titleScared of the Deep Web? Don't be!
bodyThe Deep Web is perceived to be a scary place. You got your fair share of live streamed murder, you can buy mystery boxes from serial killers and it is overloaded with Child Pornography. While the Deep Web certainly offers quite a bit of questionable stuff, things were blown out of proportion. YouTubers who do not have a good grasp on the topic, tend to fearmonger their audiences and exaggerate events for more views on their videos. While this is a good business practice for them, it does damage the reputation of the Deep Web and its users. **This article is a written and more in depth version of this YouTube video I created yesterday** Now let us see what most people believe about the Deep Web...
1. It is illegal to access the Deep Web/ Dark Net
**Wrong.** It is perfectly legal to enter the Deep Web and/ or Dark Web with the Tor service or any other browser. Any site that is not indexed is considered to be a part of the Deep Web, that would include account configuration pages, your Amazon shopping cart and your secret non listed YouTube videos!
2. Only criminals use the Deep Web
While many criminals do roam the Deep Web for forums and interesting websites for them, I can assure you **a lot of people that browse the Deep Web, if not more, are perfectly normal**. If you know what you are looking for, you can find really interesting websites, personal blogs, maybe even an active social media site!
3. You stumble across bad sites on every turn
**Absolutely false.** To access links in the Tor browser, you need to know some list sites. These list sites categorize and sometimes even curate links and check if they are active or not. You do not want to stumble across child pornography? Then do not search for it in the respective categories. Many users that open up Tor for the first time, try to find the worst stuff first, because they want to validate their fears. Again, keep this in mind: You will most likely not stumble across bad sites every 2 minutes, when you don't seek them out in the first place.
4. Hackers and Killers want to harm me!
Do not worry, noone will come knocking on your door because you opened an albanian hackers personal blog... hopefully. In all seriousness, this is not what you should be worrying about when using Tor. **Your computer is at risk here, not you.** Before browsing, make sure to set up a Virtual Machine that emulates a Linux system, or get a dedicated system/ flash drive with a Linux distribution installed (which is undoubtably the better solution). You need to be secured by a VPN software to mask your location, and you should have an Anti Virus software ready. **Do not enable JavaScript on the Deep Web. Only enable when you trust the site and make sure to not maximize the Tor browser.**
5. Killers post their horrible murders on the Deep Web!
Sure, they tend to do that, but this happens much more frequently on the freely accessible internet. Pictures and videos of dead and dying people are frequently uploaded to YouTube, LiveLeak, diverse chan sites and dedicated gore sites I am not going to mention. The normal internet simply is a much better source for macabre content... *you just have to know where to look.*
6. I will be prosecuted when I enter a site with illegal contents!
No, do not worry, you are completely fine. Entering a site with illegal contents can happen from time to time. Just remember to not visit the site multiple times again. That is when a suspicious pattern arises. **Also, when you made sure to go through some security measures I listed above, you really have no reason to worry about anything.**
I hope I could clear up some fears you may have had about the Deep Web
It really just depends how you use the Deep Web and what you make out of it. I search for the informative and ridiculous side of the web, including sites like: - Social Media sites - Personal Blogs - Useful tutorial sites Do not make some entertainers influence you to the point of fearing something, because maybe this thing is not as bad as you may think. Before I wrap up this post here, I want to give you some tips for safer onion link browsing: - Do not trust anyone - Do not open sites that are obviously illegal - Do not download anything, and if you do, only open the downloaded file when not connected to the internet - Do not buy anything on the Deep Web - Do not use any Windows machine to browse Tor Thank you for reading this article. titleDigital Art Blog #1 Rheinhardt
