| title | How To Start A Successful Travel Blog Today |
| body | In the process of building Uncharted, we have been talking to and meeting hundreds of successful travel bloggers and asked them for their tips to share in this article. Some who just got started to others who travel full-time and live entirely off the earnings from their blog. Sounds amazing, right? While there are a bunch of great blog articles out there that cover the topic, and even some step by step guides, we wanted to give it a fresh '2017' look, based on the feedback and great recommendations we've been glad enough to get from our traveling friends! The complete version of this post first appeared here: https://uncharted.io/@uncharted/how-to-start-a-successful-travel-blog-today--Ksk_CzJt874IVhIA2MI. Some of the questions that may go through your head right now will be answered in this post. - Are people going to be interested in reading my travel blog? - Am I equipped with the technical know-how and tools to set up a great website? - How much of a time (and money) investment will this take to start? - Am I a good enough writer to be successful? - How do I turn my passion into a business? - Will I love running my travel blog? In this article, we are going to give you some step by step recommendations and tips to help you take the leap. By the end of this post, you will know whether travel blogging is for you or not and if you decide to go for it, where to start and how to set yourself up to be as successful as possible. ## Before You Start Creating and maintaining a great travel blog can be a lot of hard work! Make sure you've read through the following before investing a lot of time (and money). ### Your Motivation You may wonder: Is travel blogging for me? Do I have it what it takes to write engaging content, find a unique voice and build a big following? People start travel blogs for all kinds of fine reasons: - to keep their family and friends posted while on a big trip - have a personal diary of their travels - create a lasting memory of the trips and people they've traveled with - and, of course, build a big audience and monetize the blog to finance future travels A quick Google search for the term "travel blog" today yields over a million results and, according to Google Trends, interest in "start a travel blog" has been increasing significantly in recent years. ### Why Not To Start A Travel Blog Blogging is hard work! Anyone's who has become a successful blogger, will confirm that. And while it may seem obvious, it cannot be emphasized enough. Beyond the technical requirements of getting you up and running, think about what it takes to plan and produce unique, inspiring content on a regular basis, promote that content, interact with readers. Some of the travel writers we spoke to have talked about "blogger burnout" - particularly when traveling across geographies, dealing with jet lag, travel stress and then having at the end of a long day, spend additional hours creating amazing copy while planning the next adventure. Do you travel to blog or do you blog to travel? Naturally, after starting your blog, you'll travel in a different way. You'll be starting to see your journey through the eye of an interested reader, you'll start optimizing for accommodations that have WiFi so you can get your post published and check in on your blog's traffic. It's going to be an adjustment. Not to mention that you'll inadvertently start thinking about how to make money with your blog and that may start to impact what locations you travel to, too. Can you handle negative feedback? Imagine you put up a post that you just spent 5 hours carefully crafting. Now some comments are coming in. Not all positive, and you are feeling criticized, judged. You said you don't like ramen and people can't believe it? Someone accuses you of taking a cab instead of the bus on your "budget trip". Or worse, "it looks like you clearly are a spoiled brat with plenty of money to spend on overeating", a comment Liz Carlson received on her travel blog and shared to show that's it's not all fun and sunshine. Talking to bloggers who've been writing for some time, they will be quick to tell you that you have to develop a thick skin and not worry about other people's opinions. In fact, they even go as far as embrace controversy and not being afraid of putting their true opinions out there as a way to develop a unique voice and authenticity. ### Do Some Market Research As an avid traveler, you've likely been reading many travel blogs and have you favorites who you follow. But have you ever done a search to see how many people have written about trips similar to the ones you would want to write about? A great recommendation on this topic comes from Liz Carlson, Nothing irks me more than generic “global nomad” bloggers. You know, those people who quit their corporate America jobs, sold their houses and have been on the road ever since, in a new