titleTwo Steps to Overcoming Anxiety
bodyI’ve been reading a lot of personal stories lately about what it’s like to live with anxiety. What’s striking to me is that we refer to it generically, when in fact, there are many different manifestations of anxiety. Categorically, the most common include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder (PD) (with & without) accompanying Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are overlapping symptoms in each of these conditions, yet each person’s anxiety is unique and deeply personal. What saddens me is that folks often view it as something they simply have to live with – as though it’s part of their genetic makeup or an unchangeable aspect of their way of being. It’s not. It never is. Anxiety isn’t genetic but it does run in families. It’s a product of unhealthy, learned behavior and unmet needs. It’s caused by trying not to feel what we truly feel and not to think about or remember things that cause negative emotions to surface. It’s a product of flawed perception, false beliefs and/or of not feeling safe, episodically and/or holistically. It’s often irrational and it ebbs and flows in response to triggers (things that set us off). Our biggest downfall is trying to hide it. This results in struggling alone and fighting with ourselves. The key to getting better is the choice to view oneself as a work in progress. There is no all better for us. Every day, we get opportunities to become better. I love getting better. I often hate the discomfort of growth and healing but I freaking love the results. It’s as my friends in AA say, “Acceptance is the answer to all of my problems today.” Acceptance = I am not a problem to be solved. I am a person to be loved. We fail to see that how we relate to ourselves constitutes a relationship. Being my own worst enemy and my own worst critic were what I knew to be…until I learned to use the Golden Rule in reverse: I am free to treat myself as I treat others. It had never been ingrained in me to do so, but the things that had been ingrained became things that could be drawn out and the things that were missing became things I took responsibility for giving to myself and accepting from others. The hardest thing I have ever accepted was (and sometimes still is) me – just as I am, warts and all. I have come to believe that I am powerless to change anything at all until I first accept, if only for this moment, that it is what it is and that I am how I am. As long as I am telling myself that I should be better I can’t get better. When I beat up on me, I ensure that improvements will not be made today. Close examination of what I used for self control revealed rejection of self and speaking to myself in a way I would consider cruel to address another person. These things do not occur consciously. The unhealthiest of habits are primarily subconsciously driven. They occur automatically and reflexively. No one has ever deliberately beaten themselves up verbally, nor do they make conscious decisions to neglect their own needs. Change occurred for me in two ways: 1. I took my therapist’s advice that I was free to treat myself as lovingly as I treated my children. She pointed out that my focus on my children’s well being was the opposite of my avoidance of self. She referred to it as: Attunement (noun): Being or bringing into harmony; a feeling of being “at one” with another being. (Read Benjamin Hoff’s The Tao of Pooh for more on harmony). 2. I sought out people like me. I am a misfit. I do not fit into mainstream society. (Nor do I want to). I connect to people who are wounded and working to get better. These folks get me and are happy to support me. (We give away what we want to receive). Reciprocity didn’t exist in my world. I was a one way street. I gave and did not receive. I’ve learned that it takes far more vulnerability to accept what good people offer (praise, recognition, appreciation, acceptance, friendship) and I came to accept that while I was not being selfish, I was being self centered. I decided for others how they should feel about me, think of me, and value me. Turns out I’m worth a lot more than I was ever comfortable believing. Bet you are too.

Joe's dad might be too old or too sick to work, but he has those safety nets thanks to those commie liberals. But thanks for reading some of my observation. bodyDay in the Life of Joe Republican Joe gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot with good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medications with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and to work as advertised. All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; his bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree-hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune. It's noon time, Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he were educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to Dad's; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark) He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad, he gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show, the host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, we don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, “I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have".

