| body | Recently, I've really been on quite a creative journey. I've spent countless hours planning and developing a road map of what is to come your way. I'm extremely excited about it all and can't wait to unveil it piece by piece! Something that really keeps me going is the following! “The wolf on The hill is never as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill” — ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER Let's think through that for a moment. This can come as two-fold: One being people that have stated they've achieved their goals are to be considered at the top of the hill, and the second being those that we place at the top of the hill. Arnold stated this when he spoke of his training to become Mr. Olympia seven times. So in this scenario, they are the wolf at the top of the hill, and we are the ones climbing. Each there for their respective reasons, but ultimately they are ones that we should be striving to chase. Why do we put them on a hill and not a pedestal? Easy! You can't climb a pedestal. We should never truly place anyone on a pedestal because that is us declaring that they are somewhere we could never hope to be. However, we can climb that hill to reach their level. If you aren't in shape to do so, then train to be in shape. Now I'll be the first to admit that the climbing isn't always fun, but this is the part we have to be willing to do to reach the summit. Do you think that those higher on the hill sat around only dreaming about getting there? They are the ones who sat there on nights their friends are out or that one day that the sun was high in the sky and it was better to be outside than on the computer. Now I'm not saying that you should give up every free night, or ignore the sun every day, but there has to be a willingness to roll up the sleeves and do the dirty work. Are you interested in starting a production and media company? Then grab a camera, learn how to use it, and start shooting. Do you want to begin a blog or write a book? Then start reading things that interest you, keeping a notebook of ideas that come to mind, and start writing away. When you find something that is calling to you then you won't mind climbing that hill to set yourself apart! Thanks for tuning in, and that is your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
About Dapper Dad

https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

Hi, my name is Blake. | body | I was recently sitting in an interview and was asked a question that I haven’t gotten in a long time. When the question was asked I wasn’t exactly sure how to respond in a timely fashion. Let’s travel back for just a bit so I can better set the scene. I started my professional career, meaning out of college, about 6.5 years ago. While to some that might not seem like a large amount of time it has seemed like an eternity to me. All have been with the same company and have been quite motivated to progress in the corporate world. I’m sure this came from witnessing my father run several printing operations all through my childhood. I remember visiting him and how cool it was to be the bosses son. As I aged I always thought that would be me. I’m sure you can probably guess what the question is by now. “Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?”, asked the interviewer. Why wasn’t I equipped to answer this question you ask? I mean come on, who doesn’t know where they want to be in five to ten years? For the first time, I felt lost and unknowing of how to answer. I quickly spat out what I thought made sense as an acceptable answer and the interview went on. I remember when I started my career, and in the first meeting with my then manager, she asked: “What do you want to achieve in your career?”. “Easy! I am going to be CEO of a Fortune 100 company!”, I declared. An ambition that I carried with me for the first five years of my career. It was a thought that I had to be all in on one thing and achieve a high title, and make a lot of money, at a company to feel successful. About a year ago things began to change in my life. Piper and I were in a newly blossoming relationship that was going great, my relationship with my son was so strong, and the idea for Dapper Dad Club came to me full force. The last one has led to what you see today and led into a YouTube platform and many more things to come. I gave this story to say here is why the question was hard for me to answer. Career plans can change! And mine did. In the past year and a half, I’ve discovered so much more about myself than I ever knew before. I have a significantly larger creative side to me, I love the insights we can derive from analytics, and I think human-centered design is what all product development should focus on. All this to say that don’t be afraid to pivot your career goals. I’m still that same motivated young professional at heart and strive for excellence in every challenge. But I’m okay with saying that I don’t need to be sitting on the top floor corner office. Life is yours to take and make it what you will. Allow yourself to become the greatest you, and enjoy the world. Thanks for tuning in, and that is your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
About Dapper Dad