country every month and have no in-depth knowledge, profound opinions or ideas about the places they visit. Their blogs are filled with generic posts like “top 10 things to do in Thailand” and “where to dine on a budget in Paris.” If you spent 10 days in Thailand, you are NOT an authority on Thailand, so don’t pretend otherwise. So think about it: Would you offer a new perspective? What's missing from their posts? Where's your niche? How would you stand out from the crowd? ### Your Voice At the end of this process, you should have a clearer idea of what your voice would feel like. Ultimately, it's going to be a simple recipe. The more you write, the more you will develop your voice. There's not really a guide for this, but you will learn as you go. ## Setting Up Your Travel Blog ### Pick A Name Finding a great name is arguably one of the the most exciting and most difficult parts of this process. It may be stressful but once you have decided on your perfect name it will make things much more real and bring with it some great positive adrenaline. Here are some things to think about when picking your name: Available Domain: A short and easy to spell name is hard to come by these days, especially when looking for a dot-com domain, so consider some other options like .io or .travel. GoDaddy is the biggest domain registrar and also let's you search the secondary market (i.e. domains that someone else currently owns and may be looking to sell for a premium). Social Handles: Make sure you are able to get a label matching your domain/name for all the major social networks, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. This will make it easier to build a brand across platforms and help users navigate your content. Standing Out: Nomadtravelingtheworld.com may be relatively easy to spell and likely available still, but keep in mind that with the rise of travel blogs some of these terms, like "nomad", have become overused and it's going to be hard to stand out. Reflect your Voice and Personality: To get this right is key - the best way to build an audience is to have a unique voice and develop a personality. It can be difficult to capture all that in just a name, so it's more important to focus on not picking a name that would contradict your voice or personality, e.g. livingonyachts.travel for a travel blog on sustainable traveling off-the-beaten path. Short-term vs Long-Term View: In that context, also consider the short vs. the long-term view. Having a travel blog named 'Traveling South East Asia in January' , 'A Year Abroad' or 'Backpacking With 35' may sound great now but significantly limit you (e.g. what about that trip to Spain in April you are going to take the following year?) and may make it difficult to build a big audience longer-term. Social Presence Don't stop at setting up the accounts. Having a unified experience across your blog and your various social sites is going to be important to build name recognition and your personal brand. Especially early on when getting started, the best way to build an audience is to start sharing your posts on your social networks. ### Technology Choices The available options can be overwhelming. Here's a quick overview to give you a better sense for the landscape of options and which one may be best for you: Wordpress self-hosted (free): This has probably been the most popular option in the past. There are some other content management systems (CMS) like Drupal that people are also using for their website, but while most of these offer quite a bit of customization in form of templates and widgets, they are a bit harder to maintain. Say the theme you picked 10 years ago looked great on a desktop computer but doesn't really work on mobile now and changing a template can be painful or the developer behind the social widget plugin you have been using is no longer working on it. Also keep in mind that unless you spin up your own server, you will also incur hosting (e.g. with GoDaddy, 1&1, HostGator, Bluehost) charges, especially as you grow your audience. Wordpress hosted, on Wordpress.com or other managed Wordpress provider (paid): As above, except hosted so you don't have to worry about servers and uptime. However, you often sacrifice a little bit of flexibility in terms of customization and control. You will probably still find a great theme but be aware that some themes and plugins may not work. Hosted with a blogging platform like Blogger, Tumblr, Medium (free): Most of us are familiar with blogging platforms and while they have the benefit of a built in community and no need to install anything, the downside is that they are typically not well-suited for travel writing. It's not easy or possible to embed custom maps or map widgets that would show directions, trails or points of interest, or tag places easily to give your readers a better way to follow your journey. Often photo layout options are limited too. Hosted with site builder