For my first post I thought I’d share a story about a recent foodie event I had the pleasure of attending. Like any well crafted tale we first need a bit of exposition.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>About 4 years ago my friends and I started to find that life was becoming very busy. It was difficult to arrange meet ups that suited everyone as we were busy with work, commitments to wives and girlfriends, etc. So, we devised a cunning plan. We formed a supper club that meets up on the first Wednesday of every month. This gave us the opportunity to try out lots of restaurants in London and get drunk with permission from the aforementioned wives and girlfriends. &nbsp;Not long into this journey, my friend Tom turned up to a meal with an excitable grin on his face. He claimed to have tasted the best beef in the world… Ever!&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Now, Tom is a massive foodie and his opinion counts, so we told him contact the restaurant so that we could try it ourselves. Unfortunately, the beef he had eaten was a rare breed of cattle called <strong>White Park</strong>. The chef had bad news. They had no more of the beef and he wasn’t sure if they could get any more. We told him to get in touch with us if he got any more.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1ccbe50f.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"582\"/></p>\n<p>The magnificent Ancient White Park Cattle.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>At this point we completely forgot about it until a year later when the restaurant called Tom. They had found some of the beef. I still remember the first bite of this delicious beef that had been dry-aged for 60 days. It melted in the mouth. Taken in 2014.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>After such a glorious foodie moment I had mixed feelings. On the one hand I was incredibly grateful to try White Park. On the other hand I suspected that it might be a once in a lifetime experience as they are so rare. There are only 1500 breeding cows in the whole of the UK and probably about 2000 in the entire world.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Fast forward to a month ago and another friend in the supper club, Bob, explained that a gastro-pub near his work was organising a beef banquet with a 13 course menu and unlimited wine for £70 per person. This is a bargain in London so we signed up on the spot. The banquet was in the basement of <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/TheOrangeSW1/\">The Orange pub in Belgravia</a>. As I walked down the stairs I was greeted by a most unusual sight… Was a dreaming? Could it really be? &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Overlooking the banquet room was the beautiful mounted head of a White Park bull who we later found out was called Adonis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1eb3c634.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Once everyone was seated we were introduced to our host for the evening. A remarkable gentleman called <a href=\"https://twitter.com/LyonsHillfarm/with_replies?lang=en\">Mark Leatham </a>who reared the cattle on his farm. Mark told us his personal story. His parents were adventurous and he traveled the world as a boy tasting exotic food as he went. Then he became an army officer followed by sometime as a banker in the City of London. He wasn’t happy though. So, he started a company importing the European delicacies he tasted as a child into the UK. He has a massive passion for quality, organic food and this passion found its equal when he first saw White Park Cattle. He immediately decided to start a hobby farm and increase the breeding numbers in the UK.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Adonis was one of the first bulls to be born on his farm and Mark, recognising his beauty, named him after the Greek god… And then mounted his head as a reminder of how it all started. I guess it’s a farmer’s way of showing affection. Now, onto some food porn… &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1dbc61e4.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The candle in the picture above was made out of beef dripping - the fat from all the cooking. As the candle runs down it melts the dripping and then you mop it up with bread. It’s a traditional British starter that seems a bit odd if you’re not used to it. I think it’s delicious. You just have to make sure that you don’t eat too much as it is not good for you.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1f5d92da.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>There were then 7 small plates that were beautifully prepared by the chefs using different cuts of meat – shin, tendons, heart, tongue and cheek. The nose to tail philosophy is great as it ensures that nothing goes to waste. It also allowed the chefs to be inventive and push the boundaries during this part of the meal. I definitely experienced some flavors that were new to my palate - very exciting. The wild flowers you can see in the picture were picked from the same farm so we were eating exactly what the cows ate. Every single course was exceptional. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>In between courses Mark would share his passion about White Park Cattle and he went through its history. There are ancient Irish folk stories that mention these cows and the oldest written record of the breed is 55BC when Julius Caesar and the Romans invaded Britain. Let that sink in, this breed is older than Christianity. They were very special to the Celts and Druids (priests) who inhabited Britain at this time. The Druids thought the cows were divine and pure because of their white coat and they sacrificed them to the gods. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1d419411.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>We then moved onto an interpretation of fillet steak, eggs and chips. There was only one chip but it was cooked in the fat of the cow and was incredibly rich. The steak is seasoned with wild garlic that was picked on the farm. As you can see from all the pictures, there was an obscene amount of food anyway. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1d69cad7.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>In the middle ages the human population grew in Britain and the cattle were rounded up and moved into forests that were owned by the king. He couldn’t have any of the common folk feasting on his prize cows! They still roamed free and there are still two groups of White Park Cattle that are completely wild and roam the forest in North Wales and Northumbria. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1ee5ec33.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The main course was a beautiful sirloin of pink beef with seasonal greens. Delicious! We then finished the meal with chocolates and an apple and rye cake with pastrami ice cream. It sounds odd but there was only a mild pastrami taste, it tasted more like salted caramel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1d90aa89.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The final story about these wonderful cows brings us all the way up to World War 2. The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was so worried that the Nazi’s might bomb or kill all the White Park Cattle that he put a few of them on ships and sailed them across the Atlantic Ocean to Canada and the United States. Therefore, if you are across the pond from the UK you might be able to find the breed. They are commonly known as the <em><strong>Ancient White Park</strong></em> in order to distinguish them from the <em>American White Park</em>, which is a population of the <em>British White breed</em> (a completely different breed). &nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I think you can see from the pictures that it was an amazing banquet, especially for meat lovers. At the end of the meal we thanked Mark for his fascinating stories and his passion, we thanked the chefs who had created such a wonderful meal and finally we raised a glass and toasted Adonis and the cow that had made the ultimate sacrifice for our dining pleasure. Then we rolled out the door with full bellies and smiles on our faces. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I hope you have enjoyed the story and the pictures. The chefs are amazing and they serve great seasonal food that is ethically sourced from suppliers like Mark. It really makes a difference to the quality of life of the animals and this ultimately makes the meat more delicious. The meal is that much more enjoyable knowing that the cows are free, happy and long-lived as you can see below.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d1f0a60a5.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"683\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>They don’t always have White Park Cattle on the menu as it is a rare breed so if you want to try this special beef I would phone the <a href=\"http://thethomascubitt.co.uk/\">Thomas Cubbitt pub group</a> and they will let you know when it is on the menu. I really think this is a box that must be ticked for carnivores. The marbling on White Park is fantastic and it has a really unique taste. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To quote the late, great food critic A.A Gill:&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>\"The White Park, a breed I've never eaten before and I had always assumed was purely ornamental, was really excellent: soft, chewy, with that strong, distinctive, almost corrupt flavor of proper beef, like eating an old roué uncle. If you've only had supermarket meat - or don't have uncles - it may come as a shock, but it was the best steak I've had this year.\"</em></p>\n<p><em><br>\n</em>I will return with more dining recommendations for London. It’ll be shorter next time as this was a whole banquet with a lot of story.
