titleComplete Steemit Tutorial 2018
body![download.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQj1fhKaZpB98ZAHpeYBJgmJKBnYQ2KbxFsXJJ5mvyVuV/download.jpeg) # Complete Steemit Tutorial 2018 – How to Join Steemit & Earn Money From It! Facebook is a company with a market capitalization worth nearly $550 billion as of today (28 Jan 2018). Twitter stands at $18 billion market cap. These two are the most famous social media and microblogging companies on the face of the internet. These big companies thrive on user base; zero users meaning no worth. Despite receiving all their revenue due to their users, they do not pay anything to them. Steemit does! Why and how? This Steemit tutorial will let you know everything you need to know how to join Steemit and how to earn money from it. Seriously, how much do these platforms pay to their user community? Don’t they ask for money instead to boost our posts? Google and its AdSense program prey on hardworking webmasters to push its digital advertising business. Google was well set to make $73.8 billion in net digital ad sales in 2017. YouTube is no different because it is owned by Googles and runs on AdSense too. All of these websites either do not pay a penny to their users or share just a petty percentage of the revenue that they earn. These centralized internet monopolies have controlled the social media space for too long now. It’s time for the power to go back to the people. Steemit brings the power back to the people. It not only rewards its users generously but also has zero advertisements placed on its website. Isn’t that incredible? ## What is Steemit? Steemit is a social media and blogging platform but is different from these so-called social media platforms. The closest thing to Steemit is Reddit. You can call Reddit the ugly and far less valuable version of Steemit which doesn’t pay anything to its dedicated community. Reddit the is number 7 website in the world and is worth $7 billion. But still, Steemit is better and has massive potential. ## An Absolute Beginner’s Steemit FAQ Here are three of the most fundamental questions about Steemit and their answers from the above-linked article. Q: What is Steemit? A: Steemit is a social media/blogging platform but it is based on Steem blockchain. Q: What is Steem Blockchain? A: The blockchain is the technology behind cryptocurrency which stores cryptocurrency coins. For example, Bitcoins are stored on its own blockchain. Q: What is Steem? A: Steem is the cryptocurrency of the Steemit platform. It would be more appropriate to say that Steemit is powered by its cryptocurrency called Steem. On Steemit, if you are considered an author worth upvoting, you will get rewards. If you appreciate others’ content with your upvote, you will get rewards. If you use different services built on top of main Steem blockchain, you will get rewarded. And if you post crappy and copy-paste content, you will be punished as well. Keep that in mind. How Does Steemit Reward Its Users? Steemit Inc. is a company which primarily isn’t a social media or blogging platform. It is an application powered by Steem blockchain, which is like the blockchain technology behind Bitcoin, which has cryptocurrency of its own called Steem. Steemit rewards Proof of Brain. There are two ways of earning on Steemit using your brain, which are briefly mentioned below. Author Rewards: When you publish a post or a comment and other users upvote it, you earn author rewards. Curation Rewards: When another user publishes a post or comment, and you determine it to be valuable enough to upvote it, you get rewarded a share of the value of your upvote as curation reward. Creating content and upvoting content based on its quality both are activities done using the brain, hence Proof of Brain. So, Steemit rewards the use of brain (and I personally love the concept!). Steemit users are rewarded tokens from Reward Pool which is a result annual inflation. Starting from December 2016, every year a percentage of new Steem tokens are created (a process called inflation) and allotted to the reward pool. Current inflation rate is 9.5 % and an annual decrease of approx 0.5 % is planned annually until the inflation rate drops to just 0.95 % in about 20 years time. Current supply of Steem tokens is 264,519,880 so annualy, a percentage of current supply at that time is inflated. To learn deeply about Steemit reward system, how it works, and why Steemit rewards its users, you should study the following articles. If it helps motivate you, do look at the rewards too. The posts are written by me and have been rewarded generously. ## How to Join Steemit? Since it is a platform based on the blockchain, it doesn’t let everyone sign up immediately because an account on Steem blockchain needs a protocol to be followed. Here’s how to join. Go to sign up page and enter your details (and please sign up with your genuine email). You will receive a notice that account is under approval. Once the account is approved, you will get an email. Open that email and complete your sign up. Keep your password/key/WIF (same things) safe and write it down somewhere (both digitally and on paper) because once lost, your account and the amount stored in it will not be recoverable. Now that you have signed up and got your account approved, it is time to follow the one who brought Steemit to your life. I would love to welcome and support you there. As of now, this is how my profile looks. My followers are increasing rapidly due to my content being deemed useful and of high quality by the community. ## Update profile picture Copy the URL of image Paste it into the Profile Picture URL box in your settings page on Steemit. ## Different Steemit settings Language: Choose your language. Almost all major languages are supported. More are being added. Display Name: Write your name or the name you wish to use on Steemit. About: Write some lines about yourself or the purpose of your account. Location: Write the name of your city and/or country. Website: If you have a website like I have this one, write it down. You can also link to your social media. Steemit Settings This is where profile picture, cover URLs are to pasted after following upload procedure. That’s it. You are done with settings. Don’t forget to hit the Update button. ## How to Start Using Steemit? Now that your account is set up and your profile is complete, here are a few things you would want to know before starting your Steemit journey. Steemit rewards value creation. To ascertain the value, it has a system which determines how valuable your content is and how valuable you are.Reputation Score: At the beginning, your reputation score is 25. As you contribute more towards the community, your reputation grows. People with less reputation earn fewer rewards and have less influence. Do increase your reputation to earn more. Reputation only increases when you receive a monetary reward for your post and comments. Followers: New posts stay in the New section of the website for literally a few seconds before they are taken over by the newest posts. The only way to make your posts visible to people is that they see it in their home feed. It is only possible if you have followers. So followers help your content be visible and thus create more interactions and earn more rewards. Posts, Comments & Upvotes: These three activities are at the core of your contribution to the community. The more value you contribute, the more rewards you get. Reward Types: Steemit rewards its contributors in three ways. These are Steem, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars. ## Steemit FAQs Here’s the difference between three reward types. If you read my article on understanding Steemit currencies, you do not need to read this part. STEEM – STEEM is the base liquid currency token in the platform. STEEM can be powered up to STEEM Power, traded for Steem Dollars, and transferred to other accounts. It is a cryptocurrency token, similar to bitcoin. STEEM Power – STEEM Power (abbreviated SP) is a measurement of how much influence a user has in the Steem network. The more STEEM Power a user holds, the more they can influence the value of posts and comments. STEEM Power is less liquid. If a user wishes to “Power Down” SP, they will receive equal distributions of the STEEM weekly, over a 13 week period. Steem Dollars – Steem Dollars (commonly abbreviated SBD) are liquid stable-value currency tokens designed to be pegged to $1 USD. They can be traded with STEEM and transferred to other accounts for commerce or exchange. Steem Dollars may also be converted into STEEM in a process that takes 3.5 days. Steem Dollars can be used to buy things in marketplaces, such as PeerHub.com. ## Start Using Steemit Now By now, you are sufficiently ready to start using this benevolent platform. Remember one word. Contribute!

