| body | https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/1*OscXEvyzx6W1akRwUTCuZA.jpeg Sometimes building a great business is not so much about being creative and innovative but about filling an empty space in the market. That’s kind of what happened to us with **AK Frames**. Here’s a little background: I’m going to talk about drone racing. For those who are not familiar with this fast growing nerdy trend, these are basically quadcopters (and even tri- and hexacopters) equipped with an FPV camera that provides live video feed to the pilot, who struggles to run across different obstacles and environments as fast as possible without crashing. You can find some videos here. I had been flying my new racing drone for some months when this idea came to my mind. My friend Asier and I would meet over the weekends to set some circuits up and have fun together. But more recently, we had been spending a lot of time discussing about different configurations to make our drones faster and more agile. So we sat down and wrote a list of must-haves for the perfect racing quadcopter. We both agreed that the most important part -and the one we could have access to- was the frame (think of a car chassis): the structural support of all the components. After a little research, I couldn’t find any frames that met our strict performance criteria. We started sketching a few concepts and throwing some lines around on AutoCAD. ## The design I started testing different shapes and configurations on AutoCAD we printed at our home-made 3D printer, which isn’t perfect but provides us a nice way to put all the parts together and see how it works. Once we found a design we liked, we printed it on better quality, and Asier gave it a beautiful paint coat that looked extremely cool. We decided to take it to the first Spanish national meet of drone racing pilots to ask for advice and show our work to our friends. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/1*UqZWyURtEB6bFsak7e-wSw.jpeg Thanks to their feedback and the knowledge we were acquiring reading different forums -yep, they still exist- and blogs, we modified the design again and added new features I won’t spend time describing. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1200/1*9nBjJdIkiCoxpTBg-5yKoA.jpeg With the help of Luxion KeyShot I was able to do some renderings and send them to some friends. To our surprise, they all seemed to like it and started asking for a real carbon fiber product. Alberto, who was also interested in drone racing frames and owned an aerial filmography company offered us his help and his workshop to produce a fiberglass prototype. We couldn’t resist and visited him that same afternoon. The CNC cut turned out incredible! We took some photos with our phones and opened a thread at a Spanish forum showing that to the people. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*sG3ziqWLN7Qbkx8Bqz5EUw.png As a designer I couldn’t prevent myself from designing a little logo and some branding assets to lighten the thread a bit more. ## Manufacturing and samples In the meanwhile, we started negotiating with different carbon fiber manufacturers from Alibaba about samples, pricing, shipping costs, etc. I’ll write a more detailed post on this process soon. If we were to produce this frame we would need the exact same quality we were hoping to get for ourselves. Here’s one of the most crucial points of every product’s success: Whatever you make must be something you want to use for yourself. We contacted them and they seemed to understand the project and were interested in helping us. Later we found that they were also working for one of the highest quality competitors, which was calming for us. For the first batch, we ordered 6 units that were already pre-sold to our friends at factory cost in exchange for a detailed review of every aspect of its performance. It took two long weeks to arrive. However, once it was there the result was super satisfying. Building my own physical product was a dream come true. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*Dt36CDK-C17WaqE40mndHw.jpeg Badass carbon fiber quality ❤. Note some intentional variations from the previous design. The production price was still pretty high, although the Chinese sales manager promised to revise it in future orders according to the quantity. ## Pre-sells By the time of arrival, we had already opened a pre-order thread in the same forum to see how many people would be interested on it. Surprisingly, we received over 2000 views and 40 requests in less than 3 days. In my opinion, one of the facts that helped more was our reputation at that forum, since Asier and I love participating in the debate, watching and sharing other pilots’ videos… For the first time, we were allowed to truly use the sentence: “built by [x] for [x]”. As much as building a great product matters, it’s the actual selling that makes people want to buy it. And I can’t be more thankful for the work my partner did on the marketing side. He took the time to personally chat with every customer to hear their thoughts on the product and convince them to get one -or more- of our frames. Personal communication is key, specially when the customer is about to pay out a great amount of money. The response from the community was overwhelming, we had crossed the point of no return. Again, we emailed the Chinese manufacturer and they were extremely happy to hear the good news. In fact, they offered us a much lower price that made it all possible. Now, with a carbon fiber manufacturer and many possible customers, we did some maths. We put together all the costs, which break down