bodyExcellent post for the noobs. I have many friends entering the market and i constantly get questions like: "should I buy Ripple because its cheap...? etc etc". I then try to explain that it is not the unit price that should be your determining factor, there are more important variables to consider. Anyway thanks for this perspective, it will help me from repeating myself daily lol

title😱 Why Price Doesn't Matter And 'Cheap Cryptos' Are Bullshit
body![giphy (17).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmahcxGZHVq8q1PkMmkXZsG3q3iC3CnNia8Sai4RPHwnXH/giphy%20(17).gif) **What's going on:** Bitcoin is not only king of crypto land in terms of mainstream-attention it is getting, but it's also the most expensive (serious and legit) coin around. So a lot of people are intimidated by a price of around 14k $ and argue that they can't afford BTC, because it's too expensive to buy ONE and are therefore looking for cheaper coins. But here's the catch: The price-discussion is bullshit and the hunt for 'cheap coins' under 1 $ is too. In fact, to assess a coin's growth potential you have to look at a couple of different indicators: What's the circulating supply? How high is the trade volume? And remember: Market Cap = Price X Circulating Supply. And most important: Is the coin just pump and dump, or is it something with a good team, a practical use-case, a real product and substantial technology? These are questions that matter far more than just looking if a coin is under 1 $ or above. **Why should I care:** Sure, people with experience in crypto know better, but a lot of newbies think 'cheap' altcoins are a good start to invest in crypto (spoiler: they're not). And this misunderstanding is by the way one of the reasons why Dogecoin or Dentacoin exploded the last couple of days. To fix this and to lower the psychological barrier for new investors, Bitcoin-developer Jimmy Song came up with an [interesting idea](https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/bitcoin-dev/2017-December/015399.html): introduce smaller units of Bitcoin. He released a standards proposal where he explains how this could work. A one-millionth of a bitcoin would be about one cent at today's prices and would be called a "bit." To implement this idea, wallet providers, exchanges and other bitcoin businesses have to to support his proposal. ![unnamed (1).png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVxajDJSc7qx5CodkbKdZWgWPjRbpiNFc98R8DpVZEFdL/unnamed%20(1).png) *Source: [twitter.com/boxmining/](https://twitter.com/boxmining/status/949127824064921601)* I think that Song's proposal is an interesting idea to make Bitcoin more attractive for newbies. It will be even more needed in case BTC rises to new heights in the next couple of months. But we will have to wait and see if this happens and if Song's idea will be heard and implemented or not. **Source:** [coindesk.com](https://www.coindesk.com/no-dont-buy-whole-bitcoin/), [lists.linuxfoundation.org](https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/bitcoin-dev/2017-December/015399.html) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/bullshit-spongebob-squarepants-qL2kQFdyzApRS)

title💥 Atomic Swaps Could Be Here Soon And Change A Lot
body![giphy (8).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTjjSaAWafWifiqFkhcGrndGQvmpaVG5NqytMSTKE8RDk/giphy%20(8).gif) **What's going on:** The big advantage of cryptos is the use of a decentralized, distributed ledger, that makes it impossible to hack or change a running blockchain (except doomsday scenarios like a 51% attack of course). But here's the catch: We trust crypto because of it's decentralized, immutable technology and yet have to use centralized, hackable exchanges like Kraken, Binance or GDAX who remain a single point of failure. But there is hope: Atomic Swaps will allow the exchange of one cryptocurrency for another cryptocurrency without the need for a trusted third party. Jameson Loop, BitGo engineer and Twitter-celebrity, tweeted some days ago: *"From a recent conversation I had with someone who is building it: 'Nearly instant atomic swaps via Lightning Network are coming sooner than everyone thinks. Definitely not a year away, but mere months.'"* Some cases of Atomic Swaps are already here: The first on-chain atomic swap transaction occurred on 1 October 2017 between Decred and Litecoin. In November 2017, the first off-chain atomic swap between Bitcoin and Litecoin [happened](https://www.coindesk.com/atomic-action-will-2018-year-cross-blockchain-swap/). There even is a handy site called [swapready.net](http://swapready.net/), where you can check the development of Atomic Swaps. But there are still obstacles in the way. Elizabeth Stark, CEO of Lightning Labs, recently discounted the hype, writing on a development channel, "Anyone telling people that Lightning swaps will be ready in months doesn't know what they're talking about." And in interview with CoinDesk, Stark said: "There's still a good amount of infrastructure to build." **Why should I care:** Atomic Swaps between Bitcoin and Ethereum for example would be a big deal: the two blockchains could communicate with each other in a trustless way. This means that users could have an ERC-20 bitcoin on the ethereum blockchain, pegged one to one with bitcoin on the bitcoin blockchain. This could not only put the potential of both Blockchains a huge leap forward, but would also strengthen their dominance in the market. It's possible that we see some Blockchains interacting with each other in 2018. But it will take a while for it to really take off, so 2019, 2020 or even 2021 are safer bets for Atomic Swaps to get really mainstream. **Source:** [coindesk.com](https://www.coindesk.com/atomic-action-will-2018-year-cross-blockchain-swap/), [hackernoon.com](https://hackernoon.com/atomic-swap-why-its-a-game-changer-for-exchanges-fb1380f5cb6c) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/bomb-atomic-XUFPGrX5Zis6Y) **Want to get essential news on Cryptocurrencies and everything Blockchain for free? "body": "![giphy (8).