titleBest Cryptocurrency Exchanges (2018)
body# <b>Best Cryptocurrency Exchanges (2018)</b> Ahoy Steemians! With each passing day, we can see the drastic spike and fall of cryptocurrencies. While many are skeptical about cryptocurrency there are also many who are in the crypto market for the long haul. 2017 was a huge year for cryptocurrencies. The explosion of growth in the market also meant an explosion of questions. Many people ask things like “where can I buy cryptocurrency?” or “which cryptocurrency is best to purchase?” To answer these questions we will look at the best cryptocurrency exchanges of 2018. ## <b>What is a Cryptocurrency Exchange?</b> If you know anything about stock exchanges, you’ll have no trouble grasping cryptocurrency exchanges. They simply provide a marketplace for buying/selling/trading cryptocurrencies. The goal of any exchange is to provide a fair and orderly opportunity for anyone to invest in the market. Exchanges make money by charging small fees on the transactions that take place on their platforms. There are tons of cryptocurrency exchanges out there, and there’s a chance we see others emerge as the crypto craze continues to grow. ## <b>What Makes a Good Exchange?</b> There are many factors that go into a good exchange, the obvious being reputation and security. As with any software platform, a good UI can make all the difference. Other factors to consider are the available order types, altcoins, maker/taker transaction fees, and payment options. Each of us has different priorities and will value each of these things differently. Let's take a look at some of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges of 2018. ## <b>COINBASE</b> https://www.coinbase.com/?locale=en Fiat support: Yes Altcoin support: None Order types: Market, limit, stop limit Transaction fees: No maker fees, moderate taker fees One of the most reputable and well-known platforms, Coinbase supports 32 countries spanning from North America, through much of Europe, the UK, and Australia. Asian investors will have to look elsewhere, as only Singapore is supported. Coinbase is very beginner friendly and often the choice for traditional investors looking to just get their hands on some Bitcoin. Available coins are currently limited to a few of the largest players: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and Litecoin. Payments can be made after authorizing a bank account, or by credit card (with a higher transaction fee). This is a bit different from traditional exchanges, where you must deposit fiat money in your exchange account before placing a buy order. GDAX, an extension of Coinbase, functions as a traditional exchange offering a real-time marketplace for trading the same four coins as mentioned above. However, being more of the traditional exchange that it is, traders may swap their Bitcoin for other coins. For example, you have the option to trade your Bitcoin for Ethereum and vice versa. There is currently no fees for moving funds from Coinbase to GDAX as they are partner platforms. Both Coinbase and GDAX use a simple and clean user interface that should be intuitive to figure out. Great for: Beginners who need a simple platform for buying and selling. Not great for: Day traders who are looking for serious technical analysis tools and a large selection of coin pairs to trade between. ![download.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaBP9eC4JzG369f7UNcDik15tknaCb6sDo57TbP3upigY/download.png) ## <b>KRAKEN</b> https://www.kraken.com Fiat support: Yes Altcoin support: Moderate Order types: Market, limit AND margin trading Transaction fees: Moderate Kraken is a San Francisco-based exchange that sees the highest volume among European traders. It boasts some perhaps one of the most complete set of perks with fiat support, a few altcoins, and margin trading. Fiat currencies EUR, USD, JPY and CAD can be utilized after a bank wire deposit. The only issue is the Kraken UI. It’s largely unintuitive and often difficult to navigate. Great for: Traders looking for complete-set of features. Not great for: Traders looking for simple user interface or large altcoin selection. ![download (1).png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRPSAsqh3yhqi1ZkMCgbXvpMY3siFVpyYsYpTRU4R3LiQ/download%20(1).png) ## <b>POLONIEX</b> Fiat support: No Altcoin support: Good Order types: Limit, stop limit AND margin trading Transaction fees: Moderate Yet another of the most popular exchanges worldwide, Poloniex is a solid and reputable choice for traders looking for a decent selection of altcoins. A major advantage of Poloniex is the ability to trade on margin, giving seasoned traders the option to short coins. Although there are only a handful of coins available for margin trading, this is a very welcome feature that seems to be pretty rare to find in the current state of crypto exchanges. Like many of the others, the Poloniex UI does not offer much in the realm of advanced technical analysis tools, but overall is a great interface that provides tons of useful information without seeming too cluttered. Great for: Traders who are looking to margin trade. Not great for: Traders who are looking for access to the largest number of altcoins. ![images.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeiJdvotAhoJ8NJaQ8yuRL2W9Sb5WrgrJynsKmqjPLLqa/images.jpeg) ## <b>BITTREX</b> Fiat support: No Altcoin support: Good Order types: Limit, stop limit AND margin trading Transaction fees: Moderate Yet another of the most popular exchanges worldwide, Poloniex is a solid and reputable choice for traders looking for a decent selection of altcoins. A major advantage of Poloniex is the ability to trade on margin, giving seasoned traders the option to short coins. Although there are only a handful of coins available for margin trading, this is a very welcome feature that seems to be pretty rare to find in the current state of crypto exchanges. Great for: Traders who are looking to margin trade. Not great for: Traders who are looking for access to the largest number of altcoins. https://bittrex.com Fiat support: No Altcoin support: Great Order types: Market, limit, stop limit Transaction fees: High Bittrex is another US based exchange, with usage all across the world. This exchange puts a lot of focus on supporting as many altcoins as possible, including very new and emerging ones. Currently, they support over 190 coins. A common complaint with Bittrex is high transaction fees (currently at 0.25% on all trades). The UI is pretty good and gives a fairly high number of technical analysis tools for those who are interested. Great for: Traders who are looking for access to as many altcoins as possible. Not great for: Traders looking to minimize fees. ![download (2).png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRcMGto4g13muPty1eg2fEYdhJLyNxqZsH7UDqMz8TdWc/download%20(2).png)

