Either way, I have deemed this poem sufficiently entertaining, and feel that it warrants posting for ~~the world~~ my neglected viewership to see – satiate yourselves.   \n<br><hr><br>\n\n# <center> William Hurlock Thorough Esquire </center><br>\n\n<center>What of life if not for it dire,<br>For William Hurlock Thorough Esquire?</center>\n\n<center>Befitting the demons to his odious lies,<br>Are the thoughts that he thinks through his glass bottom eyes;<br>A debaucherous crook, and a pitiful waste,<br>Every sip that he sups has a bitterful taste.</center>\n\n<center>The ruffles and tails adorning his pelt,<br>Are ladened so strict to be pinned by a belt.<br>But, undone are the prim to be proper and well,<br>When taken is all from their ghostly white shell.</center>\n\n<center>He has tried every chair to a creek and a moan,<br>For his heart would be light if not made of it stone.<br>…And the night being dark, and so taking of good,<br>Steals from himself all the things that it should.</center>\n\n<center>One would think of him rich if it weren't for him poor,<br>For the shine of his coin lights him dull to the core.<br>His hardening skin yields not to his hope,<br>That his neck only snap by the noose of his rope.</center>\n\n<center>In the morning's parade; the news of the land.<br>The town crier calls from his stark, wooden stand:</center>\n<center>*\"What of his death, if not for it dire,<br>For William Hurlock Thorough Esquire?”*</center><br>\n\n\n<center>https://steemitimages.com/0x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmYc7PFSadzppojJiZmG1mNJNjjycvaRHU6VonRPMd4pXM/Ornament.png</center>\n<br>\n## “Oh, Louis, Louis…still h-whining!”<hr>\n\n**While it most certainly isn’t my best,** I do enjoy this poem; it’s a simple read and it holds no ambiguities. It’s a well-rounded narrative, with a pleasing rhyme scheme, that feels clunky but charming. I didn’t see you there, you shouldn’t snea'… <hr>\n\n**Welcome, travellers, to my shop of musical delights!** Don't touch that!…you’ll make it dirty. While you have all been ageing, I have been coursing through the planes of existence, a wandering miasma of human intellect, and discovered yet another audible wonder.   \n\n**Now, I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is no!**\n\n**This song is a warming blanket of sincerity** and asks for nothing more than an ear to bear it. Join me on a journey to discover a bonding band of boys, banded by a band, branded, boisterously as [_The Band_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Band).\n<br>\n## ‘I pulled into Nazareth.’<hr>\n\n**'The Band' was a Canadian-American roots rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario.** The members of The Band first came together as [Ronnie Hawkins'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Hawkins) (rockabilly singer) backing group - the Hawks - in which they joined one by one between 1958 and 1963.\n\n**They were later commissioned to back Bob Dylan**, and in having to leave their name behind, where then introduced as ‘The Band’ – although the members didn’t warm to the idea, the name later grew on them. \n\n**The debut of their first album [‘Music from big pink’](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_from_Big_Pink) (1968)**, was well received and included three songs of which were co-written by Dylan himself.\n\n**…But we don’t wanna give you that!**\n\n**One of the songs featured on that album was later used in the film Easy Rider** which, thereafter, became one of their most well-known songs - it is known simply as [‘The Weight’.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Weight) \n\n<hr>\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFqb1I-hiHE\n<hr>\n\n## My tympanic membranes?! …They hear such wonderful things!<hr>\n\n**So, the song begins with the two of the main instruments: Guitar (opening phrase), and Drums.** The Bass Guitar follows, entering just after the very last bass-drum hit on beat four – “dum…dum-dum-bass”. The Piano does the same - sneaking in with a very comfortable rolling [arpeggio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpeggio). Now that the instruments and overall tone have been established, in comes the singer, with his most humbling vocal - proving that character often outperforms quality. \n\n**The only other instruments that have yet to enter are the backing vocals** of the other band members; these are mostly heard through the chorus line but, oh, what a sound! I especially adore the climbing piano line just before the chorus kicks in. \n\n**Every instrument is crystal clear in the mix** and if you really pay attention you can switch your focus between them. Also, pay attention to how the track is spaced within the [stereo field](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo_imaging); each instrument really balances well against the other – something that should be a given, but, you would be surprised. Take some time to really appreciate those vocal harmonies that build on each phrase and, finally, have a read of the lyrics – they’re very well written and tell a story about the impact of a town called Nazareth, Pennsylvania on a young [Robbie Robertson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_Robertson).