like this: * Carbon fiber plates (8 in total) + shipping + customs taxes * Screws, hex bolts, aluminum spacers + respective shippings + customs taxes * Packaging, stickers, extra velcro straps * Shipping to each customer And it still excludes PayPal fees, replacements, lost packages… Certainly, we were scared of so many things that could go wrong. Once we had the numbers, we wrote a pre-sale post on the same thread which lead us to the next step. ## The actual selling We were concerned about some possible customers stepping down and canceling their pre-order, but luckily almost everyone who signed up on our listed finally ended up purchasing one frame. And some who weren’t on that list did as well. In total, we received 40 orders in 4 days before we decided to close the sale to speed things up and avoid losing too much customer money in case of failure. Some of our customers even ordered 3 or 4 frames per person! At that time we could already speak of success. However, we only had a bunch of dollars from our customers and nothing to give back. We placed a massive order to our manufacturer and he gave us an estimate date. Here’s where we encountered a big problem. We were hoping to send them to our customers weeks before the Spain Drone Nationals to allow them to bring our AK frames to the race. But the estimate date was too close to this event. Literally pooped our pants when they told us they’d be on holidays… https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/1*pTsYxKB5Pv7U6G4QbWEgtQ.jpeg After some -kind and respectful- pressing I was able to speed manufacturing up and receive the frames on time. Still, some screws and spacers were delayed and/or cancelled, so again things got quite tight. Even before all the orders were fulfilled some customers were contacting us to order more units. Unfortunately time was over and the race was too close. ## So… did you actually make it? Indeed we did! We went to the race with our own frames half-tested (Asier spent the night before the race assembling a few more, just in case) and some friends raced as well with them! Watching others fly with something you had done is the most uplifting feeling. I crashed in the top 64 heat and got eliminated, but I was still happy to see that 3 of the 8 pilots on that round were carrying our drone. The frame performance was incredible, beating in speed and corners some of the best pilots. Huge success! https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/1*pn4dvGkmBmjjqyMPUem2sw.jpeg ## Let’s talk about numbers. **The price we set left us little-to-none profit per frame**. Otherwise most of the sales wouldn’t have been possible. The logic here is that we wanted to promote our project and get known before launching other products, opening our doors to a bigger audience. We sold **each unit at a fixed cost of around $55**, in which we included an spare carbon fiber arm, some stickers, a velcro strap and shipping. As you can see, there’s no room for profit. Or is it? From our first calculations we had some reductions in price, lower custom taxes and shipping fees we were not expecting, and the spare units were sold a few weeks later for full profit. Money that we didn’t keep, of course. We included a bunch of other prototypes for testing in the huge order, whilst some money was spent on the brand. https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*goSzJSZ-VUvwiH_1d_6spg.jpeg |

| body | https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*eFu1Gurwt0eJdVNpEXkpPg.jpeg The story begins back in January 15, on my second last year of school. After feeling sick for a while, my parents decided to take me again to the hospital, for the 4th time in 2 months. It didn’t look like anything important, probably somewhat similar to a flu, but what bothered us is the relatively high frequency of each cycle. No one knew back then what was wrong with me. So my parents started investigating by themselves. They followed a long research, which concluded with a rare syndrome called PFAPA. The results were taken to a specialist, and their expectations were right. As you might be learning on Google right now, it’s not a serious disease, and in most cases it is cured as time goes through. But it was severe enough to knock me down for a whole week each month. I was given some treatments, but none of them seemed to work in the long term. Summer came by and I started to feel quite a lot better. Though I didn’t know yet what was to come. Last year of school arrived sooner than I expected -I assume that happens to all of us-, and the worst came along. As a sports lover, I was given the opportunity to play for a great football team here in my city, which made me quite happy. The school year started pretty well, school was demanding and I enjoyed that. Football requirements were high, and I also loved that. But it didn’t took long until my health started to complain about the high demands. By the end of the first term I got really sick. Missed most of exams, and had an awful time at home, unable to perform simple tasks like doing my homework, going for a walk, or even moving from bed to the dining room. I was feeling exhausted, sore, and mentally depressed. My football team was wondering why I didn’t show up, my friends and teachers were very concerned about my school performance and my family worried about my health. What had been knocking me down for a week or so over the past few months took me down for more than 3 weeks. ## The point of inflection. It was clear to me that something had to change in order to be able to finish my last year of school and try to increase my life quality. First of all, we