| body | Recently a friend of mine visited me in the Holy Land. We rented a car for a few days and went on some trips to the main cities and canon places. On one day we arrived in Jerusalem. I showed my Christian friend one of the most memorable places in Israel, "Yad Vashem" - The World Holocaust Remembrance Center. We've already been to the other symbolic and cult places during her first visit to Israel.

After that we decided to watch the sunset from the Mount of Olives or Mount Olivet, the one where Jesus Christ prayed before he was arrested. It's a stunning location with amazing vies of the city. Unfortunately, it's in the Eastern Jerusalem which means that it's situated on territories, a part of the land that was occupied (according to UN resolution only) by Israel in 1967. It's kind of Arab hood where even today Jews actually are not pleased with sincerity and hospitality. First, we missed the highway exit that needed and then I saw an increasing number of signs pointing the way to Ramallah, starting worrying. My friend was not kind of frightened person and in general she is not very familiar with local realities and history.

So, we arrived at the mount, passed something like an observation deck and we drove a little deeper into the mountains. Number of police cars and people with weapons was growing exponentially. I realized that we drove to the heart of the Arab neighborhood. I saw amount of bald noisy people, mostly men and no signs in Hebrew anywhere around. (Without any prejudices, I hope it's clear for you that it's not the nest place for a touristic visit for a bespectacled Jewish boy and a sexy European looking girl in short shorts and a t-shirt without bra under). All in all we launched the car and dumped out. We sat down on the white stones of the garden on the hillside in front of the evening city. The sun was already setting like a blood red spot. At 7:30pm an evening Muslim prayer began. As we got there through the Eastern part the mosques and minarets were illuminated by green light and the song of muezzin filled the city. The Old City was full of the lights and we lighted the joint following it. So, it was highly (if you know what I mean) sunset. Frankly, I would think twice the next time to move a driver who doesn’t familiar with location through the Eastern Jerusalem.

|

| body | Just found out an extraordinary staff while scrolling fb newsfeed after working day. This is a cool peace-making project from Middle East. To be brief, I'd better quote what they write about themselves on their website: "The YaLa Academy’s Aileen Getty School of Citizen Journalism brings together leading journalists and new media experts to train Middle Eastern and African youth in basic journalism techniques, photo- and video-journalism and 21st Century activism. Building upon an initiative launched in 2014 in partnership with the U.S. Institute of Peace, this online program is a unique combination of new media training and peacebuilding experience. In regions where media is too often a tool for nationalism, division and fear, YaLa citizen journalists are being empowered to express themselves and tell a very different kind of story." After that I've read the amazing feedback of a friend of mine who was on this School in 2015. She was like WOW DAT'S AMAZING I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW IT BROADENED MY HORIZONS and so on and...

I clicked the link. As I knew from my previous experience (once I took part in a leadership summit for Jewish Youth Movement 17-30 years old), I was prepared that now I must write a lot of staff and bla bla. But even the bla-bla can be serious. Especially, when you try to speak on issues like peace-making in the Middle East. Even this combination of words ad aims sounds like stupid joke for the majority. But, as I love journalism, love break down barriers and actually love Middle East as I started live there, I decided to take part in this. In the main body of application I should have written 2 small texts. I will bring them below. I sincerely ask all grammar nazis and Middle East conflicts experts to go fuck theirself somewhere not in Steemit. I look forward to your feedback and of course I hope to take part in this school. If my application will be approved, I would start another series of stories. This time on peace-making in the Middle East issues. I think it's gonna be awesome, steemers!

Why do you want to join the YaLa Citizen Journalism Program?
Life in Israel has started for me from reflecting on the new identity, which differs from the environment that I came from originally. It started from the question "what is to be a Jew?" and "who is a Jew?" and broadened to other aspects of my new life: new economical or political logic and tendencies need to be cleared. Many issues that seemed unimportant in your home country (like feminism, xenophobia or human rights) became the foundation stone of a new lifestyle. All what you knew before has to be reviewed. And it should be reviewed not only in philosophical or metaphysical way of understanding. You should also fill the gaps in your education, which couldn’t be covered before, because of a lack of material and right people around you. After all, through realizing these key points for yourself, you will be more prepared and competent to share your own view and the views of others from the perspective of a third side, or from the first face, where it is necessary and appropriate.
Write a few paragraphs on one of these topics: Identity, Peace-Building, Gender-Equality, Social Justice.
Each state in the Middle East put at the forefront the nationalism principle as one of the main. However, even in such a conservative environment as Israel, Algeria, Iraq, Syria and other states, the definition of a national identity seems blurred in many cases. Even the common name of Israel – Jewish State – always leaves more questions than answers. Especially, in the situation when people, usually called Jews in the countries of their origin, move to Israel where in many cases they are treated as goys or fake Jews. And the borders of domestic nationalism broaden even on them and more and more often it looks like a banal fascism and violation of rights. By this I mean Russian minority in Israel. Thousands of people moved to Haretz according to the Law of Return. To be Jew formally and to be Jew in Israeli society in reality turned out to be very different for many Russian Jews. As many organizations started their activity on the territory of former Soviet Union and in Israel itself, a lot of public discussions on the issue appeared. With the development of technologies and platforms, from year to year people could observe the expansion of the scope of discussions. They became younger with time and the people who took part in it became more educated and open-minded. The question remained the same: what is to be a Jew? It has never been a matter of your intellectual or physical ability to formulate the strict definition of the phenomena. It couldn't also be a matter of feeling or emotion. The thing is that there are no rules for such discussions except for the laws of logic and banal intellectual hygiene to avoid ethical and moral conflicts (how naive, isn't it?). I recently formulated kind of a summary for myself: to be a Jew is to reflect on the theme of what is to be a Jew. Of course, some religious guys wouldn't be so ambiguous and unspecified on such issues. Fortunately for them, the answers on the challenge are already given in the holy books without any chance to be interpreted. I'm not rabbi or imam, but I still got my own thinking on the issue. And who doesn't?
http://upliftconnect.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/sulha-conversation.jpg

