| body | There are multiple ways people can store bitcoins offline, using either a paper wallet or hardware options from companies like Trezor, Opendime, Ledger, and Keepkey. However, bitcoin users can also create a bitcoin wallet on a far cheaper USB thumb drive as well to store coins offline. Creating an Inexpensive Bitcoin Wallet USB Thumb Drive Today we’re going to detail how to create a secure bitcoin wallet with an inexpensive USB drive. There are a few different wallets you can download for this particular operation, but for this walkthrough, we will use an Electrum wallet. Other lightweight bitcoin clients used should follow a similar installation process. The first thing you want to do is download the Electrum wallet to your computer. The software can be used on Mac OS, Windows and Linux systems and takes only a few minutes to download. The next step after downloading the wallet software is to install it directly on the USB drive. It’s not the best idea to use the USB thumb drive for any other applications, and the drive should be utilized solely as a bitcoin wallet, but of course, that’s optional. Installing the Wallet Into the USB Drive Offline Following the USB drive installation, you can opt to shut off your internet services and local area connection to perform the installation offline. It’s a good idea to safely remove the USB and restart your computer as well before installation. After a system reboot and you are sure your operating system is offline you can then plug the USB device back into the computer for the next steps. Next, navigate to the USB drive folder and open the installer program for the wallet. The client won’t be able to connect to the Bitcoin network, but you can still create a new wallet. The installation procedure is the same, and the new wallet app needs to be installed to the USB drive folder as well. Then, you’ll be directed through the security section where you should create a strong password and write down your seed phrase. Always remember if you lose the password or seed phrase you will not be able to recover your bitcoins on that wallet. A Cheap Little Bank or Bearer Bond Instrument After you secure your wallet with an encrypted passphrase and get your seed, you will then have a fresh new wallet that can send and receive bitcoins. Just like a hardware wallet, you will need the device to access your keys, and you will also be able to restore it with a seed if the USB stick was lost, damaged or stolen. This method can cost you less than $2 for a generic USB drive which is far cheaper than $60-150 hardware products. Further with some directions, they can also be used as a bearer bond instrument by just handing someone some bitcoin off-chain. |

| body | The Blockchain Split Scenario: Staying Informed and Backing Up Bitcoin KeysRight now over the course of the next 3-4 months, there are many plans for the Bitcoin network. Often times at Bitcoin.com we have discussed this matter in great detail, but people still wonder what will happen to their bitcoin holdings if the blockchain splits. Several potential outcomes can happen with these particular three ideas; The user activated soft fork (UASF) that begins on August 1, Segwit2x which starts around mid-July to October, and the more recent Bitcoin ABC (UAHF) that might deploy in August. There’s a number of things that could happen with any one of these plans, but the biggest fear is the possibility of a chain split. A chain split is when the blockchain fractures into two chains due to the fact that consensus was not met during an upgrade. That means a particular portion of the Bitcoin network participants disagreed on the plan and chose to ignore the other side’s rules or protocol upgrade. This happened with the Ethereum network, and now there is another blockchain called Ethereum Classic. Now, just because the Bitcoin blockchain splits it doesn’t mean the smaller chain will survive. But the first and foremost thing every bitcoin holder should know if they both survive; If you hold your private keys during a chain split you will be able to retrieve tokens for both chains. During a Chain Split, Significant Price Fluctuations and Confusion is Probable : That doesn’t mean you will double your money as one token will be worth considerably less than the chain with the most proof-of-work and possibly even be worthless. The chance of a smaller chain surviving with the current network difficulty for miners would be a tough thing to accomplish, and the chain would need a decent amount of support to survive. The new chain or the legacy chain does have a chance to grow longer than the other, and each chain will have a certain amount of hashrate. If there is a chain split the likeliness of significant price fluctuations and confusion is very probable. The best way to ensure your funds will be safe during a chain split is making sure you possess your private keys, backups, and make sure your seed and encryption phrases are secure. If you have possession of your keys, you don’t have to do anything but be patient and watch everything unfold. Stating the Obvious: Bitcoins Held on a Trading Platform Leaves You at the Mercy of the Exchange : If you keep your money on an exchange or with a third party that possesses your bitcoin keys you will have to deal with the decisions they decide to make during and after a chain split. People often ask this when learning about the possibility of a chain split and it should be fairly obvious you must surrender to their control. There may be lots of confusion and exchanges may halt trading. Trading platforms may also disable deposits and withdrawals during these times as well. Some of the largest bitcoin exchanges or brokerage services could go offline, and you may not have access to your bitcoins. The point is; if they hold your funds you will have to abide by their rules, guidelines and possible unfavorable outcomes. Take Some Time to Secure Your Keys and Backups : During the next few weeks, people will have time to make sure their backups and seeds are in order and they can also move their funds off exchanges. However, the choice is entirely up to the user, and there will likely be many individuals who leave their bitcoins with third parties. Split or no split, giving the custodial rights to your bitcoins will always leave you at the mercy of that particular business or operation. Furthermore, there is also a chance that the bitcoin community participants do come to consensus and there is no chain split whatsoever. However just to be on the safe side, there are a few steps below detailing what people can do to make sure they hold their private keys and everything is backed up and safe for the next few months. Alongside this, there are also a few articles that go over chain splits, the upcoming scaling plans, cold storage solutions and more so you can further your knowledge about these subjects. |