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTjjSaAWafWifiqFkhcGrndGQvmpaVG5NqytMSTKE8RDk/giphy%20(8).gif)\n\n**What's going on:** The big advantage of cryptos is the use of a decentralized, distributed ledger, that makes it impossible to hack or change a running blockchain (except doomsday scenarios like a 51% attack of course). But here's the catch: We trust crypto because of it's decentralized, immutable technology and yet have to use centralized, hackable exchanges like Kraken, Binance or GDAX who remain a single point of failure.\n\nBut there is hope: Atomic Swaps will allow the exchange of one cryptocurrency for another cryptocurrency without the need for a trusted third party. Jameson Loop, BitGo engineer and Twitter-celebrity, tweeted some days ago: *\"From a recent conversation I had with someone who is building it: 'Nearly instant atomic swaps via Lightning Network are coming sooner than everyone thinks. Definitely not a year away, but mere months.'\"*\n\nSome cases of Atomic Swaps are already here: The first on-chain atomic swap transaction occurred on 1 October 2017 between Decred and Litecoin. In November 2017, the first off-chain atomic swap between Bitcoin and Litecoin [happened](https://www.coindesk.com/atomic-action-will-2018-year-cross-blockchain-swap/). There even is a handy site called [swapready.net](http://swapready.net/), where you can check the development of Atomic Swaps.\n\nBut there are still obstacles in the way. Elizabeth Stark, CEO of Lightning Labs, recently discounted the hype, writing on a development channel, \"Anyone telling people that Lightning swaps will be ready in months doesn't know what they're talking about.\" And in interview with CoinDesk, Stark said: \"There's still a good amount of infrastructure to build.\"\n\n**Why should I care:** Atomic Swaps between Bitcoin and Ethereum for example would be a big deal: the two blockchains could communicate with each other in a trustless way. This means that users could have an ERC-20 bitcoin on the ethereum blockchain, pegged one to one with bitcoin on the bitcoin blockchain. This could not only put the potential of both Blockchains a huge leap forward, but would also strengthen their dominance in the market.\n\nIt's possible that we see some Blockchains interacting with each other in 2018. But it will take a while for it to really take off, so 2019, 2020 or even 2021 are safer bets for Atomic Swaps to get really mainstream.\n\n**Source:** [coindesk.com](https://www.coindesk.com/atomic-action-will-2018-year-cross-blockchain-swap/), [hackernoon.com](https://hackernoon.com/atomic-swap-why-its-a-game-changer-for-exchanges-fb1380f5cb6c)\n**GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/bomb-atomic-XUFPGrX5Zis6Y)\n\n**Want to get essential news on Cryptocurrencies and everything Blockchain for free? title⚠ Why Government Cryptos Could Pose A Threat To Our Privacy
body![giphy (7).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQme8pxa6g3DJEg4xE5EgjGv5CUBpC6d2TA1CcabwcJJdiN/giphy%20(7).gif) **What's going on:** Governments across the globe are still not sure what to do with cryptocurrencies. Ban them like China? Embrace them like Estonia? Or just accept them for now and tinker on regulatory mechanisms like most western states? Well, there is another option that is currently explored by several countries like China, Japan, Sweden, Venezuela, Estonia and Russia: develop some form of own, central bank owned digital currency. So how could those government coins look like? - First, they will not at all be like Bitcoin. Instead they will be centralized. - It's questionable if we should still call them "crypto", because they will not be independent of central banks and governments, but instead be the exact opposite. It makes more sense to call them "digital fiat" or "digital currency". - Because of what they are, centralized digital currencies are no threat to Bitcoin and other cryptos, but to the privacy of citizens: Sure, people will have a convenient way of sending and spending money on the internet. But this also means that you are transparent as you can be – that's even more scary in authoritarian countries. - Denmark for example is moving towards a cashless society for years, even before Bitcoin existed. So the crypto trend is basically just a nice coincidence to make central bank controlled digital fiat cool. **Why should I care:** The idea behind digital currencies is not new at all, but the crypto-boom of 2017 was a watershed year for the topic. Now governments have to decide if they want to be part of a revolution bigger than the Internet, or stand on the sidelines and do nothing. But: Not everything that is digital money and uses some sort of blockchain is crypto. In fact government issued digital cash is the exact opposite of crypto: central bank owned and issued money, that is not private at all and is even better to control than oldschool fiat money. **Source:** [mashable.com](http://mashable.com/2018/01/08/cryptocurrency-bitcoin-governments/#lOd31BgtVaqo), [cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/30/cryptocurrency-craze-springboards-government-backed-coin.html) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/southparkgifs-l0HlzP3Wyx0FLuzp6) **Want to get essential news on Cryptocurrencies and everything Blockchain for free? title👶 2018 Will Be The Year ICOs Grow Up