like GoDaddy, WIX, Weebly, Squarespace (freemium/paid): The most common way of setting up a web presence these days, though in most cases limited travel website templates or functionality aimed at travel writers, as pointed out above. On the plus side, you can often fully customize the sites to give them your own look and feel (or pay a web designer to help you with that). Hosted with travel-specific blogging platform like Uncharted (free): One of the motivations for starting Uncharted was to address the particular needs of travel writers while giving them a world-class editor that publishes beautiful to web and mobile interfaces, with an easy way to integrate powerful maps, beautifully laid out photos and videos, and easy tagging of the places visited. More importantly, rather than starting with zero traffic, travel writers can quickly build an audience through exposure in Uncharted's community. Learn more here. You can find plenty of advice on each of them and how to set them up on other blogs so we won't spend too much time on this topic here. ## Time to Write! ### Have A Plan Of course you could just start and see what happens. But it's nice to have a plan to be able to learn from comparing what you think will happen to what actually happens. How often are you aiming to post a story? It's a good idea to come up with a rough plan, make a list, especially when traveling for a longer period of time. For example, you could try to post a story once a week, maybe take notes throughout the week and then have some time blocked on your calendar to finalize and publish your story. Are you going to stick to a particular format? Especially when growing your audience, some readers may get used to a particular format e.g. providing a summary of the post in the beginning or starting with a fun anecdote. If you roughly have an idea of the format it will help you plan and collect collateral for your post throughout the week. Are people loving your content? Where is your referral traffic coming from? Make sure you get feedback from your readers and understand what's working and what's not. ### Write Your First Post Your first post. It can be a bit daunting get started and click "publish" that first time and share your article with your friends and family ... and the entire world. Well, you're probably feeling the pressure, so here's some of our favorite advice to help you make it a good one! "Use anecdotes and scenes in your storytelling", recommends Julie Schwietert on her blog. Stories that linearly talk about every single activity, meal are just not that interesting to most readers. "Writing is like painting a picture; you need the tiny details as much as the broad brush strokes in order to bring the scene to life for your reader", recommend the Adventurists. Rather than saying "I packed my bag and left the hotel", think about describing what you were packing in your bag before that big trek and how you had to carefully choose what to bring and what not. "The needs of the reader should come before the needs of the writer. You need to re-create the travel experience, while lending it relevance and perspective", some clear words here by Bob Brooke in his Writers' Corner. Information like when you visited could be crucial - the weather could be very different in February and March compared to June, July, or August and that's the kind of detail readers may appreciate as they read your post to plan their own trip. ## Finding Your Style & Rhythm Once you've written your first ten posts, go back to your original plan and compare your goals to what you have actually done. Adjust as you see fit based on what you're learning. Happy blogging! ## Making Money With Your Blog A lot of aspiring travel writers are wondering how to best make money. Yes, this can be a business. While it's a big topic on probably something we will cover in depth in a future post, here are some of the most common ways travel bloggers and writers are monetizing their work today: - Google AdSense - Travel Affiliate Programs - Amazon Affiliates - Sponsored Content - Sponsored Trips - E-Books - Paid Guest Posts - Paid Social Media Posts ## Your Feedback Something helpful we should add to this post? Please let us know at [email protected]. Thank you! |

"title": "How To Start A Successful Travel Blog Today",
