| title | Art Event Failures - The Artist Perspective |
| body | Planting Seeds is the name of the artwork on the easel. I recently was involved with an art event. As an artist, when I am invited to come and it is free to me I have a tendency to be suspect as to the mindset of the organizers. As a business person who has both owned a brick and mortar art business and as an organizer of art events myself I know there are two distinct and different mindsets to these events and as an artist one needs to understand how and event will pan out in advance before entering or accepting an invitation to an event. In this case I should have trusted my gut feeling and thanked them effusively for the invitation but not calendar myself in as an occupier of a booth. I’m not sure why I didn’t but I will not return next year even though I have been asked to come again. At the onset of the invitation I was delighted to have been on their radar, for that told me that I was definitely visible even way over in their small town, but the day I showed for the event I realized their intent was not ultimately going to be the type of event I come to for selling my art. Little was expressed to me as to the goals of the event initially but the event was presented clearly as a fine art event and not a fine art mixed crafter event. Unfortunately, those lofty expressions weren’t exactly the truth. There were lots of crafts and clothing and jewelry. It was also presented as a community event and not an edgy shock art event either. I have been a part of those types of events myself and since I’m not a prude I can see a place for that type of art, I was not shocked at seeing the art but I was shocked at a couple of the entrants not being vetted for a community event that included small children. There is a line where age is a factor in the grand scheme of an event and one artist should not be subjected to the fall out of outraged parents and confused and abused teens carry the response into the next booth and that artists offerings are barely noticed because of the situation. I was invited more than four months before the event so I watched closely for advertising, formal paperwork which should be normal in these cases as well as some sort of outline/timeline for setup, tear down, placement and all the things an artist expects to see when they show up for an event. The event map/booth assignment and event layout came almost at the last minute. Not enough time to get over to the event grounds to check out the layout. When we showed up for set up we found that a whole row of tents were placed outside the core of the event and access to the main core was sketchy at best. Naturally we found ourselves in that group. If it weren’t for my faithful buyers coming, we would have been devoid of foot traffic. The first night there were 10 people who walked through. When we queried about the advertising, we found they had only used social media, depending on the artists to bring their own buyers. How did I deduce this? One, they admitted the following day that the whole event was put upon one person’s shoulders and he did not use the newspapers, the local businesses for flyers, or even any form of standard advertising, any traffic that came through only came through because of the Farmers Market. Two, another one of the board members for the Famers Market said to me, we want to enhance the traffic for the Farmers Market, we are not interested in having a huge art event take away from the Market. The purpose of the event was and will always be to enhance the Farmers Market. It was also said to me that historically they have been unable to get people to come out for the 5:00pm to 8:00pm hours the first day of the event so the glorious talk up I received in the beginning was merely bait. Did I have a successful event? Yes and no. I always have sales, but all of my traffic was produced by my own means, it was twenty four hours for my regulars to make their decision to buy and I was back home to follow up on the sales. I could have done the same sitting in a nice comfortable chair at home and not had to drive the 65 miles each way for two days. My patrons could have come to my house for a viewing and had a much better time, and some wine as well. The event had no wine and beer garden, it was not intended to cater to the art buying crowd. Also, my customers buy right off the internet because they trust me to provide a quality piece of art for a good price and fair shipping. What are the two types of events? One is an annual thriving market for artists to successfully sell their art which is what artists needs most. The second is an event that only satisfies the needs of the organizers for their goals that are not intended to help or enhance the local artist market. These should be advertised to the artist in a manner that allows them to decide if they are worth the effort for the sake of being looked at by people who are not interested in buying art. This type of event is just eye candy for the organizers. It does satisfy certain types of artists. As to the shock art, really the point was what? Let’s offend as many people as possible who might be interested in art and turn them away from coming the following year just in case they are forced to endure it once again? There is a very small viewership that appreciates this type of art and it should be presented in a forum where the artist is lauded instead of labeled disgusting. The artist is trying to make a point, it is hers to make, although I’m not sure why used tampons made into ceramic sculptures or framed pubic hair, or a really bad drawing of a vulva has much to offer in the way of creativity unless the point is proactively narcissism for the sake of public self-flagellation, is her soulful need and she is confusing it with creativity. The artist in the next booth who had to deal with the fallout was extremely irritated. In general, it will not be and event that artists can depend on for new buyers, or dependable sales, it is simply an event designed in the minds of the organizers to provide an extra viewing distraction for the people buying fresh groceries for their table. Wonderful, but be honest with the artists and let them decide if the viewers are worth the effort of coming. It is a lot of work to enter an event and artists expect at the very least to gain interested contacts for future events and one on one sales. |

| title | Never Say To A Professional Artist... |
| body | "You know if you were to do this to the artwork then I might buy it." Really, if you don't like an artwork don't insult the artist with your preferences. Most professionals sell their work to people who become clients, followers, patrons, or the general public. If the artwork is not your cup of tea, then be polite. Don't offer up a critique at an event. Artists have their own view and voice. They take lessons from peers or people they consider better than themselves and learn from them. Art is also subjective. As an artist myself, who also owned a gallery for ten years, I found I could sell any type of art to anyone. Once I even had an artist come in who needed to become a tattoo artist. I found him a teacher, now he is making boo-coo bucks in Texas with a shop full of tattoo artists learning under his tutelage. I did not think his art would sell in the regular market without some type of backstory. Now his art sells as much as his tattoos because he has one heck of a backstory. In the artwork below, the arms of the subject are missing. My viewer wanted me to add arms and they completely rejected publicly my imagery. But I paint these figures to move the viewer to embrace the art. The art cannot embrace the viewer, they have no arms...that is my subject and point in The Androgynous Series. naturally this one sold. There is always something on my website for sale. https://pnwartistcatalog.wixsite.com/cgc-art-designs In the long run, it is perfectly fine if you don't like the art, but it is considered both passe and rude to announce your preferences if they are different than the artist. |