body![giphy (6).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYb8J2SJNJgXmJ8rVLau6yN78WBXfAh9qTVwZfj5fAcYp/giphy%20(6).gif) **What's going on:** The ICO craze, that started in mid 2017, was bonkers. Hundreds of more or less shady startups promised to ignite the blockchain-revolution for ... you name it. There were some obvious scams, like [Confido](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/21/confido-ico-exit-scam-founders-run-away-with-375k.html) who's team simply disappeared with around 375k $ cash. And there were some successful yet bumpy ICOs like [Tezos](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bitcoin-tezos/tezos-organizers-hit-with-second-lawsuit-over-cryptocurrency-fundraiser-idUSKBN1DF37L), who's founders still spend a significant amount of their time in court. And while most of the projects who financed themselves with ICOs in the last couple of months still have to deliver what they promised (spoiler: they won't ... remember that around 90% of startups fail?) more and more established and well known companies are giving this fancy new crypto-money some love. WhatsApp competitor Telegram plans a multi-billion dollar ICO for it's own cryptocurrency. The “Telegram Open Network” (TON) will, unlike Kik Messenger's KIN, not be an ERC20-token but it's own and brand new third generation’ blockchain. Details have yet to emerge, but it seems that Telegram's ICO could be one of the largest to date. And it's potential is huge: a (most likely anonymous) cryptocurrency used in an encrypted, privacy focused messaging app that is independent from governments and banks. It's users could bypass remittance fees when sending funds across international borders, move sums of money privately thanks to the app’s encryption, deliver micropayments that would incur too high of credit card fees, and more. And: Telegram is already the favorite communication channel for the global cryptocurrency community. What's even more interesting is that Kodak, a company that missed the boat with digital photography and is now only a mere shadow of it's former self, announced that it is planning to sell it's own crypto token, which caused it's stock to surge 70%. And harddrive manufacturer Seagate mentioned in a blog post that they may have a stake in ripple. **Why should I care:** Just a week after [Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and Facebook will take a very close look on crypto in 2018](https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@cryptomizer.org/mark-zuckerberg-is-now-into-crypto-and-this-is-huge), it seems that it is gonna be one of the big trends during this year: established, big companies start implementing blockchain technology or even begin issuing their own crypto coins. It seems that 2017 was some kind of test run to show that ICOs really work and can be used as an alternative to venture capital or a classic IPO (though legislation in most countries is yet unclear). **Source:** [techcrunch.com](https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/08/telegram-open-network/), [bloomberg.com](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-10/movie-pass-owner-joins-kodak-as-crypto-mania-grips-establishment?cmpid=socialflow-facebook-business&utm_content=business&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/money-eastbound-and-down-kenny-powers-qi8Yhj4pKcIec) **Want to get essential news on Cryptocurrencies and everything Blockchain for free? And while most of the projects who financed themselves with ICOs in the last couple of months still have to deliver what they promised (spoiler: they won't ... remember that around 90% of startups fail?) more and more established and well known companies are giving this fancy new crypto-money some love.\n\nWhatsApp competitor Telegram plans a multi-billion dollar ICO for it's own cryptocurrency. And: Telegram is already the favorite communication channel for the global cryptocurrency community.\n\nWhat's even more interesting is that Kodak, a company that missed the boat with digital photography and is now only a mere shadow of it's former self, announced that it is planning to sell it's own crypto token, which caused it's stock to surge 70%. And harddrive manufacturer Seagate mentioned in a blog post that they may have a stake in ripple.\n\n**Why should I care:** Just a week after [Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and Facebook will take a very close look on crypto in 2018](https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@cryptomizer.org/mark-zuckerberg-is-now-into-crypto-and-this-is-huge), it seems that it is gonna be one of the big trends during this year: established, big companies start implementing blockchain technology or even begin issuing their own crypto coins. It seems that 2017 was some kind of test run to show that ICOs really work and can be used as an alternative to venture capital or a classic IPO (though legislation in most countries is yet unclear).\n\n**Source:** [techcrunch.com](https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/08/telegram-open-network/), [bloomberg.com](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-10/movie-pass-owner-joins-kodak-as-crypto-mania-grips-establishment?cmpid=socialflow-facebook-business&utm_content=business&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social)\n**GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/money-eastbound-and-down-kenny-powers-qi8Yhj4pKcIec)\n\n**Want to get essential news on Cryptocurrencies and everything Blockchain for free? title🔨 China Likely to Start Crackdown on Bitcoin Mining