"body": "# <b>Best Cryptocurrency Exchanges (2018)</b>\n\n\nAhoy Steemians! \n\nWith each passing day, we can see the drastic spike and fall of cryptocurrencies. While many are skeptical about cryptocurrency there are also many who are in the crypto market for the long haul. \n\n2017 was a huge year for cryptocurrencies. The explosion of growth in the market also meant an explosion of questions. Many people ask things like “where can I buy cryptocurrency?” or “which cryptocurrency is best to purchase?” \n\nTo answer these questions we will look at the best cryptocurrency exchanges of 2018.\n\n## <b>What is a Cryptocurrency Exchange?</b>\n\nIf you know anything about stock exchanges, you’ll have no trouble grasping cryptocurrency exchanges. They simply provide a marketplace for buying/selling/trading cryptocurrencies. The goal of any exchange is to provide a fair and orderly opportunity for anyone to invest in the market. Exchanges make money by charging small fees on the transactions that take place on their platforms. There are tons of cryptocurrency exchanges out there, and there’s a chance we see others emerge as the crypto craze continues to grow.\n\n## <b>What Makes a Good Exchange?</b>\n\nThere are many factors that go into a good exchange, the obvious being reputation and security. As with any software platform, a good UI can make all the difference. Other factors to consider are the available order types, altcoins, maker/taker transaction fees, and payment options.\n\nEach of us has different priorities and will value each of these things differently.\n\nLet's take a look at some of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges of 2018.\n\n## <b>COINBASE</b>\nhttps://www.coinbase.com/?locale=en\nFiat support: Yes\nAltcoin support: None\nOrder types: Market, limit, stop limit\nTransaction fees: No maker fees, moderate taker fees\n\nOne of the most reputable and well-known platforms, Coinbase supports 32 countries spanning from North America, through much of Europe, the UK, and Australia. This is a bit different from traditional exchanges, where you must deposit fiat money in your exchange account before placing a buy order.\n\nGDAX, an extension of Coinbase, functions as a traditional exchange offering a real-time marketplace for trading the same four coins as mentioned above. However, being more of the traditional exchange that it is, traders may swap their Bitcoin for other coins. For example, you have the option to trade your Bitcoin for Ethereum and vice versa. There is currently no fees for moving funds from Coinbase to GDAX as they are partner platforms.\n\nBoth Coinbase and GDAX use a simple and clean user interface that should be intuitive to figure out.\n\nGreat for: Beginners who need a simple platform for buying and selling.\nNot great for: Day traders who are looking for serious technical analysis tools and a large selection of coin pairs to trade between.\n![download.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaBP9eC4JzG369f7UNcDik15tknaCb6sDo57TbP3upigY/download.png)\n\n## <b>KRAKEN</b>\n\nhttps://www.kraken.com\nFiat support: Yes\nAltcoin support: Moderate\nOrder types: Market, limit AND margin trading\nTransaction fees: Moderate\n\nKraken is a San Francisco-based exchange that sees the highest volume among European traders. It boasts some perhaps one of the most complete set of perks with fiat support, a few altcoins, and margin trading. Fiat currencies EUR, USD, JPY and CAD can be utilized after a bank wire deposit. The only issue is the Kraken UI. It’s largely unintuitive and often difficult to navigate.\n\nGreat for: Traders looking for complete-set of features.\nNot great for: Traders looking for simple user interface or large altcoin selection.\n![download (1).png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRPSAsqh3yhqi1ZkMCgbXvpMY3siFVpyYsYpTRU4R3LiQ/download%20(1).png)\n\n## <b>POLONIEX</b>\n\nFiat support: No\nAltcoin support: Good\nOrder types: Limit, stop limit AND margin trading\nTransaction fees: Moderate\n\nYet another of the most popular exchanges worldwide, Poloniex is a solid and reputable choice for traders looking for a decent selection of altcoins. A major advantage of Poloniex is the ability to trade on margin, giving seasoned traders the option to short coins. Although there are only a handful of coins available for margin trading, this is a very welcome feature that seems to be pretty rare to find in the current state of crypto exchanges. Like many of the others, the Poloniex UI does not offer much in the realm of advanced technical analysis tools, but overall is a great interface that provides tons of useful information without seeming too cluttered.\n\nGreat for: Traders who are looking to margin trade.\nNot great for: Traders who are looking for access to the largest number of altcoins. \n![images.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeiJdvotAhoJ8NJaQ8yuRL2W9Sb5WrgrJynsKmqjPLLqa/images.jpeg)\n\n## <b>BITTREX</b>\nFiat support: No\nAltcoin support: Good\nOrder types: Limit, stop limit AND margin trading\nTransaction fees: Moderate\n\nYet another of the most popular exchanges worldwide, Poloniex is a solid and reputable choice for traders looking for a decent selection of altcoins. This exchange puts a lot of focus on supporting as many altcoins as possible, including very new and emerging ones. Currently, they support over 190 coins. A common complaint with Bittrex is high transaction fees (currently at 0.25% on all trades). The UI is pretty good and gives a fairly high number of technical analysis tools for those who are interested.\n\nGreat for: Traders who are looking for access to as many altcoins as possible.\nNot great for: Traders looking to minimize fees.\n![download (2).png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRcMGto4g13muPty1eg2fEYdhJLyNxqZsH7UDqMz8TdWc/download%20(2).png)",

titleAnnouncing Your Plans Makes You Less Motivated To Accomplish Them
body![pin-2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmb8FnWxEhoT65xYKj6QxnwJHbjipuTCsYQHJmh15Aqw3N/pin-2.jpg) Did you know that announcing your plans make you less motivated to accomplish them? Shouldn’t you announce your goals, so friends can support you? Isn’t it good networking to tell people about your upcoming projects? Doesn’t the “law of attraction” mean you should state your intention, and visualize the goal as already yours? Nope. Tests done since 1933 show that people who talk about their intentions are less likely to make them happen. Announcing your plans to others satisfies your self-identity just enough that you’re less motivated to do the hard work needed. In 1933, W. Mahler found that if a person announced the solution to a problem, and was acknowledged by others, it was now in the brain as a “social reality”, even if the solution hadn’t actually been achieved. NYU psychology professor Peter Gollwitzer has been studying this since his 1982 book “Symbolic Self-Completion” (pdf article here) — and recently published results of new tests in a research article, “When Intentions Go Public: Does Social Reality Widen the Intention-Behavior Gap?” Four different tests of 63 people found that those who kept their intentions private were more likely to achieve them than those who made them public and were acknowledged by others. Once you’ve told people of your intentions, it gives you a “premature sense of completeness.” You have “identity symbols” in your brain that make your self-image. Since both actions and talk create symbols in your brain, talking satisfies the brain enough that it “neglects the pursuit of further symbols.” A related test found that success on one sub-goal (like eating healthy meals) reduced efforts on other important sub-goals (like going to the gym) for the same reason. It may seem unnatural to keep your intentions and plans private, but try it. If you do tell a friend, make sure not to say it as a satisfaction (“I’m going to run a marathon!”), but as dissatisfaction (“I want to lose 20 pounds, so kick my ass if I don’t, OK?”)