titleRainbow
bodyI was using my Rainbow the other day and I wondered why they have not become more ubiquitous as a household cleaning asset. Then, when I poured the detritus into my toilet, it struck me. People do NOT want to see the crap that it sucks up. And it sucks up A LOT. What’s a Rainbow you ask? Merely the best vacuum cleaner ever produced. Instead of a cloth or paper filter to entrap the crap that traditional vacuum cleaners employ, a Rainbow traps dust, dirt, debris, detritus, microbes, bugs, fleas, bedbugs and you-name-it in water. It uses a patented air/water separator and forces the junk into a canister with 2 quarts of water. There is no filter to clog or a bag that fills and stops the vacuum. A Rainbow succeeds in maintaining a steady molecular entrainment of vacuum and never fails to pick up stuff that other vacuums leave behind. I find beauty in seeing what you’ve sucked up when I open it up and dump out the dirty water, but I see now that I am the odd man out. Housewives especially don’t want to see the product of their work. If it is in a bag they can just discard, so much the better. And that water can get pretty nasty…I get it. More crap to clean, namely the canister. But if you put some cleaning agent in there, like ammonia, before each use, the canister stays relatively clean inside. Thirty five years ago I actually signed on to sell “air purification systems” and went to a demonstration where I first learned of Rainbow vacuum cleaners. I had never heard of them before but I was hooked. I immediately “got it”. I grew up thinking that a “Kirby” was the Cadillac of vacuum cleaners; hell I even spray painted the primer on my first car with one. Boy was I misled. Kirbys are heavy and clunky and can actually cause health problems…you can throw your back out hauling one of those around. And emptying or changing the bag…a mess! Rainbow salesmen refer to conventional vacuum cleaners as “dust pumps’ and with good reason. You are cautioned to dust your house AFTER you vacuum the floors. I no longer sell vacuum cleaners of any kind, but I got an education in selling door-to-door, in disreputable sales managers (I was cheated out of 3 sales – in Florida; no surprise there!) and, most importantly, in Rainbow vacuums. They cost $1,200 back then and that was a lot of money in 1982. I couldn’t afford one until some 10 years later I found one at the local flea market. Seller asked me if I knew what it was and I told him I know because I had sold them. He only wanted $20 for it because the wife didn’t want it anymore. “We have all hardwood floors now.” I think the wife didn’t like the idea of putting water in it and then having to empty it out. I have mostly hardwood floors in my 1902 Victorian and it does a great job, of couse. Rainbows also double as wet vacs to clean tile floors. You just have to make sure that you don’t suck up more water than the canister can properly hold. It has a powerhead to vacuum carpeted floors, too. So back to my original thought. The other reason Rainbow vacuums are not more ubiquitous is how they are sold, and I believe the sales system is the same as it was in 1982; it is basically a multi-level marketing pyramid like Amway. But, to be fair, other vacuums like Kirby and Electrolux are sold in a similar manner where you have an in-home demonstration. Rainbows, due to their unique technology, do require a demonstration in the comfort of your living room in order to fully appreciate their capabilities. Part of the in-home demonstration is to show what your current vacuum misses by going over the same are that the Mrs. Just vacuumed with her unit and showing all the crap that it left behind. But I digress. I got to keep my Rainbow through the divorce and managed to find another one at a tag sale for, you guessed it, $20! Last I heard, they cost $2,400 new and look very different from my 80’s model, but I’ve had it for 20+ years and it is still going strong. I would never get a Roomba, (they’re toys) or a Dyson or any of the other dust pumps currently advertised. You can find used Rainbows in online auction sites for a fraction of the retail price. Show up, out-perform, beat the Joneses and have fun! Full disclosure/disclaimer: I am not employed by any company that produces, distributes, advertises or sells vacuum claeners of any kind. I am only a consumer of various products, services, systems and images and use them as any normal consumer does. I am not compensated for any of my comments by any entity outside Steemit.

bodyI agree. The value against the USD is somewhat irrelevant. I am in crypto for the long term for when all fiat tanks completely. When that happens the analysts ans nay sayers will be begging us for our stored values in crypto.

titleBatteries.
bodyWe all have them and use them every day. They are a fact of modern life and we can’t live without them. You have one in your mobile phone, one in your laptop, your cordless phone, your car if you have one. And the ones I just listed are all rechargeable. Battery technology has been evolving and improving over the years. Batteries are the fuel in today’s electric vehicles and those batteries rely on recharging technology in the form of charging stations. My smartphone came with a “charging station” in the form of a plug-in adapter. I have two adapters; one at work and one at home. We take these for granted as we do the recharging technology of the alternators in our gasoline vehicles. One advantage of rechargeables such as nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer), is their light weight compared to conventional alkaline dry cells. I found this out when I placed NiMh batteries in a remote control toy car and the quickness and top speed were noticeably improved. Of course, that is most obvious in flying toys and the current generation of drones. I would contend that the evolution of electric flying toys and drones is directly tied to the evolution and improvement of a lightweight, rechargeable power supply. One distinct disadvantage of rechargeables that I’ve noticed is the sharp drop in power as the battery nears the end of its charge. Unlike alkaline batteries where the power loss, on a curve, is fairly slow and steady, rechargeable’s power drops off precipitously. I used to employ a trick to bring back alkaline battery power; I would tap or rap the battery sharply against a hard surface or another battery and that would “shake” the electrons back into line. A technique that doesn’t work with rechargeables, so having a rotating stock of freshly charged batteries makes sense. Yet there are still devices that do not take advantage of the rechargeable technology that we have in batteries. TV remotes, cable box remote controls, the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard that came with my computer. These came with conventional alkaline AA and AAA batteries. So when they no longer power the device, they are discarded. I realized this was too much like throwing money away so I decided to convert these devices to use rechargeable batteries. I bought a recharger that accepts AA, AAA and C cell batteries and a supply of rechargeable batteries. I also purchased a rack that holds all the batteries and it includes a battery tester. The rack also holds 9 volt cells for my smoke detectors. I find that the convenience of having fully charged batteries on hand far outweighs their initial cost. I do know that rechargeables have a finite number of cycles where, when reached, they will no longer hold a charge. Fair enough, but with 500 to 800 life cycles, I’d say the overall value exceeds buying scads of alkaline batteries and just throwing them in the trash when they are dead. How many of you have had flashlights, toys or other assets ruined by alkaline batteries that leaked acid and corroded the innards? That problem is negligible with rechargeables. Full disclosure/disclaimer: I am not employed by any company that produces, distributes, advertises or sells batteries of any kind. I am only a consumer of various products, services, systems and images and use them as any normal consumer does. I am not compensated for any of my comments by any entity outside Steemit.
