religion other than these 5.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most populated vertex is the red one, meaning that the overwhelming majority of the country contains settlements with a <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">purely orthodox</b> population. There are some points in the yellow vertex as well, meaning that there are some settlements with a purely catholic population. However, the other 4 vertices are unpopulated, meaning that these religions <em>only</em> appear in conjunction with others (with the exception of Ghindaresti, a purely <b style=\"color: #000000;\">old orthodox</b> commune). Here is is also worth noting that the largest points are <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">almost always</b> located in the red vertex, meaning that almost all of the large cities of the country are all <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b>.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is interesting to notice that while there are numerous communities lying on the red-yellow and red-violet edges and the red-green diagonal, there are a comparatively smaller number of points on other edges and in regions far from the diagonals. This means that while there are <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">numerous</b> settlements with 2 dominant religions, the balanced presence of 3 or more religions is far more <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">uncommon</b>. Also, while there are blended and balanced catholic-orthodox and reformed-orthodox settlements, this is not true for reformed-catholic communes (the yellow-green edge is empty). Although the number of <b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">pentecostal</b> believers is quite high, their highest share within a settlement is 66% and almost all of the dominant pentecostal settlements lie within the red-blue-violet triangle, with a large number of points on the red-violet edge. This means that when pentecostals are in majority then the minority religion is almost always the orthodox, and if a second minority is present, then it is probably not catholic or reformed.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These patterns of mixing of the religions are of course oftentimes due to geographic properties. Let us plot these data-points geocoded onto the map of the country, keeping the color-coding the same (interactive infographic, <a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/map2-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fullscreen</a>):</p>\n\n<p><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/map2-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img class=\"wp-image-479 size-full\" src=\"https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/clipboard02.png\" alt=\"Religions of Romania Colormap\" width=\"728\" height=\"727\" /></a></p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We can see that the country's religious diversity is the highest in the central region (Transylvania), greatly correlated with the settlements of the ethnic <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minorities_of_Romania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minorities</a> of the country, while the other regions are significantly more homogeneous. We can also see that there is a clear phenomenon of <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clustering_(demographics)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clustering</a></b>, meaning that followers of the same religion tend to live in population blocks, close to each other - also observed in the case of large cities, which are mostly all orthodox. This may not come as surprise, as culture and religion (and maybe even <a href=\"http://www.petersoninstitute.org/publications/wp/03-8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economic performance</a>) are often interlinked concepts. The religious diversity of the country is therefore the highest in the central part of Romania (a region also called<a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sz%C3%A9kely_Land\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Székelyland </a>by inhabitants), where at least 4 major religions coexist. A comparative diversity can only be observed in the Western part of the country, along the Hungarian border, again due to the presence of ethnic <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minorities_of_Romania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minorities</a>. If we look carefully, we can observe that in Transylvania there is a reddish-violet band extending from the Ukrainian border on the North all the way to the Serbian border in the Southwest, indicating the presence of pentecostal and adventist believers.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Romania's <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">religious diversity is higher in the central region</b> than in other parts of the country. Therefore let us look at the individual religious colorwheels for each of the <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_regions_of_Romania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historical regions </a>of the country (interactive infographics, <a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/all-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fullscreen</a>, click on list items for individual graphs):</p>\n\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transylvania</a></li>\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index6-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallachia</a></li>\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index8-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moldavia</a></li>\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index7-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dobruja</a></li>\n</ul>\n<p><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/all-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img class=\"wp-image-487 size-full\" src=\"https://csaladenes.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/regions.png\" alt=\"Religions of Romanian Regions Colorwheel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" /></a></p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quite surprisingly, the<b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> four regions</b> of country exhibit<b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> four different patterns</b>!