decided to try a new medicine that seemed to have some success in similar cases. We were told that the effect should be noticeable within 2 months of treatment. In the meanwhile, I had some time to figure out how to fix my life. 1. **Exams** . I’m often told that I’m a perfectionist and nervous person. I strive to make the best out of me and give everything I can on anything I do. And that’s not always right. Most of the time, I found myself stressing too much days before exams or feeling unable to sleep because of the nerves. So my first labour was to try to relax when I studied, and not to worry so much about the results. It takes a lot of time and effort to accomplish, and I’m still learning how to perform best while calmed; however, it’s slowly starting to work. 2. **Sport** . Playing for a serious team was another reason that kept me nervous and stressed. So the right move was to leave it. It was one of the most challenging decisions I had ever taken, and definitely one of the best. I thought that if I loved playing football, I could manage to meet with some friends each weekend and play without any pressure. ‘You won’t be fit if you leave football’, they said. And that got me really angry. You can be fit it you really want to. I’ve set myself the goal to get in better shape than I was when I left football. 3. **Learning** . Tinkering had always been one of my passions as well. Designing, trying to launch small -and not so small projects-, building tiny Arduino bots… often helped me relax and focus on other things rather than just school and exams. But for the last two years, due to the lack of time and the higher demands I had almost forgotten about them. 4. **Enjoying my free time** . Since my last grave cycle in December, I’ve watched over 100 movies and 10 seasons of different TV series (Entourage, Happy Endings, House of Cards…). While getting shit done feels like nothing else in this world, killing some free time never hurts. ## What has changed As for now, I’ve noticed a considerable decrease of intensity on each successive cycle, leaving me with little symptoms such as light head-aches, some tiredness, and little-to-no increase of body temperature. Compared to the last period, that’s a win! On the other hand, I’m feeling much more active and cheerful than before. I wake up every morning motivated to go to class, meet with my colleagues and teachers and learn new things. And that’s reciproque, both friends and teachers have already noticed my now-uplifting character; which makes me even happier. As for the afternoons, I now spend some time everyday trying to break frontiers and learn things that intrigue me. I also work out almost every day, spend some time on YouTube, and devote myself to gain experience in my recent hobby: drone racing! But that’s not all; whenever I find the time I also pursue some of my personal projects. Here are some details on each topic: 1. I’ve taken up new topics like electronics, coding, social-networking, product design, physics… and want to get back to learning Chinese. These are all hobbies that always generated some interest on me, although I felt insecure to start with. As a highlight, last Friday I took part on the regional qualifier for the Physics Olympics in Spain, wish me luck with the results! :) 2. Working out has become an important aspect of my life. While I still feel unable to perform well one week every month, it doesn’t take me long to get back to normality. Running, cycling, doing musculature or even going for a walk are some of my favorites. Small doses sum up for a fit lifestyle. Whenever I can, I still play some football, but forgotten are those semi-professional matches in which I had to give it all. Exercise for joy, not for necessity. 3. I’ve been really attracted to some YouTubers like Casey Neistat, Gary Vee, or Justin Escalona to name a few. They upload videos on a daily basis covering a wide variety of topics around their life. I’ve found it a decent source of inspiration and advice to improve my lifestyle. And it doesn’t cost you four hundred bucks per session. 4. Drone racing is now my most venerable passion. Having free time on the weekends has allowed to set up small circuits with a squad of friends and pilots -unknown for me until the last few months- every sunday, or even travel to participate in different races across the country. There’s already a looong list of events I’m really looking forward to this year. I encourage everyone to get their hands dirty on this hobby, you won’t be disappointed! 5. Traveling. Oh traveling. My endless love for visiting new places that has been growing with me throughout my life. Again, having more time has allowed me to visit new places I’ve never been able to visit before. 6. My diet. The last but not least relevant aspect of my lifestyle has also been tremendously modified. Attracted by the traditional African and Asian cuisine, I’ve left my comfort zone to try new foods and tastes from different countries and cultures. Although I still eat meat and typical Spanish food, I now love having sushi and couscous for lunch, thai soup for dinner and lots -literally, lots- of soy sauce. Smoothies, fruits and vegetables have also made their way to the top list of my favorites. And without doubt I can confirm you that food has also been an aspect that has highly increased my level of happiness. Bugs, well… they are still on the bucket list. As you can see, much has changed in the past 3–4 months. It’s been a long journey, so far extremely worth. I hope to be able to keep exploring new aspects of my work-life balance in order to turn the worst year of my life into what will be for sure the best year ever. **Here’s for more to come**. PS: This article was written two years ago, but I found it could be inspiring to the Steemit community so I decided to share it here :) |