https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

Hi, my name is Blake. | body |

I get my Mini Bro every Thursday night and every other weekend. These are times that Piper and I greatly look forward to. Why, you ask? Simple! We get the joy of being big kids. The mornings are pretty routine at this point. Let me set the scene though. We live in a step up loft apartment with an extra room which is Luca’s. The apartment has fifteen to eighteen-foot ceilings, depending on where you’re at. Now that you have that, allow me to get back to how the mornings start off. Piper and I usually wake up around 7:00 am to hear the little voice of a stretching toddler. Imagine an eighty-year-old man getting in his morning grunts and groans. From there one of two things happen, either we will call out for him to come to crawl in bed with us to get our morning snuggles or we will go crawl in his bed for morning snuggles. After our play time we all get up and brush our teeth together, and it’s off to make breakfast. We all know how picky little humans can be, so Luca will usually ask for his animal crackers while I cook pancakes, my special recipe to come later, and make the coffee. He likes his cup plain and bold. Total joke there! We all know toddlers like sugar in their coffee. Total joke again! After breakfast is ready, we sit at the coffee table and watch a superhero cartoon. This routine has really worked for us and something we extremely enjoy. It’s important for our children to know that they are loved and we are a family unit. Part of this platform has been for me to open up and invite you all into my life. I’d love for you to do the same and share your favorite weekend morning memories in the comments below. Thanks for tuning in, and that’s your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
About Dapper Dad

https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

Hi, my name is Blake. | body |
From Pocket to Wrist...
Call me old-fashioned, which I hope by now you have seen that I mainly am, but there is just something about a timepiece that really speaks to it. A watch can provide character to a wardrobe. At many times it can be the true centerpiece of the ensemble itself. Watches are something that I've always sort of found fascinating and was the one thing I always wanted my father to bring back to me on his many business trips. Due to my interest in the topic, and wanting to pass along the knowledge to you all! Like everything else let's dive into the history of it before moving on the other articles! I found it interesting to discover that there have really been roughly four eras to the ageless timepiece. Let's dive into each one to understand how it's grown to what it is today. The earliest history (1890's to 1920)
Interestingly enough, we do actually have the military to thank for the transition of the watch from the pocket to the wrist. Between the years of 1899 and 1902, during the Second Boer Wars, military personnel needed something that was durable and easy to transport. This also allowed them to easily synchronize their times when progressing. Can you imagine having to dig through your rucksack as you were running through enemy territory? How did they fashion them? Anything that they could use to tie them around their wrists. This wasn't meant to be stylish or fashionable, it was merely about form and function. Prior to this time in history, the wristwatch had solely been a staple in women's fashion. It had never been thought that it had a place in men's style but let's fast forward about 12 years. The year is 1914 and World War 1 has unfortunately begun. Here is where the military begins to provide Trench Watches, as standard issue, for all soldiers. Watch manufactures and marketing firms ate this up as a promotional opportunity to boot. This set the scene that all men, soldier or not, should be wearing watches. It was around this time that we officially see a movement from the battlefield to men's fashion accessory.
The next innovation (1920's)
Of course, there were flaws and room for improvements in the early production of wristwatches. Well enter the 1920's and Carter Watches has really discovered the trick to popularizing their watches. You get movie stars to wear them! I mean can you think of any other way to innovate than that? I'm really kidding there. The biggest innovation of this era was waterproofing. And who other to do this than a little Swiss company by the name of Rolex. They were clearly establishing themselves as the go-to timepiece for luxury and had the opportunity of a lifetime to prove their watches were the best in the market. Mercedes Gleitze has just completed her ten-hour swim of the English Channel. But wait, what's that on her wrist? A Rolex! This really helped establish a pivotal moment in the general watch wearing space.
From then on (1930 to 2000's)
From roughly 1930 to 2000 we don't see much happen in the space of watches. Of course, there were many more types to be developed and even introduction to self-winding watches, but the general premise stays the same. Yes, this is foreshadowing to say that we will dive deeper into the various nuances of the great timepiece but not much to say on the history of it!
The return to pockets (2000's to present)
With the rise in smartphones, we have steadily seen a decline in the wrist wearing market, from a traditional watch perspective. Wearables have become a thing, but people are more heavily favoring the digital piece over the analog. With this, we are starting to again consider the watch to be a pocket commodity.
Be sure to stay tuned for later articles where we will dive into the various fashion forms, and occasions, on how to choose the proper watches. Thanks for tuning in, and that is your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
About Dapper Dad

