This move represents the largest public partnership to-date between a cryptocurrency platform and a traditional financial institution. It is also a reflection of the growing adoption of blockchain technology across the financial realm.\n\nRegarding the partnership, American Express CIO Mark Gordon stated:\n\n“American Express has a long history of integrating new technologies into innovative products and services that differentiate and enhance the customer experience. This collaboration with Ripple and Santander represents the next step forward on our blockchain journey, evolving the way we move money around the world.”\n\nThe first step of the partnership will be to enable American Express business customers in the United States to make payments via the American Express FX International Payments Platform (FXIP) to Santander Bank over RippleNet. These payments will not involve the Ripple coin, XRP, although Ripple representatives have indicated that this will likely change with future developments.\n\nAs blockchain technology gains widespread acceptance, Ripple has worked to position itself as a major player in global financial transactions. Ripple is unlike other cryptocurrencies, as it is managed by a private corporation, and its technology is not open source. Although Ripple operates a blockchain, known as the Ripple Consensus Ledger, it is not decentralized with independent miners. However, Ripple has announced plans to decentralize its network and make it more transparent.\n\nThe partnership with American Express is one of many banking partnerships Ripple has made over the past several months. Ripple now claims to be working with over one hundred banks, including Bank of America, UBS, and RBC. The company also recently held a closed-door summit with central banking officials, including those from the United States. Reportedly, this meeting was to discuss blockchain technology as it applies to national currencies.\n\nRipple has been a partner with Santander Bank since 2016, when the bank updated its mobile app to enable customers to make international transactions over the Ripple blockchain. Santander Bank is a subsidiary of Spanish-based Santander Group, and has more than fourteen million customers in the United Kingdom.\n\nIn a press release, Ripple CEO Brad Garringhouse made clear that this partnership is merely the first step of a much larger plan, stating:\n\n“We’re taking a huge step forward with American Express and Santander in solving the problems corporate customers experience with global payments. How can they protect themselves from potential threats and limit the danger to their crypto finances?\n\nAs controversial as it may be (for the crypto community), the solution may be found in centralized services such as Xapo, especially in cases when anonymity is no longer an option.\n\nWhat is Xapo?\n\n\n\nIt all started when the progressive Argentinian thinker and entrepreneur Wences Casares spotted the unique business opportunity in “being the bank” of digital holdings for the global elite.\n\nCasares with his dogmatic approach towards cryptocurrency (he believes that Bitcoin will be the only digital currency to survive them all) fights hard to create a vast and secure network that compliment his beliefs. They offer Credit Card, Bank Transfer, Online Payment Processor and Cash payment preferences but not all of the payment options are available for every country.\nXapo Wallet – Mobile app and online access are available, they offer a way to store multiple fiat currencies and direct transfer of funds to and from the Xapo Vault.\nXapo Debit Card – Xapo Wallet is directly connected with Xapo Debit Card, that includes functions like the standard debit card, the only difference is that it is backed with Bitcoins instead using fiat currency. This debit card was available in accepted countries, but in January 2018, Visa instructed the company to stop all of their card operations.\nXapo Vault – Well known cold-storage maximum security vault that safely stores Bitcoins.\nAfter setting up the infrastructure, Casares undertook the laborious task of persuading the wealthiest business owners in Silicon Valley that Bitcoin was going to become the only global, high-value crypto asset. That they should invest hard fiat in and that his security system was the best for them.\n\nHe did acquire a very exclusive clientele which brought him fame all across the States and a nickname “Patient Zero” for being the first protagonist for Bitcoin and related business opportunities.\n\nXapo’s Investors\n\n\n\nAccording to anonymous Xapo clients, today’s total value of Bitcoin supply stored in the vaults is $10 billion. In other words, it holds 7% of the world’s Bitcoin market cap owned by a single entity or more than 98% of all deposits retained by about 5760 American banks.\n\nIn order to provide enhanced protection for his clients’ BTCs, Casares relocated Xapo’s HQ in Switzerland after adopting a decommissioned military bunker into a crypto storage facility.\n\nXapo’s most prominent investors are Benchmark, Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, Fortress Investment Group, Ribbit Capital and Emergence Capital Partners, GrayScale, CoinShares, etc. who entirely gathered more than $540 million.\n\nXapo’s high demand is proven by the investments of billionaires Reid Hoffman, Mike Novogratz, John Reed, Dee Hock and many others.\n\nXapo’s Exaggeration\n\n\nXapo’s solution to the Bitcoin’s security issue is not applicable nor useful for mass usage which means that more independent, faster and cheaper solutions are necessary. A recent survey by CNBC has revealed that twenty percent of financial firms plan to begin trading crypto over the next few months. Given that it is obvious to all but the most obstinate critics that crypto has legitimate value, these moves into the crypto space are not surprising. It is now reasonable to assume that cryptocurrencies will be a standard part of mainstream investment portfolios in the near future.\n\nGoldman Sachs is, of course, responding to the demands of the free market as many of its customers are certainly eager to take advantage of crypto’s incredible growth. Also, no doubt many experts at the firm understand the perils of ignoring decentralized assets. Goldman will not buy and sell Bitcoin directly, but rather will create financial products linked to its price. However, direct investment could be in the future if regulatory issues are resolved.\n\nOther financial institutions moving into crypto include the New York Stock Exchange, which is said to be developing an exchange that will enable direct investment into crypto. Although details have not been released, the exchange is rumored to be geared toward large investors. The exchange is also expected to include many platforms, and not merely Bitcoin.\n\nThe entry into cryptocurrencies by legacy financial firms is welcomed by most crypto advocates, and is a clear step forward in crypto’s march toward mainstream. However, a number of challenges remain for these institutions, as cryptos function very differently from the assets these companies are used to managing. In fact, cryptocurrencies represent as much of a threat to financial institutions as they do an opportunity.\n\nOne significant challenge will be establishing exchanges that can compete with those currently in operation. Customers, after all, are primarily seeking the opportunity to purchase and own blockchain assets, and would like to do so easily and affordably. Already there exists hundreds of exchanges that provide this opportunity for fees that are far less than what firms like Goldman Sachs are used to charging. Additionally, the present environment enables investors to trade and acquire crypto anonymously and outside of the scope of government oversight. In fact, decentralized exchanges are expected soon to be the norm, which promise to make all centralized exchanges obsolete.\n\nIn simple terms, cryptocurrencies are designed to be used outside of the traditional banking and finance systems. One does not need large, centrally operated institutions to invest in blockchain assets. Although certainly many investors will feel comfortable with the security and expertise that these firms can offer, in the long run crypto’s decentralized nature means that adopters can manage their investments themselves.\n\nOther concerns for traditional financial firms include the rapid development and evolution of blockchain technology. Even the most seasoned experts cannot accurately predict which platforms will be successful in the long run, or even the extent to which any given platform will be adopted. The true expertise for firms such as Goldman Sachs rests with their ability to predict the future value of assets. Regarding crypto, such predictive ability is impossible.\n\nGiven the significant value of decentralized assets, and the all but certain growth in the sector, the involvement in cryptocurrencies by professional investment firms is inevitable. In fact, one could argue that the future of these very firms depend on it. As the blockchain revolution moves forward, the cryptos that underpin its function will only grow more valuable.
