| title | Minds Pro Offers New Revenue Model for Content Creators |
| body | As someone who is trying to make a living as a content creator, I've tried to manage my own websites in the past. This is a total pain in the ass because, for one, most hosting providers seem to be high school dropouts or something who only code and do development as a hobby. The sites are clunky and barely functional. Then there is the cost. At the low end, you're paying $17 dollars a month for a barely functioning site, and close to $100 for a usually functioning site. Then you gotta apply to get ads – that takes weeks – and eventually in a year or two you can start breaking even. Sounds fantastic, right? About a year ago I found out about [Minds](https://www.minds.com/register?referrer=coty_reh), which is a distributed social networking and blogging site that is built on top of the ethereum blockchain. It describes itself as a "Crypto Social Network" that upholds internet freedom. I started writing on minds and building my audience back then because I was able to earn tokens from views and engagements on my posts. Now, it has finally released its [Minds Pro](https://www.minds.com/pro?referrer=coty_reh), which allows you to earn either USD, Ethereum, or bitcoin for the traffic that comes to your blogs, videos, etc. As a pro channel on minds you get quite a few perks. One being that you earn $1 for every 1,000 pageviews on your content, which is roughly what you get if you use ad networks on a personal site. This then increases to $5 between 100K and 1M pageviews. Minds is able to do this because the traffic you drive to your channel into the rest of the site has an economic value for the whole network that they then pay you for. And speaking of a personal site, if you have a pro channel on minds, you are able to turn your channel into a complete website with a custom domain or subdomain. You get your own website where you can use your own custom logo, newsfeed, categories, footer, background, color themes and more. You have access to an analytics console and the ability to upload image and video files up to 60 minutes in length, 5 GB in size and 1080p in definition. This is everything that you would get from trying to manage your own personal site, but you are more likely to reach an audience organically through the network compared to getting buried by an algorithm. You can pay the subscription for Minds Pro in a number of ways. There are yearly and monthly subscriptions for $40 a month or $50 per month, respectively -- Or, you can pay for it with the Minds Token, which gets paid out to you daily based on the engagement you received that day. You will also be able to receive direct payments from your fans in USD, Bitcoin, Ether or Minds Tokens for tips or paid subscriptions. If you're a content creator looking to grow your audience and have your own website where you get paid for your traffic, [then definitely try out Minds Pro](https://www.minds.com/pro?referrer=coty_reh). |

| title | The Difference Between Written Language and the Language Inside Your Head |
| body | If you are reading an essay called “Postscripts and Annotations”, then there is a strong chance you were the kind of weird fifth grader who had his nose in an encyclopedia all the time – or an almanac or other useless trivia. If you were, don't worry; I was too. This is a safe space for pedants. As the title suggests, these are the afterthoughts and the notes in the margins of what I've already written. Why write about the same topics again? Well... my vocabulary has grown since then, and I think I have better ways of expressing them. Also, reading others' feedback has filled me in on the vocabulary of my audience, and their idiosyncrasies. The thing about written language is that it's concrete compared to the language that goes on in your head while you're off on your errands. I have an idea on my morning run. It makes perfect sense because it's only in my head, and the language I have available to me to express it to myself fits it seamlessly into my total worldview. The trouble comes when I come home to put it on paper. Before, the idea was ethereal and free flowing. When I write it, I stretch it out, pin it down, and force it into a rigid structure. It's only at this point that I notice problems with the idea that the language inside of head shrouded. Not only that, but when I post the idea online, the reader will never fully digest it and assimilate it into he mind the way I see it. She has a different vocabulary, different idiosyncrasies, and the idea doesn't fit as neatly into her mind as it does in mine. In fact, the idea likely becomes foreign to me inside her head. What I write may make perfect sense to her, but in different ways than it does for me. She has access to other ideas and facts I don't, and she projects those onto my idea. When she digests and assimilates my perfect idea, she stretches it out, pins it down, and forces it into a rigid structure. Other people's minds are black boxes this way. . . . You can find the [rest of this essay](https://www.minds.com/coty_reh/blog/postscripts-annotations-01-1047955685616304128?referrer=coty_reh) on my channel at Minds. I write on Minds because it allows me to find and grow my audience in the weird and different niches I enjoy, and it is now rolling out the beta version of its monetization system - which includes the option to turn your channel into its own site where you can make money from the traffic. [Check it out.](https://www.minds.com/register?referrer=coty_reh) . . . Have you had a similar problem when trying to communicate with others? What are your experiences? |