body![giphy (5).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfEKyXg3Dbm49d6DFFKsvmYm3VoBUCzmbMnL42pXrv44E/giphy%20(5).gif) **What's going on:** China and Cryptocurrencies: a lovestory that doesn't seem to happen anytime soon. After the government officially ordered local crypto exchanges to shut down and banned ICOs last year, they are now readying a massive blow against crypto mining operations in the country. It seems that the government doesn't want miners to keep exploiting cheap energy cost from coal powerplants. In [leaked documents](https://twitter.com/cryptovenus/status/949405526315716608) finance regulators are said to have initiated a final and severe clampdown on cryptocurrencies. It basically says that Bitcoin miners must make an “orderly exit” from China because they have consumed “huge amounts of resources and stoked speculation.” What's interesting is, that in some areas mining businesses have partnered with local governments to ensure a steady supply of electricity at discounted rates, with a portion of the profits returned to the local authorities. That’s offered a welcome economic boost in regions where more traditional industries are struggling. But this doesn't seem to be a sustainable operation. Now China is dissolving any such agreements and deals that had previously been struck. **Why should I care:** It's true that the market was able to handle the actions taken so far, and it is also true that there is a pretty popular investment advice, that one should invest in the things the Chinese are banning. But: Three-quarters of all Bitcoin mining is done in China. Plus the most popular hardware used around the globe is produced there (like the products from [Bitmain](https://www.bitmain.com/) for example). Perhaps wary of additional regulation, China’s bitcoin mining giants have already branched out to open new facilities in countries like Iceland, Canada and the U.S. Nonetheless, a serious move to crush the mining industry has the potential to impact bitcoin. **Source:** [techcrunch.com](https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/08/china-is-reportedly-moving-to-clampdown-on-bitcoin-miners/?ncid=rss&utm_source=tcfbpage&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Techcrunch+%28TechCrunch%29&utm_content=FaceBook&sr_share=facebook), [twitter.com](https://twitter.com/cryptovenus/status/949405526315716608) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/angry-panda-1hiVNxD34TpC0)

body![source (1).gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeWnTSvt7Gk8VEw1KdYi6gc5rhCVrJKdUggeuDRdedSLG/source%20(1).gif) **What's going on:** The run on crypto is far from over, it seems that it has only just begun: [cointelegraph.com](https://cointelegraph.com/news/exponential-growth-cryptocurrency-exchanges-are-adding-100000-users-per-day) reports that the most popular exchanges are adding around 100,000 users – per day! Back in November Coinbase, the largest ans easiest to use exchange in the US, said that they [added about 100,000 accounts](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/25/bitcoin-tops-8700-to-record-high-as-coinbase-adds-100000-users.html) around Thanksgiving holiday. Now Changpeng Zhao, who is the founder and CEO of Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally with an enormous $9.5 bln daily trading volume, announced that they currently add more than 250,000 users on a single day. The demand for new accounts has been so high, that Binance stated last week, that “due to the overwhelming surge in popularity, Binance will have to temporarily disable new user registrations to allow for an infrastructure upgrade.” South Korean exchange Bithumb, which is the world’s second largest cryptocurrency exchange in terms of daily trading volume, also stopped accepting new users. **Why should I care:** These developments show two things: more and more people want to invest in crypto and the most popular exchanges are struggling to adapt to huge demand. Exchanges like Binance, Kraken or Coinbase hired a lot of new employees in 2017 and are now valued as multi-billion US-dollar companies. Strict Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) systems the companies were forced to implement by the authorities in 2017 and the fact that user applications must be manually approved and verified, make the process painstakingly time consuming. One can only guess how many people want in right now. The number is for sure higher than the 100,000+ accounts, that are roughly added every day. It will be interesting to see how exchanges adapt in the coming weeks and months, what kind of new legislation is on the way to either make it easier or harder for them and how decentralized approaches like [kyber.network](https://kyber.network/) or the [0x protocol](https://0xproject.com/) will impact the space. **Source:** [cointelegraph.com](https://cointelegraph.com/news/exponential-growth-cryptocurrency-exchanges-are-adding-100000-users-per-day), [cointelegraph.com](https://cointelegraph.com/news/binance-bitfinex-bittrex-temporarily-say-no-to-new-users) **GIF:** [giphy.com](https://giphy.com/gifs/explode-W5d9ev6VZVPq)
