Here's a great extract from "The Quick Crop"Blog (www.quickcrop.co.uk/blog/polytunnel-gardening/) "Why Use a Polytunnel? Most importantly, a polytunnel will enable the gardener to grow fruit and vegetable plants that they would otherwise be unable to grow in their climate. They also extend your growing season so you can grow your favourite foods all year round. Temperatures, humidity, irrigation and ventilation can all be easily controlled via the wide range of polytunnel equipment commonly available. Polytunnels work out much cheaper to buy, maintain and install than greenhouses and are quite easy to put up and manoeuvre yourself. The polyethylene or polythene film most commonly used biodegrades naturally over a long period. It will generally last between 3 to 10 years depending on usage and site etc, before needing replacement." This weekend we started putting up a poly tunnel on the plot. We got the basic frame work up and all we need to do now is install the doors, a base rail to fix the cover and then obviously the cover. We actually only realised after we put the frame up, but we do need some foundations to fix the tubing. We have come up with a solution which we will explain in the next video. Hope everyone find this useful! Intro Music: https://soundcloud.com/coreygagne Other track: https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads Hope you enjoy and don't forget to like, share and subscribe! Super excited and can't wait to start planting them. We'll get into what seeds varieties we got when we plant them but in today's video I go over using excel spreadsheets to plan your plot. \n\nWe bought our seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue...Here's a great extract directly from their website:\n\n\"WHY GROW 'REAL SEED'?\nWe only supply Real, Open Pollinated seed. No Hybrids & no GM seed. Here's why:\n\nREAL SEED BREEDS TRUE, SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR OWN SEED.\nBUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY REASON . . . REAL VEGETABLE SEED IS BETTER:\nHybrid (\"F1\") seed is the result of a cross between two different , but heavily inbred parents. Seed you save from these plants will either be sterile or a give a whole mix of shapes and types, usually producing a poor crop.\n\nOnly the seed company knows what the parents are, thus only they can produce that particular variety. If you want to grow it, you have no other source - good for the seed companies but not for you! Small growers should be able to keep their own seeds, selecting each year the best plants most suitable for their own land and conditions.\n\nYes, there are a few exceptions, but in general, the hybrid seed business has been a public relations victory over the small grower. For example, you will soon see more and more hybrid leek seed offered to you. This is because the supermarkets have set incredibly rigid limits on leek size, and the only way to achieve this is through hybridising two inbred varieties, so all leek seed production is switching to hybrids.\n\nYou will be told that these new leeks are 'more uniform', 'straighter' and so on. But what about flavour and adaptability? People seem to forget that we want to eat & enjoy these things - food is not just a commodity!\n\nDespite common urban myths, there is no magic about hybrids. So-called \"hybrid vigour\" is the simple fact that good hybrid seed is better than bad real seed, and that sadly much of the real seed you get now has been badly maintained. But good real seed - which admittedly requires time, care and patience to produce and maintain - must, by virtue of the genetics of these things, be just as good, and in fact much more adaptable to different soils.\n\nThe key here is that it takes less manpower to make the hybrid seed, so the wholesale seed growers are much happier to let the old varieties fade away.\n\nAnd as for the cost of hybrid seed, this is another mystery. Hybrids are not made by hand. Yes, they were in the past, but not for many years now. Most hybrid pollination nowadays is done by chemical sprays, not hand pollination, so hybrid seed shouldn't be any more expensive than other seed. There may be a slight extra cost associated with the spraying, but it certainly doesn't justify the high prices and tiny packets some companies are offering.\n\nBasically, seeds are now bred for large industrial farms (which is where the money is) and you, the home grower, just get fobbed off with a few of the same thing. Modern advert copywriting sometimes tries to disguise this. So when you're offered something that's 'good for freezing', what they mean is that it was bred to ripen all at once for machine harvesting & you'll get a glut.