| body | Hi guys, welcome back to my blog! The last album we had from Hozier was back in 2014 & for a while, I thought he had given up. I know Hozier released some EPs over the last couple of years & that was great, but considering the buzz he created when he stepped onto the scene, all the way until his self titled album, I think I speak for most people when I say that another album had been long overdue & to be frank, we all thought the worst. Perhaps this was never a concern for the most loyal of fans, yet some doubts regarding quality/creativity must have come creeping in at some stage, especially when it hit the 4 year mark. All that being said, 5 years later & here we have Wasteland, Baby! I can only presume Hozier’s touring had finally come to a temporary close & he could finally finish and/or release his latest project. I’m not going to sit here and say ‘it’s been worth the wait!’, because I just don’t think it’s hugely impressive. However, it’s not unimpressive either, so what exactly do we have here? Well, we have an album filled with your typical Hozier sounds/vibes, which, of course, is no bad thing & it also includes some songs you could expect to hear on future soundtracks of movies, series, TV advertisements etc. Hozier brings a particularly high level of integrity, soul & originality to his music, which is why I think people like him as much as they do. The opening of Wasteland, Baby! is a really strong song to start with. ‘Nina Cried Power’ ft. Mavis Staple is a track that holds it’s fist into the air to demonstrate a movement. If you listen to the song, then you will know what kind of movement Hozier is referring to. It’s also like walking into a room where you haven’t been to in a while (for e.g. the album launch room) & shouting from the top of your voice to let everyone know you’re back with a bang (Wasteland, Baby!). The song that follows the above is ‘Almost’, which is a pleasant song that sparked, what I could only describe, as joy. This is something that Hozier does so well & with such simplistic instruments. He proves over & over again that you don’t need much to make a good song. You just need to be committed, stay true to yourself/artistry & the rest will follow. One last song that I feel should be mentioned is ‘As It Was’ & although every song has it’s appeal, this song reminds me of a Country & Western movie reaching it’s penultimate moment, or perhaps a scene where by the end is near, reflection of one’s self/acts is at the forefront of one’s mind & there is nothing left do, but ponder upon the thought of what the future has in-store. I’ve always liked Hozier & even more so, the music he creates. He clearly has star quality & gives the world music we don’t seem to hear much of, if at all, especially on the mainstream charts. Where there was once a void, Hozier has perfectly filled. He sits in a space, where, if it wasn’t for him, I’m not sure too many artists out there could similarly replicate/acquire. Of course, there has to be other musicians out there with styles that come close, but I highly doubt there will be many that can provide what Hozier does. When he releases a song, we don’t just get his music. We also get a part of who he is & as listeners, we value that, nearly as much as the song itself, although, let’s face it, they usually go hand-in-hand, resulting in (most of the time) effortlessly conjured rhythms that satisfy your musical urges, just as much as it stimulates your mind & triggers thoughts you would have never thought, had it not been for the song in question. Hozier is a great artist & I am glad he’s come back with a strong secondary project. I just hope he doesn’t leave it as long for the album that proceeds this, yet, time will only tell. What do you think of Wasteland, Baby!? Comment down below! |

| body | Well, what can I say? After almost 5 months of playing Red Dead Redemption 2, it has finally come to a close. I want to make it clear that I never played the original Red Dead Redemption. I mean, I did play it, but I never owned the game and/or completed the main story. For a reason I can’t quite put my finger on, it just didn’t appeal to me at that time. A lot was going on in my life back in 2010, so I completely missed out on the original experience, but when Red Dead Redemption 2 came along in October last year, I was not missing out again! As with most games I look to play, I do a fair bit of research prior to purchasing it & Red Dead Redemption 2 was no different. I have always been an admirer of Rockstar’s games, so I was quietly confident that this was going to be a great game. After watching a few videos of the gameplay & cinematics, I was excited about what was coming my way. And, since purchasing it, I have not looked back. Well, only as my character in the game, because it’s certainly advisable given the amount of people you.. encounter, shall we say. One question you’re probably wondering is ‘‘Is this game really 6 month’s worth of someones time?’’, and the answer to that question is ‘‘no’’. It took me as long as it did, due to the fact that I now have to juggle, what could essentially be categorised as, married life. Gisele & I have never tied the knot, but we may as well be, because living with your partner for the first time is a big deal (for most people) & you’re routine completely changes from what was once (back at the folks’ home) a life of