      "body": "Have you ever had someone apologize to you, and then afterwards get the sense thay they were not sincere? Or do you ever get pressured to forgive someone, when you know that they don't deserve it? When Sinead O'Connor sang about the Irish famine, she rapped about the philosophy of forgiveness, and here I take her words of wisdom, and formalize them into five steps. \nThe first step of forgiveness is an honest admission of guilt. Here, the offender knows exactly what they did wrong, and accepts the fact that their behaviour was unacceptable. This is a remarkable realization, because anyone can make a mistake, but only a developed person will come to terms with it. Just like the man who falls down, anyone can fall, but respect is given to the man or woman who picks themselves up. The next step is the apology. The person apologizing must not only utter the words, but also find a time and space to deliver the apology, and ensure that the offended person is ready to recieve it. The apology needs to specific, and precisely address the behaviour. For example, if someone says to you that they apologize for 'anything that they might have done to you' - this is not a sincere apology, because it does not specify the exact behaviour. The third step in the process of forgiveness, is grieving. Humans are emotional beings, and after a transgression, there needs to be a time for recovery and healing. The fourth step is understanding. The offended needs to understand what has transpired, in order to make sense of the bigger picture. This is where learning from experience takes place. The person trespassed against needs to reassess their hierarchy of loyalties, and their arrangement of values, so to minimize the consequences of such a betrayal in the future. An opening question could be: \"Must we settle for a society that tolerates so many homeless people at the cores of our cities?” The Cambridge homeless situation is not as drastic as it is in Kitchener apparently, but the Cambridge facilities do support Kitchener's overflow, and so it remains a community concern.\n\nSome people argue that there are facilities and resources in place to take care of the homeless, and that we as citizens ought not to get involved, but let those trained professionals handle the task.  However through speaking with people who are either homeless, or have experienced homelessness, it becomes evident that there are still many problems with the current social service programs.  This is not an effort to undermine the progress made by those who work in the field, rather, it is an effort to shed light on the obstacles faced by those who seek and also those who provide, social services.  These obstacles can be relatively easy to rectify with a little ingenuity and cooperation between social service recipients, community volunteers, and designated officials.  Thanks to the Occupy Movement, the middle class and social service seekers have been able to mingle, thus allowing for the dissemination of information regarding the obstacles faced by many who seek social assistance.  Dysfunction and mental illness affects many among the homeless, however there are also those that are active in their community - a sign of promise for citizenship restoration.  By taking the time to speak with seekers and providers of welfare and shelter services, one can discover which key issues need addressing.  A comprehensive welfare system needs to take into account all of the issues.\n\nIt appears as though we the citizens of our communities are going to have to take this task on ourselves.  Given the current state of affairs, the responsibility for the welfare of all the people living in the region rests on us, the citizens and taxpayers. If we continue to rely on the current social assistance programs, we will continue to endure a system failing to reach its potential.  We have the ability to house and employ all of these people if we act intelligently and creatively. We do not need more tax money, only better efficiency.  Obviously many homeless people are sick and require care before becoming functioning members of society, but it is worth the cost of their restoration according to literature by academic scholar and psychologist B. F.       "body": "What can we do to make the world a better place?  When I first met Jenniefer of Blue Sky Horse Radio I realized that there are many issues that motivate people to act.  A problem that affects someone personally gives them added energy to resolve, or at least attempt to solve the problem.  In Jen’s case, it was her love for horses that motivated her to go on a campaign to raise awareness of the horse slaughter industry that is beginning to flourish in Western Canada.  This is indeed a worthy cause to get behind, but what about human trafficking?  What about the destruction of many ecosystems so that a few businesses can profit?  There are many issues that are worthy of our attention, and various groups in the K-W region are attempting to address some of these problems from a grass roots level.\n\nCommunity and political activism has been around for many decades, and their successes have been a mixed bag.  