titleWhat Really is Cryptocurrency?
body![22995486509_36ebd9180e_b.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmebGuwC8mHnUDCvCAsUYNnRKAJtxNUTG1qs6HtRF2mJUE/22995486509_36ebd9180e_b.jpg) What is cryptocurrency: 21st-century unicorn – or the money of the future? This introduction explains the most important thing about cryptocurrencies. After you‘ve read it, you‘ll know more about it than most other humans. Today cryptocurrencies have become a global phenomenon known to most people. While still somehow geeky and not understood by most people, banks, governments and many companies are aware of its importance. In 2016, you‘ll have a hard time finding a major bank, a big accounting firm, a prominent software company or a government that did not research cryptocurrencies, publish a paper about it or start a so-called blockchain-project. thomas-carper-us-senator-bitcoin “Virtual currencies, perhaps most notably Bitcoin, have captured the imagination of some, struck fear among others, and confused the heck out of the rest of us.” – Thomas Carper, US-Senator But beyond the noise and the press releases the overwhelming majority of people – even bankers, consultants, scientists, and developers – have a very limited knowledge about cryptocurrencies. They often fail to even understand the basic concepts. So let‘s walk through the whole story. What are cryptocurrencies? Where did cryptocurrency originate? Why should you learn about cryptocurrency? And what do you need to know about cryptocurrency? What is cryptocurrency and how cryptocurrencies emerged as a side product of digital cash Few people know, but cryptocurrencies emerged as a side product of another invention. Satoshi Nakamoto, the unknown inventor of Bitcoin, the first and still most important cryptocurrency, never intended to invent a currency. In his announcement of Bitcoin in late 2008, Satoshi said he developed “A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.“ His goal was to invent something; many people failed to create before digital cash. Announcing the first release of Bitcoin, a new electronic cash system that uses a peer-to-peer network to prevent double-spending. It’s completely decentralized with no server or central authority. – Satoshi Nakamoto, 09 January 2009, announcing Bitcoin on SourceForge. The single most important part of Satoshi‘s invention was that he found a way to build a decentralized digital cash system. In the nineties, there have been many attempts to create digital money, but they all failed. … after more than a decade of failed Trusted Third Party based systems (Digicash, etc), they see it as a lost cause. I hope they can make the distinction, that this is the first time I know of that we’re trying a non-trust based system. – Satoshi Nakamoto in an E-Mail to Dustin Trammell After seeing all the centralized attempts fail, Satoshi tried to build a digital cash system without a central entity. Like a Peer-to-Peer network for file sharing. This decision became the birth of cryptocurrency. They are the missing piece Satoshi found to realize digital cash. The reason why is a bit technical and complex, but if you get it, you‘ll know more about cryptocurrencies than most people do. So, let‘s try to make it as easy as possible: To realize digital cash you need a payment network with accounts, balances, and transaction. That‘s easy to understand. One major problem every payment network has to solve is to prevent the so-called double spending: to prevent that one entity spends the same amount twice. Usually, this is done by a central server who keeps record about the balances. In a decentralized network, you don‘t have this server. So you need every single entity of the network to do this job. Every peer in the network needs to have a list with all transactions to check if future transactions are valid or an attempt to double spend. But how can these entities keep a consensus about this records? If the peers of the network disagree about only one single, minor balance, everything is broken. They need an absolute consensus. Usually, you take, again, a central authority to declare the correct state of balances. But how can you achieve consensus without a central authority? Nobody did know until Satoshi emerged out of nowhere. In fact, nobody believed it was even possible. Satoshi proved it was. His major innovation was to achieve consensus without a central authority. Cryptocurrencies are a part of this solution – the part that made the solution thrilling, fascinating and helped it to roll over the world. What are cryptocurrencies really? If you take away all the noise around cryptocurrencies and reduce it to a simple definition, you find it to be just limited entries in a database no one can change without fulfilling specific conditions. This may seem ordinary, but, believe it or not: this is exactly how you can define a currency. Take the money on your bank account: What is it more than entries in a database that can only be changed under specific conditions? You can even take physical coins and notes: What are they else than limited entries in a public physical database that can only be changed if you match the condition than you physically own the coins and notes? Money is all about a verified entry in some kind of database of accounts, balances, and transactions. How miners create coins and confirm transactions Let‘s have a look at the mechanism ruling the databases of cryptocurrencies. A cryptocurrency like Bitcoin consists of a network of peers. Every peer has a record of the complete history of all transactions and thus of the balance of every account. A transaction is a file that says, “Bob gives X Bitcoin to Alice“ and is signed by Bob‘s private key. It‘s basic public key cryptography, nothing special at all. After signed, a transaction is broadcasted in the network, sent from one peer to every other peer. This is basic p2p-technology. Nothing special at all, again. What is Blockchain Technology? A step-by-step guide than anyone can understand The transaction is known almost immediately by the whole network. But only after a specific amount of time it gets confirmed. Confirmation is a critical concept in cryptocurrencies. You could say that cryptocurrencies are all about confirmation. As long as a transaction is unconfirmed, it is pending and can be forged. When a transaction is confirmed, it is set in stone. It is no longer forgeable, it can‘t be reversed, it is part of an immutable record of historical transactions: of the so-called blockchain. Only miners can confirm transactions. This is their job in a cryptocurrency-network. They take transactions, stamp them as legit and spread them in the network. After a transaction is confirmed by a miner, every node has to add it to its database. It has become part of the blockchain. For this job, the miners get rewarded with a token of the cryptocurrency, for example with Bitcoins. Since the miner‘s activity is the single most important part of cryptocurrency-system we should stay for a moment and take a deeper look on it. caleb-chen: What is Ethereum “In the next few years, we are going to see national governments take large steps towards instituting a cashless society where people transact using centralized digital currencies. Simultaneously, the decentralized cryptocurrencies – that some even view as harder money – will see increased use from all sectors.” – Caleb Chen London Trust Media What are miners doing? Principally everybody can be a miner. Since a decentralized network has no authority to delegate this task, a cryptocurrency needs some kind of