"body": "In the process of building Uncharted, we have been talking to and meeting hundreds of successful travel bloggers and asked them for their tips to share in this article. \n\nThe complete version of this post first appeared here: https://uncharted.io/@uncharted/how-to-start-a-successful-travel-blog-today--Ksk_CzJt874IVhIA2MI.\n\nSome of the questions that may go through your head right now will be answered in this post.\n\n- Are people going to be interested in reading my travel blog?\n- Am I equipped with the technical know-how and tools to set up a great website?\n- How much of a time (and money) investment will this take to start? \n- Am I a good enough writer to be successful? \n- How do I turn my passion into a business?\n- Will I love running my travel blog?\n\nIn this article, we are going to give you some step by step recommendations and tips to help you take the leap. By the end of this post, you will know whether travel blogging is for you or not and if you decide to go for it, where to start and how to set yourself up to be as successful as possible.\n\n## Before You Start\n\nCreating and maintaining a great travel blog can be a lot of hard work! Make sure you've read through the following before investing a lot of time (and money). \n\n### Your Motivation\n\nYou may wonder: Is travel blogging for me? Do I have it what it takes to write engaging content, find a unique voice and build a big following? People start travel blogs for all kinds of fine reasons:\n\n- to keep their family and friends posted while on a big trip\n- have a personal diary of their travels \n- create a lasting memory of the trips and people they've traveled with\n- and, of course, build a big audience and monetize the blog to finance future travels\n \nA quick Google search for the term \"travel blog\" today yields over a million results and, according to Google Trends, interest in \"start a travel blog\" has been increasing significantly in recent years.\n\n### Why Not To Start A Travel Blog\n\nBlogging is hard work! Some of the travel writers we spoke to have talked about \"blogger burnout\" - particularly when traveling across geographies, dealing with jet lag, travel stress and then having at the end of a long day, spend additional hours creating amazing copy while planning the next adventure. \n\nDo you travel to blog or do you blog to travel? Naturally, after starting your blog, you'll travel in a different way. You'll be starting to see your journey through the eye of an interested reader, you'll start optimizing for accommodations that have WiFi so you can get your post published and check in on your blog's traffic. It's going to be an adjustment. Not to mention that you'll inadvertently start thinking about how to make money with your blog and that may start to impact what locations you travel to, too.\n\nCan you handle negative feedback? Imagine you put up a post that you just spent 5 hours carefully crafting. Now some comments are coming in. Not all positive, and you are feeling criticized, judged. You said you don't like ramen and people can't believe it? Someone accuses you of taking a cab instead of the bus on your \"budget trip\". Or worse, \"it looks like you clearly are a spoiled brat with plenty of money to spend on overeating\", a comment Liz Carlson received on her travel blog and shared to show that's it's not all fun and sunshine. Talking to bloggers who've been writing for some time, they will be quick to tell you that you have to develop a thick skin and not worry about other people's opinions. In fact, they even go as far as embrace controversy and not being afraid of putting their true opinions out there as a way to develop a unique voice and authenticity. \n\n### Do Some Market Research\n\nAs an avid traveler, you've likely been reading many travel blogs and have you favorites who you follow. But have you ever done a search to see how many people have written about trips similar to the ones you would want to write about? A great recommendation on this topic comes from Liz Carlson,\n\nNothing irks me more than generic “global nomad” bloggers. \n\nSo think about it: Would you offer a new perspective? What's missing from their posts? Where's your niche? How would you stand out from the crowd? \n\n### Your Voice\n\nAt the end of this process, you should have a clearer idea of what your voice would feel like. Ultimately, it's going to be a simple recipe. The more you write, the more you will develop your voice. There's not really a guide for this, but you will learn as you go.\n\n## Setting Up Your Travel Blog\n\n### Pick A Name\n\nFinding a great name is arguably one of the the most exciting and most difficult parts of this process. It may be stressful but once you have decided on your perfect name it will make things much more real and bring with it some great positive adrenaline. Here are some things to think about when picking your name:\n\nAvailable Domain: A short and easy to spell name is hard to come by these days, especially when looking for a dot-com domain, so consider some other options like .io or .travel. GoDaddy is the biggest domain registrar and also let's you search the secondary market (i.e. domains that someone else currently owns and may be looking to sell for a premium). \n\nSocial Handles: Make sure you are able to get a label matching your domain/name for all the major social networks, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. This will make it easier to build a brand across platforms and help users navigate your content. \n\nStanding Out: Nomadtravelingtheworld.com may be relatively easy to spell and likely available still, but keep in mind that with the rise of travel blogs some of these terms, like \"nomad\", have become overused and it's going to be hard to stand out. \n\nReflect your Voice and Personality: To get this right is key - the best way to build an audience is to have a unique voice and develop a personality. It can be difficult to capture all that in just a name, so it's more important to focus on not picking a name that would contradict your voice or personality, e.g. livingonyachts.travel for a travel blog on sustainable traveling off-the-beaten path.