https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

Hi, my name is Blake. | body | I'm sorry to say this and I know I'm several years late, so you can let the bashing begin, but I recently finished The Office. In my personal opinion, this was easily one of the best series endings ever. Now there are several different lines that we can write about, and probably will in articles to come. However, one that really stands out is when Nard Dog is giving his last goodbye and drops the line, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.". Often times we think about how bored, or unhappy, or unfulfilled we are with our current situation. We sit and dream about what is to come and how we would love to be anywhere but in the here and now. And then years down the road we sit and perform a retrospective of things past. It always seems that this is the moment we realize, well maybe it wasn't so bad. Then begin to laugh because of that one time that Johnny did that hilarious thing, or we realize how stupid that one argument with our loved one was. So how do we make sure that doesn't happen anymore? How about trying a few things, and see what happens? It's not always that serious Many times we like to make things bigger than they actually are. I know it's a shocker because you never do this, but you do. Be willing to take a step back and realize that whatever it is, will it really make that much of a difference in your life in an hour? Identify the daily miracles Every day something great happens. And I mean great! Regardless of the situations that we are in, every day is chance to bring a smile to our face. Smiling has been proven to be the best medicine, so be sure to watch for the wins and miracles that can make you smile. Arguing can be stupid So don't be stupid, stupid! This one can be tough, especially when we feel we have been wronged. But let's get honest here, we most often argue with that special someone that is closest with us. Most of the time over something stupid. Learn to forgive Look we will always be wronged and people will say things that they don't mean to. Yes those things can cause us to feel some kind of way. Be willing to take a step back and say can we both just be sorry for this misunderstanding and move on. Some of mine and Piper's best laughs have come from how dumb the argument was. Write it down There will be plenty to come on this topic. We aren't built to remember every single thing that comes along. Often times we forget it within a matter of minutes and are not able to recall it later. Be sure to write it down to keep it for later. Whether that be digitally or by hand. Capturing life is great If The Office taught us nothing else then recall what Jim said at the end of the series: "Imagine going back and watching a tap of your life. You can see yourself change, and make mistakes, and grow up. You could watch yourself fall in love. Watch yourself become a husband, become a father. You guys gave that to me, and that is an amazing gift" Just like the other bullet points, we will dig into this much deeper later on but is necessary here. I think the quote says it all. Know you can change it If you're unhappy about your situation, then just change it. I know some will sit and say, that isn't possible. But isn't it though? I'm not saying it's going to change right now. It will over time if you are dedicated and want it to though. So go take it! Give these things a try! What's the worst thing that can happen, you sit down in a few years and perform that retrospect to notice those were the good old days? As always thanks for tuning in, and that is your Daily Dose of Dapperness! |

| body | As we all know, I am a huge fan of the gentlemanly era that is the 1940's and 1950's. So from time to time, I will find myself just falling down the rabbit hole of watching old voice over etiquette videos. Sometimes it is for research and to generate ideas for articles, but sometimes just because I find something so fascinating about how society used to be. I tend to over observe these videos and have found that all have a few common themes if you watch closely. One of those themes is a gentleman's subtle conduct towards a lady. I mean, call me crazy, but I think there was something to the elder man's voice narrating the actions of the young boy, and how he is showing respect. I believe that it ingrained a certain psychological nature of how to act. I often find myself repeating the elder man's voice in my head, especially when I am walking next to Piper. Whether it be to enjoy the nice weather, heading to a local restaurant for date night, planned or impromptu, or any other reason. There is always something so refreshing and freeing about this type of entertainment. We may think that a walk is just a walk, and that is all there is to it, but I tend to disagree. There is still room for proper ways to show that special woman she is appreciated and you are that chivalrous gentleman that she fell, or is falling, for. What do I mean by this? Well simply put, as your grandmother would tell you, be sure to be on your best behavior, and show her that you appreciate her company. But what are those small signals that we can send? I'm so glad you asked, how about we look at them now...
Pacing
This is probably the one I have to remind myself of most, to be honest. Make sure you are walking at her pace. It's not easy to walk as fast as you when she is wearing heels to look nice for you. Especially if there is a significant height difference. Walking together shouldn't be a race to get to your destination. Trust me, that building isn't on wheels and rolling away.
Walking Lanes
Be sure that you let your woman walk on the inside of the sidewalk. It should be instinctive that you want to be sure to protect your lady from harm or the splash of a puddle from a car. If it so happens that she is moved to the outside, because of the direction you are walking, be smooth and find something to point out to walk around her and stay there. She will appreciate the small gesture of you wanting to make her feel safe.
First Steps
Let's say you are walking in a city, and you come to a crosswalk. Especially if it is a yield only crosswalk, be sure to take the first steps on the road and make sure the cars will stop. She will again appreciate the gesture that you are taking the initiative for her safety. Points will definitely be gained here.
Conversation
Unless you are out for a jog, who wants to just walk in silence? Especially if you are on a date! Walking is such a great way to have a clear mind and think straight. This is a prime opportunity to have a deep conversation, or simply make mention of little interesting things you see, ask her about her days, tell her your childhood stories, the list goes on and on. Not sure how to keep it going? Check out The Small Talk post!
Double Booked
Here's a tricky situation! Someone else is walking your way, what do you do? Nope, not a trick question. Allow your woman to walk in front of you and slide in line behind her. Open up the sidewalk for everyone, and show her that you not only value her enough to let her go first but also that you are friendly enough to not shove others off the sidewalk. Next time you find yourself on a sidewalk with your lady, try to subtly work in these small gestures. While she may not state it, and as a gentleman you shouldn't expect it, she will certainly appreciate the extra effort. Thanks for tuning in today, and that's your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