</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The colormap of<a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> </a><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index4-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Transylvania</strong> </a>is vastly different from the other 3 regions, but it is similar to that of the country, meaning that <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most</b> of the country's religious diversity is attributable to this region - consistent with what we found through the geographic analysis as well. Next to the omnipresent fully <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b> settlements, we find communes with populations consisting of entirely or mostly <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholic</b>, <b style=\"color: #339966;\">reformed </b>or <b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">unitarian</b> believers. However, contrary to the country-level pattern, we find almost no points on the red-yellow line, corresponding to balanced but exclusively orthodox-catholic cohabitation. The green-yellow edge is bit more populated, but still confined to a handful of settlements. This means that catholic communities only exist <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">alone</b> or together with <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at least two</b> of the other religions. Also, the isolation of the yellow cluster in the yellow vertex means that there are no communes with 50%-70% <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholics</b>, no matter what is the share of other religions - this religion existing only in a localized cluster, or in balanced system of 3 or more religions. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in case of <b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">unitarians</b>, where a few communes have an overwhelming majority (>70%) of followers, but in case of other settlements, the unitarians make up less than 30% (and in most cases less than 10%) of the population. This can be interpreted as the demographic analytic of <a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buckling</a> or snap phenomenon. For the case of followers of the <b style=\"color: #339966;\">reformed</b> religion, there are numerous settlements in which reformed and orthodox believers are in balanced majority (as we can see from the populated red-green diagonal), as well existence in conjunction with other religions (area around the red-green diagonal).</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index6-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Moldavia</strong></a>, there are 4 religions present: the majority is <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b>, there is a slightly smaller <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholic </b>community, and a small <b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">pentecostal</b> and <b style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">old catholic</b> </b><b style=\"color: #000000;\">community. Contrary to the case observed in Transylvania, there are many balanced only catholic-orthodox settlements (remember the observed geography of the catholic clusters in Moldavia along the Siret river). The even more interesting phenomenon is that in Moldavia these settlements are inhabited </b><b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exclusively</b><b style=\"color: #000000;\"> by catholics and orthodox'. When looking at the presence of other religions, we notice a </b><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoke-hub_distribution_paradigm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hub-and-spoke</a><b style=\"color: #000000;\"> pattern, meaning that most of the data points lie on the diagonals. This means that next to the dominant orthodox religion, a certain commune has usually </b><b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">only one other</b><b style=\"color: #000000;\"> religion. This phenomenon becomes apparent when looking at the detailed breakdowns of the communes along the red-violet and red-blue axis, revealing orthodox-pentecostal only and orthodox-old catholic only settlements.</b></p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When looking at the map of<a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index7-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>Dobruja</strong></a>, the dimensionality is further reduced, and we find all settlements laying in the red vertex or on the red-blue diagonal. This means that Dobrujan communes are either fully <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b>, or orthodox believers cohabit with followers of <b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">other religions</b> (which in this case is <b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">old catholics</b> and <b style=\"color: #3366ff;\">muslims</b>). One interesting observation is that while old catholics exhibit the snap property (as in the case of Transylvanian catholics and unitarians), with no settlements with 40%-75% old catholic share and very few with 1%-10%, muslim communities have a more continuous range of shares, but mostly under 20%.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http://blog.csaladen.es/szekelyfold%20vallas/index8-en-wrapper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wallachia</strong> </a>is, without doubt, religiously the most compact region of the country. In this region almost <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all</b> data-points lie in the red vertex, equivalent to many <b style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orthodox</b>-only communes. Sporadically there are settlements with comparatively larger <b style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">catholic</b>, <b style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">pentecostal</b> and <b style=\"color: #00ccff;\">evangelical lutheran</b> believers, but these are the exceptions rather than the norm.</p>\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Now why is all this important?</strong></b></h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Renowned University of Toronto and NYU professor <a href=\"https://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=Richard_Florida&original_referer=http://www.citylab.com/authors/richard-florida/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Florida</a> has just recently <a href=\"http://www.citylab.com/politics/2014/12/the-link-between-religious-diversity-and-economic-development/372585/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained </a>how religious diversity is likely to lead to economic development. Also, as he quotes, a Harvard study of US counties has<a href=\"http://people.hmdc.harvard.edu/~akozaryn/myweb/rel_inn.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> found </a>that more religious counties are less innovative and creative. Therefore it is of utmost importance for the long-term economic and cultural sustainability and stability of the country to <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">preserve its religious diversity</b>, and if possible even <b style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">support more diversification</b>.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would like to conclude this post with a quote from Dr. Florida's post:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many pundits and social scientists continue to discount the economic role of diversity, turning instead to more standard economic variables like technology and education. Those things clearly matter, but the diversity and openness of a society do as well. Our analysis finds that diversity is associated with economic competitiveness, entrepreneurship, and key measures of talent and human capital.</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sources of the open data were the statistics published by the <a href=\"http://www.recensamantromania.ro/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romanian National Census Bureau</a> and own work.