\n\nHere are a few examples from other catalogues that we found: How about 'really uniform fruit' - which often means 'inbred for the supermarket, narrow genetic base, may not adapt to your soil'. Or 'straight long shanks' usually means 'bred to fit the packing machine.' Or the best one yet - 'Leafless peas - easy to find the pods' translates as 'much smaller yield (the plants have no leaves !) - but at least now we've got rid of the leaves we can harvest them with a combine.' What a sad situation this is, with marketing people rather than gardeners writing the descriptions in modern seed catalogues.\n\nIn summary, hybrid seed can indeed have advantages for the industrial-chemical farmer who wants to harvest all at once. But for the small home grower who wants a good yield over a long period, real seeds are usually more productive.\n\nThis has been shown time and time again, and we think that once you have tried the real open-pollinated varieties we have found, you will agree.\"\n\nGo check them out!\n\nI would recommend doing some planning especially when you have a lot of different varieties to plant. Let me know how you plan your plot.\n\nHope you enjoy and don't forget to like, share and subscribe! \n\nMusic by Not The King: https://soundcloud.com/coreygagne\n\nFOLLOW ME:\n\nYOUTUBE: https://goo.gl/RTjGAn\nFACEBOOK: https://goo.gl/N7W7jT\nSOUNDCLOUD: https://goo.gl/2cUKVz\nTWITTER: https://goo.gl/U8Y1QT\nINSTAGRAM: https://goo.gl/yQ7BdQ","tags":["allotements","gardening","urbanfarm","urbangarden"]},"_id":"1a319f5c5e2a6a2bbcdcf7d4c2c785f5"},"tags":["allotements","gardening","urbanfarm","urbangarden","dtube"],"app":"steemit/0.1","image":["https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmVNHztZ4rU3YgMdg8RV26nyku35T1JUC2ERfahfWBtuCK"],"links":["https://d.tube/#!/v/cynneth/jsdecwuw","https://soundcloud.com/coreygagne","https://goo.gl/RTjGAn","https://goo.gl/N7W7jT","https://goo.gl/2cUKVz","https://goo.gl/U8Y1QT","https://goo.gl/yQ7BdQ","https://ipfs.io/ipfs/Qmde38PFMju1m9ngLECtdVCVczvxnJtJL4SCKNiV9v9ro2"],"format":"markdown"}

Super excited and can't wait to start planting them. We'll get into what seeds varieties we got when we plant them but in today's video I go over using excel spreadsheets to plan your plot. \n\nWe bought our seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue...Here's a great extract directly from their website:\n\n\"WHY GROW 'REAL SEED'?\nWe only supply Real, Open Pollinated seed. No Hybrids & no GM seed. Here's why:\n\nREAL SEED BREEDS TRUE, SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR OWN SEED.\nBUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY REASON . . . REAL VEGETABLE SEED IS BETTER:\nHybrid (\"F1\") seed is the result of a cross between two different , but heavily inbred parents. Seed you save from these plants will either be sterile or a give a whole mix of shapes and types, usually producing a poor crop.\n\nOnly the seed company knows what the parents are, thus only they can produce that particular variety. If you want to grow it, you have no other source - good for the seed companies but not for you! Small growers should be able to keep their own seeds, selecting each year the best plants most suitable for their own land and conditions.\n\nYes, there are a few exceptions, but in general, the hybrid seed business has been a public relations victory over the small grower. For example, you will soon see more and more hybrid leek seed offered to you. This is because the supermarkets have set incredibly rigid limits on leek size, and the only way to achieve this is through hybridising two inbred varieties, so all leek seed production is switching to hybrids.\n\nYou will be told that these new leeks are 'more uniform', 'straighter' and so on. But what about flavour and adaptability? People seem to forget that we want to eat & enjoy these things - food is not just a commodity!\n\nDespite common urban myths, there is no magic about hybrids. So-called \"hybrid vigour\" is the simple fact that good hybrid seed is better than bad real seed, and that sadly much of the real seed you get now has been badly maintained. But good real seed - which admittedly requires time, care and patience to produce and maintain - must, by virtue of the genetics of these things, be just as good, and in fact much more adaptable to different soils.\n\nThe key here is that it takes less manpower to make the hybrid seed, so the wholesale seed growers are much happier to let the old varieties fade away.