bodyI am trying to get back into digital drawing and painting lately, so I decided to paint a portrait. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVHsox7sisDYXH2kC4Hx8PDhByWg3Vm6FRhMNrsEVVajF/grafik.png) I have a rather standart process I'd say. First, I sketch out the general shape of the figure. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZt4P8RGDqj3wAP8AZQkMxuZefKtesfjNUPqbz5fvZieU/grafik.png) Then I roughly block in the colours, shadows and highlights. ![rheinprog2.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQma2zbwdMUjJDFqRoMHCDibpdmRSiJTRZ1QUBcF1DCosJ8/rheinprog2.png) And then, I just detail as much as I want until I am satisfied. ![rheinprog3.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWzH7ysn7koVBVnouggRrHEFNjmcoAyR9KUzZb2zHvqG3/rheinprog3.png) ![rheinprog4.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaBVAEepAFjSuwF9xRDhgYqzjwDwk8fadrXkLZ2bQd1Z9/rheinprog4.png) ![Rheinhardt 2.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbXi6DDn97JFJvErThEN3T18pWRH4dLiCRKu7t59VMPqX/Rheinhardt%202.PNG) I am very pleased about how this painting turned out, even after a rather long hiatus. I tried to apply rim lighting, ambient occlusion and a mix of hard and soft lights and shadows. I notice some things I can improve on though, especially when it comes to the clothing. Maybe I should study more clothes and textures... Thank you for reading! titleMount and Blade Warband: A Sandbox Blueprint
bodyThere aren't many games out there that let the player completely loose and give the player complete freedom of what they can and cannot do. Many games in the open world genre may be mistaken for being ultimate sandbox experiences, like Grand Theft Auto games. While you can roam around the city, complete side activities and initiate any sort of violent action, the games missions maybe are some of the most restricted and linear that can come to mind. The type of sandbox I am writing about now, is one that does not restrict the player in any way, wether said restriction is a story or the gamedesign itself and the sandbox elements are present throughout the game in itself. There are many great games that follow this specific formula. Some honourable mentions would be Minecraft, the Arma games and, the game this article is all about, Mount and Blade Warband.
Gameplay Mechanics
Mount and Blade is a very unique game gameplaywise. It combines elements from many different genres, for instance RPG mechanics, real time strategy and first and third person combat. Warband features many simulations during combat and in the political structure of the game. Those simulations act like the rules of the game, you can't do things that fall outside of the simulation, but you can do anything the simulation allows. Warband simulates wars, politics, even economics and you can use and abuse those simulations as much as you want.
Vassal, merchant or rather revolutionary?
How you play and behave in the gameworld of Mount and Blade Warband, is completely up to you. We established before that Warband is a game that functions and was built ontop of simulations and now I want to detail how diverse the gameplay of Mount and Blade actually is. We have many different options on how we can play the game. I divided the game into three main portions: - Combat - Economics - and Politics You can focus entirely on some aspects of the game and completely disregard the others, but keep in mind that you can play this game while dealing with every portion this game offers. Let us say that we want to create a character that is focussed in economics. So how can we earn money now? There are many ways, the most peaceful would be obtaining and selling resources. You can inform yourself in cities how much certain resources cost and how wealthy the town is in comparison to the other cities. With this information you can travel to the towns that sell a certain resource for a cheap price and then you can travel to another city, to sell the resources for a higher price to generate profit. Trading is a viable way to make money in the game, but it can get rather tedious, so let us take a look at enterprises! In any city you can buy properties to generate weekly income. These properties are very useful for funding your army and help you to get the equipment you need for your adventures. Depending on the economic and political state of the gameworld, some resources may be worth less than others, in turn, your properties might become more or less valuable over time too. *So trading and enterprises are good and all, but maybe you fancy a more action oriented and inhumane source of income?* What I am hinting at: You can earn a lot of money with plundering villages and human trafficking. You can imprison people that you or your men knocked out on the battlefield and you can sell these people to ransom brokers all around the map. Depending on the ranks and importance of the units, you get more or less money for their ransom. If you dare to fight a vassal of another kingdom, you can keep the vassal hostage until the kingdom offers money to you for freeing the imprisoned vassal. Meanwhile plundering villages is (in a way) a much more risky task. You demand peasants to give you their cattle and resources, or you can plunder and destroy their village and get all the valuable resources to make a significant fortune. But look out! Nearby vassals will not appreciate that you destroy their villages and terrorise their people! I hope this chapter gave you a little taste of how multifasceted this game actually is. The combat and politics oriented playstyles also feature many different ways to be played, but let us move on for now. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdNigPAVgSuCHrdWZabS8qxSY7forTtp388HGQaqKDqw6/grafik.png)