He collects 80 odd years of data (from 1949 to 2019 on our calendar) to answer the question: did American Civilization advance or decline in this time period? His species wants to know the odds that some form of society would still be around if they made the trip, so it's important he interprets the data correctly. Those of us in 2019 who've lived in this period have our answers to the question. One of those answers looks at how much GDP and the number of transistors on microchips has changed in that time. By this measure, American civilization has advanced. Then again, the technology of the Roman Empire continued on for centuries after Rome proper was in decline. Concerning the health of a society, some might call GDP and technology “lagging indicators”. It's for this reason that in his essay “Sam Altman is Not a Blithering Idiot”, Mencius Moldbug doesn't believe these measurements answer the alien's question. He says, _
“Any question with an obvious answer is a stupid question. “Is an iPad more advanced than a Smith-Corona?” is a stupid question. Who asks stupid questions? Obviously, blithering idiots. […] But we can compose an interesting question by factoring out the stupid question. Which world would Sam Altman rather live in? 2013, with iPads and teh Internet? Or 1950—with iPads and teh Internet?”
_ He reframes the question in this way for two reasons. The first being that the anachronistic 1950 is just as real as “the real 1950”. “Sam Altman cannot pack his bags and move to either the real 1950 or my imaginary super-1950,” he explains, “Both exist only as thought experiments.” Second, holding the technology variable constant accounts for a phenomenon called the hedonic treadmill – which describes the fact that no matter how well off we become, we don't sustain our feelings of happiness for very long. Historians and oncologists alike understand how individuals can grow unhappy and diseased even while their societies and tumors develop. The former observes that as technology advances in the background of a society, the IQ threshold to make a living in that society rises. The proportion of productive citizens to liabilities starts to get a little bottom-heavy. . . . I'm grateful that now they don't practice the violence anymore. But as your article mentioned, they do it more civilized subtle way possible. | title | Social Justice Headhunters |
| body | In 1886, explorer and anthropologist Elio Modigliani spent some time with a community of headhunters on a Southeast Asian Island called South Nias. Living with and studying these men, he discovered that the motivation behind their headhunting came from the belief that if a man possessed another man's skull, the victim would become a slave to him for an eternity in the afterlife. Headhunting in primitive societies functioned as a part of the process of structuring hierarchies and distributing status among the men. One had higher status if they had a good headcount, but one also had status for a being a desired head. Headhunting in our “civilized” societies is less physically violent and aims more at tearing down the reputations of others, but it functions exactly the same as in the older societies. Take Kevin Hart, just before reaching the height of his career he was ambushed by a tribe of social justice headhunters. He didn't put up much of a fight and they easily strung him out by digging into his twitter history. Once he broke down and apologized, they had his head. Kevin Hart is now an eternal servant to social justice. Headhunters strike fear into the hearts of anyone who might consider challenging the new hierarchy they are building. Most people just assume not stirring up any trouble and learn to live comfortably in the new regime. Others are warriors at heart. Enter Dave Chappelle. After his recent Netflix special, the social justice headhunters put a big bounty on his head. Miraculously, Chappelle survived the initial headhunt. He did not apologize. No apology, no head. If a man puts himself in the way of danger and survives, he gains status. The more headhunts he survives, the more heroic he becomes, and he inspires more young men to put themselves in danger. The effect compounds on itself and eventually the young men drive out the enemy headhunters and restore order to the community. From Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings, “the way of the warrior is the resolute acceptance of death.” Check out my other writing at: https://www.cotyreh.net/ |

| body | When you ask people how long they want to live, most people in their late 20s and early 30s usually give a modest answer. “I don’t want to live much longer than 80 years. That’s plenty of time to do all the things I want to do and see all the places I want to see.” Imagine a genie appears to one of these 80-year-olds on the eve of his death. The genie breaks the news to him. “Already?!” exclaims the old man, “time went by fast.” “Did you not do all the things you wanted to do, or see all the places you wanted to see?” “Time got away from me. I still have unfinished business.” “How about two more weeks to set your affairs in order?” “Two weeks is more than enough time.” Two weeks go by and the genie visits the old man again on the eve of his death. “I have done everything I wanted to do and see all the places I wanted to see when I was in my twenties,” the old man says, “but now that I am on the eve of my death I realize that I have never visited Paris. I never wanted to visit Paris in the past, but now I regret not having that experience.” “How about two more weeks so that you may visit Paris, then?” “Two weeks is more than enough time.” This goes on for weeks. Weeks turn into months, months into years. The genie returns to the old man on the eve of his death, now 159 years with a failing liver and cancerous gray skin. “My great-great-great granddaughter graduates from college soon. I would regret missing out on that experience.” “I completely understand,” says the genie, “how about two more weeks to see your great-great-great granddaughter graduate from college.” “Two weeks is more than enough time.” |