| body | For non technical users: If UASF succeeds or fails, in both cases, there will be only 1 bitcoin version in the end. In this case, the only thing you have to worry about is the volatility that might (or might not) happen to bitcoin price. The other thing that users are concerned about is the possibility of a chain split (in past we wrongly used the word ‘hard fork’ instead of chain split to describe this). That is, 2 versions of bitcoin get created. This has happened in the past with Ethereum in a different situation. This is not impossible. However, according to us, it is highly unlikely. As in our previous post in March 2017 about a chain split (hard fork), we reproduce (with some changes) the text again as it is valid to how we will deal with UASF as well. In the event of a chain split, Zebpay is technically equipped to handle it as well as any other exchange. We will act the way other bitcoin exchanges act, in the best interest of our users. What do we suggest you do? If you are technically savvy, you can transfer the bitcoins you have in your Zebpay wallet to a wallet in which you control the private keys of your bitcoins. You can use Mycelium, Copay, Bitgo or Trezor hardware wallet. This is just a suggestion. Zebpay is not associated with any of these wallets. Do not do transactions from 1st August if this matter is not resolved before that and if we don’t have a clear winner. You can resume transactions once a clear scenario emerges. Do not accept or send transactions from 31st July. Do not consider a transaction final (send or receive) from 1st August till the situation settles. If you are not tech savvy enough to handle the above, you can continue to store your bitcoins in your Zebpay wallet. However, we reserve the right to handle these bitcoins as we deem fit and as explained below. So what about the price? Wish we knew :). Our guess is as good as yours, yesterday, today and tomorrow. For regular users, you can stop reading. However, if you want some technical jargon, continue. Support for both versions of bitcoin We have started working on supporting alt coins (that is, other crypto currencies besides bitcoin or different versions of bitcoin). So if required and if technically feasible, we will be able to support both versions of bitcoin in future. Suspending operations If a chain split happens, we shall suspend buy / sell operations on Zebpay. We will also not allow you to deposit or withdraw your bitcoins. This could be for a period of 1 week or more. All global exchanges will do this. This is to protect your bitcoins. We will keep monitoring the situation for technical risks. Since the chain split will happen in an unplanned way, we reserve the right to do the above without any prior notice. Once the situation has settled, we shall resume normal operations. Which bitcoin will we support We may provide support for: both the versions, the bitcoin which is more safe and stable, or the bitcoin that becomes more popular globally. We reserve the right to decide this. All this depends on market conditions. We will keep our users updated as we have more information on this. If you wish to control this decision, you should withdraw bitcoins from your Zebpay app to a wallet as suggested above. |

| body | Wonder if it's just a correction like we've seen on 15th of June or crypto market is nearing it's current potential. In 2017 we've seen a huge rise in market cap and lot of people joined in. Maybe what we see is a depletion of their buying power - at least for this "onboarding" batch. It could very well be - and I hope I am wrong - that after a decline to approx. 80BLN market cap, we'll see mostly sideways move for the rest of the year or until some major event. |