About Me

Hi, my name is Blake. | body | Purpose carries many different meanings, but the one that stands out to me the most is the noun definition: A person's sense of resolve of determination. Determining exactly what that is can be a tricky situation for us. We are constantly trying to find what our path is, or what we can do to find our sense of self. As the years have passed, I've gone through many different iterations of what my purpose is. I've gone from wanting to be a professional athlete, to a personal trainer, to actor and model, and many more. All leading me to my purpose of being Dapper Dad. I often recall a conversation I once had with a friend, who built his brand around next level athletic development. As he grew in his fitness journey, he knew it was his purpose to develop the next generation of up athletes. In the middle of the conversation, I asked, "How did you come up with the name?" "Begin to think about who you are, and what you bring to the table. Once you understand that, everything else will come. And of course, hard work and dedication equal success", he replied. He couldn't help but drop that last line in there, as that is his brand motto. Roger Riggle, at www.DefyGenetics.net has stayed true to his purpose and has become the premier athletic trainer in all of VA, and only continues to grow. His clients make their way to premier college athletic programs, the NFL, and other professional sports, by the truckloads. Why tell you a story that happened nearly 10 years ago? What does Roger have to do with this? I provided the story to give an example of how someone identified their purpose, mentally changed his perception of who he was today, pieced a game plan together, and took action. Once we have defined our resolve, then making it happen is all about assembling the execution strategy. But how do I achieve that? Where do I even start? The market I'm interested in is already extremely saturated, how would I even begin? All great questions, and fears, to have. My recommendation to you? Just get started! The road doesn't have to be a tempestuous one, as long as we are brutally honest with ourselves, and follow a solid plan. Step 1: Embrace the suck! Say you want to be an artist, and paint amazing tapestries, but can only just barely scribble a stick figure. They understand that the road ahead will be long, but know that it will get better. Be okay with not being Picasso today. Step 2: Define who you are Here is an opportunity to create a list of who you are with brutal honesty. Give it some serious thought! My list would look something like Father, Dapper Dad, Vlogger, Partner in Crime, Crossfitter, Investor. Step 3: Ask yourself, how do you want people to remember you Here is where we begin to move forward with our thinking. When you depart from this world, how do you want people to remember you? What is that lasting mark that you want to leave? Make a few notes after each outline of who you are. Step 4: Define the roles further Now look back over the list you have created. Dig deeper into each role and start to piece the puzzle together a little deeper. Put some definition into what you are looking to get out of each role. Step 5: Prioritization time Now that we have defined ourselves within each role. Let's put some numbers next to them based on their priority within us. Be honest here too, think back to how you want to be remembered. Step 6: Identify your dreams This is prime time for us to really put ourselves in the shoes of who we want to become. Thinking about who we are and where we want to go, place some dreams based off of that prioritization scale. Step 7: Create an action plan It's time to create the action plan to hold yourself accountable. Specificity is certainly key here! We are more likely to let the dreams we outline slide by if we don't really hold ourselves true. Be sure to give these actions dates to have them completed. Step 8: Revisit often and revise as necessary This should be a fluid list that is ever changing as we begin to check off the boxes of accomplishments. Always remember to keep evolving the list as we grow. Achieving our purpose can definitely be daunting. Remember to lasso the moon and then refer back to our post The Proper Way of Setting Goals for a more in-depth look at how to create an effective action plan. Thanks for tuning in, and that is your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