\n\nAnd as for the cost of hybrid seed, this is another mystery. Hybrids are not made by hand. Yes, they were in the past, but not for many years now. Most hybrid pollination nowadays is done by chemical sprays, not hand pollination, so hybrid seed shouldn't be any more expensive than other seed. There may be a slight extra cost associated with the spraying, but it certainly doesn't justify the high prices and tiny packets some companies are offering.\n\nBasically, seeds are now bred for large industrial farms (which is where the money is) and you, the home grower, just get fobbed off with a few of the same thing. Modern advert copywriting sometimes tries to disguise this. So when you're offered something that's 'good for freezing', what they mean is that it was bred to ripen all at once for machine harvesting & you'll get a glut.\n\nHere are a few examples from other catalogues that we found: How about 'really uniform fruit' - which often means 'inbred for the supermarket, narrow genetic base, may not adapt to your soil'. Or 'straight long shanks' usually means 'bred to fit the packing machine.' Or the best one yet - 'Leafless peas - easy to find the pods' translates as 'much smaller yield (the plants have no leaves !) - but at least now we've got rid of the leaves we can harvest them with a combine.' If you want to grow it, you have no other source - good for the seed companies but not for you! Small growers should be able to keep their own seeds, selecting each year the best plants most suitable for their own land and conditions.\n\nYes, there are a few exceptions, but in general, the hybrid seed business has been a public relations victory over the small grower. Modern advert copywriting sometimes tries to disguise this. So when you're offered something that's 'good for freezing', what they mean is that it was bred to ripen all at once for machine harvesting & you'll get a glut.\n\nHere are a few examples from other catalogues that we found: How about 'really uniform fruit' - which often means 'inbred for the supermarket, narrow genetic base, may not adapt to your soil'. Or 'straight long shanks' usually means 'bred to fit the packing machine.' Or the best one yet - 'Leafless peas - easy to find the pods' translates as 'much smaller yield (the plants have no leaves !) - but at least now we've got rid of the leaves we can harvest them with a combine.' Super excited and can't wait to start planting them. We'll get into what seeds varieties we got when we plant them but in today's video I go over using excel spreadsheets to plan your plot. We bought our seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue...Here's a great extract directly from their website: "WHY GROW 'REAL SEED'? We only supply Real, Open Pollinated seed. No Hybrids & no GM seed. Here's why: REAL SEED BREEDS TRUE, SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR OWN SEED. BUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY REASON . . . REAL VEGETABLE SEED IS BETTER: Hybrid ("F1") seed is the result of a cross between two different , but heavily inbred parents. Seed you save from these plants will either be sterile or a give a whole mix of shapes and types, usually producing a poor crop. Only the seed company knows what the parents are, thus only they can produce that particular variety. If you want to grow it, you have no other source - good for the seed companies but not for you! Small growers should be able to keep their own seeds, selecting each year the best plants most suitable for their own land and conditions. Yes, there are a few exceptions, but in general, the hybrid seed business has been a public relations victory over the small grower. For example, you will soon see more and more hybrid leek seed offered to you. This is because the supermarkets have set incredibly rigid limits on leek size, and the only way to achieve this is through hybridising two inbred varieties, so all leek seed production is switching to hybrids. You will be told that these new leeks are 'more uniform', 'straighter' and so on. But what about flavour and adaptability? People seem to forget that we want to eat & enjoy these things - food is not just a commodity! Despite common urban myths, there is no magic about hybrids. So-called "hybrid vigour" is the simple fact that good hybrid seed is better than bad real seed, and that sadly much of the real seed you get now has been badly maintained. But good real seed - which admittedly requires time, care and patience to produce and maintain - must, by virtue of the genetics of these things, be just as good, and in fact much more adaptable to different soils. The key here is that it takes less manpower to make the hybrid seed, so the wholesale seed growers are much happier to let the old varieties fade away. And as for the cost of hybrid seed, this is another mystery. Hybrids are not made by hand. Yes, they were in