The unending powerstruggle
I mentioned before that Warband has certain limitations regarding its simulations. Those limitations form a certain dynamic in the world that keeps the game going. Some of these limitations are: **Important NPCs cannot die** Any NPC that is important, like a unique companion you can hire, a vassal or yourself, is immortal. If theoretically every unique NPC was killed by your sword and by other armies, the simulation would slowly fall apart and the game would lose its dynamic. Because NPCs cannot die, a constant powerstruggle between the factions arises. Wars are declared, vassals are kidnapped, peace treaties are signed and you can choose to be part of this dynamic. **Reputation** Your reputation and popularity can enable and also disable your plans. You cannot buy any properties and form enterprises in towns that dislike you for attacking them for example. Your reputation is also influenced by war and peaceful times. **Skills and levels** You need to level up your character to be able to use certain items, or to finish certain tasks in a way more effective manner. Those limitations in Warbands simulations are what make the game enjoyable and particularly fun to play. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRGmaiuH2HijGVY4fFYNt6eEjiM7RK29PMHxkfGetRA4E/grafik.png)
Conclusion
Mount and Blade Warband is a game that combines many gameplay ideas and mechanics, from many different genres. Even though Warband borrowed so much from other games, it manages to differentiate itself, due to how it uses these mechanics to create a ultimate sandbox experience. The game allows you to play in any way you want and rewards and punishes you according to your gameplay style, but because you and every other unique NPC is immortal, you can always rebuild your army, even when you lost everything and everyone. Mount and Blade Warband was built ontop of many simulations that constantly run in the background. You can use and abuse these simulations as much as you want, as much as a simulation allows you to. The simulations create the games rules and those game rules create a neverending dynamic in the gameworld, that keeps every faction, economy and barbarian in motion. *Tell me what you think about Mount and Blade Warband and if you would consider it a good example for a sandbox experience yourself. If you found this post interesting, consider following my account!* *Did the game I talked about interest you? Consider supporting the developers and buy the game yourself! titleObsolete Media: A Look at a Hi8 Camcorder
body *My videoreview on the Sony Handycam.* Lately I found interest in watching and collecting movies on VHS, so I explored our apartment and found a working high quality VCR player, with quite a few cassettes and another little curiosity that really intrigued me... a 20 year old Sony Handycam. So I dug it out, charged it a bit and turned it on to try it out and after quite a bit of testing, I can safely say that this camcorder should not be underestimated. ![Camcorder.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQz6UiRkzA74P12w9CpMB2RwebwSDba1nBUeANvVVXhQa/Camcorder.jpg) *The camcorder in question, a CCD - R713E PAL.*
The Features
This Sony Handycam can shoot on Hi8 cassettes, an improved version of the video8 cassette, and it has quite a few neat features. For one, you can hook up your camera to an AV converter and directly record the live video to your PC, no cassette required, but there are many more features this particular camera has.
The InfoLithium battery
The Sony Handycam models use InfoLithium batteries, which show you **exactly** how much batterylife is left for the camcorder. When you charge the camera, you can see an icon appear on the little display on the side of the camera, that indicates that the battery is charging. Next to this icon you can read how many minutes this camera lasts in standby mode (in my case its 1500 - 1700 minutes). When in use, you can see for how many minutes the camera can be used when you look into the viewfinder on the top left (in my case the time ranges from 600 - 800 minutes). This system is very accurate and very convenient and I wonder why not more modern devices can do this.