mechanism to prevent one ruling party from abusing it. Imagine someone creates thousands of peers and spreads forged transactions. The system would break immediately. So, Satoshi set the rule that the miners need to invest some work of their computers to qualify for this task. In fact, they have to find a hash – a product of a cryptographic function – that connects the new block with its predecessor. This is called the Proof-of-Work. In Bitcoin, it is based on the SHA 256 Hash algorithm. What is Cryptocurrency You don‘t need to understand details about SHA 256. It‘s only important you know that it can be the basis of a cryptologic puzzle the miners compete to solve. After finding a solution, a miner can build a block and add it to the blockchain. As an incentive, he has the right to add a so-called coinbase transaction that gives him a specific number of Bitcoins. This is the only way to create valid Bitcoins. Bitcoins can only be created if miners solve a cryptographic puzzle. Since the difficulty of this puzzle increases the amount of computer power the whole miner’s invest, there is only a specific amount of cryptocurrency token that can be created in a given amount of time. This is part of the consensus no peer in the network can break. Revolutionary properties If you really think about it, Bitcoin, as a decentralized network of peers which keep a consensus about accounts and balances, is more a currency than the numbers you see in your bank account. What are these numbers more than entries in a database – a database which can be changed by people you don‘t see and by rules you don‘t know? Eric Vorhees: What is Cryptocurrency “It is that narrative of human development under which we now have other fights to fight, and I would say in the realm of Bitcoin it is mainly the separation of money and state.” – Erik Voorhees, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Basically, cryptocurrencies are entries about token in decentralized consensus-databases. They are called CRYPTOcurrencies because the consensus-keeping process is secured by strong cryptography. Cryptocurrencies are built on cryptography. They are not secured by people or by trust, but by math. It is more probable that an asteroid falls on your house than that a bitcoin address is compromised. Describing the properties of cryptocurrencies we need to separate between transactional and monetary properties. While most cryptocurrencies share a common set of properties, they are not carved in stone. Transactional properties: 1.) Irreversible: After confirmation, a transaction can‘t be reversed. By nobody. And nobody means nobody. Not you, not your bank, not the president of the United States, not Satoshi, not your miner. Nobody. If you send money, you send it. Period. No one can help you, if you sent your funds to a scammer or if a hacker stole them from your computer. There is no safety net. 2.) Pseudonymous: Neither transactions nor accounts are connected to real-world identities. You receive Bitcoins on so-called addresses, which are randomly seeming chains of around 30 characters. While it is usually possible to analyze the transaction flow, it is not necessarily possible to connect the real world identity of users with those addresses. 3.) Fast and global: Transaction are propagated nearly instantly in the network and are confirmed in a couple of minutes. Since they happen in a global network of computers they are completely indifferent of your physical location. It doesn‘t matter if I send Bitcoin to my neighbour or to someone on the other side of the world. 4.) Secure: Cryptocurrency funds are locked in a public key cryptography system. Only the owner of the private key can send cryptocurrency. Strong cryptography and the magic of big numbers makes it impossible to break this scheme. A Bitcoin address is more secure than Fort Knox. 5.) Permissionless: You don‘t have to ask anybody to use cryptocurrency. It‘s just a software that everybody can download for free. After you installed it, you can receive and send Bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies. No one can prevent you. There is no gatekeeper. What is Cryptocurrency Monetary properties: 1.) Controlled supply: Most cryptocurrencies limit the supply of the tokens. In Bitcoin, the supply decreases in time and will reach its final number somewhere in around 2140. All cryptocurrencies control the supply of the token by a schedule written in the code. This means the monetary supply of a cryptocurrency in every given moment in the future can roughly be calculated today. There is no surprise. 2.) No debt but bearer: The Fiat-money on your bank account is created by debt, and the numbers, you see on your ledger represent nothing but debts. It‘s a system of IOU. Cryptocurrencies don‘t represent debts. They just represent themselves. They are money as hard as coins of gold. To understand the revolutionary impact of cryptocurrencies you need to consider both properties. Bitcoin as a permissionless, irreversible and pseudonymous means of payment is an attack on the control of banks and governments over the monetary transactions of their citizens. You can‘t hinder someone to use Bitcoin, you can‘t prohibit someone to accept a payment, you can‘t undo a transaction. As money with a limited, controlled supply that is not changeable by a government, a bank or any other central institution, cryptocurrencies attack the scope of the monetary policy. They take away the control central banks take on inflation or deflation by manipulating the monetary supply. Sarah Granger. Cryptocurrency “While it’s still fairly new and unstable relative to the gold standard, cryptocurrency is definitely gaining traction and will most certainly have more normalized uses in the next few years. Right now, in particular, it’s increasing in popularity with the post-election market uncertainty. The key will be in making it easy for large-scale adoption (as with anything involving crypto) including developing safeguards and protections for buyers/investors. I expect that within two years, we’ll be in a place where people can shove their money under the virtual mattress through cryptocurrency, and they’ll know that wherever they go, that money will be there.” – Sarah Granger, Author, and Speaker. Cryptocurrencies: Dawn of a new economy Mostly due to its revolutionary properties cryptocurrencies have become a success their inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto, didn‘t dare to dream of it. While every other attempt to create a digital cash system didn‘t attract a critical mass of users, Bitcoin had something that provoked enthusiasm and fascination. Sometimes it feels more like religion than technology. What is cryptocurrency Cryptocurrencies are digital gold. Sound money that is secure from political influence. Money that promises to preserve and increase its value over time. Cryptocurrencies are also a fast and comfortable means of payment with a worldwide scope, and they are private and anonymous enough to serve as a means of payment for black markets and any other outlawed economic activity. But while cryptocurrencies are more used for payment, its use as a means of speculation and a store of value dwarfs the payment aspects. Cryptocurrencies gave birth to an incredibly dynamic, fast-growing market for investors and speculators. Exchanges like Okcoin, poloniex or shapeshift enables the trade of hundreds of cryptocurrencies. Their daily trade volume exceeds that of major European stock exchanges. At the same time, the praxis of Initial Coin Distribution (ICO), mostly facilitated by