      "body": "Limping, sniffling and stuttering...\n\nWe had our camper. We had each other. Mother in Law following behind in case of misadventure. And a misadventure it was. Derek looked like a child that had, had all his Christmases come all at once. The sun was shining. The seats in the camper were comfortable. \n\nWe hadn’t really thought a lot of things all the way through in our over excited naiveté. For a start, we didn’t take into account that it was Saturday afternoon by the time we got the camper and headed for a family member’s farm. Small towns in South Africa are interesting, at around 2pm on a Saturday.... things tend to close and we needed fuel. So before we set off we got some directions to the nearest fuel station. \n\nHowever approximately 25km after happily trundling off with the camper, the entire cab was filled with smoke and smelling of burning oil, which precipitated a hurried stop next to the road. As we found out later, the dipstick set in the block? Yeah, that had come loose and separated itself from the casing... that was the oil that had been fouling up the cab and, spritzing itself out the back and all over mother’s pristine white Suzuki Celerio.\n\nAnd woe. The minute we tried to start the camper up again to get to the fuel station... She refused to start. That lack of foresight to bring... well anything for a 40 plus year old vehicle that we didn’t know? It left us with a bent teaspoon we found in the glove compartment to fix whatever had gone awry. Incidentally, that bent teaspoon has come in handy several times since. Maurice, to his credit drove out to us with some tools and oil to see what could be done. Eventually we were once again on our way to the fuel station.\n\nThe camper took an inordinate amount of fuel, considering that we were under the impression that it had only a 50 litre tank. The smell of fuel inspired us to get out, only to find that there was a massive pool of fuel underneath the camper, where it had somehow escaped. Nonetheless we chose to trudge on, disheartened. The fuel jockeys pushed the camper into starting and we were once again on our way. Thankfully the cab did not fill up with smoke again (but only because there simply wasn’t enough in there to come spilling out) and we crept onward slowly. We chose to go over the dam wall at the Hartebeespoort Dam to avoid the toll roads and plod, given that the license issue had not yet been resolved. The camper drew eyes on stalks at traffic intersections wherever we went. \n\nThese Autovillas are not all that common on the road any more. We are sure it was a sight to behold. Hawkers and gawkers abounded. One man was so impressed with the lumbering behemoth that he gifted us two black Stetson style hats, the same are now sitting in a newly built bookcase inside the camper. We began to feel lighter and brighter as we wound our way through the verdant hills onward. About 100km from the farm, something went drastically wrong.\n\nWe couldn’t get the camper into 3rd gear, it slipped, crunched and groaned. It is a manual gearbox, so a stick shift. Intersections became a game of careful timing to avoid needing to coming to a complete stop. We were in no way sure that we would get her started again should she stall. Eventually we managed to park her in a field next to mother’s house on the farm. \n\nIt turned out that there was a problem with one of the fuses under the driver’s side seat, she started again with the minimum in fuss and hassle once the fuse situation was remedied. Finding a replacement dipstick for the mangled one proved to be a fools errand. Derek attempted a repair with Pratley Steel. Everything seemed to be holding.       "title": "The Classic Camper-van",
      "body": "How did we get here?\n\nFollowing along from the last post, the “What do we do now?” question precipitated a discussion quite out of the blue about dreams Derek had been holding close to his chest about buying a Camper-van. A dream that had been shot down in flames by his then wife, a dream he had been thinking about sporadically since 1996. A dream that would take almost 27 years to become a reality. A dream he only admitted to having in 2022. We had been together at that point for about 6 years. The exact discussion has been lost to the annals of time and stroke damage, but the main idea remains. We were both wholeheartedly on board with the idea.\n\nSo we started looking for a suitable camper-van. Our budget was prohibitively small, given that Derek was working at the time at a little biker dive bar that ran and continues to run on mercy and goodwill alone. Georgina worked on a consultative basis for short term projects. Our budget was anaemic at best. Both of us prefer the more classic aged vehicles. The rationale being a) the cost of upkeep, b) being able to fix any issues out in the boonies without ending up severely stranded. Things break. Both of us are more or less au fait with how the internal combustion engine works and can read a repair manual without breaking out in hives. \n\nMonths of searching yielded 2 great options. The first was a large v6 powered VW Autovilla that had been gutted (all the bits and bobs for the interior at that point were apparently in storage somewhere), reskinned and rebuilt but not completed. It had space for a kitchen, bathroom, shower and reasonable space for sleeping and working. Problem? It smelled quite badly of rat droppings, the upholstery was in tatters, the aluminium skin was starting to pull apart, there were no roof vents, didn’t have a towing hitch installed and the floor had wood rot... The rebuild time would have sat in the 6 month range just to get it into a working condition, not to mention just how much we would need to spend to fix the rot. BUT it had one really big plus. It was fully licensed and that license was up to date. Side note, when we went to have a look at the camper, they couldn’t start it for us. So, we didn’t really know if there were mechanical issues with the engine or gearbox.