The Zoom is ridiculous
During testing two days ago at night, we zoomed all the way into the full moon, to see how the 330x digital zoom performs, and we were really suprised. When zoomed in, you can make out quite a few details, you can see the craters and with a manually adjusted exposure setting, the moon isnt even too bright. The zoom isn't only good for recording the moon though. Overall, when you zoom into something, the picture doesn't distort too much and the recording looks very good in motion. ![moon.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdrhctp1Xb89hD2ydAb3RRoXt2yWTv6isXWAmLrhNruBo/moon.PNG) *The zooming capabilities of this camera are impressive for its age.*
Shooting in low light
This camcorder is equipped with a flashlight and a so called ''Night Shot'' mode. Those two tools are very good for making dark shots visible, for one you can turn on the flashlight, or set it on automatic, so the flashlight switches on when you need light on its own. The ''Night Shot'' mode utilizes an infrared spotlight that is already integrated into the camera. With this mode you can see quite a bit of stuff at night in short to medium distance and you can even see people and structures that are more distant to the camcorder. The infrared feature is not present on most cameras today, even camcorders, most likely due to one reason. There was a controversy over a decade ago about ''X-Ray cameras''. The problem is the following: An infrared camera with adjusted exposure settings, **can see through clothing to a certain extent.** This is why all infrared equipped cameras after the controversy happened, can only adjust the exposure automatically in Night Shot mode. ![low light.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSGxufWH1bBxQ8UNxhW22teJoALiyZyg6dStMdtuXiLmH/low%20light.PNG) *From a test video seeing how the camera performs in Night Shot mode.* *On a side note: please use the Night Shot mode how its intended to be used. Don't be a creep, its illegal.*
Camera but also... cassette player?!?
Remember that you can connect this camcorder to your PC? This is not the only device you can hook it up on. As long as you can convert the analog signal into a digital one, or the monitor you hook it up to supports composite video, you can watch your cassettes on the big screen, even with sound. Analog camcorders had a fully integrated player built into them. The standard VCR player controls are present, you can start, pause and stop, fast forward and backward. Since you can power the camcorder only by hooking it up to the power supply, it can be used as a rather capable video8 player. What makes this even better, is that you can use the cassette player with a remote control that was shipped with the camcorder. ![fly.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaJuKjSBBKUeoRMxJXV9jz1yaWNWFHcJYfKLGMbEtr9yG/fly.png)
Drawbacks
I am really impressed with this camcorder and invested quite a bit of money into it so I can use it again, but there are a few drawbacks that I want to adress. For one, the viewfinder is completely in black and white. This camcorder was released in the early days of digital viewfinders, so it only supports a black and white image. Later camcorders gradually integrated viewfinders that support color. What can also complicate things, is that there is no flip out display. This is bad due to two reasons: For one, you constantly have to look into the viewfinder to see what you are recording, and second, you cannot adjust the brightness of the viewfinder anywhere (at least I didn't find an option that allows that). It is very tiring to use the viewfinder of this device since its so bright. The following is not an issue with the device in itself, but rather with the format: The cassettes can be really expensive. Overall I had quite a hard time to find two cassettes in my online searches. Many video8 and Hi8 cassettes sell for ridiculous prices that I was not willing to spend money for. My tip is: Always stay patient and keep looking for good deals when buying obsolete media devices and dataformats. Someone, somewhere wants to get rid of old stuff they don't care about. Also, ask your local Hi Fi shop if they sell cassettes and wether suppliers still have something in stock. You might get really good deals and simoltaneously support your local economy! ![unknown.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPtytCqpLskUfPCDJx4etENprXWzmk8BzhKDcHFKuLRJR/unknown.png)
Conclusion
**Is it worth it to buy a vintage Hi8 camcorder today?** Yes... but not to the average camera user. This format has a very special aesthetic to it and mostly the people that grew up with VHS and other old tape formats will really appreciate the look this tape can provide. You have to keep some important things in mind though: 1. Buying, using and especially recording on obsolete media can be very expensive 2. Do not expect amazing sound and visuals 3. You most likely will face some inconveniances From my own experience I can safely say that this camera is perfect for people that like to shoot video fast and effectively, with a retro look and feel. The camcorder was designed in a way that makes it possible to use it with only one hand in automatic mode. The camera is very powerful in low and no light scenarios and the reusable cassettes enable you to shoot many videos on just one cassette. **If you have a love for obsolete media or tapes specifically and want to shoot videos that are stylistically very distinct and different, by all means, try out a Hi8 camcorder!**

titleCognitive Flow: Why it's important
bodyIt happens too many times. I turn on my computer and want to play a game I really like, for example Doom 2 or Half Life and suddenly quite a bit of time has passed. The worst case was when I first played Sid Meiers Civilisation V: I started the game, played a bit to learn the ropes and as I got hungry and went to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich, it was already past midnight. I played this game for over 6 hours non stop that day. What this means, besides me most likely having an addiction, is that this game has good **cognitive flow**. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYUvyQLCmvgaBF38GhPnG5AxM7q9cpykprMjFoCsBAfyn/image.png)
Cognitive Flow: What is it?