Ethereum‘s smart contracts, gave live to incredibly successful crowdfunding projects, in which often an idea is enough to collect millions of dollars. In the case of “The DAO” it has been more than 150 million dollars. In this rich ecosystem of coins and token, you experience extreme volatility. It‘s common that a coin gains 10 percent a day – sometimes 100 percent – just to lose the same at the next day. If you are lucky, your coin‘s value grows up to 1000 percent in one or two weeks. While Bitcoin remains by far the most famous cryptocurrency and most other cryptocurrencies have zero non-speculative impact, investors and users should keep an eye on several cryptocurrencies. Here we present the most popular cryptocurrencies of today. What is Cryptocurrency Source: coinmarketcap Bitcoin The one and only, the first and most famous cryptocurrency. Bitcoin serves as a digital gold standard in the whole cryptocurrency-industry, is used as a global means of payment and is the de-facto currency of cyber-crime like darknet markets or ransomware. After seven years in existence, Bitcoin‘s price has increased from zero to more than 650 Dollar, and its transaction volume reached more than 200.000 daily transactions. There is not much more to say: Bitcoin is here to stay. Ethereum The brainchild of young crypto-genius Vitalik Buterin has ascended to the second place in the hierarchy of cryptocurrencies. Other than Bitcoin its blockchain does not only validate a set of accounts and balances but of so-called states. This means that Ethereum can not only process transactions but complex contracts and programs. This flexibility makes Ethereum the perfect instrument for blockchain -application. But it comes at a cost. After the Hack of the DAO – an Ethereum based smart contract – the developers decided to do a hard fork without consensus, which resulted in the emerge of Ethereum Classic. Besides this, there are several clones of Ethereum, and Ethereum itself is a host of several Tokens like DigixDAO and Augur. This makes Ethereum more a family of cryptocurrencies than a single currency. Ripple Maybe the less popular – or most hated – project in the cryptocurrency community is Ripple. While Ripple has a native cryptocurrency – XRP – it is more about a network to process IOUs than the cryptocurrency itself. XRP, the currency, doesn‘t serve as a medium to store and exchange value, but more as a token to protect the network against spam. Ripple Labs created every XRP-token, the company running the Ripple network, and is distributed by them on will. For this reason, Ripple is often called pre-mined in the community and dissed as no real cryptocurrency, and XRP is not considered as a good store of value. Banks, however, seem to like Ripple. At least they adopt the system with an increasing pace. Litecoin Litecoin was one of the first cryptocurrencies after Bitcoin and tagged as the silver to the digital gold bitcoin. Faster than bitcoin, with a larger amount of token and a new mining algorithm, Litecoin was a real innovation, perfectly tailored to be the smaller brother of bitcoin. “It facilitated the emerge of several other cryptocurrencies which used its codebase but made it, even more, lighter“. Examples are Dogecoin or Feathercoin. While Litecoin failed to find a real use case and lost its second place after bitcoin, it is still actively developed and traded and is hoarded as a backup if Bitcoin fails. Monero Monero is the most prominent example of the cryptonite algorithm. This algorithm was invented to add the privacy features Bitcoin is missing. If you use Bitcoin, every transaction is documented in the blockchain and the trail of transactions can be followed. With the introduction of a concept called ring-signatures, the cryptonite algorithm was able to cut through that trail. The first implementation of cryptonite, Bytecoin, was heavily premined and thus rejected by the community. Monero was the first non-premined clone of bytecoin and raised a lot of awareness. There are several other incarnations of cryptonote with their own little improvements, but none of it did ever achieve the same popularity as Monero. Monero‘s popularity peaked in summer 2016 when some darknetmarkets decided to accept it as a currency. This resulted in a steady increase in the price, while the actual usage of Monero seems to remain disappointingly small. Besides those, there are hundreds of cryptocurrencies of several families. Most of them are nothing more than attempts to reach investors and quickly make money, but a lot of them promise playgrounds to test innovations in cryptocurrency-technology. What is cryptocurrency What is the future of Cryptocurrency? The market of cryptocurrencies is fast and wild. Nearly every day new cryptocurrencies emerge, old die, early adopters get wealthy and investors lose money. Every cryptocurrency comes with a promise, mostly a big story to turn the world around. Few survive the first months, and most are pumped and dumped by speculators and live on as zombie coins until the last bagholder loses hope ever to see a return on his investment. cody-littlewood-and-im-the-founder-and-ceo-of-codelitt “In 2 years from now, I believe cryptocurrencies will be gaining legitimacy as a protocol for business transactions, micropayments, and overtakingWestern Union as the preferred remittance tool. After you‘ve read it, you‘ll know more about it than most other humans.\n\nToday cryptocurrencies have become a global phenomenon known to most people. While still somehow geeky and not understood by most people, banks, governments and many companies are aware of its importance.\n\nIn 2016, you‘ll have a hard time finding a major bank, a big accounting firm, a prominent software company or a government that did not research cryptocurrencies, publish a paper about it or start a so-called blockchain-project.\n\n \n\nthomas-carper-us-senator-bitcoin\n\n \n\n“Virtual currencies, perhaps most notably Bitcoin, have captured the imagination of some, struck fear among others, and confused the heck out of the rest of us.” – Thomas Carper, US-Senator\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nBut beyond the noise and the press releases the overwhelming majority of people – even bankers, consultants, scientists, and developers – have a very limited knowledge about cryptocurrencies. They often fail to even understand the basic concepts.\n\nSo let‘s walk through the whole story. What are cryptocurrencies?\n\nWhere did cryptocurrency originate? \nWhy should you learn about cryptocurrency?\nAnd what do you need to know about cryptocurrency?\n \n\nWhat is cryptocurrency and how cryptocurrencies emerged as a side product of digital cash\n \n\nFew people know, but cryptocurrencies emerged as a side product of another invention. Satoshi Nakamoto, the unknown inventor of Bitcoin, the first and still most important cryptocurrency, never intended to invent a currency.\n\nIn his announcement of Bitcoin in late 2008, Satoshi said he developed “A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.“ \n\nHis goal was to invent something; many people failed to create before digital cash.\n\n \n\nAnnouncing the first release of Bitcoin, a new electronic cash system that uses a peer-to-peer network to prevent double-spending. It’s completely decentralized with no server or central authority. – Satoshi Nakamoto, 09 January 2009, announcing Bitcoin on SourceForge.\n \n\nThe single most important part of Satoshi‘s invention was that he found a way to build a decentralized digital cash system. In the nineties, there have been many attempts to create digital money, but they all failed.