| body | How to Use Sports Science to Become a Professional Eater: Every Fourth of July on ESPN we as Americans get to celebrate the anniversary of our independence from the British Empire by watching our countrymen eat as many hot dogs as they can possibly stomach within 10 minutes in the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Some culture, huh? After the contest is over, a pretty common routine ensues across many households all over the United States seemingly as if they were all performed by the same brain: 1.The self described “big eater” in the household says: “I bet I can do that, maybe I can’t eat 74 hot dogs like Joey Chestnut, but I bet I could be on that stage competing.” 2. Returning from the grocery store with numerous packs of hot dogs and buns, enamored by the sheer size of all of that food volume, a flicker of doubt begins to rush over the mind of the motivated mandible. 3. Kicking doubt to the wall, the upstart esophagus pushes doubt into the wind, as they begin plowing through their plate of food, the only thing standing between them and the now crystal clear dream of finally becoming a professional athlete. 4. First hot dog goes down, definitely harder than you thought. The second hot dog goes down with indigestion to complement, as the stomach and esophagus ache from both the volume of the hot dogs and buns and the speed at which you eat them. Once it is time for the third dog, the mandible aches and you are gasping for air. (Gasping for air, from eating hot dogs!) Screw this, eating hot dogs is stupid. This vicious cycle is sadly all too real, and leaves the once eager candidate embittered and defeated. The feeling of having a euphoric dream approach so quickly and yet be ripped away so quickly by your own lack of skill and volition weaponizes a side of inadequacy reserved only for disappointing your father in Little League baseball. The beauty of all this of course is, you weren’t wrong at all, you totally can become a professional eater. Most people’s failure in becoming a professional eater doesn’t lie in some sort of genetic limitation, like it one preventing an average Joe from joining the NBA or NFL. Most people fail at becoming a professional eater because they fail to realize that the skills necessary are fully trainable, and even if they knew the skills were trainable, they would have no idea how they could be trained. This is where sports science comes in. Training professional eaters is actually very much quite like training athletes of any other sport, in fact it’s actually easier. But we’ll get to why a little later on. To develop a training strategy we will start by asking a few key questions: 1. What is our game model? 2. What skills do we need and how can we prioritize them? 3. What actions will we take to improve the necessary skills over time? These questions are the foundation of our end goal, which is development of the highest caliber professional eater. Game Model Here Dr. Fergus Connolly simplifies the definition of Game Model in his book Game Changer: The Art of Sports Science: “What is the game? How is it played? How should it be assessed?” The sport of professional eating is rather easy to assess. An individual is eating as many items, in this case we’ll say hot dogs, as they can physically ingest and hold down, in a short time, we can say 10 minutes. (Using the format of Nathan’s Famous.) The competition is assessed in strictly numerical fashion, meaning participants never come into contact with each other, and have no physical bearing on the external stimuli of their opponent. This eliminates all need for development of team tactics and chemistry, and allows the focus instead to shift inward to developing individual factors. Let’s take that and simplify it even more: What is it, how much can you eat, and how fast can you eat it? And just like that, you’ve developed the model for skill development of professional eaters. Easy right? Finding and Prioritizing Skills As we defined in our game model above, the contest relies on how much you can eat, and how fast you can eat. From there it is our job to break down skills and limitations that are to be improved upon in order to improve performance. Anthropomorphic Factors: Stomach Capacity At the heart of all of this the game model holds the foundational principle: How much can you really eat? For any lay person trying to compete in a professional eating contest they will realize their first obstacle to competition is that they simply do not have the space in their stomach to eat the necessary amount of food to be competitive. This however, is not an even remotely limiting factor for any aspiring professional eater as over time the elasticity of the stomach can be improved upon and can be increased drastically with concentrated training. Many don’t see the beauty in this. As I hinted at previously, training competitive eaters is far easier as compared to any other sport. This is because, unlike Major League Baseball or Olympic Sprinting, the foundational skill of professional eating is fully trainable and is the overwhelming majority of performance. So how do we train it? Simple, water. The best way to start stretching out your stomach by drinking as much of a gallon of water as you can hold down at least once every day until your stomach can hold the entire gallon at once. Once you can hold that gallon of water in, that’s 8 pounds your stomach can stretch to fit, that by itself is enough to make you competitive, for reference, the spam world record is only 6 pounds, so that’s a good place to start. Once you have a stomach big enough to support competitive amounts of food, it’s then time to focus on the next most important characteristics, jaw strength and breathing efficiency. Physical Factors: Jaw Strength and Aerobic Capacity/Breathing Efficiency After developing a professional grade capacity to ingest food, we focus on the physical factors in order to both increase the speed at which we can eat, but also to maintain the speed for the duration of the contest. This gives us our next steps, jaw strength and aerobic capacity. Because during an eating contest the athlete will be eating at their highest potential volume, they will therefore also be chewing at their highest volume but also speed, which without a strong jaw, will lead to a very quick fatigue and decline in performance. Therefore, it is imperative that the jaw be strong enough to quickly prepare the food to be swallowed without exerting high degrees of effort. The stronger the jaw, the faster the athlete can eat and swallow hot dogs and the longer they can maintain their performance. So how does one train the jaw? There’s actually a few ways. Chewing a high volume of gum is a very good place to start. Chewing gum for a long period of time allows