And even though I really love mythology, neither was it their Greco naming protocols. Daedalus built a labyrinth for King Minos, who needed it to imprison his wife's son, the Minotaur. According to Ovid in Metamorphoses, Daedalus built it so well he couldn't find his way out. Richard has worked for BSkyB and was part of the creative leadership of the ethereum launch.\n\nHe manages the design team for IOHK out of London, and gives creative direction to the brand for IOHK.\n\nI’m personally extremely excited about the future of Cardano. The blockchain is always accessible and universally true. \n\nThink about the implications of that. It removes the need to trust third parties in any transaction of any kind.  \n\nNext up Substratum.  If you’ve ever been to china you know how annoying it is to have a different internet to the rest of the world. \n\nSubstratum is proposing a new web that allows any computer to host tiny portions of websites. When you want to access a particular site, your machine pings the network and they all ping you back their own little piece to be assembled. \n\nNo one can shut it down because it’s local and decentralised, split up over dozens or hundreds or thousands of machines. Hosts will earn Substrate for lending their compute power to the network.\n\nFinally there’s IOTA. They’ve developed the 3rd generation crypto, which uses a tangle instead of a blockchain. Basically that means the more people who use the network the faster it becomes.  \n \nBut the reason they’re interesting is because they want to be the currency for the Internet of Things. So if in future your electric car realises it’s low on battery, it can drive itself to the power point, charge up and pay for it’s own purchase using IOTA. That’s a very basic example. This article is intended to give you the minimum information in very basic layman’s terms to make your first investment, as well as provide resources I’ve found helpful.   \n\n**Bitcoin and Blockchain**\nBitcoin is the currency. Blockchain is the technology. In my opinion, every great cryptocurrency has a useful underlying technology. Bitcoin is the granddaddy (although struggling with speed, scaling issues and high transaction fees).\n\nBlockchain = a chain of blocks\nEach block contains data.\nWhat kind of data? \nTransactions to be specific. \nHow do they get into a block? \nWell, each time you send a transaction, you transmit it to the network. \nYour transaction goes into a queue to be “mined”. \nMiners are people who voluntarily “confirm” transactions, bundle your transaction with a bunch of others to create a “block” and attach it to the chain. \nBecause mining requires compute power (literally machines running 24/7 using electricity) miners are rewarded with Bitcoin. \nThat’s it. Unless you plan on getting into mining you don’t need to know any more. \n\nThe blockchain is public and every transaction is there as a public record. \n\nThis is critical. \n\nThe invention of the Blockchain allowed Bitcoin to be born. \n\nUntil the Blockchain, smart people had tried for decades to invent digital currencies but there was no universal public ledger to prevent fraud.    \n\nA universal and “always true” public ledger changed everything. \n\nNo one can fraudulently produce value (i.e. Bitcoin). Every wallet (more on wallets later) and every transaction can be inspected without revealing the personal details of the owner. \n\n**Decentralisation**\n\nDecentralisation is another word you’ll hear a lot. That means what you think it means and it’s great for a couple of reasons. Without getting too philosophical, these include: \n\n1.\tNo central authority controls the Blockchain. It’s by the people for the people. \n2.\tCentral banks/governments can’t use simply “print more money” meaning cryptos are deflationary rather than inflationary (they are worth more over time, not less). \n\n\n**OK enough waffle I want to know how to buy Bitcoin**\n\nYou need to understand 3 things: \n\n1.\tExchanges – where you buy and sell \n2.\tWallets – where you store \n3.\tSecurity \n\n\n**1. Exchanges** \nExchanges are governed by financial regulations. KYC stands for Know Your Customer, and requires them to ask you for proof of identity. \n\nYou’ll need: \nDriver’s license \nUtility bill \nSelfie \n\n**Coinspot.com.au** \nNice user interface and approval is pretty quick. \n\n**Coinbase.com**\nSign up to this one and when you’re ready to buy, check the price on both exchanges and just buy the cheapest available. \n\nThere are others but that’s all you need for now. \n\nIMPORTANT: When you buy, your coins will be available in the built-in wallet on your dashboard. DO NOT leave them there. Exchanges are still centralised (meaning you are not the authority, someone else is). Immediately transfer your coins to a wallet to which you hold the private keys. \n\nHUH? \n\n\n**2. Wallets**\n\n**Blockchain.info**\nClick “Get a free wallet” and follow the prompts. \nWRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. TWICE. \nI can’t stress this enough. There is no way to recover lost keys. There is no backup if you don’t make a backup copy. \n\nI’d also drop a hundred bucks on a Ledger Nano S or Trezor – these are physical hardware wallets that basically “take your coins offline” so they can’t be hacked. \n\n**MyEtherWallet.com (MEW)**\nEnter a password and click “Create a new wallet” then follow the prompts. Again, write everything down. Twice.  \nDownload and save your JSON file in a safe place if you don’t want to type your private key each time you want access to your wallet. You’ll notice each time you switch tabs it will prompt you to log in again. \n\n**3. Security** \n\n**Google Authenticator** \nDownload the Google Authenticator app. \nThen setup 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) for your:\n•\tExchange \n•\tWallet\n•\tEmail account \n\nYou'll need to go to your account or security settings for each one, and follow the instructions. \n\nWRITE EVERYTHING DOWN! You will need a way to recover accounts if your phone is ever broken/stolen/destroyed by a toddler. \n\n\n**Key Resources** \n\n**Buzzwords you’ll see a lot:** \n\n**DYOR** \nDo Your Own Research. \n\n**FUD** \nStands for Fear Uncertainty and Doubt. Don’t spread FUD and don’t listen to FUD. DYOR. \n\n**FOMO** \nFear of Missing Out – don’t act out of FOMO. It’s dangerous. \n\n**JOMO**\nJoy of Missing Out. Ok this one is not very common but it’s the sense of euphoria you get after not investing in a project that fails. \n\n**HODL** \nA misspelling of HOLD that has become crypto lore. Some say it stands for Hold On For Dear Life.  Either way it means don’t sell, especially in a panic. \n\n**MOON**\nWhen a price goes shooting up. \n\n**BULLISH** \nOptimistic (basically).\n\n**BEARISH**\nPessimistic (basically).\n\n**VOLATILITY** \nThe gap between a price high and price low is the measure of volatility. The higher the high and the lower the low, the more volatile (basically).\n\n**WHO TO FOLLOW**\nHere are just a few good ones to get you started. Mostly used by developers to discuss technical matters but it’s worth having in case you ever have a question you need answered urgently. \n\n**Blockfolio** \nSimple portfolio tracking app. \n\n**Discord** \nCommunity driven chat. \n\n\n**ESSENTIAL WESBITES** \n\n**Coinmarketcap.com**\nBirds eye view of the entire crypto market. \n\n**Cryptocompare.com**\nSimilar to Blockfolio but you can sign up with Facebook and create portfolios to monitor holdings, or even create fantasy portfolios to test your strategies. \n\n**Tradingview.com**\nInteractive charts where you can do your own technical analysis. \n\n**Coincheckup.com** \nA crypto research platform. \n\nThat’s the basics – enough to get your started.