\n\n \n\n… after more than a decade of failed Trusted Third Party based systems (Digicash, etc), they see it as a lost cause. I hope they can make the distinction, that this is the first time I know of that we’re trying a non-trust based system. – Satoshi Nakamoto in an E-Mail to Dustin Trammell\n \n\n \n\nAfter seeing all the centralized attempts fail, Satoshi tried to build a digital cash system without a central entity. Like a Peer-to-Peer network for file sharing.\n\nThis decision became the birth of cryptocurrency. They are the missing piece Satoshi found to realize digital cash. The reason why is a bit technical and complex, but if you get it, you‘ll know more about cryptocurrencies than most people do. So, let‘s try to make it as easy as possible:\n\nTo realize digital cash you need a payment network with accounts, balances, and transaction. That‘s easy to understand. One major problem every payment network has to solve is to prevent the so-called double spending: to prevent that one entity spends the same amount twice. Usually, this is done by a central server who keeps record about the balances.\n\nIn a decentralized network, you don‘t have this server. So you need every single entity of the network to do this job. Every peer in the network needs to have a list with all transactions to check if future transactions are valid or an attempt to double spend.\n\nBut how can these entities keep a consensus about this records? \n\nIf the peers of the network disagree about only one single, minor balance, everything is broken. They need an absolute consensus. Usually, you take, again, a central authority to declare the correct state of balances. But how can you achieve consensus without a central authority?\n\nNobody did know until Satoshi emerged out of nowhere. In fact, nobody believed it was even possible.\n\nSatoshi proved it was. His major innovation was to achieve consensus without a central authority. Cryptocurrencies are a part of this solution – the part that made the solution thrilling, fascinating and helped it to roll over the world.\n\n \n\nWhat are cryptocurrencies really?\nIf you take away all the noise around cryptocurrencies and reduce it to a simple definition, you find it to be just limited entries in a database no one can change without fulfilling specific conditions. This may seem ordinary, but, believe it or not: this is exactly how you can define a currency.\n\nTake the money on your bank account: What is it more than entries in a database that can only be changed under specific conditions? You can even take physical coins and notes: What are they else than limited entries in a public physical database that can only be changed if you match the condition than you physically own the coins and notes? Money is all about a verified entry in some kind of database of accounts, balances, and transactions.\n\nHow miners create coins and confirm transactions\n\nLet‘s have a look at the mechanism ruling the databases of cryptocurrencies. A cryptocurrency like Bitcoin consists of a network of peers. Every peer has a record of the complete history of all transactions and thus of the balance of every account.\n\nA transaction is a file that says, “Bob gives X Bitcoin to Alice“ and is signed by Bob‘s private key. It‘s basic public key cryptography, nothing special at all. After signed, a transaction is broadcasted in the network, sent from one peer to every other peer. This is basic p2p-technology. Nothing special at all, again.\n\n \n\nWhat is Blockchain Technology? A step-by-step guide than anyone can understand\n\n \n\n \n\nThe transaction is known almost immediately by the whole network. But only after a specific amount of time it gets confirmed.\n\nConfirmation is a critical concept in cryptocurrencies. You could say that cryptocurrencies are all about confirmation.\n\nAs long as a transaction is unconfirmed, it is pending and can be forged. When a transaction is confirmed, it is set in stone. It is no longer forgeable, it can‘t be reversed, it is part of an immutable record of historical transactions: of the so-called blockchain.\n\nOnly miners can confirm transactions. This is their job in a cryptocurrency-network. They take transactions, stamp them as legit and spread them in the network. After a transaction is confirmed by a miner, every node has to add it to its database. It has become part of the blockchain.\n\nFor this job, the miners get rewarded with a token of the cryptocurrency, for example with Bitcoins. Since the miner‘s activity is the single most important part of cryptocurrency-system we should stay for a moment and take a deeper look on it.\n\n \n\ncaleb-chen: What is Ethereum\n\n“In the next few years, we are going to see national governments take large steps towards instituting a cashless society where people transact using centralized digital currencies. Simultaneously, the decentralized cryptocurrencies – that some even view as harder money – will see increased use from all sectors.” – Caleb Chen London Trust Media\nWhat are miners doing?\n \n\nPrincipally everybody can be a miner. Since a decentralized network has no authority to delegate this task, a cryptocurrency needs some kind of mechanism to prevent one ruling party from abusing it. Imagine someone creates thousands of peers and spreads forged transactions. The system would break immediately.\n\nSo, Satoshi set the rule that the miners need to invest some work of their computers to qualify for this task. In fact, they have to find a hash – a product of a cryptographic function – that connects the new block with its predecessor. This is called the Proof-of-Work. In Bitcoin, it is based on the SHA 256 Hash algorithm.\n\n \n\nWhat is Cryptocurrency\n\n \n\nYou don‘t need to understand details about SHA 256. It‘s only important you know that it can be the basis of a cryptologic puzzle the miners compete to solve. After finding a solution, a miner can build a block and add it to the blockchain. As an incentive, he has the right to add a so-called coinbase transaction that gives him a specific number of Bitcoins. This is the only way to create valid Bitcoins.\n\nBitcoins can only be created if miners solve a cryptographic puzzle. Since the difficulty of this puzzle increases the amount of computer power the whole miner’s invest, there is only a specific amount of cryptocurrency token that can be created in a given amount of time. This is part of the consensus no peer in the network can break.\n\n \n\nRevolutionary properties\nIf you really think about it, Bitcoin, as a decentralized network of peers which keep a consensus about accounts and balances, is more a currency than the numbers you see in your bank account. What are these numbers more than entries in a database – a database which can be changed by people you don‘t see and by rules you don‘t know?\n\n \n\nEric Vorhees: What is Cryptocurrency\n\n \n\n“It is that narrative of human development under which we now have other fights to fight, and I would say in the realm of Bitcoin it is mainly the separation of money and state.” \n\n– Erik Voorhees, cryptocurrency entrepreneur\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nBasically, cryptocurrencies are entries about token in decentralized consensus-databases. They are called CRYPTOcurrencies because the consensus-keeping process is secured by strong cryptography. Cryptocurrencies are built on cryptography. They are not secured by people or by trust, but by math. It is more probable that an asteroid falls on your house than that a bitcoin address is compromised.