Before I share my opinions on how to achieve cognitive flow in videogames, I want to give you a short description of what flow actually means. Flow is part of positive psychology and it is the state of extreme focus and immersion into one specific task or activity. Flow isn't only achievable in games, but also in writing, music production, drawing, any activity that you enjoy, can get you in a state of extreme immersion and focus. I think all of you can relate to this feeling of experiencing flow, but you may not know what causes it in a videogame.
How Flow can be achieved in Games
Games can achieve flow in many ways, suprisingly though, it doesn't only come down to well coded and fun gameplay mechanics. As it is the case for many aspects of gamedesign, flow cannot be achieved with good game mechanics on their own most of the times. **The things that impact flow in a game are the following:** - Map Design - Health and Ammo Placement - Cutscenes - Variation in Gameplay - Game Mechanics - The Learning Curve *Of course there are way more aspects in a game that can impact the flow* I will explore every single one of those aspects in the game Half Life 2, which is one of the best examples for immersive gameplay.
Map Design
In a linear, story driven shooter like Half Life 2, map design is one of the most important aspects for creating flow. The Half Life series is known for creating immersive maps which give the player a sense of progression and adventure when navigating them. When you approach the end of a map, the game loads and then lets you progress onward. So the player can traverse City 17 and surrounding areas more easily without it getting boring. The areas were downsized quite a bit, and built in a way that the player can navigate them easily. Especially lighting and NPCs can aid the player in traversing a map easily. ![20180307233731_1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZHVLmXNvVoWr7t9Gur1sFXFinCQSyM69LbsL4znVPVs8/20180307233731_1.jpg)
Health and Ammo Placement
You don't want your game too be too hard to complete, or too easy to even bother playing! Half Life 2 always made sure to give you anything you needed the most in the form of supply crates in addition to handplaced items and charging stations. Charging stations occur rather often inbetween fights and infinite ammo boxes are mostly present before and during fights, while the supply crates and miscellanious items were handplaced in the map. The supply crates work like this: The game sees that you dont have that much health and revolver ammo, so some supply crates give you more medkits and revolver rounds. While this system makes it easy for the developers to balance the game, it is an easy solution when compared to carefully balancing maps. As a result, quite a few players find Half Life 2 a little too easy, even on the hardest difficulty setting.
Cutscenes
In some games they are nescessary, but it is still better to have less of them. Cutscenes can destroy flow in an instant. Half Life 2 does not have cutscenes, but it does drag on a bit due to exposition scenes. The gameplay is never interrupted, but some scenes, especially in the beginning, drag on for quite a while and only feature people talking to each other. On the first few playthroughs this might not be a problem, but on repeated playthroughs those scenes can be a chore to play through. A more extreme example for this game design flaw, would be Max Payne 3. This game has excellent shooting mechanics, features a satisfying degree of violence and used the Euphoria engine to its fullest potential, but it is not enjoyable to replay. Cutscenes interrupt the game constantly, some can be skipped, but others are disguised loading times that are unskippable and this can make a game really frustrating to play, even on a first time playthrough.