\n\nShort-term vs Long-Term View: In that context, also consider the short vs. the long-term view. \n\nSocial Presence\n\nDon't stop at setting up the accounts. Having a unified experience across your blog and your various social sites is going to be important to build name recognition and your personal brand. Especially early on when getting started, the best way to build an audience is to start sharing your posts on your social networks.\n\n ### Technology Choices\n\nThe available options can be overwhelming. | title | Three Amazing Days in Kyoto (Detailed Travel Guide) |
| body | Kyoto, Japan's old capital, is one of the most amazing cities to explore by foot. I have been twice and can't wait to go back. Below are the highlights of our itinerary. We fly into Osaka's Kansai International Airport and took an airport bus to the train station in Kyoto which took us about 1.5 hours. Our plan was to spend three full days in Kyoto and do day trips to Tokyo and Nara. Below is the itinerary for our 3 day visit. ## Accommodation We had Hyatt points so decided to make the Hyatt Regency Kyoto our home base and were positively surprised that it had a very unique, different feel than its cousins abroad - the architecture and interior design were very tasteful and the room, overlooking the courtyard garden, an oasis of quite and peacefulness. We loved the little details, like the bathrobe kimonos. * Hyatt Regency Kyoto* We arrived after dark and despite being tired from traveling we were eager to see the old town and so decided to go on an evening walk. Few people were out and most of the restaurants had closed - it was kind of a magical experience. Highly recommend! Afterwards, we decided to just sample a few Japanese whiskeys in the downstairs hotel bar. ## Day 1 We were a little tired from traveling and given the heavy rain, we decided to stay close to the hotel. What ended up being one of our favorite Buddhist temples that we visited, is just a short 5 minute walk from the hotel: Sanjūsangen-dō.. The main hall has one thousand life-size statues of the 'Thousand Armed Kannon' and standing among them and letting yourself be carried away by the ambience of the space was a very unique experience, especially as this was the first temple on our trip. *Sanjūsangen-dō * In the afternoon, we visited the Kyoto National Museum. which is one of Japan's oldest and most prestigious art museums. A great place to learn about the local culture and escaping the rain for a few hours! ## Day 2 We woke up to gray skies but luckily it wasn't raining when we started our walk. First stop was Kiyomizu-dera, one of the must-see, iconic temples in Kyoto on top of Mount Otowa, a 20 minutes walk from the Hyatt Regency Kyoto. * Kiyomizu-dera * Our next planned stops were the Chion-in Temple and the Shoren-in Monzeki Temple, both a short walk from Kiyomizu-dera. Since there's a lot to see along the way, we ended up getting there only early afternoon, as we were taking our time, sometimes venturing off the main road, exploring a side alley or some of the smaller shrines and temples. *Entry gate at Chion-in and gardens at Shoren-in Monzeki Temple * ## Day 3 You can't go to Kyoto without visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine in Southern Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of orange torii gates. To get there, take a train from Kyoto Station to Fushimi-Inari Station. * Fushimi Inari Taisha * We ended up spending the better part of the day walking around Fushimi Inari Taisha and it was nice to not just rush through (which is what you are often tempted to do simply because there is so much to see) it but take a little breaks along the way, stop for a picnic or simply people-watch and taking in the atmosphere. ## A Word on Food... Between great street food and Kyoto's many Michelin star restaurants, there's something for everyone. Most days rather than doing a sit-down lunch, in order to save some time, we opted for supermarket onigiris, a popular triangle seaweed wrapped rice snack and tried to find a small, local izakaya for dinner, depending on what part of town we were in. *Japanese lunch snacks, a typical lunch combo and a small izakaya in the old center of Kyoto* |

| body | Kyoto, Japan's old capital, is one of the most amazing cities to explore by foot.