<br>\n\n<br> \n\n## <center>Most well written verse:</center>\n\n####  <center>I picked up my bags, I went looking for a place to hide,<br>When I saw old Carmen and the Devil, walking side by side.<br>I said, \"Hey, Carmen, c'mon, let's go downtown\",<br>She said, \"I gotta go, but my friend can stick around\"</center>\n\n<br>\n\n## ‘You put the load right on me.’<hr>\n\n**Maybe you have heard this song before**, maybe you haven’t, nevertheless, I hope that you may now see it with fresh ears - having had it forced back upon. \n\n**I love this song.** I think it is wholesome, honest, and it says exactly what it needs to in every way that music allows. Just kidding, I have been working two jobs and failing my MA – [Insert cheeky grin…and lager, lots of lager].\n\n\n## Anyyyyway.<hr>\n\n**Meanwhile, in my lair, I have been crafting a new poem.** Now, the poems I have posted thus far have just been some old junk that I found in my ~~neighbour’s~~ attic - writings of a younger mind and a younger soul. Now that life has damaged me a little more, I feel that my creativity may have reached depths that even Captain Nemo himself couldn’t fathom. \n\n**So, here is a fresh poem, straight from the gooey insides of my mind,** and dripping with all the efforts I should be putting into something more useful. Nevertheless, find your love, your loss, and your days to be, in this poem – enjoy. \n\n<br><hr><br>\n\n# <center>A Foreign Pulling</center><br>\n\n<center>It's louder now, that thing you seek;<br>A foreign pulling week by week.<br>Those dreadful beasts on pollards perch;<br>Their beckoned beaks for feathers search.</center> \n<center>Be not as them that caw and crow;<br>You know not where those feathers go.<br>Your barbs and vanes, such that you truss,<br>Belay your name by calamus! </center>  \n<center>But still insist of you your plan;<br>With talons bearing all they can.<br>Nothing gained in of your rest -<br>Your song to rot around that nest. </center>  \n<center>The plump and perry of that fruit,<br>Is over tree and over root.<br>There are no leaves nor twigs to bear,<br>For it is not your home out there.</center>\n<center>Yet you wait for winding winds,<br>Or chances few that nature brings.<br>Be thick in air you winged thing,<br>Make scared the life to which you cling.</center>  \n<center>Heed that calling deep and down,<br>For it is calling louder now.<br>That foreign, pulling thing you seek<br>Is calling stronger week by week. </center><br>\n\n<center>https://steemitimages.com/0x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmYc7PFSadzppojJiZmG1mNJNjjycvaRHU6VonRPMd4pXM/Ornament.png</center>\n<br>\n\n## Why am I now blind? <hr>\n\n**Because of my excellence, of course!**<br>\n\n**…and, of course, I am kidding.** However, I do have an affinity with this poem, and while you may be thinking “…but Dan, it’s your poem, of course you have an ‘affinity’ with it”, not every writer connects with their writing; writing can sometimes be just that – writing. \n\n**I like this poem** because it speaks about…oh, wait…<br>\n\n## <center>[Spoiler Alert!]</center><br>\n\n**…it speaks about the things you never did;** the fears you never conquered; the dreams you never lived - all of these things that ‘pull at you’ with every passing year. Things you hope for your children to have, and for them to fly where you have fallen. You excuse these things for ‘a lack of readiness’, or in waiting for ‘the better time’ – there will be none. It is fear that rules you and, in old age, that will pass to regret. If you have an opportunity - take it. If you have the time – use it. I was in two minds as to whether to publish this poem based on its superior sense of pomp - I think it rides that line very dangerously. Speaking of loneliness…we all have that someone in our lives that makes us feel as though the world were but half a place before they came into it; someone that, though not possible, you had felt to have known all along, yes?<br>\n\n**Well, in reality, some of us do not have that person**; we are a soft crescent shape waiting to be met with a likened piece that, more often than not, fits well, but just that – well…like some kind of sad and cruel Jaffa Cake of life.<br>\n\n**I too share in the social ubiquity of searching for that long lost someone** that I have felt to have known more than most. So, what have I done with my devilishly charming nihilism? Well, I have written a poem; It is one of my shortest, but I believe that it will be relevant in the eyes of most. With this in mind, I'm not saying that everyone is ugly, more that it takes a certain *je ne sais quoi* about someone to keep us from wanting to look anywhere but upon them.    \n\n<br>\n\n## Egh…anyway.<hr>\n\n**Whether you have already found the person you are looking for**, or you have just begun traipsing through the undergrowth of singledom, I wish you well in your journey and that love may keep you.