luxury. Your washing was done, cleaning, food was always available etc. Whereas, the reality right now, is that I share all of those responsibilities, as well as being head-chef, walking Cookie, our Bichon Frise, plus, not to mention all the other grown up stuff, which I will not bore you with. Playing Red Dead Redemption 2 was like watching/playing a role in a western movie & of course, your character is one of the lead’s. The more I played the game, the more I perceived this game for what I have just described it as being. Sometimes I wondered whether the idea behind Red Dead Redemption 2 was more story/plot driven, then it was about the missions themselves, or maybe even the players experience as a whole. That’s going to sound strange or perhaps even counter intuitive, possibly even ridiculous, but let me just break this down for a second. The very best games to have ever been made that are in direct comparison to this, have had a perfectly weighted balance between what you do, the story you see unraveling before your eyes & the experience you have from start to finish. For e.g., The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim was a masterpiece for me (game bugs/glitches excluded) & this is a prime example of what a AAA game, in this genre (open world), should consist of. Without a doubt, the story needs to be 1st class, then the players involvement in said story needs to be utterly engaging & your experience has to be second to none. Read Dead Redemption 2 gives you a great story & your involvement is awesome, yet I can’t help but feel it fell short with the engagement & experience parts. Perhaps ‘fell short’ is a bit overly critical for a game that has done so much right, offers so much & is a visual delight at times. I felt as though, even with the story being as exciting as it was, it still could have been better (and I don’t mean that in a ‘it could always be better’ type of way, thus making this comment utterly pointless) & it could have had you even more immersed than you were. Whenever I didn’t play it for a few days or a week, I was always looking forward to putting it on, but never did I have this urge/desire to play it whenever I had the tiniest bit of time free. I admit, due to my commitments mentioned above, I did reserve the right to play Red Dead Redemption 2 when I knew I had at least +2 hours free, but if this game really did ‘have me’ where it wanted me, then I’m inclined to believe I would have played it a whole lot more & at any time, no matter if I only had 20 mins to spare. Overall, though, in the grand scheme of things, Rockstar’s latest release is up there among the ‘big boys’ of the game titles world & there are plenty of pluses to rave about, not to mention the countless fun things there are to do, such as, crafting unusual clothes, owning an array of different guns, customizing weaponry, hunting/legendary hunting, roaming the fields, woods & mountains, never knowing what/who you will find, side missions that appear from nowhere, such as, helping people who are being attacked by a wolf or a bear, having the option to break-out criminals, sleeping/bathing in motels, getting your hair cut or beard trimmed, playing poker, five finger fillet, getting drunk, purchasing expensive breeds of horses that you can then use on your travels, going on train journeys/robbing the train’s passengers & the list goes on. The characters/your gang are also well developed/written. All are more than believable & as you could expect, moments of brutality are never far away. Read Dead Redemption 2 does take an unexpected turn at one point & I, for one, thoroughly appreciated/enjoyed that part. It was a welcomed diversion that I don’t think I have ever had with a Rockstar game. Not that I can remember, anyway. The shooting is also, as you would expect, a huge part of a western themed game & it’s satisfying when you do find yourself in a shootout. Stealth kills are also really easy/fun & I like the way you can set up camp wherever you may be, should you fancy a rest or a chill session by the fire. There is a lot to do in this game & the word ‘variety’ does come to mind when explaining what exactly goes on/what you have to do, which is great, because variety is exactly what a game like this needs to be/stay interesting. All in all, I’ve enjoyed my time with Red Dead Redemption 2 & I’m glad I bought it. It’s clearly made by some top game developers & it’s certainly a game I will remember. I love online gaming, but I also love offline, story driven games, so when I was bored with FIFA, COD or whatever else, I always knew I could count on Rockstar’s western epic to serve me accordingly, should I ever feel the need to indulge in such a story/missions & indulge I did! As I’m sure you may have guessed, you need to invest a fair chunk of your time in this game in order for it to be worthy of your money & for you to enjoy it as it’s meant to be enjoyed. The side missions are there, but if you don’t want to do them, then you don’t have to. You could very easily stick to the main story & still have a great time without feeling like it’s going nowhere. Of course, if you have all the time in the world, then this is like an all you can eat buffet with the foods you like in every tub & you can fill your belly to your hearts content. Either way, it’s a great game with a solid & entertaining story, an ensemble of an eclectic