\n\nDescribing the properties of cryptocurrencies we need to separate between transactional and monetary properties. While most cryptocurrencies share a common set of properties, they are not carved in stone.\n\nTransactional properties:\n \n\n1.) Irreversible: After confirmation, a transaction can‘t be reversed. By nobody. And nobody means nobody. Not you, not your bank, not the president of the United States, not Satoshi, not your miner. Nobody. If you send money, you send it. Period. No one can help you, if you sent your funds to a scammer or if a hacker stole them from your computer. There is no safety net.\n\n2.) Pseudonymous: Neither transactions nor accounts are connected to real-world identities. You receive Bitcoins on so-called addresses, which are randomly seeming chains of around 30 characters. While it is usually possible to analyze the transaction flow, it is not necessarily possible to connect the real world identity of users with those addresses.\n\n3.) Fast and global: Transaction are propagated nearly instantly in the network and are confirmed in a couple of minutes. Since they happen in a global network of computers they are completely indifferent of your physical location. It doesn‘t matter if I send Bitcoin to my neighbour or to someone on the other side of the world.\n\n4.) Secure: Cryptocurrency funds are locked in a public key cryptography system. Only the owner of the private key can send cryptocurrency. Strong cryptography and the magic of big numbers makes it impossible to break this scheme. A Bitcoin address is more secure than Fort Knox.\n\n5.) Permissionless: You don‘t have to ask anybody to use cryptocurrency. It‘s just a software that everybody can download for free. After you installed it, you can receive and send Bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies. No one can prevent you. There is no gatekeeper.\n\n \n\n \n\nWhat is Cryptocurrency\n\n \n\nMonetary properties:\n \n\n1.) Controlled supply: Most cryptocurrencies limit the supply of the tokens. In Bitcoin, the supply decreases in time and will reach its final number somewhere in around 2140. All cryptocurrencies control the supply of the token by a schedule written in the code. This means the monetary supply of a cryptocurrency in every given moment in the future can roughly be calculated today. There is no surprise.\n\n2.) No debt but bearer: The Fiat-money on your bank account is created by debt, and the numbers, you see on your ledger represent nothing but debts. It‘s a system of IOU. Cryptocurrencies don‘t represent debts. They just represent themselves. They are money as hard as coins of gold.\n\nTo understand the revolutionary impact of cryptocurrencies you need to consider both properties. Bitcoin as a permissionless, irreversible and pseudonymous means of payment is an attack on the control of banks and governments over the monetary transactions of their citizens. You can‘t hinder someone to use Bitcoin, you can‘t prohibit someone to accept a payment, you can‘t undo a transaction.\n\nAs money with a limited, controlled supply that is not changeable by a government, a bank or any other central institution, cryptocurrencies attack the scope of the monetary policy. They take away the control central banks take on inflation or deflation by manipulating the monetary supply.\n\n \n\nSarah Granger. Cryptocurrency \n\n“While it’s still fairly new and unstable relative to the gold standard, cryptocurrency is definitely gaining traction and will most certainly have more normalized uses in the next few years. \n\n \n\n \n\nCryptocurrencies: Dawn of a new economy\n \n\nMostly due to its revolutionary properties cryptocurrencies have become a success their inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto, didn‘t dare to dream of it. While every other attempt to create a digital cash system didn‘t attract a critical mass of users, Bitcoin had something that provoked enthusiasm and fascination. Sometimes it feels more like religion than technology.\n\n \n\nWhat is cryptocurrency\n\n \n\nCryptocurrencies are digital gold. Sound money that is secure from political influence. Money that promises to preserve and increase its value over time. Cryptocurrencies are also a fast and comfortable means of payment with a worldwide scope, and they are private and anonymous enough to serve as a means of payment for black markets and any other outlawed economic activity.\n\n \n\nBut while cryptocurrencies are more used for payment, its use as a means of speculation and a store of value dwarfs the payment aspects. Cryptocurrencies gave birth to an incredibly dynamic, fast-growing market for investors and speculators. Exchanges like Okcoin, poloniex or shapeshift enables the trade of hundreds of cryptocurrencies. Their daily trade volume exceeds that of major European stock exchanges.\n\nAt the same time, the praxis of Initial Coin Distribution (ICO), mostly facilitated by Ethereum‘s smart contracts, gave live to incredibly successful crowdfunding projects, in which often an idea is enough to collect millions of dollars. In the case of “The DAO” it has been more than 150 million dollars.\n\nIn this rich ecosystem of coins and token, you experience extreme volatility. It‘s common that a coin gains 10 percent a day – sometimes 100 percent – just to lose the same at the next day. If you are lucky, your coin‘s value grows up to 1000 percent in one or two weeks.\n\nWhile Bitcoin remains by far the most famous cryptocurrency and most other cryptocurrencies have zero non-speculative impact, investors and users should keep an eye on several cryptocurrencies. Here we present the most popular cryptocurrencies of today.\n\n \n\nWhat is Cryptocurrency \n\n \n\nSource: coinmarketcap\n\nBitcoin\n\nThe one and only, the first and most famous cryptocurrency. Bitcoin serves as a digital gold standard in the whole cryptocurrency-industry, is used as a global means of payment and is the de-facto currency of cyber-crime like darknet markets or ransomware. After seven years in existence, Bitcoin‘s price has increased from zero to more than 650 Dollar, and its transaction volume reached more than 200.000 daily transactions.\n\nThere is not much more to say: Bitcoin is here to stay.\n\nEthereum\n\nThe brainchild of young crypto-genius Vitalik Buterin has ascended to the second place in the hierarchy of cryptocurrencies. Other than Bitcoin its blockchain does not only validate a set of accounts and balances but of so-called states. This means that Ethereum can not only process transactions but complex contracts and programs.\n\nThis flexibility makes Ethereum the perfect instrument for blockchain -application. This makes Ethereum more a family of cryptocurrencies than a single currency.\n\nRipple\n\nMaybe the less popular – or most hated – project in the cryptocurrency community is Ripple. While Ripple has a native cryptocurrency – XRP – it is more about a network to process IOUs than the cryptocurrency itself. XRP, the currency, doesn‘t serve as a medium to store and exchange value, but more as a token to protect the network against spam.\n\nRipple Labs created every XRP-token, the company running the Ripple network, and is distributed by them on will. For this reason, Ripple is often called pre-mined in the community and dissed as no real cryptocurrency, and XRP is not considered as a good store of value.\n\nBanks, however, seem to like Ripple. At least they adopt the system with an increasing pace.\n\nLitecoin\n\nLitecoin was one of the first cryptocurrencies after Bitcoin and tagged as the silver to the digital gold bitcoin.