Variation in Gameplay
While you don't need variation in the gameplay to achieve flow, Half Life 2 used this technique heavily and successfully. The game always gives the player different things to do to mix things up. There are combat sections, puzzles to complete, driving sections and also combat sections that focus on the use of one particular mechanic. Some of the most memorable moments of Half Life 2, include the Ravenholm section, which you can play entirely while only using the gravity gun, then exploring the highway with your buggy and also the super gravity gun nearing the end of the game, which can even throw larger objects than normally possible and enemies. Variation can keep the player engaged, but the core mechanics and design principles of the game, should always be present.
Game Mechanics
Game Mechanics should always be designed nicely and utilized throughout the game. For Half Life 2 those include the rather average shooting mechanics, the use of physics in puzzles and combat and the squad mechanic. While the use of physics is pulled off excellently in Half Life, the combat lacks a bit, but the variety in gameplay, definately makes up for this flaw. What also aids the flow, is how game mechanics are introduced. In Half Life 2, there is no training room tutorial like in its predescessor, but it teaches you how to play the game while playing the game. It rarely transitions into a standard tutorial mission and mostly just briefly displays a little text prompt telling you what to press to perform the action you want to do. So instead of a radio transmission telling you how to pick something up, a metro cop orders you to pick up that can. ![20180307233752_1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUPpN5pUi6nCkJSVnhDznJYbveLt5XCthLf8PDvFxeFb1/20180307233752_1.jpg)
The Learning Curve
Every game has a learning curve, especially multiplayer games. Games can be extremely difficult by design, or really simple. Some games are easy to get into, but hard to master, others are easy overall and thus this maybe is the most subjective category in my list. In Half Life 2 the core gameplay mechanics are really simple and the combat is very barebones at parts. So to showcase how the Learning Curve can aid flow, I will use Team Fortress 2 as an example here. In Team Fortress 2 you have nine different classes at your disposal that you can play at any time. Each one of those classes has a specific purpose, and the first step to mastering Team Fortress 2, is to learn when and how to use a certain class. Then the player might find out that you can redirect projectiles with the airblast ability and others even use rocketjumping to increase their mobility and speed on the map. There is always a technique or mechanic that you can perfect or learn in Team Fortress 2 and this in turn can be very addicting.
Summary
To create a game that can get players invested and focused for hours, you need to consider many different aspects of game design. The maps need to have a good progression, the game mechanics should be solid, variation can help a lot to preserve immersion and a well made learning curve, can extend the playtime of online games tremendously. Flow is important, it keeps us invested and entertained, not just in games, but also in more productive activities, like writing, drawing or producing videos. All those aspects and presumably many more combined, can make a game very addicting and enjoyable to play. Games I get completely immersed in include: - Dishonored - Half Life 1/ 2 - Doom 1/ 2 - Mount and Blade Warband - Sid Meiers Civilisation V ...and of course some more! **Tell me which games you always get immersed in. "body": "It happens too many times. I played this game for over 6 hours non stop that day.\n\nWhat this means, besides me most likely having an addiction, is that this game has good **cognitive flow**.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYUvyQLCmvgaBF38GhPnG5AxM7q9cpykprMjFoCsBAfyn/image.png)\n\n\n
Cognitive Flow: What is it?