the past, but not for many years now. Most hybrid pollination nowadays is done by chemical sprays, not hand pollination, so hybrid seed shouldn't be any more expensive than other seed. There may be a slight extra cost associated with the spraying, but it certainly doesn't justify the high prices and tiny packets some companies are offering. Basically, seeds are now bred for large industrial farms (which is where the money is) and you, the home grower, just get fobbed off with a few of the same thing. Modern advert copywriting sometimes tries to disguise this. So when you're offered something that's 'good for freezing', what they mean is that it was bred to ripen all at once for machine harvesting & you'll get a glut. Here are a few examples from other catalogues that we found: How about 'really uniform fruit' - which often means 'inbred for the supermarket, narrow genetic base, may not adapt to your soil'. Or 'straight long shanks' usually means 'bred to fit the packing machine.' Or the best one yet - 'Leafless peas - easy to find the pods' translates as 'much smaller yield (the plants have no leaves !) - but at least now we've got rid of the leaves we can harvest them with a combine.' What a sad situation this is, with marketing people rather than gardeners writing the descriptions in modern seed catalogues. In summary, hybrid seed can indeed have advantages for the industrial-chemical farmer who wants to harvest all at once. But for the small home grower who wants a good yield over a long period, real seeds are usually more productive. This has been shown time and time again, and we think that once you have tried the real open-pollinated varieties we have found, you will agree." Go check them out! I would recommend doing some planning especially when you have a lot of different varieties to plant. Let me know how you plan your plot. Hope you enjoy and don't forget to like, share and subscribe! Hybrids are not made by hand. Yes, they were in the past, but not for many years now. Most hybrid pollination nowadays is done by chemical sprays, not hand pollination, so hybrid seed shouldn't be any more expensive than other seed. There may be a slight extra cost associated with the spraying, but it certainly doesn't justify the high prices and tiny packets some companies are offering.\n\nBasically, seeds are now bred for large industrial farms (which is where the money is) and you, the home grower, just get fobbed off with a few of the same thing. Modern advert copywriting sometimes tries to disguise this. So when you're offered something that's 'good for freezing', what they mean is that it was bred to ripen all at once for machine harvesting & you'll get a glut.\n\nHere are a few examples from other catalogues that we found: How about 'really uniform fruit' - which often means 'inbred for the supermarket, narrow genetic base, may not adapt to your soil'. Or 'straight long shanks' usually means 'bred to fit the packing machine.' Or the best one yet - 'Leafless peas - easy to find the pods' translates as 'much smaller yield (the plants have no leaves !) - but at least now we've got rid of the leaves we can harvest them with a combine.' What a sad situation this is, with marketing people rather than gardeners writing the descriptions in modern seed catalogues.\n\nIn summary, hybrid seed can indeed have advantages for the industrial-chemical farmer who wants to harvest all at once. But for the small home grower who wants a good yield over a long period, real seeds are usually more productive.\n\nThis has been shown time and time again, and we think that once you have tried the real open-pollinated varieties we have found, you will agree.\"\n\nGo check them out!\n\nI would recommend doing some planning especially when you have a lot of different varieties to plant. Let me know how you plan your plot.\n\nHope you enjoy and don't forget to like, share and subscribe! \n\nMusic by Not The King: https://soundcloud.com/coreygagne\n\nFOLLOW ME:\n\nYOUTUBE: https://goo.gl/RTjGAn\nFACEBOOK: https://goo.gl/N7W7jT\nSOUNDCLOUD: https://goo.gl/2cUKVz\nTWITTER: https://goo.gl/U8Y1QT\nINSTAGRAM: https://goo.gl/yQ7BdQ","tags":["allotements","gardening","urbanfarm","urbangarden"]},"_id":"1a319f5c5e2a6a2bbcdcf7d4c2c785f5"},"tags":["allotements","gardening","urbanfarm","urbangarden","dtube"],"app":"dtube/0.6"}