an athlete to put in a high number chews eliciting a similar training effect to the number of times an athlete chews during a contest. Isometric exercises also have a similar effect. Holding your jaw clenched for a minute and repeating this a few times a day will over time allow for a stronger bite which will make it easier for your incisors to cut through pieces of food. Professional eater Yasir Salem recommends chewing on silicone tubes provided to those recovering from jaw surgery. Breathing efficiency the other side of the coin to maximizing performance. Because there is a very small window for an athlete to be able to breathe through their mouth, if they are not able to efficiently breathe through their nose for the duration of the contest, they will either asphyxiate themselves quickly and fatigue, or they will have to slow down their pace to compensate for the lack of air. A baseline aerobic capacity is needed to start. For example, Joey Chestnut runs 10 miles every week to maintain a strong base that he can count on during his contests. This is a very good start, but can be even better if you take it a step forward. Because you are not able to breathe through your mouth when you eat, you must master nose breathing in order to truly be able to maximize the aerobic factor in high performance eating. This is where Laird Hamilton comes in. Laird is a world champion surfer renowned for his ability to maintain world caliber physical condition at the age of 54. He is also a huge proponent of nose breathing. He says: “Deep nose breathing brings breath deep into your diaphragm- the muscle that separates your lungs from your stomach. You can actually feel your diaphragm expand when you nose breathe. This causes your abdomen to expand, causing a downward pressure on your stomach that forces air into your lungs and increases blood flow to and from your heart.” Athletes seeking to improve this feature of their physicality should spend time each day using the Wim Hof Method of controlled hyperventilation, which is shown to increase heart rate efficiency and breathing efficiency. By combining the two physical characteristics of jaw strength and breathing efficiency, athletes can eat faster, and eat longer, allowing to better approach achieving their maximum food capacity. The Last Frontier: Minimal Body Fat The last characteristic of maximizing high caliber eating is one that is particularly counter intuitive, minimizing body fat. Although it is a general stereotype that professional eaters tend to morbidly obese slobs who love to eat, (and some are i.e., Eric “Badlands” Booker), they actually tend to be skinny, or body builders. The professional eater tends to be a person with minimal fat on their body because any layer of fat will press inwardly and constrict the stomach, it also causes a greater degree of surface area for which blood has to travel, causing higher degrees of fatigue to the cardiovascular system. This can be achieved by just about any means of which one would lose fat, whether sauna, weight lifting, running, etc. but bottom line is, the more the better, and will be that final edge that helps you win your competition How do we develop these skills over time? We have already defined the skills that need to be improved, the key then is to develop a program, one that will be stuck to. Making time for breathing, and water consumption, and jaw strengthening is something that must become routine as any pro athlete would train regularly. Over time, with practice you too will be able to ascend the ranks of professional eating, and finally live your childhood dream of becoming a professional athlete. From there it is our job to break down skills and limitations that are to be improved upon in order to improve performance.\n\n\nAnthropomorphic Factors: Stomach Capacity\n\nAt the heart of all of this the game model holds the foundational principle: How much can you really eat? \n\nSo how do we train it? Simple, water. The best way to start stretching out your stomach by drinking as much of a gallon of water as you can hold down at least once every day until your stomach can hold the entire gallon at once. Once you can hold that gallon of water in, that’s 8 pounds your stomach can stretch to fit, that by itself is enough to make you competitive, for reference, the spam world record is only 6 pounds, so that’s a good place to start. Once you have a stomach big enough to support competitive amounts of food, it’s then time to focus on the next most important characteristics, jaw strength and breathing efficiency.\n\n\nPhysical Factors: Jaw Strength and Aerobic Capacity/Breathing Efficiency\n\nAfter developing a professional grade capacity to ingest food, we focus on the physical factors in order to both increase the speed at which we can eat, but also to maintain the speed for the duration of the contest. \n\nBreathing efficiency the other side of the coin to maximizing performance. He says:\n\n “Deep nose breathing brings breath deep into your diaphragm- the muscle that separates your lungs from your stomach. You can actually feel your diaphragm expand when you nose breathe. This causes your abdomen to expand, causing a downward pressure on your stomach that forces air into your lungs and increases blood flow to and from your heart.”\n\nAthletes seeking to improve this feature of their physicality should spend time each day using the Wim Hof Method of controlled hyperventilation, which is shown to increase heart rate efficiency and breathing efficiency. \n\nBy combining the two physical characteristics of jaw strength and breathing efficiency, athletes can eat faster, and eat longer, allowing to better approach achieving their maximum food capacity.\n\n\nThe Last Frontier: Minimal Body Fat\n\nThe last characteristic of maximizing high caliber eating is one that is particularly counter intuitive, minimizing body fat. This can be achieved by just about any means of which one would lose fat, whether sauna, weight lifting, running, etc. but bottom line is, the more the better, and will be that final edge that helps you win your competition\n\n\n\nHow do we develop these skills over time?\n\nWe have already defined the skills that need to be improved, the key then is to develop a program, one that will be stuck to. Making time for breathing, and water consumption, and jaw strengthening is something that must become routine as any pro athlete would train regularly. \nOver time, with practice you too will be able to ascend the ranks of professional eating, and finally live your childhood dream of becoming a professional athlete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSources: \nhttps://www.mensjournal.com/features/laird-hamiltons-high-performance-breathing-20130222/\n\nGame Changer: The Art of Sports Science.