"body": "https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*eFu1Gurwt0eJdVNpEXkpPg.jpeg\n\nThe story begins back in January 15, on my second last year of school. They followed a long research, which concluded with a rare syndrome called PFAPA.\n\nThe results were taken to a specialist, and their expectations were right. As you might be learning on Google right now, it’s not a serious disease, and in most cases it is cured as time goes through. But it was severe enough to knock me down for a whole week each month. I was given some treatments, but none of them seemed to work in the long term.\n\nSummer came by and I started to feel quite a lot better. But it didn’t took long until my health started to complain about the high demands.\n\nBy the end of the first term I got really sick. What had been knocking me down for a week or so over the past few months took me down for more than 3 weeks.\n\n## The point of inflection.\n\nIt was clear to me that something had to change in order to be able to finish my last year of school and try to increase my life quality. First of all, we decided to try a new medicine that seemed to have some success in similar cases. We were told that the effect should be noticeable within 2 months of treatment. In the meanwhile, I had some time to figure out how to fix my life.\n\n1. It takes a lot of time and effort to accomplish, and I’m still learning how to perform best while calmed; however, it’s slowly starting to work.\n2. I’ve set myself the goal to get in better shape than I was when I left football.\n3. **Learning** . Tinkering had always been one of my passions as well. Designing, trying to launch small -and not so small projects-, building tiny Arduino bots… often helped me relax and focus on other things rather than just school and exams. But for the last two years, due to the lack of time and the higher demands I had almost forgotten about them.\n4. **Enjoying my free time** . Since my last grave cycle in December, I’ve watched over 100 movies and 10 seasons of different TV series (Entourage, Happy Endings, House of Cards…). While getting shit done feels like nothing else in this world, killing some free time never hurts.\n\n## What has changed\n\nAs for now, I’ve noticed a considerable decrease of intensity on each successive cycle, leaving me with little symptoms such as light head-aches, some tiredness, and little-to-no increase of body temperature. Compared to the last period, that’s a win!\n\nOn the other hand, I’m feeling much more active and cheerful than before. I wake up every morning motivated to go to class, meet with my colleagues and teachers and learn new things. And that’s reciproque, both friends and teachers have already noticed my now-uplifting character; which makes me even happier.\n\nAs for the afternoons, I now spend some time everyday trying to break frontiers and learn things that intrigue me. | body | This photo shares a story. A story that is not so much about color, joy and beauty, but about the truth of life. Last summer I photographed this girl sitting down over the stairs of Doi Suthep, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. What people often do not see here is the girl's expression. Please, take a look at her pose. Now I'm going to tell you the truth. This girl was alone outside the temple, waiting for tourists to take photos with her, and then ask them for money. What struck me most, is that given her young age, her mother (who was calmly sitting outside the stairs where she couldn't be seen with a beer in her hand) just stood there without even taking care of her daughter while she was forced to make money for her. The crocodile behind represented what I really saw on this scenery, much more than the pure colors and beauty of the capture instead. Isn't this some kind of prostitution? Was this kid aware of what she was doing? Shouldn't be this girl going to school instead? Sad photo, open story. |

| body | Dear Steemit members, I'm Dani. 19 year old Aerospace Engineering student from Spain. It's good to be here! I joined this community to learn from others and share my experiments, trips and anything people may find interesting. Currently, my three main passions are design, traveling and drone racing, so you'll find me often talking about any of these :) However, I'm also quite interested in crypto, engineering and the automotive industry. I started studying Aerospace Engineering last year, because I've always been a fan of technology & avionics. That's mainly why two years ago I bought my first racing drone and started training hard to become a decent drone racing pilot. Want to see how fun it actually is? Here are some videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHma8u3l3l4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQxFITNtT38 I'll be happy to share tutorials, examples and more videos with the community if you show some interest. If not, I'll still have fun sharing them along with many other things. Before I finish, I almost forgot about traveling! Early on, I decided that I wanted to visit one country per year of life. It may sound like a quite tedious goal to reach... I'm still over it! 21 countries so far and growing. You can see (and freely download) some of my favourite pictures on https://unsplash.com/@danialaez That's all for now, I don't want this post to be too long, just wanted to say hello to the community and introduce myself. :) Best, Dani |