Super excited and can't wait to start planting them. We'll get into what seeds varieties we got when we plant them but in today's video I go over using excel spreadsheets to plan your plot. \n\nWe bought our seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue...Here's a great extract directly from their website:\n\n\"WHY GROW 'REAL SEED'?\nWe only supply Real, Open Pollinated seed. No Hybrids & no GM seed. Here's why:\n\nREAL SEED BREEDS TRUE, SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR OWN SEED.\nBUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY REASON . . . REAL VEGETABLE SEED IS BETTER:\nHybrid (\"F1\") seed is the result of a cross between two different , but heavily inbred parents. Seed you save from these plants will either be sterile or a give a whole mix of shapes and types, usually producing a poor crop.\n\nOnly the seed company knows what the parents are, thus only they can produce that particular variety. If you want to grow it, you have no other source - good for the seed companies but not for you! Small growers should be able to keep their own seeds, selecting each year the best plants most suitable for their own land and conditions.\n\nYes, there are a few exceptions, but in general, the hybrid seed business has been a public relations victory over the small grower. For example, you will soon see more and more hybrid leek seed offered to you. This is because the supermarkets have set incredibly rigid limits on leek size, and the only way to achieve this is through hybridising two inbred varieties, so all leek seed production is switching to hybrids.\n\nYou will be told that these new leeks are 'more uniform', 'straighter' and so on. But what about flavour and adaptability? People seem to forget that we want to eat & enjoy these things - food is not just a commodity!\n\nDespite common urban myths, there is no magic about hybrids. I think a lot of folks seem to forget this and it's hugely important to know that, in the beginning, it isn't always fun! To be honest, I LOVE the entire process of clearing up the plot (We have actually almost finished clearing it up but you'll see this in future uploads). We only took over this plot in Autumn so the weather has played a huge factor in getting everything cleared, but I would recommend at least 5-10 FULL DAYS of work at the very least. So depending on how big your plot is, when you start working and how often you can actually be there, work out a time table to work to. Here are a few things to bare in mind and to think about when getting an allotment for the first time: How big is the plot, and what state is it in now? This is important because you can get overwhelmed very quickly if you take on a HUGE area. You might be super excited and over estimate how much work is involved and end up throwing in the towel before you've even begun. What season is it? If it's summer, you will be able to get a lot more done in a shorter period of time, simply because there will be less rain around and the ground will probably be easier to work. What, if any, sort of weeds are on the plot? Some weeds are a massive pain in the ass to get rid of. You may need to spend a lot of time removing root systems to ensure they don't come back. How much time do I have to work on the plot? Are you limited to one day a week? Can you go to your plot in the evenings? This is important because the less time you have, the smaller the plot you chose should be. That was, you are more likely to not get overwhelmed and will probably stick at it! There are obviously lots of things to consider but these are just a few of the important ones. I'm lucky enough to be sharing this plot with a friend so the work load is a lot more manageable. Hope you find this info useful, and see you in the next video. <hr><a href='https://d.tube/#!/v/cynneth/jvevbaa9'> ▶️ DTube</a><br /><a href='https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmPshDBfvnVvRuyCa467gt8oHvCTispaS6wFdQeViignc7'> ▶️ IPFS</a>

I moved to the UK from South Africa and started growing vegetables at home. I soon realised that this was something I really enjoyed doing. I stumbled upon a guy called Curtis Stone who was an urban farmer in Canada and his video's were incredibly inspiring. He is farming in peoples back yards in Canada and making a really good living. At this point, things sort of fell into place and I knew that this is what I wanted to do! Be an urban farmer. Now, the context in the UK is slightly different, so maybe I won't be growing vegetables in the small gardens of the residents of Cheltenham, where I live, but I could certainly start working towards honing my skills, experimenting and learning. This is my journey of how I get to my dream job. Starting off with a small allotment to hopefully, growing and selling vegetables full time. I hope you enjoy following me! <hr><a href='https://d.tube/#!/v/cynneth/mljchvpp'> ▶️ DTube</a><br /><a href='https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmYUg18oKMXhUVJrmaWpCKETRSoy3oim4Qt2V3GUxPbTxK'> ▶️ IPFS</a>