Stay tuned!

|

| body | Israel, also known as Holy Land is a real Wonderland for many people. For one - it's a holy place, for others - it's a 3000 years old museum under the sky, for other people it's a gay-capital or club center in the Middle East. Anyway, this place constantly throws up surprises. After living my first year there I defined how to love and feel this place in the right way. To start live in Israel is like to go through your first LSD-trip. After first experience you can realize if you want to keep doing it (or repeat at least) or you want to give up this shit and never try even once more. So, your trip-sitter or the one who offers you your first stamp will always tell you a lot before the trip. He would try to tell more good stuff and less bad about your potential feelings, but all you knew before using it for the first time - is just the peak of an iceberg. Same with Israel. Forget everything you knew about this religious, historical, geographical place. Just go on a trip with it. Your acid-trip would become a nightmare if your settings were gloomy or depressive. I think the best sign not to trip is realizing discomfort or negative background before you do it. Just postpone this experience for a better moment, if you are not sure. On the contrary, if you know what you want, you psychologically prepared (like there is no thoughts on your "ex" or smth in your conscious or else) and you are totally opened for what you gonna see - do the step and try it. If you are ready to take this country deep inside of you, you will be amazed how different and colorful it is. It's so far from black and white standards, from good and bad. It can become a long-life trip, full of miracles and positive vibes. In other case it will become a bad-trip with endless peak of drug parish, with infinite social and economical issues that you'll face there, with total misunderstanding of life stream. If this place was literally a drug , it would be definitely some serious gourmet shit for well-prepared psychonauts. So, it's all about the set. Think positively. My glass is always half whiskey. http://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/gourmet_shit_pulp_fiction-gap.jpg |

| body | One of the first domestic things that I noticed in Israel was the fact that you can find nowhere this tough, nearly pasteboard toilette paper. With such kind of this staff you won't be able neither touching intimate places, nor even blow one's nose. In Russia they put this shitty paper in all public toilettes: in parks, universities, chip cafes, libraries. Sometimes this paper is so much lousy that you even can mention small letters from the newspapers or tiny chips, which were recycled to create another one fucked up 50 meters-roll of wooden paper. In Israel, the toilette paper is nearly the same in all places. Not very thick, just a two-layer, but always soft, white, with a wide sleeve in the middle. I was provided by my sister with the gourmet Israeli analogue of "Zewa deluxe", it was three-layered, can you believe! Without any fragrance unfortunately but with a washable sleeve. I'm sure you've been inspired as I've been, when you saw these blessed and happy faces of people from weird ads about these washable sleeves. One day, I saved around 6 sleeves in a row and one washed them meditatively one by one. My face lit up with pleasure, and the soul was filled with great reverence as all these paper-sleeves were disappearing in this water circulation, carried away to the toilet Valhalla. https://media.giphy.com/media/14v8I96yzNdfZS/giphy.gif |

And showed me Steemit. As I wrote articles for some Russian media and wrote post for a number of networks, he knew I'd be interested in a new platform. An idea of kinda personal blog always pleased me but all the time I just dropped that and "then i got high". These days I'm in exciting status of immigrant. But for youth with Jewish roots from all over the world the moving to Israel is called "alliyah" or "repatriation". If you'll ask me then, I'll tell you my "jewish" story later, but briefly, I formulated the answer to the question "what is to be Jew?" like that - to be a Jew is to reflect all the time on the question "what is to be a Jew?". Anyway, that's a long and ornate story. Like many other stories which involve Jews. 10 months in the Middle East, the place that you heard of in the context of wars, blood and terrorism. And now you are totally involved. Like you became the participant of news which your parents watched in 90's when you was born. But maybe for even more people there is much more madness and despair to live in Russia then in Israel. I don't know. I am too biased in. Maybe in Russia I treated my life even more philosophically. Ha, It's not surprising if you spent 5 fucking years studying western philosophy attending special attention to German classic philosophy. Before moving to Moscow from a Russian province, I really "get used to the streets". Reading rap, smoking weed, and as there is a popular ironic quotation in Russian networks claims: "we became guys, that as a child we were told to fear". This shit sounds completely funny and absurdly when you start counting my eyes. Yes, the spectacles on my nose doubled them when I had a fight with my classmate when I was 12. Since then some of my close friends decided that it will be ok to call me 4-eyed. At the age of 17 I decided to try myself in Moscow. I liked my chances and entranced the faculty of philosophy. Weird staff for a 17-year old young man if he wants to earn some money in his future life, isn't it? Yes, despite all the intellectual values ruling in modernity, this is not fucking mainstream doing philosophy, especially in Russia. Between the lectures of a crazy assistant professor who claimed Plato and Aristotle as "faggots" and an ultra-right professor whose eyes started shining brighter when he narrated about German history of 30-s, I lived 5 years in dorm making friends from all the Russian cities working in crazy places like Rublevka, where Russian oligarchs live or a local TV-company where I was a reporter in a youth TV-show. But then, in 2015 happened what now in Israel we call "Putin's alliyah", when a social group of young people named "the creative class" (creacles) started leaving the country. Everything is changed. My lifestyle, my new job (this is one of the most fashionable in Israel 4 real, will tell you later). I also bought new spectacles before left. They are chameleons and getting darker in the sun. But that's another story yet. Nice to meet you ^^ |