| body | It has been a rough weekend for cryptocurrencies, with 29 of the top 30 cryptocurrencies showing losses in the past 24 hours. The only currency to weather the storm was Ethereum Classic, which gained more than 8%. Ethereum drops below $250 The cryptocurrency showed a correction, dropping to levels not seen in more than two weeks, reaching just below $250 this morning. Despite the price correction, there is some good news for the Ethereum community, as the coin’s trading volume surpassed that of Bitcoin in the past 24 hours, reaching more than $1.19 billion. The currency displayed high volatility, with $30 separating this morning’s high and low. Also, it is important to note that from a broader perspective, today’s low is still above any level reached before the first week of June. Will the Bitcoin trend-reversal last? When Bitcoin reached near $3,000 just two weeks ago, some analysts were saying that the bull run could last, pushing it above $4,000 before month’s end. However, the Bitcoin graph has been mostly on the decline since, pushing it below the $2,500 mark again. More than anything, this past month has proved just how volatile these financial instruments are, giving plenty of opportunities for day traders, while still keeping at levels which made it a worthy investment for anyone who purchased the cryptocurrency before mid-May. Massive correction seen in cryptocurrency market Is the crypto-bull-run over? As more and more currencies are introduced into the cryptocurrency space, competition between the various token traded increases. However, it is still very common to see market-wide trends, such as the one seen over the past 24 hours. Only 1 of the top 30 currencies, Ethereum Classic, registered gains, as the other 29 showed losses ranging between 2.5% (Bitcoin) and nearly 20% (IOTA). All trading involves risk. Only risk capital you’re prepared to lose. The information above is not investment advice. This article was first posted on Etoro.com/blog: Our Premium Trading Partner. |

| body | It has become evident that miners are not opposed to the Bitcoin Core development team’s transaction malleability fix Segregated Witness (Segwit) given the overwhelming support towards Segwit2x, a proposal made by Barry Silbert-led Digital Currency group and 57 other companies that include major mining pool operators such as Bitmain. The hashrate signaling the activation of Segwit2x is currently over 90 percent at the time of writing. The proposal entails the activation of Segwit at an 80 percent activation threshold by September and the execution of a 2MB block size increase hard fork six months thereafter. The key component of the proposal is the activation of Segwit and given the 90 percent support from miners, it is quite clear that miners are in favor of activating Segwit. Segwit2x’s 91% miner support is strongest consensus signal ever for blocksz growth. Hard work is just beginning. https://t.co/ZyJ6YYr17E One condition requested by the miners is the execution of a 2MB block size increase hard fork which derived from the Hong Kong scaling agreement that was established in February of 2016. The majority of miners believe that the expected 75 percent optimization of block size through the activation of Segwit and additional scaling via second layer payment channels such as Lightning are not sufficient to address the explosive growth of the bitcoin industry and user base. Yet, the rapidly increasing support towards Segwit2x has proven to the industry and community that miners are not opposed to Segwit for technical reasons. In fact, a major mining pool operator ViaBTC, recently stated: “The main reason to refuse Segwit is because the roadmap of bitcoin core, not the technical detail.” The development team behind ViaBTC revealed that the company along with many China-based mining companies such as Bitmain’s Antpool have been opposed to Segwit due to their rejection of the Bitcoin Core development team’s roadmap. In particular, ViaBTC wrote in a blog post earlier this year that it does not approve Bitcoin Core’s roadmap of utilizing Segwit as a scaling solution. “Segwit, which is a soft fork solution for malleability, cannot solve the capacity problem. From Core members’ public statements, they didn’t attach necessary importance on this issue. Even if Segwit after activation can slightly scale up block size with new transaction formats, it’s still far behind the demand for the development of Bitcoin network,” wrote the ViaBTC development team. However, one of the solutions offered by Segwit is the infrastructure for two layer solutions such as Lightning which are expected to open doors for a wide range of services and applications that can operate on top of bitcoin and most importantly, significantly lower transaction fees through the usage of payment channels. Similar to the viewpoint of Bitmain, ViaBTC claimed that the implementation of Lightning and payment channels will lead to centralization of transactions by deviating from direct on-chain peer to peer transactions to payment channel-based transactions. To this date, Bitcoin Core, the industry and community have been straightforward with the scaling roadmap. Activate Segwit to strengthen security measures by eliminating transaction malleability and providing better infrastructure for hardware wallets and establish a working platform for two layer solutions for long-term scalability. The scaling debate has started to see some progress as miners agreed to activate Segwit given a condition to increase the block size by 2MB. Given that the mining community is opposed to the sole activation of Segwit due to non-technical reasons, over the next few weeks, the bitcoin industry is likely to see major progress with scaling. |

| body | It has become evident that miners are not opposed to the Bitcoin Core development team’s transaction malleability fix Segregated Witness (Segwit) given the overwhelming support towards Segwit2x, a proposal made by Barry Silbert-led Digital Currency group and 57 other companies that include major mining pool operators such as Bitmain. Hard work is just beginning. https://t.co/ZyJ6YYr17E — Mike Belshe (@mikebelshe) June 22, 2017 One condition requested by the miners is the execution of a 2MB block size increase hard fork which derived from the Hong Kong scaling agreement that was established in February of 2016. |