mix of people, whether in your gang or not, that has nothing but excitement at it’s core & there is lots of fun to be had. There may have even be a lesson to be learnt from it all that the player takes away at the end of it, but I will let you decide that for yourself. What did you think of Red Dead Redemption 2? | body | I wanted a pair of wireless earphones/headphones for a long, long time, but I could never find the right product. The main reason for holding me back from most of the earphones on the market was the extra ‘sticking out bit’ that seems to go right into your ear. I am very conscious of the fact that it could push thing’s into the canal. Some people are more prone to that & I am one of them. What was putting me off most, if not all, headphones on the market was either the size (way too big for my small-ish head) or the clamp-like feel they all seem to have. Even the lightest headphones seemed to really bother my ears after 15-20 minutes, which was never going to work as I usually listen to music for hours. Whenever I saw Apple’s Airpods I always had the same thought ‘‘it’s such a shame I can’t buy/use them as they would be perfect for me’’. If i’m being completely honest I had that thought a number of times over the course of a year or so. Who know’s, it could have been longer! That’s not to say I was sitting in my room on a daily basis contemplating the Airpods until one day it hit me that maybe, just maybe it was compatible with Android. My Beats by Dre boombox/speaker is a little bass monster & I was using that almost all the time. However, quite a while did go by without my much sought after wireless earphones before I eventually had that light bulb moment & Googled the question.. ‘Are Apple Airpods compatible with Android’. Ridiculous, I know, but this is a classic example of assumption & why you should never indulge in such a pointless activity. Lesson learnt. When I discovered that the Airpods were Android compatible it was as if my troubles were swept away in an instant. I just knew that even with the final test of putting them in my ears that these earphones were the product I so desperately needed & I was proven right the moment they took their seats.. in my ears, of course. Simple & plain the Airpods are awesome. They have the traditional flat earphone style that doesn’t go deep into your ear & they fit perfectly. No exaggeration whatsoever with the fit.. they literally are a dream pair of earphones for me. They have great sound quality & I am happy with the bass. The battery life is excellent as well. I am sure you will get earphone reviewers stating predictable/obvious points, such as ‘‘they don’t have deep bass, no noise-cancellation’’ etc. But as I read in another post/review, by owning a pair of earphones and/or headphones that completely dominate your hearing, you’re essentially deafened from the outside world & I am pretty sure if you were crossing the street or cycling & had a car just about to hit you, I think it’s safe to say you would definitely want to know about that. The Apple Airpods serve their purpose & they serve them very well indeed. If you’re looking for a pair of headphones that drown out everything around you, then these are 100% not for you, but mainly because these are earphones & don’t have noise cancellation. All jokes aside, if you’re looking for something that you can use on a regular, casual & extended period basis, provide solid battery life, are comfortable, don’t stick into your ears & you can hear just enough of what’s around you to provide an additional safety element all at the same time, then these are certainly for you. |

| body | Trailers of upcoming games can make a huge impact on potential players. I remember seeing the God of War 4 trailer months before it was going to be released & was taken back by what I saw. I knew very little of the God of War franchise. In fact, I thought this year’s release was a standalone, but there were 3 games prior & lucky for me, there was a re-mastered version of God of War 3, so I thought it was a good idea to play it. God of War 3 is clearly a game that was made for the last generation of console. It is nothing that God of War 4 is & it’s actually very similar to a Super Mario style walking/running & battling through one level from start to finish. However, as simple as this may sound, just like the game I mentioned, it’s a lot of fun. The combat is satisfying, you really appreciate when you’re character is leveled up & when your weapons are upgraded, you’re eager to test them. I also found the story interesting & I had every intention of finding out what was going to happen, even if it felt like it was never going to end. When I first put on God of War 4, I was visually blown away & that was on my Samsung 6400 40 inch LED TV. When I recently upgraded to my 2018 Samsung Q7 55 inch QLED, which you can check out on my Blog by clicking the link you just read, it took the game to a whole new level & having my Sonos Beam turned on all at the same time, had me in gaming heaven. Everything looked so sharp, the colours were super bright/vibrant & with every single sound coming at you in crystal clear quality, you’re even more immersed than you could have ever thought possible. From the word go, the game wasn’t just easy on the eyes. As soon as the game begins, your attention/intrigue is completely heightened. The cut