The problems of our society are complex, and their roots, elusive. Occupy Waterloo Region attempted to spread public awareness of our corrupt monetary system; Transition K-W offers climate change adaptation tool kits to help citizens learn how to conserve energy, and transition to more sustainable ways of living. Waterloo Peer Interest Research Group attempts to educate the general public on human rights violations occurring all over the world.  Activist groups still missing in the Waterloo Region include a ‘We Are Change’ KW chapter, a ‘Thrive’ chapter and a Free State project.\n\nAffecting change on a global level may seem like a tumultuous task but I think some progress has been made through the efforts of activist groups such as those mentioned here.\n\nGandhi said:  “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”  Deepak Chopra defines success as:  “The continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals.  Success is the ability to fulfill your desires with effortless ease.”\n\nFor a community activist group to be successful on a group level and on an individual level, I believe that these advices by these two gentlemen should be heeded.\n\nAny activist group, is simply a group of human beings.  A group of individuals coming together, each with their unique qualities.  For any group of people to be able to communicate and work together effectively, certain social factors must be in place.  There needs to be an atmosphere of warmth, and belonging.  There needs to be a positive element for every attendee so that they will wish to come back regularly to participate in the group activities.\n\nAlthough this socialization may be necessary to create cohesion in the group, it may also serve as a limit to the group’s progress.  Once one is satisfied on an emotional level with their societal environment, their desire to affect change in the society dampens.  Presently, this is the paradox happening within community activist groups.",

      "body": "Joseph Campbell sought to unite the entire human race with a common ideology.  Having been raised Catholic, Campbell eventually became interested in other ideological philosophies.  Using the work of Carl Jung, Adolf Bastian, Heinrich Zimmer and others, Campbell was able to compile a unifying portrait of human society.  The conclusion reached, in the end, is that art, in an advanced technological society, serves as the new spiritual motivator of mankind. \nBefore globalization and advanced technology, religion would suffice in keeping the tribal group unified and functional.  But with the technological progression of the human race, and because of the awareness of other ways of interpreting the world, in addition to the advancement of science, specifically astronomy and archaeology, traditional religious explanations and lessons simply lost their ability to quench mankind’s curiosity.\nOften it is literature, film or music that inspires people.  It is true that many people still find comfort and motivation in ancient religious texts, but art, is the truly universal motivator.  It is inclusive of everyone and everything, not just one particular tribe or ethnicity.\nEquating religious symbols with signals of the natural environment, Campbell demonstrates how religious truths can be real, even when apparently contradicting tenets of science:  “Whenever a myth has been taken literally, its sense has been perverted; but also, reciprocally, that whenever it has been dismissed as a mere priestly fraud or sign of inferior intelligence, truth has slipped out the other door.”\nCampbell connects his explanation of the innate releasing mechanism to art:  “Human experience and human art, that is to say, have succeeded in creating for the human species an environment of sign stimuli that release physical responses and direct them to ends no less effectively than do the signs of nature the instincts of the beasts.”\nA basic education in modern times really ought to include the major archaeological discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries.  In his book ‘Primitive Mythology’ Campbell writes:\n“The two learned disciplines from which the lineaments of a sound comparative science might first have emerged were those of the classics and the bible.  However, a fundamental tenet of the Christian tradition made it appear to be an act of blasphemy to compare the two on the same plane of thought; for, while the myths of the Greeks were recognized to be of the natural order, those of the bible were supposed to be supernatural.  Hence, while the prodigies of the classical heroes (Herakles, Thesus, Persusus, etc) were studied as literature, those of the Hebrews (Noah, Moses, Joshua, Jesus, Peter, etc) had to be argued as objective history; whereas, actually, the fabulous elements common to the two precisely contemporary, Eastern Mediterranean traditions were derived equally from the preceding, bronze-age civilization of Mesopotamia – as no one before the development of the modern science of archaeology could have guessed.”\nJoseph Campbell’s important findings can be accessed by video in large part thanks to Bill Moyers.