"body": "\n\n\"You know if you were to do this to the artwork then I might buy it.\" \n\nReally, if you don't like an artwork don't insult the artist with your preferences. Most professionals sell their work to people who become clients, followers, patrons, or the general public. If the artwork is not your cup of tea, then be polite. Don't offer up a critique at an event. Artists have their own view and voice. They take lessons from peers or people they consider better than themselves and learn from them. \n\nArt is also subjective. \n\nIn the artwork below, the arms of the subject are missing. My viewer wanted me to add arms and they completely rejected publicly my imagery. But I paint these figures to move the viewer to embrace the art. The art cannot embrace the viewer, they have no arms...that is my subject and point in The Androgynous Series. naturally this one sold. | title | Dinner With Cecile and William, a cookbook |
| body | When I was a little girl my father would work diligently all year long as well as to save to take the family on a yearly trip. We traveled everywhere. At each destination we would be trundled into a restaurant to eat. After each excursion the flavors from each place would stick in my mind and tongue throughout the year. At eight years old I began to experiment when I made my own lunch at home. It was not enough to go to these places, I wanted to repeat the flavors at home. My way of wanting to enjoy each vacation all year long. Of course my parents had no idea this was happening. It was not until I was old enough in my mother’s mind to assign me the chore of cooking dinner when they were both working, that a future chef would blossom. Through cooking chores I began to experiment. When the food was eaten and the looks on my families face were not discouraging it cemented the desire to cook as well as write recipes. Life happened, I did grow up to be a chef for some time and thousands of handwritten recipes fill boxes tucked throughout my home. It was not until a rather prodigious happenstance that they began to fill cookbooks. I also love to write, I was in the midst of writing Light Within Cobblestones, my first attempt at a manuscript that I met William, the co-author of Dinner With Cecile and William. A chance conversation that lasted hours lead him to mentor me through the process of writing. At the end of that process, I offered to cook a special nine course meal for him and several others. Ha, ha! The look on everyone’s faces as they ate. William said, “You should write a cookbook with me.” I had no idea writing a cookbook is actually just as hard as writing a manuscript. Just taking them from handwritten notes to digital files takes copious amounts of time. The recipes throughout “Dinner With Cecile and William” are flavors that passed through my lips in my journey through life. When I sat down wherever I have traveled and consumed a meal, I always say to myself, how can I interpret that and make a new recipe? Not only are they that, but the recipes evolved through some of my more interesting personality traits. I am known to be humorous and events that stick in my mind sometimes become recipes. My way of revisiting the event, and sometimes so I can make note or light of the situation. As you are inspired by a specific recipe, if you imagine where I might have been you can fill in the blanks yourself and travel with me. If only everyone could learn that great food can fix a lot of things in life. As I sorted, cooked and sampled each recipe with William, then typed out the recipes we eventually chose for “Dinner With Cecile and William”, we talked about the places by which they were inspired. It was like revisiting each place. “Dinner With Cecile and William, a cookbook” is a cooks way of travelling the globe by walking from the refrigerator to the stove, for flavors from all over the world. Get out the cookbook, get a little flour or butter on your hands, elbows and nose, reach for a glass of wine and experience fun, unique and humorous flavors. Don’t forget to invite your friends, for an unusual meal sparks great conversation. Let your tongue travel the world and your stomach thank you. My absolute favorite recipe is in “Dinner With Cecile and William, a cookbook”. Called Bluette Persil, it is a blend of fruit, vegetable greens and homemade broth. It is minutely chunky and takes two days for the ingredients to blend together. Follow the recipe exactly, or it will taste terrible. I am not a nutritionist but many of my recipes are specifically put together to actually enhance the digestion value. This I learned by life lessons. I do like unique flavors and some of the recipes are designed around that uniqueness. The first time you eat something you should always take a very small taste and let it lay on your tongue. Let it simmer there so your body and mind adapt to the flavor. If you gobble it down you miss the overall effect of something different. Diversity in taste can bring a wider ability to enjoy new foods. Plus, the body prefers these differences verses eating the same old thing. Our body’s metabolism fires much better if it is not bored. That could be said about life. You can find Dinner With Cecile and William online. |

| title | What is a multi-genre artist? |
| body | ~Classically in art the term is a "multidisciplinary artist" which means: Combining or involving several academic disciplines or professional specializations in an approach to painting in different bodies of artwork. But nowadays the type of artist is fairly rare and most people do not know what to think of an artist who does more than one style of art. Recently a facebook friend mentioned that it was said that I do too many styles. I don't need to prove anything but educating the masses on my niche does help them to understand why I don't just paint like others who focus on what is suggested by the less traveled and non-collector, normally a very polarized presentation of an artists "voice". So, I thought it would be interesting to share some names of other well known artists who have been known to span more than one genre of art. They are but a few I have had the opportunity to learn from or to do studies. Jan Fabre who is internationally known is a "multidisciplinary artist", he is someone I have emulated. Michelangelo, Da Vinci art the two most famous. I have a Yayoi Kusama artwork,, she is definitely a interdisciplinary. Artist Vik Muniz, his art puts a tingle up my back. Banksy is also an artist I follow, you can see a little bit of the same humor presented in his works as in mine. But he is someone who I was taught to emulate when I was still in schooling. H Craig Whitcomb is one of my contemporaries, he too is prolific across the genres. He has traveled extensively, HIS opinion matters to me. Professionals in the field outside this small market in the Spokane area understand my niche. ~By definition, multiple disciplines. Often interchanged with multimedia artist (varies as to if this is a proper interchange), this area of expertise has begun to blend several disciplines together to form an altogether new field. |