About Me

Hi, my name is Blake. | body | So for my birthday this past December, I was given a Dad Calendar. For those of you that aren't aware of what these are, it is a book where each day is a new question to answer about yourself, for your little human. It's giving me lots of inspiration for The Son Journal since I looked at this section of Dapper Dad as one that I could later pass on to my little man to read. Articles in this section may vary in length, but the core concept is to pass along values from father to son. However, some of these entries require more than just the 2-inch by 3-inch piece of paper I'm allowed. Now, without further adieu, here goes today's entry from the Dad Calendar. Today's question was 'Have you ever felt hatred toward another human? Explain'. Wow! What a strong question this is! Hatred is such an intense word. This really stood out to me because I strive to ensure that hatred never enters my little man's heart. So many times we are quick to anger because something is different in another person, or we feel wronged, or things didn't go our way. While my mini-me is only three, there are so many things that I know are going to make him feel anger, or be upset with someone else. Heck, just this evening he became angry at me because I asked him to get some water after we were playing superheroes. If I really think back through my life, and the times that I have ever felt distaste towards someone, I would like to think that I never truly felt hatred. Regardless of the position I was in or how I may have felt wronged. So here goes my attempt at my open letter for my son: Hey buddy! There will come times in your life that you may feel as though someone has done you wrong. Unfortunately, that is the world we live in, and this world was not made to be fair. Always remember that life is so much larger than you are allowing yourself to see in that tunnel vision moment. The sun will rise tomorrow, and you'll get out of your bed to put your pants on the same way you did today. Never let hatred into your heart, as you are a true gentleman. Love Your Dapper Dad! |

| body | Well! It's been a while, but the latest article in the Dapper Dad Gazette is up! Imagine you finally have the chance to approach that special someone you have had your eye on, or that you are in an elevator with the head honcho of your work. What will the first lines out of your mouth be? It can be difficult to really try and come up with the perfect line to strike up a conversation. And if that wasn't nerve-racking enough, how do you keep the conversation going? What if the person doesn't give me much to go on? This can certainly happen, but many times people take the small talk as something that is just filler because you can't often think of things to say. While there can be some validity to that, I like to take a slightly different school of thought. I like to think that it is really more of us trying to find something to connect on. Sometimes people are just shy and can't think of ways to respond. This is where you help them come along. How's about a story?... Let me take you back to yesteryear when I was in my early twenties. I had just started a job where I was answering phone calls all day, isn't the story starting off wonderfully! So here I am, with a ding in my ear 80-100 times a day, speaking to customers, I had the mantra - time is money. Let me get this customer off this phone call because I need to earn the keep of my pay. Boy was I wrong in that situation! I was lucky enough to work for an employer who didn't seem to care about how long my phone call took, but rather how great of an experience could I provide for that customer. Shocking, I know! But I was later coached that I needed to have conversations and make it seem as though they weren't calling a normal customer service rep. Fast forward several years, and while life is much happier not having the 100 dings in my ear every day, it was a great experience to help transform my conversational skills. I mean is there really ever a smaller conversation than calling a customer service rep? Now that the story is over, how about we dive into a few tips & tricks that can help with keeping the conversation going. In other words, create the witty small talk to and fro!

Start with a small gesture

A simple "Hi, how are you?" or "Can you believe the weather lately?", is a great piece to get the conversation started.

Move to something about an observation you have made

If you live in an apartment building together, ask how long they've lived in the area or how they like it. Maybe consider asking something about a book or article they are carrying. This shows attention to detail and could lead to an entirely amazing story about a fine piece of jewelry or a new book for your library.

Ask an open-ended question

If you love adventure then ask about where their favorite place they have visited and why. Who knows, it could turn out to be yours too. Asking open-ended questions will force someone to provide details that can lead to more questions and more conversation.

Listen and respond

Make sure you are actually paying attention to what you are asking or saying. Then respond to that. Nobody likes to have a conversation with themselves and certainly don't want to feel like they are wasting their time or breath.

Look for the heater right down the middle

I mean I have to get in a baseball analogy. For those not so baseball inclined, a heater right down the middle is a fastball that you are sure to hit a home run off of. In speaking terms, this is something that you are clearly able to connect with and add excitement back to the conversation.

Now see, small talk doesn't have to be all that bad. Next time you find yourself in a small talk spot, try a couple of these pointers to keep it going. Thanks for tuning in today folks, and that's your Daily Dose of Dapperness!
https://yt3.ggpht.com/-NH2QuTB3SGU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/278ZwgELT1Y/s200-c-k-no-mo-rj-c0xffffff/photo.jpg

About Me

Hi, my name is Blake.