\n\nThe second was in running condition, a little bit smaller (which frankly makes it easier to drive) and didn’t really have an indoor shower. The pictures looked reasonably good. Everything was in working order as far as we could see, aside from the truly dreadful 1980’s colour scheme. Biggest down side for this one? The license was behind... by a lot. Mother in Law came to visit and we hitched a ride back to Gauteng with her since the second Autovilla was in a completely different province. \n\nAnd then things st#arted going a bit awry, wrangling finances out of fresh air and then a hospitalisation and emergency surgery had our plans ground to a halt. Scheduling a visit to see the camper took more than 3 weeks, since one of us was in the hospital and the new owner of the camper was working weird hours. \n\nFinally we made it to a dust pan town in the middle of nowhere near Thabazimbi. As it stood there in the sweltering heat we were confronted with a choice. Take the 1982 VW Autovilla with the ford V6 conversion, as is. Or focus on the one closer to home. We took it for a short test(as it turned out too short) drive. Everything seemed to be working as it was supposed to. So we made the transfer to Maurice and the camper was ours. Our adventure had started, we were so very excited.       "body": "Hi! We are Derek and Georgina. We currently live in South Africa, a country on the southern-most tip of Africa, a country of large expanses, extra-ordinary natural beauty and friendly people of all walks of life. We are a Gen X and Millennial couple taking to the roads(sometimes terribly potholed roads) and through-fares of this extra-ordinary country. The plan? We don’t actually have one... Africa, simply beckons. \n\nYou are invited to join us on this journey where we intend to share the natural beauty, the people, the food, the culture and the issues... as well as our journey towards getting ready to hit the road. Here we intend to share the ups and downs. Teaching Derek, a Gen X man that didn’t grow up with technology in his palm, how to shoot and edit video footage from an iPhone, how to learn to use TikTok, Instagram and Youtube at the grand age of 53. \n\nA real, unvarnished look at Digital Nomacy, finding an ATM (and workarounds South Africans have developed for the dearth of such in more remote places), a place to find hopefully good food, internet options and changing a tyre on a vehicle a year older than Georgina in the middle of nowhere and working while on the move... also where exactly to stash a ring light where it will not expire. We expect there to be the fairly normal minutia of life, arguments, getting lost, cooking, enjoying a sunset with a glass of wine (or rum in Derek’s case) and trying to get a streaming service of some description to work out in the bush and boonies. Hopefully there will be laughter and some romance in the mix.\n\nSo, why are we doing this? Choosing to be entirely mobile and without a fixed domicile, dragging a dog and two motorcycles across the plains, mountains and basins of Africa? The landscape of life has changed significantly over the last few years. We’re looking at you 2020. Derek for his part has lived through quite a few nasty recessions(2008 and 2016 being the most detrimental), tanked dreams and hopes for the future, he even lived through a military coup in Guinea circa 2008? He has essentially aged out of the profession he has the most valuable experience in, 30 or 40 years ago the professional landscape didn’t really require millions of bits of paper and a degree with your name on it. So he learned on the job and expanded his knowledge that way. Those days are well and truly gone and competition is fierce with ever evolving progress dragging us all in its slip stream,  the world and its population is, after all expanding madly. Georgina essentially did the same thing 20 years ago, travelled, learned new cultures and people, picking up skills that were odd together in the greater scheme of things. She even collected a few disparate certifications and whatnot. And then... she got ill. The kind of ill that creates chronic heart failure and strokes, the kind of ill triggered by stress and working up to 15 hour days out in the world when others where locked down and not allowed to walk the streets without a permission slip from Cyril... In a time of plague and well... riots.. The doctor’s words: “Quit or die”. \n\nThese changes have required of us to look at various categories in our lives and thinking rather seriously about how we could make sustainable changes that would work for both of us AND respect our HUMANITY. A paradigm shift had to occur where we had to look at ourselves as something other than the automaton that late stage capitalism has inculcated us with. \n\nFollow along with us as we build Classic Dust. The Camper is a classic vehicle, Derek is probably considered vintage, Georgina still lands in the classic classification though, so he is sadly out numbered.