scenes/cinematics are impressive & it feel’s like you’re watching a movie, but with a console controller in your hand at the same time. Only the most spectacular games provide this kind of experience. As I stated at the start of this Blog, the combat in God of War 3 was enjoyable & from a game that’s title has the words ‘God of War’, I didn’t expect anything less than excellent from this years release. Typically, it was & I had so much fun! Progressing through your weapons & skills was an absolute joy, whereas on other games I’ve played, it can feel boring. In this instance, they’ve simplified everything & they even give you a demo of what move you’ve just unlocked. I like little extras like that. The more moves you unlock, the more combination moves can be done & this is where the combat turns into something else altogether. The free-roam side to the game is very much welcomed & the side quests are really fun. The additional characters you meet are nothing short of awesome & the dialogue between one another is well written. I liked that there were challenges/areas that you could complete in order to try and win better armor, weapons etc. Although, as far as I can remember, some of the enemies were hard to beat & some of them were, well, let’s just say you’re in for a fight. As I am sure you have guessed from the thumbnail, you’re not alone on this journey & I could only admire the relationship that was on show. You also have a relationship with a particular weapon, which is probably one of the coolest weapons I have ever used & there is no doubt in my mind that you will think so to. This is a game that has so many check boxes ticked. From the story, to the graphics, combat, crafting, upgrades, challenges & replayability. To say that this kind of game is hard to come by would be an understatement. I am immensely grateful & appreciative to the creators of God of War 4 because it’s just that good. So much time, patience, care, & attention to detail must have gone in to creating this, that I couldn’t even begin to imagine the amount of work that was involved. If you’ve played the previous God of War’s, then do not, for one second, think that this is anything even remotely similar. This is a completely different style of game & you’re in for a deliciously sweet treat. For those who have never played any of the franchise & are now considering doing so, all I can ask is ‘‘why are you still reading this Blog??’’. |

| body | For a film that’s premise was so promising, I felt as though Bird Box could have been something memorable. Instead, we got something that didn’t live up to it’s plot/intensity & I walked away feeling underwhelmed. Bird Box had far too many dire moments for it to be deemed as an acceptably good movie. There were things I just didn’t anticipate & not in a good way. It made the film feel cheap, tacky & rushed. I will always be highly critical of movies that don’t take themselves seriously, but only if the movie itself is a serious one & Bird Box certainly fits into that category. However, despite there being fundamental plot flaws, moments of ridiculousness & scenes that would simply not happen (even in most B rated movies), Sandra Bullock & her journey to find a potential safe-haven, save the Bird Box from being a complete and utter disaster. Some readers may not agree with how blunt I’ve been, although, if you asked those very same people to be completely honest in what they thought, they would also come to the same conclusion as I have. That being said, not every single minute of this movie was horrendous. Susanne Bier, the Director, did maintain a high level of intensity throughout most of Bird Box. The story itself is an unusual one, but I liked it. In a nutshell, something has swarmed Earth & whoever it comes into contact with, it destroys & the only way it destroys you, is if you look at it. Once you have looked at ‘it’, you are essentially a goner, but it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ type of corruption. Some people commit suicide, some would intentionally kill others who hadn’t looked at it & so on and so forth. Whatever this thing was, all it wanted to do was to eradicate the host and other humans. After the entire run-time had elapsed, I never quite understood what the threat was, but that’s not to say you wouldn’t. I did ponder for a little while as to whether I may have missed something, or perhaps I failed to see what was right in front of me the entire time. All that I knew is that I was glad it was over. I always had this feeling that the film was never going to amount to anything & it was never building up to anything. For me, I was right on both counts. The fact that John Malkovich was casted for Birdbox didn’t help either. In fact, it just made things worse. I, generally, enjoy his performances, but I couldn’t help but feel that he was recruited for the simple fact of ‘we need another famous face to bring in the viewers’ & he was, unfortunately/fortunately (depending on which side of the coin you’re looking at it from), that guy. The idea of this story/movie was great, yet the budget wasn’t there & the moments of ‘did that scene really just happen!?’ needed to be edited out indefinitely. Bird Box will always be a movie that had the foundation to be something people could fondly remember. Unfortunately, what transpired, was something you will very quickly forget about. |