\n\nBefore I share my opinions on how to achieve cognitive flow in videogames, I want to give you a short description of what flow actually means. \nFlow is part of positive psychology and it is the state of extreme focus and immersion into one specific task or activity. Flow isn't only achievable in games, but also in writing, music production, drawing, any activity that you enjoy, can get you in a state of extreme immersion and focus. \n\nI think all of you can relate to this feeling of experiencing flow, but you may not know what causes it in a videogame.\n\n
How Flow can be achieved in Games
\n\nGames can achieve flow in many ways, suprisingly though, it doesn't only come down to well coded and fun gameplay mechanics. As it is the case for many aspects of gamedesign, flow cannot be achieved with good game mechanics on their own most of the times. \n\n**The things that impact flow in a game are the following:**\n\n- Map Design\n- Health and Ammo Placement\n- Cutscenes\n- Variation in Gameplay\n- Game Mechanics\n- The Learning Curve\n\n*Of course there are way more aspects in a game that can impact the flow*\n\nI will explore every single one of those aspects in the game Half Life 2, which is one of the best examples for immersive gameplay.\n\n
Map Design
\n\nIn a linear, story driven shooter like Half Life 2, map design is one of the most important aspects for creating flow. The Half Life series is known for creating immersive maps which give the player a sense of progression and adventure when navigating them. When you approach the end of a map, the game loads and then lets you progress onward. \n\nSo the player can traverse City 17 and surrounding areas more easily without it getting boring. The areas were downsized quite a bit, and built in a way that the player can navigate them easily. Especially lighting and NPCs can aid the player in traversing a map easily.\n\n\n![20180307233731_1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZHVLmXNvVoWr7t9Gur1sFXFinCQSyM69LbsL4znVPVs8/20180307233731_1.jpg)\n\n
Health and Ammo Placement
\n\nYou don't want your game too be too hard to complete, or too easy to even bother playing! Half Life 2 always made sure to give you anything you needed the most in the form of supply crates in addition to handplaced items and charging stations. \n\nCharging stations occur rather often inbetween fights and infinite ammo boxes are mostly present before and during fights, while the supply crates and miscellanious items were handplaced in the map. \n\n
Cutscenes
\n\nIn some games they are nescessary, but it is still better to have less of them. Cutscenes can destroy flow in an instant. Half Life 2 does not have cutscenes, but it does drag on a bit due to exposition scenes. The gameplay is never interrupted, but some scenes, especially in the beginning, drag on for quite a while and only feature people talking to each other. On the first few playthroughs this might not be a problem, but on repeated playthroughs those scenes can be a chore to play through.\n\nA more extreme example for this game design flaw, would be Max Payne 3. This game has excellent shooting mechanics, features a satisfying degree of violence and used the Euphoria engine to its fullest potential, but it is not enjoyable to replay. Cutscenes interrupt the game constantly, some can be skipped, but others are disguised loading times that are unskippable and this can make a game really frustrating to play, even on a first time playthrough.\n\n
Variation in Gameplay
\n\nWhile you don't need variation in the gameplay to achieve flow, Half Life 2 used this technique heavily and successfully. The game always gives the player different things to do to mix things up. There are combat sections, puzzles to complete, driving sections and also combat sections that focus on the use of one particular mechanic. \n\nSome of the most memorable moments of Half Life 2, include the Ravenholm section, which you can play entirely while only using the gravity gun, then exploring the highway with your buggy and also the super gravity gun nearing the end of the game, which can even throw larger objects than normally possible and enemies. \n\nVariation can keep the player engaged, but the core mechanics and design principles of the game, should always be present.\n\n
Game Mechanics
\n\nGame Mechanics should always be designed nicely and utilized throughout the game. For Half Life 2 those include the rather average shooting mechanics, the use of physics in puzzles and combat and the squad mechanic. While the use of physics is pulled off excellently in Half Life, the combat lacks a bit, but the variety in gameplay, definately makes up for this flaw.\n\nWhat also aids the flow, is how game mechanics are introduced. In Half Life 2, there is no training room tutorial like in its predescessor, but it teaches you how to play the game while playing the game. It rarely transitions into a standard tutorial mission and mostly just briefly displays a little text prompt telling you what to press to perform the action you want to do. So instead of a radio transmission telling you how to pick something up, a metro cop orders you to pick up that can.\n\n\n![20180307233752_1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUPpN5pUi6nCkJSVnhDznJYbveLt5XCthLf8PDvFxeFb1/20180307233752_1.jpg)\n\n
The Learning Curve
\n\nEvery game has a learning curve, especially multiplayer games.
